GWM is about to become a ubiquitous name in the world, none more so than in Australia 🇦🇺 . They produce a quality product at an unbeatable price. The others need to watch out, esp. Toyota who unbelievably in the face of such competition keep raising their prices! Well, they and most of the others are about to find out the hard way that pride truly does come before a fall. The buyers are always the final arbiter and they are always the best judge of value for money and that's fast becoming a no - brainer! $70K for a Hilux? Tell 'em they're ďreamin'!
Exactly! I don't get the (unjustified) superior attitude of some of the Japanese brands by blatantly RAISING their prices straight in the face of their competitors! Great review guys, good to see an unbiased review despite the brand’s reputation. The Cannon X is very easy to live with and actually quick once you learn how to manage the go pedal. 👍
After reading positive review after positive review on these GWM utes I thought it was time to check one out. First impressions, it's large to view compared to others. I then clambered in, rear seat, very spacious, not confined in any way, then passenger seat, this is anything but a ute, more saloon than ute from passenger seat prospective, finally driving seat. This just doesn't come across as a standard dual cab ute, every thing says comfort, easy reach design, my my, the interior comfort, appeal, is superior to average dual cab. Everything is so easy on the eye. I actually preferred the artificial leather of the lower models, it just was more comfy to be confined in for hours but I guess the perferated genuine leather would breath better on long hot days. Whilst I'm not after a dual cab, this would certainly be a contender for my money. Understand the positive reviews now. NB. Tried LDV also as at same dealership. There was zero comparison, the LDV is a typical dual cab, not a saloon as the GWM.
Yep, you can't blame the Chinese to have built a pretty damn good vehicle. It's up to the rest of the manufacturers to pic up the game but not the price.
I brought a new great wall steed through the company I work for . I was offered a certain amount to buy a truck . I could of had a five year old ford or Toyota . I didn't want the hassle of a second hand one having MOTs etc so I had a great wall. I didn't have much trouble with it other than the reverse switch in the gearbox and the water in the diesel sensor in the filter. It was a 2012 year . When it went for the first MOT the inspector said that the chassis was the cleanest rust free truck he had ever had in the test centre. He said usually a ford , Toyota, Nissan are rusting out . He had a 2015 Ranger in there and it was covered in rust underneath. Only sold the truck when it was eight years old as needed a van . So there's not much wrong with a Great wall Steed except it's like going back in time for the way it drives as it can be hard work compared to modern trucks .
Great review. Put a smile on my dial. A mate of mine has a model from 2012 which various members of his family have used and abused and it's still going. I reckon this would be ok

I own a Cannon X with 30000kms. I have always been a supporter of the brand until now. I went to the dealer Autostrada in Western Australia, for a service and had them look at a minor warranty issue for a delaminating park brake button, along with recalling for the headrests to be replaced. This work was booked in over a month prior to the service date. It’s been over a year and when going to book my 30000kms service I enquired again as the the park brake and it turn out that even though the dealer told me it was warranty and would be replaced they had not even ordered the part and not submitted a warranty claim to GWM/HAVAL. Not only this they did not replace the recall item on the headrests. When I approached GWM/HAVAL HQ I was told it’s my problem and they have nothing to do with it. So basically, your on your own. Ok so you might think this is a dealer/service department issue but can you imagine if this was a larger warranty issue and this was the support you expect to receive. I was going to look at a new vehicle next year and I can be sure GWM/HAVAL are off the list. Warranty support is critical to me and this seals the deal. Thanks for no support GWM/HAVAL, if warranty is important to you seriously consider other brands, as GWM/HAVAL do not provide customer support.
It's one thing buying a phone or an iPad that's assembled in China (by an American owned company), it's another thing buying a 40k plus car, owned by the CCP that probably comes with some complimentary listening devices...
And even better guys on the 2023 Shanhai Cannon Poer Ute, where it's interior can be had in the Cream and Blue same plush interior as the GWM Tank 500, which truly resembles the interior of a Bentley Mulsanne, seemingly like a direct copy, all wrapped in sumptuous Nappa leather, and still priced below a Ford Ranger etc. ...
Drive a cannon and a ranger back to back and then see where the price difference is. If you can’t afford a ford or Toyota it’s probably the pick… it just the “will it last” thing that haunts..
I mean if they can put a space station into space and a rover on mars…and I dunno make everything in our houses, Iam sure the Chinese can manage to build a pretty good Ute
This is a pleasant test of a family car for city and highway driving. As a test of a 4WD ute it was a dud. I was waiting right through to the end to see it taken off the road by so much as a millimetre. Not a 4WD ute test at all.
I'm driving a 2014 dmax, I purchased it with 180k.on the clock... it's still perfect! I work it hard every day pulling 2 ton trade trailer. Will this budget car be the same after 10 years??

