I liked how the sound wasn't the typical, Walking Dead-esque, high-pithced raspy "ack, glkkk, ackkkk!" Sounded a bit like it, but also reminded me of the angry wailing (which is terrifying in the games when running from them and hearing it).
Maybe having neil druckman there instead of him handing it over telling them to go nuts, probably helps. I hope they stay true to it. Then just go resident evil halo bonkers on the part 2.
No... Ellie was supposed to be a stand in for Joel's daughter, Joel's second chance to undo his past failure to protect her... Now she's just some rude 20 something Joel doesn't even know with no link to his daughter. Episode 1 and they already butchered the ending.
the show did something really amazing at the start, specifically the diner scene where the infected is chasing joel where the infected never cares about barriers and just jumps over them with reckless abandon. the shows team did such an amazing job encapsulating how insane and primal infected really are
Yes was good but also was super funny if you have the humor of a 12 yr old like me and falling is funny and I loved it. My fav thing about zombie stuff for sure. The reckless abandon
@@obamium7330 i find the distinction so stupid. They're essentially zombies out of pop culture, just with a different spin. People like yourself who are anal about the definition of zombie vs. infected are just being pedantic and insufferable. They're basically the same, just get over it
Man, even after playing the game so many times, Sarah’s death was still a gut punch in the show. I didn’t think they’d make me sad for her again, but they pulled it off.
I love the horror elements they added. That scene with grandma Adler just looking like a harmless old lady to you seeing her seizing in the reflection and then later her eating her daughters face off was shock value used correctly
I said to my family last night that the specific scene with the Adlers would be one of the moments that TLOU would skyrocket in popularity. I was semi-wrong, because the scenes that came after were equally as intense and powerful!! This entire pilot was flawless.
When they began the car sequence with joel, tommy and sarah i was blown away at how faithful it is to the game, camera shots and everything. It felt organic too. Hope they've went this route all the way through
I was in awe watching. Sarah asking almost all the same questions she did in the game. Driving past the burning house and the family is almost identical, line for line, frame for frame. The only change in the entire ride before the car crash fake out I noticed was, the ambulance not driving by after Joel told Sarah and Tommy “someone else will come along”.
@@brandaoberg4841 IMO Ep 3 was well made and regardless of some storyline tweaks, the series is progressing the same way as the game. Joel got his battery/car, now they're gonna start driving off to meet Tommy

This show has little going for it and episodes like the third are clearly just platforms these activists are using in their crusade to brainwash the audiences with flowery depictions of sinful relationships. They want people to think it’s good so they run out and see it for them to have to watch two dudes together doing only what a man and a woman should be doing. I bet most of the people here leaving comments gushing about the show haven’t even seen it and only just want to feel like they’re part of something and/or farm for likes and replies. 😂
They don't want actors to mimic Troy and Ashley's performances. They want pedro and bella to bring their own A game. Hard for non actors to understand. My younger brother who passed away in 2021 was a senior texture artist for naughty dog and worked on the game. It was beautiful to see his work contributed to the inspiration for this series.
@@TheUnderWaterBoy I just saw someone call the whole show racist because of it. It’s almost laughable how weird it is to get upset over something like that
Taking out the spores makes a lot of sense. Having the characters constantly wearing masks makes it much harder for the actors to do their job. Its much simpler and easy to understand when you can see all the facial expresions the actors are making
And also, this may be nitpicky but, putting on a mask realistically should take you quite a bit of time, unlike in the game where they put it on like it's any plastic mask and are now completely immune with unlimited use.
As a bonus: the latin american version brought in all the OG voice actors from the latin american dub of the game. Watching the series and hearing the characters sound just like in the game really added to the experience
Are the Latin/Brazilian voice actors good? I'm genuinely curious because I only know English and have a girlfriend that loves the Japanese dub of anime and I cannot legit understand the acting and cannot hear the emotions or acting in what I've currently heard. I don't have anyone to tell me they suck or they're good so it'd be pretty interesting to hear that other language adaptations are actually good
Anyone could tell The Last of Us show was gonna be peak quality. They literally got the showrunner of Chernobyl consulting with the writer of the game. It's a match made in heaven.
"Anyone could tell" isn't fair, the marketing was a constant "You liked the games? Well fuck you we don't care about the games". I'm just glad the first episode was great.

For me the spores were more for visual story telling and to show more how Ellie was immune. It was always a cool little reminder when everyone has gas mask up, but Ellie is just walking around like everything is fine.
@@cake94309 The cordyceps in the show are everywhere tho, they also grow really big unlike the real ones so no, it should spread out more and not confined to one room.
I love how they added scenes from the game nearly line for line. Like when Joel pretends Sarah didn’t fix his watch, and how she said she sold hardcore drugs to get it. But even small shit like Joel laying on the couch killing time with Ellie. “You mumble in your sleep.” I can’t wait for the scene with Henry and Sam. That’s going to be heavy.

