Thanks Incontrario Motu for this historic recording of the BIG TRIO: Gilels, his brother in law Kogan and Rostropovich playing the "archduke". The trio reaches the musical density of a quartet, the cello lends width and shadow, the piano has the complexity of the full orchestra. And of course the three musicians were among the very best in their respective instruments. Quality of sound is excellent. There is something magical in Russian musicians, a suffering and loving soul.

There is something about the combination of the somewhat steely sound - but very clear and precise - of these Russian recording's from the 50- combined with the absolute dead on intonation of Kogan! And the gentle statement of the theme in the andante is heartbreaking.

A rare gem of musical expression, by the finest of musicians of one of Beethoven's greatest works, and recorded in precarious times in the Soviet Union, which perhaps gives the work that extra edge of intensity and beauty. As said in comment below: 'beautifully delicate interpretation', and just so, in contrast to the horrors that endured in 1956 long after the death of Stalin in 1953. Yet this performance may well have been a testimony of relief and hope to some extent that human dignity, hope and justice might now prevail.

Yes in the 50's as a teenager, escaping the ravages of Europe, I was heartened listening to Gilels' playing. These were pirated vynil recordings that I sought out in NYC and kept wondering how such stregnth, optimism, virtuosity could still persist so far away.

After Stalin Khrushchev instituted many liberalization reforms, not to say life wasn't tough in the USSR, but Stalin's reign of terror was greatly attenuated. Still, let's not forget, there was the Cold War going on. Stalin was clinically paranoid, so such harshness as Khrushchev imposed paled in contrast. Live remained tough, but the purges and the abject terror were gone. Shostakovich's journals are instructive in this respect. After Stalin's death the poor man breathed far more easily!

How is it ive lived all these years witout paying this most famous piano trio must attention . Brahms all 3 have consumed me since middle school and I fell in love with the scores very early too ! Gilels here shows , alertness to felow musicians an sensitivity to music 's being ; true intelligence !Kogan never relaxes but he has the right mood here. e is really one of the most superlative musicians to ever pick
up any instrument ! Beethoven has a comforting, drawn out theme , takes his time developing motifs here personality in some of the piano trios, A Beeth we do not see much in the , piano or violin or more so in the cello sonatas . Not his focus in the symphonies or quartets . There is much more here and they are not trying to be strained ,villyfying or caustic in this music . Amazed , that I'm unfamiliar with this late period trio ! Better find the ket - he is like this in flat keys expressive , warmly expansie like symph 3,4 but not in Bflat op.22 or 2nd concerto or op.106 . Gorgeous moments ! Why didnt Bartok give us a pino trio or piano quartt or quintet. Schonberg we wont talk abut his essays in this genre. Berg i must check seems he left a student piano and string work ?
