Antonio, I have been selling suits for 8+ years and every one of your 10 Golden Rules was spot-on. The only point of difference was whether to buy online or in-store - You must always buy in-store. The average suit seeker who buys an online suit at Macy's at 2:00AM in his underwear while chugging a beer has no idea what he's doing. First of all, he doesn't know his correct size. Secondly, each designer has different fits for different body shapes. You gotta'' find your fit. No exceptions. Thirdly, you're going to need tailoring. Most young guys buy for style, but that tight fit you just saw Jimmy Fallon wear may not work for you. What you need is appropriate for the occasion. I work with guys who have sold suits for decades and that knowledge will make a huge difference in how you look. Get it right the first time, guys. You don't have a second chance to make a good first impression. Again, great video Antonio.
Absolutely, buy in-store. Someone with perfect proportions may get away with buying online, but most of us mortals need to look and test and look again. I am fortunate enough that I can _sometimes_ buy straight off the rack with no adjustments, but the jacket especially needs to be tried out in the store. And even if it fits you, you might find that once you wear it, it doesn't _suit_ you.
Antonio I gotta tell you, at almost 50, I've dressed like a P.O.S. schlub for most of my life. I've taken a lot of your advice and coaching and put some effort into my appearance and it has payed off! People notice and treat you differently which has made a huge difference and has presented me with more opportunities.
Really? I'm 39 and my nickname is basically ragbag due to my shit work clothes I wear for construction all the time. I really want to try this and see what happens.
@@ANTICARBONTAX yes it did, it seems that people perceive you in a different way. I tried it at bars and just everyday life situations. Gotta remember to smile too.
You didn't mention silk ties. They can be so artistic. My dad was buried in September in his favorite silk abstract tie. He looked amazing. Always the best dressed man in the room.
I love your attention to detail and your unrelenting high standards in both video production and content Antonio. You have proven yet again that you are the gold standard in men’s fashion. Well done you!
I had the unfortunate incident a few months ago that after a friends fathers funeral myself and another friend went along to show our support then after we got back to my house we were in the garden having a drink, I was told that I had to keep my suit on with said friend when the dog brought me her ball. Anyway I bent over to pick up the ball and my trousers split, it was a few years old and was bought before I had put on some extra weight so I decided to bite the bullet and buy a new suit. Anyway my local store where I tend to go when I need new trousers, shirts or a nice navy suit were great, I chose the suit that I wanted and they checked the fit in store and then made the necessary alterations before I collected it. You can’t beat a good suit from a good store.
Antonio, just wow. I am soaking up as many videos of yours that I can! Just never took my dress to this level before and it’s just awesome to finally have a compass. What’s more, I am starting a position as a customer service sales professional at Brooks Brothers and honestly, everything you are teaching me is my guide going forward. You’re the man, all respect🙏🏽
I started laughing when you straight pointed me out in the beginning 😂😂💀 “you have not bought a suit and are looking for one for a wedding in two weeks” 😂
Great videos as always. In my field of work, I’m fortunate to have to opportunity to wear my own. I’ve got a tailor overseas. I was able to attach/wear my gear, Comms, Cuffs, etc. My biggest challenge was finding footwear that had both the correct appearance and functionality. Like with you, another Serviceman/Veteran’s advice stemmed from the tradition of his old unit. Old Jungle Boots brought to a Cobbler who installed Vibram Lug soles and replaced the laces with 550 Cord. No, I didn’t do that, but I bought Chukka Boots, cut off the leather soles and installed Vibram Gumlight soles, not as elegant, but hold a good shine, offers ankle support and enables me to stand on the marble floors for hours. Thank you sir. For your videos and your Service.
Perfect!! Dead on!! I Wouk in a small Gentleman’s store in a college town. We sell about a thousand suits a year. This advice is great. Especially for first or second suits as an adult. Everything was accurate from fit to style to purpose. His guidance is very good and obviously based on a good deal of experience. These sometimes seem like small details but they are not. People will notice the difference. Couldn’t be more correct about fit being more important than price. Fit and style will give you a better value. Watch this video a few times, these are classic lessons that will serve you forever.
Antonio, I have been watching your videos for the last 2 years and today you looked your best, sharp well fitted suit, nice tie, crisp shirt, you cannot look any better, keep it up Brother.
Thank you for making this video!!! Yes, I am pretty much starting back at square one. It's been years since I've bought or worn a suit, I was once a 38R, now I'm a 40R. Need to up my style game, that's why I recently joined Real Men Real Style.