The “don’t let actors play the game” may actually be beneficial since perhaps some actors will be all like “Hah, I Can do better here, I’ll put a twist on this character by chang-“ and now they’ve ruined it
This practice is also fine in TLOU's case as it's literally directed by the same guy who wrote the games, so if an actor happens to stray too far, then he can correct said actor. It's when shit like the Halo show happens where none of the directors and producers gave a shit about it other then the bare basics. That's where it becomes the most stupid plan known to mankind.
@@lapizlapoppy Yeah, in the show's companion podcast, the showrunners state that this is the main reason. Also if the show was shot in order (not necessarily shot for shot, but episode by episode), they don't want the actor's knowledge of what happens in the future to affect their performance of the present.
I think they told Bella not to play the games because they wanted her to make Ellie her own character, just do it and it's for the better if that's the case. I love the actress they chose for Ellie. Marlene, well she's literally played by her voice actress, so
Watched it last night with my Dad. This shit is insane. And as soon as they recreated a... certain scene, involving... a certain person's death, I knew exactly what it was and was just absolutely fucking amazed. If they keep up this shit, there's no fucking way this doesn't become the best adaptation of our time. taking out the spores takes out a big part of how Ellie moves through the world. her not needing a mask was a huge part of her character and how she told others she cant get infected. it doesnt bother me either because i know they will find new ways to do it. i have a lot of trust in the creators and confidentally think the rest of the show will be outstanding
I'm hoping that they'll have a scene where she gets slightly nicked by an infected. That would do the same thing as the whole mask thing, but with even more of a tense moment involved.
@@ralucamaniu9524 I feel like Joel and Tess had to put on their masks before meeting Ellie. I’m not 100% sure though, it’s been a while since I’ve played it.

