I believe that Macbeth is indeed presented as a tragic hero. For instance, Aristotle stated that one of the six characteristics of a tragic hero is a flaw or error of judgement (Hamartia). Hamartia is evidently displayed through not only his flaw of excessive ambition, but also through his moral weakness and selective perception which eventually does contribute to his death. This links to how Macbeth does allow his wife to consistently manipulate his ambitious desires (becoming king through the murder of King Duncan) as his opinion is often swayed quite easily by Lady Macbeth throughout this play.

The whole play outlines Macbeth as a tragic hero as in the start of the play he is depicted as ‘brave’ outlining the respect he had received from the king and fellow soldiers which led him to be lost in this great recognition. Macbeth is then filled by the witches prophecies making him start to think of that actually being a possibility. After he becomes king he goes down hill evidently which shows why he deserves the recognition of a tragic hero
I depict that Macbeth demonstrates his ambition throughtout the play but we can see it developing on in Act 1 Scene 3 when he first starts thinking about what he has to do in order to become king after he heard the witche's prophecy. And towards the end of the play he faces his own downfall but with courage and full dignity. In his last moments he refuses to commit suicide which amplifies the characteristics of Aristotle's criteria of being a tragic hero as despite him knowing he's going to die he decides to fight with valour until his moment comes. This is evidenced in Act 5 scene 8 when he pronounces his last words, "I will not yield, to kiss the ground..."
Do you feel sympathy for him as an audience member in those final words? This response could be drawn out across a full essay to time but is fantastic as a plan. Great work Sanika!!!