Strong video Antonio! I have three suits and my favorite is a charcoal Hickey Freeman suit that is of course tailored. It is a suit of armor that is a statement...I feel great and noticed that I get treated like a VIP when wearing it, Brooks Brothers white shirt, solid red or black tie and some Paul Evans oxfords. A definite good investment that always gets complements and perfect for interviews, weddings and important events. Very powerful garment.
As a guy in urban New York, I work retail part time and I’m trying to transition for that to full time artist, I have no function for a full suit anytime in my future. But I will come back and rewatch this video of course when it is time. Best channel on RUclips.
@@RealMenRealStyle I'm in the middle of a big cut at the moment so probably just off the rack for now. Blazers I bought just a month ago no longer fit so I'll go bespoke once my weight loss slows down, and I've saved for a quality tailor. As for the style. For versatilities sake, being my first suit I would probably go for a solid dark navy, wool, peak lapels, flap pockets with twin vents, pleated pants, French cuff shirt. And of course the usual accessories. I can't decide between double or single breasted, or if I should go for a 3 piece with double breasted waistcoat. I guess I'll know when I see them in person. I'm also going to be thrifting for good condition suits that fit well enough to be tailored for me, so I could end up with anything! :) It's funny, a couple of weeks ago I didn't know the first thing about dressing well. Now I look forward to it every day. It's been life changing. I truly appreciate the work you do. Thanks again! :)

Great video! These "rules" are classic but not dogmatic. We seem to have the same philosophy on neck ties. Keep it simple unless you really want make a statement. I have bow ties and bolo ties for special occasions, but on a day to day basis I opt for solid colors or simple patterns.
Cannot even begin to explain to you how valuable your video is...I really really wish I had this information earlier on in my career. Excellent video (pant leg break - no one explains this!! Thank you!) and I am better dressed bc of you.
Great video Antonio. I am 50 years old and in business and I still benefitted tremendously from this video. Anyway, I have an assortment of cheap, unfashionable, Ill fitting suits and need to see what is worth and can be tailored and really want to treat myself to one new suit. LOVE what you do. The first notification for a video from this channel that I've seen in a while. What a coincidence that this is the first day in a few weeks that I've had occasion to dress up a little.
Perfect timing, thanks Antonio! I need to buy 3 suits for a new job I'm starting next month and would've made some big mistakes if I hadn't watched this 🙈😂
Great as always Antonio! 13:36 I like how you make the distinction with US style. I'd like to hear that more in your videos, and I know you'll be more familiar with US styles than European styles, but there are definitely trends I see which are acceptable in the US that aren't common and look... odd, in Europe. I think I'd said in a comment before, some more videos highlighting the differences in style between US and Europe would be useful. I'm happy to provide some examples, but I don't want to waffle on. 😄
Outstanding advice, Antonio. I had a modern slim fit suit tailored for me, and as soon as I gained some muscle mass, it immediately became too small. Be wary when buying tight fitting suits, gents!
I would just like to say that any one buying a belt or belt combination from Anson’s their belts are outstanding I had a slight problem with the micro lock system on a duty belt customer service was on point gave them my information looked it up and sent me a brand new one free of charge. Not to many places left in America like that. Two thumbs up.
I will be suiting up for a wedding next month. Bought my suit and got it fitted last week. I made the mistake of not bringing my dress shoes for the fitting. The pair they had was far too small for my feet. So, they had to eyeball it. Do remember to wear or bring the dress shoes to the fitting. Thanks to what I learned from your channel, I had them add suspender buttons. I find suspenders more comfortable.
Great informative video as always and have just bought some knitwear and some denim from the organisation here in the UK. Will be looking for another suit next month.
I have bought 2 suits in my life which is a charcoal and a black one. Both of which I wear always a suit vest with whenever I wear them. For the black I wear a navy blue vest with a gingham type pattern it's still all navy blue though with a navy blue bowtie and a medium grey over coat and looks very good. If I am going to the symphony w friends or I'm doing a gathering that involves fancy clothing during the winter this is my go to. Edit: the getup I mentioned was inspired off some looks from photos I saw of European clothing from the 1840s- 1870s. There are actually alot of cool diverse styles from that era surprisingly.
Oh man, I usually hate men telling me how I should dress, but this was faultless - I agree with and try to do most of the things you suggest but also picked up a couple of great tips....One small thing I suggest with dress watches is looking for a vintage dress watch (you can feel great knowing its history while wearing it, and no one ever compliments you on your watch anyway). Thanks for a great video!
This is such a great video. Big fan here. Sometimes, when I go in to buy a suit, I am always second guessing myself and always thought the more money I spend, the better the suit.