The detail of Joel’s neighbor refusing to listen to him after he tells her to stay inside, only to go and try to help the neighbors he just ran over and get munched in the background… perfect.
When they announced "From the creators of Chernobyl" I was in. That show is so fucking good, and when HBO decides to put their whole Warnerussy into it, it's gonna be one of the best shows of the year, if not the best. They've already confirmed it's only going to be two seasons and I think they can actually make some changes to the sequel and adapt and move some things around that make it more enjoyable and not as random. I also think it's kind of smart for them to avoid the "From the hit video game" type marketing because it'll get random people to check it out and not just be like "oh it's some shitty video game thing".
I have’t seen anyone talk about it but the lighting details are spectacular in the show. I feel like they paid so close attention to the texture, and the highlights & shadows of the characters and setting on screen, emulating video game graphics. It was a subtle touch but it really amazed me
They are doing a really good job so far. One little detail I realized at the end of ep2 was the beginning of the outbreak was at a flour and mill factory. Probably ships worldwide. Sarah wanted pancakes but no flour. The adlers made biscuits and fed it to the grandma. Good thing it was raisin cookies cause it put off Sarah. The writing is superb as of now. Edit: it helps with one of the writers from the game is also helping create this adaptation
It also contradicts the entire fact that the infection is cordyceps, as they infect things like ants and spiders with spores, so now the infection doesn't feel like it's even from the same thing, it's just an entirely different source
@@CosmicEntity268 yeah kind of feels like its just a zombie movie now lol. The spores had such a huge impact on world building and the narrative. SO many dramatic elements directly involved spores. Now its just don't get bit by the walkers lol
Agreed. They should have just made it regular zombies and not even add the fungis in the show if they were going that route. I really wanted to see the scene were ellies mask breaks and her friend finds out she's immune.
@@mahyj181well actually before spores tendrils was the thing they were gonna go for it was in the concept art of TLOU you should look it up you’ll actually be surprised how terrifying tendrils might be
Really cool how they got Merle Dandridge to act as her own character from the game as the leader of the Fireflies. And how the actor who plays Ellie's mom voices Ellie in the game. And how the voice actor for Joel appears in the show! Loving it so far.
Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker didn’t just voice acted for Ellie and Joel, they were the actors for it, with mocap and all. Not really fair calling them just voice actors for Ellie and Joel. Just a small clarification.
The only thing I'll say about the spores is that it might take away from front and center that Ellie is immune. They could've used it as instances where she has to either do things by herself or save Joel. But yeah, other than that. Terrific first episode.
I agree that it might take away that ellie is immune on the other hand I always thought it was insanely unrealistic in the game because as soon as you can visually see the spores you'd already have breathed in so many of them that they would be already infected. You'd basically have to constantly wear that mask to not get infected.
@@Landgraf43 The thing about no spores is that they won’t do any cinematic shots with a gas mask POV or the eeriness of a room having so much spores you are able to physically see them in the air.
The spores are rlly just a gameplay thing as if spores were the method of transmission then in actuality most people would pretty much get infected as they spread so fast
The cinematography of the car scene had me blown away! It has the same wheels-on-the-road bumpiness of when you follow it in the game, but the camera makes you feel like you're sitting in first person mode shaking the 360 screen back and forth to spectate everything happening around you
Charlie is absolutely not kidding some of the opening game scene stuff is literally shot for shot is done INCREDIBLY well hats off to everyone who worked on the first episode and fingers crossed for the future
Even to the small details like Sarah saying that she sold hard core drugs to get Joel’s watch fixed and later with the conversation between jole and Ellie right before they are about to leave the quarantine zone
Charlie here doesn't understand why showruners and actors are asked to not play the game. When they explicitly say it is because they want real performances and not an imitation. Because the ideal is that actors use their own life experiences to bring up emotions and not just play pretend. And when they talk about deaths in videogames, they said in video games the death of goons and mobs become just pixels, because of the repetitive nature of the gameplay, enemies are seen as obstacles rather than an actual threat.
It was honestly amazing, I had high hopes but never expected it to be that good, they really took care with this show, I was shocked to see how many negative reviews some RUclipsrs posted, lots called it boring and woke, then every replied in their comment sections were negative based off the reviews and decided they wouldn't watch it as a result, I think people should watch it and make up their own minds rather than take the word of one RUclipsr.
@@DerrisDerrison I absolutely agree, but having watched many of Charlie’s reviews and other content I feel like he and I are pretty typically on the same page, so I put a lot of stock in it. @@MrPipol-nm3cd I think you have a partial point here but also in doing so devalue the original work of the voice actors, which may or may not have been your intention. I understand that it’s important to bring in real emotions to these characters and breathe life into this world, however that can still easily be done having played or read or watched the source material, whatever form of media it may be. It’s a valid concern that if no one on the team has experienced the game that that same level of emotion, not necessarily the same exact emotions or the same exact scenes, may not come across. It’s also just kind of in poor taste to brag about that sort of thing because again it displays a lack of respect to the source material, intentional or not.
They even referenced the car crash too! The intersection that which they crash in shows the car almost hitting them. I thought the car was gonna crash into them too, but nope it barely miss em. Kinda neat
i loved the truck scene. the camera angle was perfectly set from ellie’s perspective and it gave off the feeling that you entered the video game. and being someone who watched the intro of the game so many times back then, i am just so pleasantly surprised with how happy this made me. and i love how they used lines and mannerisms from the original game!!! what a good time to be alive and watch my old favorite video game come to life.

So far, they did an absolute justice of The Last of Us Show. The 2nd episode signified Tess's death more. The 3rd episode made me care SO much more about Bill and Frank's relationship and gave them a somewhat "happy" ending in comparison to the game where frank hangs himself and Bill gets left alone until he slowly rots away.
I got so glad when the intro music was the original music. And when Sarah said «I sell hardcore drugs». That line is so important for their relationship imo
Frl Pedro’s performance captured the emotion of that scene so well the loss in his eyes and almost immediate numbness that becomes such a key part of his charecter and the build of his and Ellie’s relationship
I'm glad Pedro and Bella didn't listen to the creators who told them not to play the game. It shows that they knew the characters they were meant to be portraying. Thus far they've been doing AMAZING. Bella, Pedro, and Anna have all stolen my heart already. I'm very excited for more and I'm... Definitely a bit obsessed with the series
Pedro watched his son play it because he said he “sucks at video games.” And Bella watched all the cutscenes on RUclips, which is fine because she isn’t missing out on much narratively from not playing the gameplay. The show is so amazing.
I think the spores are pretty important to the story for the sole purpose of elli being immune to it. Like how Joel makes her where a mask dispite being immune incase someone sees her breathing it in. Thats probably the only reason
I think the only reason people are upset over the removal of spores is it actually does impact relationships as Joel saw Ellie as cargo more or less until they go into the subway/sewers and he sees her breathing spores and not changing or getting infected thus solidifying his trust in her as he realizes her importance
I have no problem with the spores thing but when they adapt Part II for season 2, its literally going to change how Dina realizes Ellie is immune because Ellie's mask gets broken and Dina tries to give her own but Ellie stops her, knowing just one breath of that stuff you're infected, so Ellie stops her and shows her, as well as how one of the WLF members die with Ellie and her tumbling in the spores. Like I said I personally have no problem with it, but i am curious how they'll rework certain story beats without it
I wonder why they changed the spore stuff. It made a lot more sense on how the whole world got fucked pretty quickly since it was an airborne thing. Also makes it scarier too.
@Benny i think it actually spread so fast from flour, in intro, they didnt eat pancakes, joel says he is on atkins(joke prolly), the grandma was eating biscuit
@@BlackWolfOnFire Most likely so they could show actor’s faces in infected areas. Hard to capture terror on a face when it’s covered by a gas mask and many tense scenes are gonna be in infected areas. They probably spent a pretty penny on these actors and don’t wanna cover their faces