I like how you discuss things with your mate cameraman but being a hobby photographer I really like to know what camera and then you use for this segment
Yes one of biggest gripes is the lack of gas struts aiding the bonnet & tailgate 😤 It probably costs the manufacturers $10…..add $20 to the price…..jeees 🤦
It's new, Do this review at 500,000 Km like you would a Hilux. No talk about it at 300,000Km. Then talk about it after use on a farm. But I have no doubt it makes a good mall crawler
its a 4x4 ute but no review of offroad use or things a trades person would do with it like put heavy things in it. be nice if you had some thoughts on that but its all good, there is plenty of other reviews out there. Good to hear your thoughts on how city yuppies would use the ute.
@@flex20144 I just asked you a question. I guess based on that answer we won't see you back to correct your 'Statement or Suggestion' if you are wrong.
Good luck sourcing parts, the dealers can’t even get correct part codes. Can’t wait to see how many are rusted out, have delaminated plastics and falling apart in general give them 5 years max
To be honest, thats sounds like the new ranger. Know of atleast 2 ppl that have had major rust issues. SO much so Ford, on the quiet, have taken ute back, completely disassembled and started the treatment process from scratch. Yes I have test driven the ranger love it. Want one. Will just wait another 18mths for the manufacturing process to be sorted out...lol
You forget that China is the biggest car market in the world where GWM has to compete with Toyotas and Fords locally. Their cars are tried and tested in the real world before they even consider exporting them to overseas markets like Australia.
I'm seriously considering buying one . Especially now they are $5000 cheaper until the end of September. I have heard a whisper that GWM is upgrading the engine to the 2.4 from the Alfa. Is this true?
Idk about the 2.4 but what i can say is the 2L is genuinely sufficient. I got one last week and you really don't need it if you're driving at regular speed. I liked the discount more than the extra power.
Ford? Promised the best and delivered a whole new batch of mechanical issues, such as vibrating tail shafts, with owners having to return for work. Then there’s the promised F150 return, crickets chirping 😢
In my opinion if you’re on a budget good buy by if you can afford a hilux or ford then it’s obvious ! Give GWM a few years they will knock other brands out the park .
I bought a SsangYong musso ultimate sept last year what a great truck, bigger than ranger, all leather ,heated and cooled seats $ 45700 on the road .way cheaper than the Big names all the tech and More, thank you SsangYong.....
One thing I'd be endeavouring to find out is the spare parts ability for any vehicle I'm thinking of purchasing new, especially a Chinese made one. If there is a good local spare parts supply then they're probably okay but if spares need to be sourced from China or they're not available at all I'd be inclined to steer away from it. Generally dealers and after market parts stores don't stock spares for vehicles that sell in low volumes.
Ford also forgot, customer service, backing their warranty and ACCC requirement, the fact that saving $1 here and there inducing faults for their clients between 60-120k km. All just affects their reputation, future sales.... Imagine a car company that actually did everything right by the client and their product.....Man, they would be making money hand over fist, now and 10-15 yrs later...Oh what a dream I am having...lol
All this vehicle needs to kick the others in the bum is 4h on sealed surfaces, slight interior update get rid of the tacky silver trim on the dash and fans ,make it black! And exterior just needs a black edition and then this will kill it! I’d buy one with those simple changes
No, it's already that way now. Chinese cars shit on Korean and Japanese and are butting heads with the Germans, it's just anti-China morons who can't see it.
Perhaps “welcome to the future “ Perhaps, a bunch of Leyland P76ers Could go iether way folks! I would be givn it a while b4 jumpn on board, ee will see, i reckon, in next 2 or so years. By thaf time they may not be $$10-15k or more under the competition

I test drove one, it could not pull the skin off of a rice pudding. Most uses are bought to work, in my case to tow. I am surprised you have not tested the Ssangyoung Ute , considering you are a former Ssangyoung owner as it is also cheap and loaded. PS - I agree, if you are buying it to just use as a run about and use the tray for moving bits and pieces every now and then, then it’s perfect for that price, but if you towing or going outback , forget it, you need the real deal, a ranger …..

Thanks for no support GWM/HAVAL, if warranty is important to you seriously consider other brands, as GWM/HAVAL do not provide customer support.
Yeah I agree just spend another 30 000 and get a Toyota or Mazda equivalent. Yeah right.
It has small quirks, but no big issues, good value for money and it can manage to do the jobs pretty well overall
I quite like the look of this rig, especially with some light mods
I like the way you guys have a realistic conversation at the end by the way
I am picking up mine next week
I'm so glad I bought one. 2022 GWM Ute cannon, it's an awesome car to drive.
Good unbiased and funny review. Great job guys
Someone needs to do a cheap ute showdown comparison between the SsangYong, GWM and LDV please
Great review Matt. Looks a beautiful beast 😍
Anyone arguing Chinese made concerns, you may throw away your iPhone iPad now.
piss off apple products have some of the highest qc regardless of factory location. Who knows what standard these GWMs are built to.
It's one thing buying a phone or an iPad that's assembled in China (by an American owned company), it's another thing buying a 40k plus car, owned by the CCP that probably comes with some complimentary listening devices...