That belt brand looks nice. My first time looking at your videos dude. Super clear, practical, and useful. I am from Mexico and wonder if this belt company ships its products to Mexico. I would love that!
You're awesome! I don't think I would've bought my suits if it weren't for your videos. Got a navy, charcoal, and.....black suit. LOL. Off the rack, on sale and altered to fit. Works for now until I can afford a bespoke suit.
It’s because of this channel and Gentleman’s Gazette that I now own 6? suits whereas previously owned zero. All are Brooks Brothers except an Indochino which should come Monday or Tuesday. Thanks!
What about many of the Italian ties(often with a complicated classic pattern, example: maddalion pattern). My question is where do they fall in the landscape of casual and formal?
There is so many different combinations about the watch that’s what makes the man the most unique. I really like Sean Connery’s Rolex in the earlier Bond films, like Goldfinger. It included a nylon band and a white coat
I have 8 suits on average I only spend around 120/suit after getting them tailored I get lots of compliments all the time but I want extra know how I want to take my suit game to the next level I’ve got 2 3 piece sets I love the way I feel wearing a suit!!!! I wanna learn more from the pros
Great info. I'll be helping my newly employed son shop this weekend. Can he get away with buying a good navy suit and using the jacket separately as a sport coat? Thanks.
Intresting points you made until you showed the Daniel Wellington watch - very cheaply made watch priced at a premium. Much better classier watches to be had at the same price. Good video that aside.
Hey Antonio! I need some advice. I need to buy a suit this year for my senior year, and I really want it to be a great suit, you know? Perfect fit, the details I like on a suit(peak lapel, double vent, single breasted 2 button, pant waist adjustments), and I want it to be something I can wear many times, because like you always say, in the big picture that cost will pay off if everytime I wear it I feel amazing. So naturally I gravitated towards a grey, something more versatile. I want to be able to add a shirt + Tie to make it stylish for warmer or cooler seasons, but I also need a suit in the near future with a dark color. Should I stick with a medium grey or go for something like a Charcoal? Worst case scenario, I'd have to rent a black or navy for the event when that happens if I want to get my grey suit, cause I don't know that the Charcoal will cut it if I'm trying to be able to make it work year round. Hope that makes sense and I'm looking forward to your insight.
Made to Order (MTO) is the sweet spot these days. Companies like J. Hilburn and Indochino, or even Brooks Brothers now, keep your measurements and preferences on file plus you get a remake or two until it fits the way you like. As they release different cloth and style, it is easy to order up something new. My preference is J. Hilburn and their suits run from about $800 up to $1600 depending on material and options. For $1000 it's a classically styled suit that'll last 15+ years with proper care; hard to beat that when you do the math on cost per wear over time.
I have enlisted in the navy and am about to leave for basic. Should i get rid of almost all my civilian clothing? What should i keep? Should i keep everything in storage? Is this my opportunity to give away everything civilian and start over with my wardrobe?

Great as always Antonio! 13:36 I like how you make the distinction with US style. I'd like to hear that more in your videos, and I know you'll be more familiar with US styles than European styles, but there are definitely trends I see which are acceptable in the US that aren't common and look... odd, in Europe.
I think I'd said in a comment before, some more videos highlighting the differences in style between US and Europe would be useful. I'm happy to provide some examples, but I don't want to waffle on. 😄
Hey Alasdair - have you seen this? www.realmenrealstyle.com/english-vs-italian-style/
Thanks for the help!
The wedding i'm attending is far in the future but i still want to know what style and what i need to look out for.
Outstanding advice, Antonio. I had a modern slim fit suit tailored for me, and as soon as I gained some muscle mass, it immediately became too small. Be wary when buying tight fitting suits, gents!
Yes! Tight fitting suits are going to be a problem.
I have been waiting for buying online vs. buying in store to be addressed. Thank you!
I'm glad we talked about this as I get a lot of requests to feature this more in videos.
You have helped me a lot Antonio.. I rocked a 3 piece navy suit in my school farewell with all your guidance. Thank you ✌️
Love reading comments like this. Happy to know you find it useful.
I always go back to your new and other older videos for advice. So far i think the people agree to how i dress in formal. Thanks.
Excellent...very well put together
This is a real reference
Thanks 🙏
I would just like to say that any one buying a belt or belt combination from Anson’s their belts are outstanding I had a slight problem with the micro lock system on a duty belt customer service was on point gave them my information looked it up and sent me a brand new one free of charge. Not to many places left in America like that. Two thumbs up.