From the first episode, they are pretty spot on so far. Some lines came directly from the game and I appreciate that. The vibe of the zombies and the setting is the same too.
I also love the PTSD touch that you don’t see in the games and how Joel is much older and more beat up instead of being a killing machine like in the games (you can get away with that here because it’s not a game and your MC doesn’t have to be superhuman)
Yup in game after 10 freaking minutes of playing in post infection present day you already slaughtered like 20 people. Fireflies and that sleazy scumbag selling bad goods and them killing each other is far more fitting.
It's funny cuz charlies right on the surface those initial comments are kinda weird, but in retrospect it makes sense. When they were talking about death just being pixels, they meant the player deaths being just pixels. When you die in the game you just come back, no big deal. In the show death is always permanent. And not having the actors play the game would be sketchy EXCEPT the guy that made last of us is involved! He didn't want the actors to feel preasured into just copying what troy and Ashley did, he just needed to make sure they matched the spirit of what they did. All in all these guys have made not only the BEST gamw adaption to a tv series, they've made one of the best television shows to come out in the last few years. Absolutely wild.
I think something that really brought the show together was also the music. They stayed true to the style of music that's in the game and music really helps. They could have added action music or something but they didn't

I’m watching this after episode two, and I’m really hoping for a weekly video on the show. Huge TLoU fan and I’m really enjoying where this is going. Following and expanding characters other than Joel and Ellie. Even the changes they’ve made to the infected seem well thought out and tasteful. Big shoutout to Pedro Pascal, the man is an amazing talent and so good for anything in nerd culture with a fan base because he respects them and wants to deliver something special
Ashley Johnson was an adult voicing a child character (and she absolutely killed it) but the actress in the show for Ellie IS a child and yet still i think she pretty closely encapsulates game-Ellie's energy
Bella Ramsey is 19 LMAO She's still a teenager and younger than Ashley was in the first TLOU but she's most definitely NOT a child. BUT, yes, she actually surprised me in this episode. She still has to win me over, unlike Pedro who already has, but it's a perfect first step.
This show handled the intro perfectly. They gave the intro the full respect it deserved by not only recreating it, but adding to it. They gave us a lot more time to understand these characters, their dynamics and the world they live in. Also gave us the time to emotionally attach to them. That’s what did it for me. When the breakout finally happened, it felt a lot more tense and real. Getting to know these characters, then hearing scared tone of Sarah’s questions and the subtle nervousness and uncertainty in Joel’s and Tommy’s answers throughout the car scene made me feel like I was in the car too. I guess that’s why this show got me to cry ab a death I saw happen 10 years ago
Adding a little to the Sarah/Joel timeline was great. It give you a better understanding for the Ellie/Joel relationship. I LOVED it. Cannot wait for the next episode
I watched it with my dad, and all he knew was that it was based on a video game, and he was mouth open the entire episode. I told him that the opening was almost 1 for 1 from the game, and he couldn't believe it. It was impressive as hell.
well not really 1for1 as they make it start in the day instead of the night and they add sarah going to the store fixing joel’s watch and sarah is black and not white with blonde hair
@@leesup999 some scenes are really 1for1 though, like the scene where Joel lays on the couch to “kill some time” it’s literally the exact same dialogue with almost completely similar shots

Spending a little time with Sarah made her death hit me wayyy harder than the game tbh. Fantastic job overall. I’m still skeptical about the actor playing as Ellie but I’m giving her a chance. Overall I’m looking forward to the series.
Agreed on all of that, I am not sure about the actress playing Ellie either. I just don't think she looks or acts like Ellie. Her portrayal may evolve into a more faithful version of Ellie, but so far she hasn't been good.

