Keanu Reeves is the GOAT. The guy went through too much in his life and still find a way to be optimistic and kind. I recommend to watch Speed (1994) is a fun action film.

@@beaux2585 if you listen to his sister, Lily Allen’s, music and interviews he was a pretty shit person for a while but he cleaned up his act and now we get the nuanced and fun guy we see now.

William Dafoe's character is always on John's side. When he's asked to kill John, his first question is if the contract is open, meaning other people will be trying to kill John also. He agrees so he can be involved and keep an eye on John. If the contract had been exclusive (offered only to Dafoe) he would have turned it down. Actually really quick thinking on Dafoe's part.
When you lose someone dear to you, a pet is a great way to help ease the pain of loss. We give the animal all the love we wish we could give the departed... The speech he gives about what that puppy meant to him absolutely devastated me when i first heard it.
Keanu loved this role so much he kept the look for new Matrix...
He's taking the blue pill, so he's masculine-conforming. I'm sure as soon as he takes the red pill or steps outside the matrix, he'll be back to his old androgynous form.
Actually he looks OLDER WITHOUT the beard. Look at him in that last Bill and Ted movie and he is looking older than his real age.

The dog John Wick took, sadly is going to be put to sleep. There are papers outside that dog's cage that shows it. It's hard to notice, but once you learn this, it's understandable now why John chose that dog over the others. He saved it. :D

Keanu wanted to be an NHL goalie and was pretty good, it got him his first movie role as a goalie in the Rob Lowe/Patrick Swayze sportsflick Youngblood, he decided to become an actor and took his name out of draft eligibility. Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like if he played for the Canucks in '94.

Keanu seems like a very humble person, that is a virtue i value the most in a person. These movies are truly amazing and Keanu has done so much work to give his absolute best in them.
You also might like to try 'Taken', and maybe 'The Transporter'
My favorite part of all of these reactions is Duaffy therapeutically talking through her lingering emotional and ethical concerns with the stories at the end.
I've been looking forward to this.
I want to give an explanation to Duaffy, very specific. At 9:39 John is setting his knife in the sleeve. That knife is a Microtech ultratech, it has a security system that avoids the blade to come out and poke you, basically if the blade comes in contact with something during the opening, it suddenly stops. Very expensive piece of gear and very rare in Europe. That knife has one purpose only, that is assassination.

I'm glad you're covering this. It's one of my favorite "surprise hits" ever. This movie basically resurrected Keanu's career and what made the Internet fall in-love with him (again?)
Yeah this was such a surprise/sleeper hit, The lighting and camera angles, especially upon repeated viewings, really stands out as subtle but impactful aspects I really enjoy about this movie.
Duaffy, another great movie with Keanu is Constantine. The Matrix and John Wick trilogies are epic, of course.
Constantine was great fun, dark and deep, excellent performances.
I’ve always loved how everyone he encounters, always has to stop and think about their next move because it’s John Wick. The fear and intimidation John has in his movie universe is so badass to see.

It's strangely romantic. The thought that he's only going on to do these things for everything connected to his wife. You go, John Wick!

I think stealing John's car and killing his dog had less to do with the car, and more to do with Iosef feeling humiliated when John threw his own insult back at him in his own language.

Nobody seems to notice that the dog he saves is a pit bull. Female beagle puppies aren’t good at defending themselves, but it’s not a good idea to mess with a full-grown pit bull. This bit is like one of those “Do you resemble your dog?” things in magazines. To quote “Casablanca,” this looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Not sure I've heard this much laughing during a John Wick movie. Would not want to be on Duaffy's bad side. Other than that she is a delight to watch.

'Constantine' is another great movie of his. For this movie, he did extensive training with Taran Butler, one of the nation’s top 3-Gun competitors, and is in real life an excellent marksman.

It's a popular tattoo but not what you would expect on an assassin, it's traditionally a military tattoo, soldiers have been getting that proverb tattooed for hundreds of years. It's the motto of US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard units, battalions, ships, training centers, regiments, the Air Force Special Investigations, Coast Guard and Navy Academy graduates have used it for Class mottos, it's the same in a lot of other militaries. The Seattle SWAT unit uses it too.