Wow ! thanks I'm 52 ,and some of these things are new to me and Ive had many things tailored to my fit, Thanks
I subbed because you know what you are talking about and tell it in a way all men of all layers of society understand you. PS i love your style.
Good suggestion. Thanks William.
Great informative video as always and have just bought some knitwear and some denim from the organisation here in the UK.
Will be looking for another suit next month.
Do you recommend belt loops or side tabs?
This is an incredibly helpful video!
Not Antonio but I would say side adjusters if you do indeed have the option.
Haven't bought a suit in 10 years and I have a wedding in two weeks.....yep......you.....you got me Antonio.
This channel is AWESOME. I've really had a lot of success refining my style. Thanks RMRS.
Antonio, you're the man! Great content, I love it!
Aww, thanks Dedan. Very kind of you.
14:11 When to hold your tie and collar with a gold safety pin?
survivor030406 “GFY” Cuffy! Haha
Incredibly valuable content! Super packed with information - love it!
Excellent advice! Just what I was looking for.
Thank you for the tips!
What about the german "parka" that is so popular today....is it worth a mention?
This is such a great video. Big fan here. Sometimes, when I go in to buy a suit, I am always second guessing myself and always thought the more money I spend, the better the suit.
Love a sharp-dressed man. This was very interesting and informative for women, too!
I love that Steve McQueen Heuer Monaco, Antonio!
I am a college student, and I am going to an interview in a few days. Much appreciated for the lesson!
That belt brand looks nice. My first time looking at your videos dude. Super clear, practical, and useful.
I am from Mexico and wonder if this belt company ships its products to Mexico. I would love that!
thanks a lot for the help, i'm gonna buy one as soon as my job starts
What a great video, entirely credibly, amazingly helpful. Very cool gentleman
Great Video. I feel much more informed about selecting a custom suit!
I love the fact that you support family owned businesses!
Thanks!
Dude you are the man thank you for this. Made going in getting a suit so much easier with all your advice thanks you!
What about many of the Italian ties(often with a complicated classic pattern, example: maddalion pattern). My question is where do they fall in the landscape of casual and formal?
I have 5 pairs of Anson's buckle and belt. Awesome and great value.
Anson Belt , order a box set . should be here today or tomorrow , looking forward to getting them . Vancouver Canada .Chris
Awesome! Thank you! Helped me finish a school project!
Getting well researched for getting myself a fresh new business suit, something I haven't done since high school lol.
Wow. Great video as always. Thank you Mr. A for the education
There is so many different combinations about the watch that’s what makes the man the most unique. I really like Sean Connery’s Rolex in the earlier Bond films, like Goldfinger. It included a nylon band and a white coat
Guys a flawless pure white shirt is timeless and classic. I love a pop of colour on a guy. I love pink and lavender. Guys you can rock it
Lots of very helpful info here, thank you. How about hats? I'm totally bald and wear a Trilby with my suit most of the year round in the UK.
I have 8 suits on average I only spend around 120/suit after getting them tailored
I get lots of compliments all the time but I want extra know how
I want to take my suit game to the next level
I’ve got 2 3 piece sets
I love the way I feel wearing a suit!!!!
I wanna learn more from the pros
I got promposed yesterday, so now I actually have to care about what I show up to prom in. Thank you for the help.
Great info. I'll be helping my newly employed son shop this weekend. Can he get away with buying a good navy suit and using the jacket separately as a sport coat? Thanks.
Excellent content, I learned and enjoyed every second of it!(of course I´m subscribed.
Intresting points you made until you showed the Daniel Wellington watch - very cheaply made watch priced at a premium. Much better classier watches to be had at the same price. Good video that aside.
Daniel Wellington and MVMT watches are overpriced cheap Chinese crap. Better get a Cartier tank watch.
on the watch topic. Are smart watches recommended?
Thanks, Antonio. Super informative.
I'm not Antonio but I'd reccomend a darkish grey. Itll be fine year round. Grey is like ketchup it goes with anything.
Michael Strahon suits are amazing. Look good and well.
The white background makes your dress shirt look like a very light green
Vốn những bài hát ngày xưa đã rất hay rồi mà thêm giọng hát giàu cảm xúc của Phúc nữa thì đúng là cực phẩm cover😍
Time pieces question... can Iwatch with an simple band flow with an Business suit?
Is this my opportunity to give away everything civilian and start over with my wardrobe?
suit school very much appreciated. I don't have a father or dressy big brother to show me the ropes. very much appreciated!
I would like to hear something about socks :)
I’m a fan of flashy and pattern socks but they’re not for everyone and every occasion I believe.