I had an amazing nostalgic feeling when I watched the episode, the video game easter eggs just made me jump with excitement, I was really worried when they first announced it because the last of us is my fav game of all time, but damn was the first episode great. Also at the end of the episode, you can actually see a clicker at the left of the screen over the building screaming, when i recognized him I was thrilled and I really can't wait for the next episodes, hopefully, they don't ruin it midway
Two episodes in and it's absolutely fantastic and the only added substance is extra backstory that makes 100% sense to the game but allows for more of character development and show development
It was really good. I especially liked the way they shot the truck scene as they are fleeing. Also the actress who played Sarah did a fantastic job particularly in “THAT” scene. Overall pleasantly surprised but also fingers crossed 🤞🏼 that they continue to stay faithful to the source material.
Yeah I didn't mind the change to Sarah and she did that scene just as good, but I didn't like Pedro's rendition....but then again he's VERY expensive these days to pay and Troy Baker had to do the scene nearly a dozen times to get "right" which basically made him want to quit the game getting into that sad of a character for a couple of days (even though the pay off was worth it, don't blame them not wanting to do that to Pedro).
@@blindfire3167 i actually thought Pedro was fine. Most of the main cast did a great job imo. Ellie tho I’m the fence about, but she may surprise us we’ll see.
Kinda sad spores arent in it because it made the atmosphere in some areas really creepy but it had no change on the gameplay so swapping it for the “hive mind” thing thats in episode 2 makes more sense for a live action show.
Yeah but if the spores infection was in real life it would not just stay inside the buildings it will spread everywhere almost impossible to survive everyone would literally have to wear Gas mask for the rest of their lives or else they will get wiped out... so now you know why it is a bit unrealistic and almost ridiculous to put that in the TV show it was a good decision to replace it with the fungus having network of connections from long distance, it's more realistic because that is actually real they base it on how fungus act in nature.
It's a testament to how good this show is when I've replayed the game 4 times already and still felt the intensity and the emotions in this show. I hope they keep this up because the pilot is really solid!
I was worried about Sarah. I felt like it would be almost impossible to have someone so young be able to deliver a good enough performance that would make that moment as impactful as it was in the game but she fuckin nailed it!
I might be in the minority here but I don’t like how Joel gets hurt in the first game. In a game that tries to be more realistic with its combat, he definitely should have died after getting impaled and not getting medicine for hours. He should have been dead within minutes. It was totally unrealistic and it’s like my only critique of the first game. When he gets hurt in this game, hopefully it’s like a gunshot to the stomach or something that he could realistically survive with good medical care. That would be a change I welcome wholeheartedly.
@@philly_sports1558 He could honestly probably just fall on his back and they could do away with the impaling part. Landing on your back from that height would surely justify Joel needing time to recover

I was a little confused at first watching them stand right next to a body with no gas mask or protection from spores, finding out they've been removed is a bit of a bummer tbh. I feel that it is a huge part of the story missing, it made everything so much more terrifying, dangerous and spread faster. It's also another way Ellie proved to Joel she was immune, plus it was badass seeing her have a special ability nobody else had.
@@troyareyes the first thing he refers to anyone else ab her immunity is "ive seen her breathe enough spores to take out an army" or something like that so id say its one of the main ones