The car was worth $60-70K (USD), it was a 1969 Mustang Mach 1 335 Big Block Hardtop but modified to be more like a '69 Big Boss 429 Hemi Fastback which is worth something more in the $200K (USD) range. The engine, auto-transmission and hood scoop are the only giveaways that it's the cheaper Mustang otherwise it's a damn fine copy. And to be fair most people don't care about the little details, it's a cool looking ride, full stop.
You know your cars. I love Mustangs. I like the 69 - but to me the ultimate expression is the 67. Last of the line NOT to be fitted with bullshit pollution control. Concave rear panel (Lights and fuel intake panel) superior to convex or flat. C-Scoops that actually look semi-functional (they never were - but the 67 at least makes more of an attempt than other model years at the cosmetic). Even today if you can get a stock 289 block and either buy a restoration or make a project car out of one that needs the love, it's a fantastic daily driver and not just an antique.
Can you tell my first car was a 67 Mustang? :D White Paint job, Black vinyl faux "convertible" looking top. Stock block 289.
Mine had a semi-unique trait. It did NOT come with bucket seats and console extension down the middle from the dash. Instead it had a BENCH front seat and a standard Ford T-Bar auto shifter on the hump ahead of the seat with a straight-across dash. About 860 Mustangs were shipped that year with that peculiar option. There can't be many left.
Some people might say that's not much of a feature.
It damn sure was a better option on dates in High school than the back seat, let me tell ya! :D

Thank you, Duaffy. I haven't seen this movie yet as it would be a little too intense for my wife but when I am able, I would really enjoy seeing it. Reeves is an awesome guy. One of our first dates was Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure so he's kind of ingrained in our marriage.
On a side note, we live out in the country and constantly have various critters unintentionally posing for photos around the house. Everything from deer and possums to raccoons to MANY types of snakes... Mostly, nonvenomous. So, we're right there with you on the love of animals.

This film is clever from the moment those guys killed that little dog I wanted them dead as the film goes on you take great pleasure in watching John dispatch them one by one plus it has an awesome soundtrack.

Keanu Reeves went from the guy everybody mocked and joked about to became the man everybody loves and respects.
Yeah, Keanu is a legit dude. He never let his fame get to his head, he's so down to earth. He's also a hell of a professional. He goes through a lot of effort to learn every skill he portrays on screen. He can really shoot, fight and drive like John Wick.

Part of what makes John Wick great is that they know he can handle the action so the camera is pulled away so you can see what happen. There is also quite a long time between cuts for an action movie.
Another difference to many other moves is that John Wick is not invincible we can see him getting hurt and suffer. So he is not invincible like in many superhero moves and it feel like there is a real risk of him dying. That is even if we know that he will not
@@target844 Oh yeah, I've watched videos of him training tons of times. And Halle Berry gained my respect for learning how to handle firearms like a pro too. She was also key in training the dogs so they would work with her well on camera.

One thing to keep in mind with that initial meeting - he only accepted the hit contract on John after he confirmed with Viggo that the contract was "exclusive". In other words, while he's holding an active contract to kill John, Viggo can't hire anyone else to do the job. If he just holds the contract and makes progress with it(tracking John down, and "attempting" to kill him), he's protecting John by just not doing anything. No one in the Continental will accept a job already covered by an exclusive contract, and if he goes outside the Continental to buy more competition, the Continental will cut ties with him, to say the least.
Imma correct you on all that:
Viggo offered Marcus the contract in person cuz he and Wick were close. Marcus asked if the contract was exclusive, to which Viggo said no and it was open and it must be handled in a timely manner, to which Marcus then accepted the job. The job being open gives Marcus more leeway to assist John if needed

Keanu is truly one of the nicest people on earth and I was touched by you saying your admiration for his character was why you wanted to react to this. Oh, minor movie trivia, at the end when John is walking off with the dog, it's the same spot he caught his wife when she collapsed.

How I first saw Keanu Reeves as a kid: Bill and Ted, then Speed, Johnny Mnemonic, The Matrix and the rest is history.
Keanu spent months training with firearms and martial arts for the John Wick movies, he's that fast and good. There's videos showing his training and how fast he is
I feel like John Wick was a bit of an experiment in seeing what the smallest yet most heinous action a villain can pull, in order for the viewer to be OK with the protagonist murdering an entire syndicate and cheer when then villain gets it.
Killing the protag's gift of a puppy from his dead wife seems to be the record-holder for now.
I like this woman. Doesn't cringe too much at violence but isnt quite sadistic
16:20 That is a modern-day Dodge Charger...adding that in with the earlier '69 Ford Mustang that John owned and the Chevrolet SS Chevelle (not sure on the year, maybe a '71?) that was loaned to John by the shop owner, and you've got the trifecta of American muscle car brands (well, the ones that still exist...otherwise Plymouth and Pontiac should be in there).
Yeah over the years I kinda took a liking on Keanu with his signature cyberpunk style and being so humble rather than aloof. Sadly then private stuff happened and also his career went south but now with the John Wick series and his deadpan performance in Cyberpunk 2077 I really hope he gets cast more often.
Many aging action stars like Bruce Willis or Schwarzenegger got good roles later on so I hope we still some more interesting projects from the guy.
