just some personal notes for me haha: - 'Let not light see my black deep desires'; macbeth wrestling with conscience and choice, reveals hidden depths of suffering shown through juxtaposition (light - black), contrasts with LM -LM referring to child abuse alot is potent example of how evil will reverse natural order (also evidentical with the scene about the day being dark and animals eating each other) - also shows how hope is lost (children rep. the future ) This video was very helpful thank you! :)
Hi, I'm a European history teacher from the US and I stumbled on your channel while doing my own reading of Macbeth during this tedious quarantine. As Iive been reading the play (the first time since I was in high school) I was reminded how critical Shakespeare is of the ruthless pursuit of political power - to me that's the cornerstone of the play. I was wondering the extent to which you think Macbeth is a refutation of Machiavelli. Shakespeare must've been familiar with The Prince. I cover The Prince at length with my European history class, but have never considered juxtaposing it with Macbeth...I was curious as to your thoughts on the connect between the play and the work of Machiavelli (who has often been accused of being a "teacher of evil").
Thank you SO much for this excellent question and comment. I think this would be a fabulous exploration between Machiavelli and Macbeth. This late Shakespearian tragedy is fascinating through the lens of Machiavelli...I find it fascinating how much appetite there is for analysing Othello in this way! Fascinated to find out more on how you unpick the connections! Thanks again!