The spores explains how it was able to spread so much, so fast, and be so hard to avoid - it's airborne. That's fucking horrifying. Now they're kinda just zombies - which is a bit meh. Still great tho.
@brodieescool4192 that's how he sold ellies immunity to Tommy but I feel like Joel himself was sold when tess did her "this is fucking real, joel" speech.
Your audience reaches wide Charlie, and as someone who spent a long time working on this adaptation I'm breathing a sigh of relief that you and the rest of the audience (gamers and otherwise) liked it!
I honestly liked the spores in the game simply because of how unique it was and also how it was a creative use for how the zombies functioned in this new world. They even mentioned a infection going through the air hinting at something similar to a spore but I guess it would be hard to replicate the scenes of spores in rooms.
the spores played a role in the second game when ellie was tracking down nora because ellie was able to breathe them in and confirm who ellie was to nora, cementing her view of ellie and her motives in a way. also in the first game joel was fully convinced once he saw ellie breathing them in.
The end of the intro made me tear up in the game, but here I was fucking _sobbing._ The way it was handled here was even more heartbreaking because we got to know Sarah better, and the acting was phenomenal. Had to pause the episode to collect myself after that. I am very, _very_ excited to see where this adaptation goes.
It's a very little thing, but one thing I really like is that Joel was moving Sarah's legs. It was like he was trying to get her to walk even when he knew she couldn't.
@@XxDeadpool99xX That's exactly how they hit you in the game though, so I see why they did it like that. Shows you just how brutal this is about to be.
A common thing in theatre or film when doing adaptations of pre made material is they usually encourage the actors not to watch/read/play the material it's based on so they don't just replicate the same performances. And so far I think it's worked to great effects Bella and Pedro feel true to Joel and Ellie but they don't feel like carbon copies it's really well done. Excited for more.
@@isaacmendes1926 Marlene and Sarah aren't major characters though, and for Marlene especially they changed her lines quite a bit. I don't think they would've rejected an actor for Ellie or Joel if they played the games but did really well, it was just preference to keep things fresh. Both Bella and Pedro watched some of the game anyway
regarding the lack of spores, I can see how from a production standpoint it makes making the show that much easier, no need to spend on little particle effects and such, alternatively using some kind of fog machine to create the effect is annoying to work with sometimes. But I'd say there are two moments where spores play a significant role to the narrative. When Joel questions how Ellie can breathe in the spores and not die solidifies his trust in her word. Like it's a provable thing she can show to people she trusts that she is indeed immune. Secondly, and this is in the sequel, but when Ellie and Dina are running away from the infected Ellie's mask gets damaged and that's how the immunity news was broken to Dina. Significant in that instance considering Dina nearly took off her mask, risking her life for Ellie's. I'm not mad that spores are gone but I'm scratching my head at how they're gonna pull off those moments without them. Like how is Ellie gonna prove she's immune unless she gets bitten again in front of Joel and Tess?
It saves a lot of bs. Realistically the spores never made sense in the game, the moment you're near it's to late. In game you crash through shit and fall smack in the middle of them...Moment you reach for your mask it's already way to late. Realistically it makes less sense since you can't put on a standard mask in 3 freaking seconds like in the game. Filters would also be to scare, and of course it limits actors/ feels horrible to wear
@@bink5242 Never spoke about 2 never played, can't stand how they did Joel & Ellie dirty. And how that unrealistically large she beast gets away scott free. I recon I won't like the next season at all xD
IDK, changing it from spores to mouth tentacles makes Ellie's immunity less important. And it makes the virus feel less threatening. Like the whole reason Covid was/is such a big deal is because it's airborne. Also spores is the only way fungus reproduce. (But apparently it was so actors weren't wearing masks all the time.)
The spores actually played a part in confirming Ellie is actually immune and she isn’t lying. In the game Joel was hesitant to believe Ellie but once he saw her breath in spores and not affect her he realized it was true. Not a big deal though.
@@_M41KU_ it created tension during combat, made the threat of the infected much more complex, obviously shows us Ellie was telling Joel the truth of her immunity, and in part 2 it had a major role where Ellie revealed her immunity to Dina and Lev needing a mask and showing the primitive nature of the scars. Plus it makes the infected unique in comparison to every other zombie flick out there
I was originally kinda worried about the spores, but after hearing why the made the swap to tendrils, it made a lot of sense. Spores are airborne, which is why they were able to spread so quickly. But if they’re airborne, they’d be everywhere, not just in the enclosed spaces, literally everyone would be infected.
Not necessarily. Just because it's in the air doesn't mean it'd automatically be everywhere. Spores are tiny and the wind blows em away and spreads em out like dandelion seeds. I didn't even know they removed spores and that's kind of annoying but oh well, first episode was amazing.
Dont know if they really said it, but I always assumed that it had to be a certain (high) concentration in the air. I personally am a bit dissapointed, because it removed a layer of danger and the show robbed itself of some cool visuals.
what they could do, is when Joel and Ellie get to a more heavily infected area have spores there, but it has to be in an area thats completely overgrown with the cordyceps. so make it a rarer threat, but still a bit threat and hazard to overcome
I enjoyed Sarah going to the watch shop and travelling to city, and also her interaction of her with the care taker and old woman. I enjoyed the slow build with the news, helicopters, planes flying by foreshadowing the danger
the only bad part about replacing the spores with tendrils is if there is a season 2 and if season 2 is based off part 2 when Ellie's mask breaks revealing she's immune
The only thing I can think of about the spores is that Joel did not believe Ellie was immune at all until he saw her just breathe in the spores without the mask.
It's a running theme (especially in the second game?) that Ellie hides her immunity by pretending to need the mask, hiding the scar with tattoos etc. Her immunity is revealed to Dina from her mask breaking. I think it's a pretty cool dynamic that will get lost when they remove spores but at the same time it's not a completely crucial thing
@@dansken610 No, not critical and there is plenty of ways they can have someone discover her immunity just by seeing the clicker bite since it clearly isn't a normal one.
@@eliteteamkiller319 I'm half convinced Pedro Pascal put his foot down after the Mandalorian and requested that he get a role where his face wasn't obscured for large portions of time.
Quick note on the spores: While they were definitely a game mechanic employed to heighten a sense of danger in a area, kinda a soft difficulty rating, the only time I would expect it to be a problem not including it is when Ellie proves to Joel that she’s infected. Spoilers: for the first hours of the game, Joel is extremely disconnected from the job of getting Ellie to the lab, and skeptical about the validity of Ellie’s infection. He pretty much only continues with it not because he believes Ellie or wants to find a cure, but purely for Tess. This puts Joel and Ellie’s relationship more to cargo smuggling where Joel is the only one with any power. All this changes slowly when Ellie saves him from drowning, when Ellie’s allowed a gun, and that memorable moment when they are pushed into a spore ridden area and Joel puts on his mask in a panic, looks at Ellie and is like “how are you breathing this shit in.” For the first time in the story, (I think this happens before she gets a gun), Ellie has more power than Joel, and even says something like “I’m not lying to you”. Ultimately this is all very small and I say all this because I just like to gush about my favorite game, but it is an example of how TLoU was full of small lines of dialogue that made everything so much more meaningful and memorable. I’m sure the show won’t lack these heartfelt moments, but that breathing in spores moment was always one of my favorites.
They kinda already had that with the realizing she's probably immune. Idk if they'll harp on this more as the season progresses, but i feel like a lot of ppl omited this from their memory or didnt watch the entire episode? SPOILER (kinda) She gets tested by that infection gun the officer has and after Joel kills him Tess picks up the tester it shows red (which means she is infected) and they both r worried and confused. Im sure they'll dwelve into it in the 2nd episode as they get a little further from the city
(Spoilers) They could probably just fix it by letting an infected bite her inside the Boston towers and skip the subway area to get to Bill's town quicker. I think that area was only a swimming tutorial anyway.
The new details that The Last of Us series adds makes the series so much more able to draw stronger emotions from the gut-punching scenes in the original game. Despite having already played the game, the series still gives me this feeling of always being on the edge of my seat just because of all the small connections they make with characters that weren't made in the game, such as the guard that Joel sells drugs to, which also loops back a little bit to when Sarah made a joke about selling hard drugs which adds just the smallest amount of emotion to the ending of the episode. The worldbuilding done before the fungus breaks out is just spectacular and added so much to the suspense of the beginning. All of the relatively smaller details and new scenes that have been added so far make it so much more enjoyable to watch as someone who has finished the game I just hope that they stick to only changing and adding things that don't alter the core storyline of the original game.
I think they removed spores and replaced them with tendrils because of the "Hollywood helmet problem". They need to show the emotions on the faces of the actors during stressful situations like this. Which is ironic, since Padro Pascal also had the lead role in the Mandalorian, which "solved" the helmet problem.
I'm blown away by how incredible this show is. The acting, cinematography, story, and world building are all beyond amazing and Pedro Pascal blows the lead role out of the water. The intensity and build up of tension in the first episode gave me genuine anxiety, something I almost never get whilst watching films or series which demonstrates how well the show turned out. This is how videogame adaptations should be done. I always thought The Last of Us would make a great show as it is rich with an engaging and emotional story; this proves that without a doubt. The critics giving it 9's and 10's (or the rating equivalent) were definitely not mistaken. I can't wait for episode 2!
@@PowerRedBullTypology You’ll never find someone that looks like a 1 to 1 from top to bottom in comparison to a video game character he pulls it off perfectly nonetheless. Don’t get so caught up in the little details Pedro killed it.
i agree for the most part with the spores - just one scene im upset we won't get is elie walking around without the mask on and joel being like "fuck i keep forgetting you're actually immune to it". that was a cool moment in the game.
I guess telling the cast not to play the games is so when they see the script and have the emotional scenes it’s from the heart and not trying to copy how it happens in the game
Spores are used so Joel can trust Ellie, since he couldn’t believe she was actually bitten and survived until he saw she could breathe spores with no mask. So it will be interesting to see how they make him trust this version of Ellie without them
Also, isn't the entire idea of the "spores" is because the cordyceps causes its host to essentially explode - spreading the spores and infecting others? That's why it's so scary, because the Ant will climb to a high tree or plant and essentially latch itself onto as the tree, allow the spores to spread over a wider area. So it's weird they got rid of that as it's one of the main reasons why the virus spread so fast and was so hard to contain. Without the spores, they're essentially just zombies. Either way though, the show is fantastic thus far.

Really cool how they got Merle Dandridge to act as her own character from the game as the leader of the Fireflies. And how the actor who plays Ellie's mom voices Ellie in the game. And how the voice actor for Joel appears in the show! Loving it so far.

@@omegapuppyttv i had the same thought
Wait, huh?
It was honestly amazing, I had high hopes but never expected it to be that good, they really took care with this show,
I was shocked to see how many negative reviews some RUclipsrs posted, lots called it boring and woke, then every replied in their comment sections were negative based off the reviews and decided they wouldn't watch it as a result,

I was a little confused at first watching them stand right next to a body with no gas mask or protection from spores, finding out they've been removed is a bit of a bummer tbh. I feel that it is a huge part of the story missing, it made everything so much more terrifying, dangerous and spread faster.

The same way Tess believed her. Tess gets bit and notices shes getting symptoms 1-2 hours later and Ellie is fine
Also people actually can’t see spores and they’d spread around the world instead of staying in a room

Na it was a big part of both games and TLOU lore in general
That's a huge deal to take out. It's not a small part. That's the only reason Joel realizes she isn't lying. Total piece of shit show confirmed.
@@_M41KU_ IIRC the spores play a heavy role in Ellie’s chapter of TLOU2
@@_M41KU_ it created tension during combat, made the threat of the infected much more complex, obviously shows us Ellie was telling Joel the truth of her immunity, and in part 2 it had a major role where Ellie revealed her immunity to Dina and Lev needing a mask and showing the primitive nature of the scars. Plus it makes the infected unique in comparison to every other zombie flick out there
@@_M41KU_ you said it's a small part and not a big deal. I said it's a huge part and a very big deal. Reading is fun you should try it one day
I was originally kinda worried about the spores, but after hearing why the made the swap to tendrils, it made a lot of sense.
I personally am a bit dissapointed, because it removed a layer of danger and the show robbed itself of some cool visuals.
what they could do, is when Joel and Ellie get to a more heavily infected area have spores there, but it has to be in an area thats completely overgrown with the cordyceps. so make it a rarer threat, but still a bit threat and hazard to overcome
the thing is, their reasoning for getting rid of spores is because it was too “unrealistic” bearing in mind that it’s a zombie game ☠️
I think they didn't have enough money to recreate spore areas
I enjoyed Sarah going to the watch shop and travelling to city, and also her interaction of her with the care taker and old woman.
I enjoyed the slow build with the news, helicopters, planes flying by foreshadowing the danger
the only bad part about replacing the spores with tendrils is if there is a season 2 and if season 2 is based off part 2 when Ellie's mask breaks revealing she's immune
She gets bitten in the neck but doesn't turn. Easy.
God forbid if they make season 2 based off the second game, if they looked at how many people hated it, they won’t make it.
My farts are better than Charlie’s farts.
The spores also make it more terrifying. However, you want to see the actors' faces. And THEY certainly want their faces seen.
@@eliteteamkiller319 I'm half convinced Pedro Pascal put his foot down after the Mandalorian and requested that he get a role where his face wasn't obscured for large portions of time.
Quick note on the spores:
While they were definitely a game mechanic employed to heighten a sense of danger in a area, kinda a soft difficulty rating, the only time I would expect it to be a problem not including it is when Ellie proves to Joel that she’s infected.
@@DoggoWillink Breathe*
also in the second game spores played a role in letting her soon to be gf know shes immune
They kinda already had that with the realizing she's probably immune. Idk if they'll harp on this more as the season progresses, but i feel like a lot of ppl omited this from their memory or didnt watch the entire episode?
SPOILER (kinda)
She gets tested by that infection gun the officer has and after Joel kills him Tess picks up the tester it shows red (which means she is infected) and they both r worried and confused. Im sure they'll dwelve into it in the 2nd episode as they get a little further from the city
(Spoilers)
They could probably just fix it by letting an infected bite her inside the Boston towers and skip the subway area to get to Bill's town quicker. I think that area was only a swimming tutorial anyway.
Didn't you guys see the trailer. They already teased Ellie joking about turning when Joel wasn't to sure
Are you worse then Charlie, dump.
They casted this show amazingly. Whoever the actor for Sarah is, she did such an amazing job at her death scene. 10/10 effort

@oh no cringe detector I am reporting u for spreading misinformation
I love how the scene where they get in the car to when they crash is almost shot frame for frame
So it will be interesting to see how they make him trust this version of Ellie without them
She just gonna get bit n not change
Also, isn't the entire idea of the "spores" is because the cordyceps causes its host to essentially explode - spreading the spores and infecting others? That's why it's so scary, because the Ant will climb to a high tree or plant and essentially latch itself onto as the tree, allow the spores to spread over a wider area.
So it's weird they got rid of that as it's one of the main reasons why the virus spread so fast and was so hard to contain. Without the spores, they're essentially just zombies. Either way though, the show is fantastic thus far.
I mean, have they specifically said that there's not?
I was thinking since there like tendrils she may like fall into them or something
@@serv-on she already has the bite on her arm. Isn't that proof enough if she doesn't change within a few hours?