🙄🙄🙄
Chinese made = rubbish
and Tesla as well
And even better guys on the 2023 Shanhai Cannon Poer Ute, where it's interior can be had in the Cream and Blue same plush interior as the GWM Tank 500, which truly resembles the interior of a Bentley Mulsanne, seemingly like a direct copy, all wrapped in sumptuous Nappa leather, and still priced below a Ford Ranger etc. ...
Drive a cannon and a ranger back to back and then see where the price difference is. If you can’t afford a ford or Toyota it’s probably the pick… it just the “will it last” thing that haunts..
Only cheap Charlie's buy these chinese uses....think they are saving money but NOT A GOOD INVESTMENT
I know, that's what the poor Ford owners are thinking after the engine failures are gremlins starts kicking in
That’s exactly what I think about the new ranger. They do not have a good history in reliability.
Just wait for the new ones its gonna blow your mind
2.0 Hybrid, 2.4 Turbo and the V6 3 liter much bigger, more lux just crazy
So they are supplying models with more power? That's cool. What I want to know most of all is how they go off-road.
@@matthalpin1981 there next ute will be a bigger game changer.
Yes, get the V6 option and throw another $10-$15K into the mix = No longer an affordable 4x4.
amazing! great value and looks robust quality. thanks to the chinese to offer such a option on ute competition.
Good review, but ya get what you pay for. Like to see this thing with 150,000klm on it
Plenary of them with high kms, no issues ever been reported
Well said, humorous and witty explanation
"let's check it out in the interior cuz that's where my nind is blown"
"so the interior is not going to knock your socks off"
In Zimbabwe this car is called the P series.
I like how you discuss things with your mate cameraman but being a hobby photographer I really like to know what camera and then you use for this segment
I remember during the eighty, it cost me $399 to buy a 12 inches Japanese colour TV, now yoy can buy a 30 inches HD TV with disc player,
love your videos mate .
Thank you!
@@CarSauce you gave it the sweet&sour sauce!
They’re getting pretty good wraps. I’d spent an extra $15k if they increased engine and suspension product.
Love ur vids bro... u got a new subscriber!!... please do the haval h6 hybrid when u get ur hands on it
4x4 twin cab ute doesn’t handle at high speeds on twisty roads like a supercar.
Shocking. 😂
Best value for money !
Sadly most people have been trained to only see quality in German car makers. So they'll never accept this.
Why sadly? Why do you have problem with that? Buy what you like and let others do same..
Most stupid ones. Let them stick to their cars while you get the same at a reasonable price point.
Anyone who has been victims of oil leaks of AUDI and BMW for the last 10 years won't agree.
Most people who's ever owned a Merc, BMW or VW will tell you how much it costs to maintain one, especially when it gets old
Yes one of biggest gripes is the lack of gas struts aiding the bonnet & tailgate 😤
It probably costs the manufacturers $10…..add $20 to the price…..jeees 🤦
Is that a holden Colorado in your profile pic?
@@Oz_Men_Life_Style yes. 2019 model 👍
bonnet/tailgate struts mean that much? How often you opening that bonnet lol?
@@kspau13 don’t you check or change your oil or top up your washer bottle? or need to get into the tray bed? lol
@@RocketRod63 you do that daily?
It's new, Do this review at 500,000 Km like you would a Hilux. No talk about it at 300,000Km. Then talk about it after use on a farm. But I have no doubt it makes a good mall crawler
its a 4x4 ute but no review of offroad use or things a trades person would do with it like put heavy things in it. be nice if you had some thoughts on that but its all good, there is plenty of other reviews out there. Good to hear your thoughts on how city yuppies would use the ute.
Lets all just See how they run after 4 years and 150k+ kms
We all know how Rangers run after 60000kms with their gearboxes.
Will you be back to correct your statement if they are running just fine after 4 years and 150k+ kms?
@@kspau13 lol u know the difference between Statement and a Suggestion ? Gwm owner ?
@@flex20144 I just asked you a question. I guess based on that answer we won't see you back to correct your 'Statement or Suggestion' if you are wrong.
I had a Great Wall SUV that got to 183k and 8 years.
What about parts availability, service and maintenance quality and pricing?
Their cars are tried and tested in the real world before they even consider exporting them to overseas markets like Australia.
everything is all good just 1 thing i am worry about, long term parts availability
If they had given it 500Nm or more then they would worry the top utes but as it is it’s not good enough for towing heavy stuff 😎
Thank-you for NOT calling a truck a car.
Call it a ute and not a Truck as that's what it is
In my opinion if you’re on a budget good buy by if you can afford a hilux or ford then it’s obvious !
Nice video, do one for mahindra
Great review 👍. When are these Ute makers going to put stronger engines for off-road warriors ? No power=no buy 🤷🏼♂️
5 years ago I could buy a Triton gsr for $37k. What happened ?
One thing I'd be endeavouring to find out is the spare parts ability for any vehicle I'm thinking of purchasing new, especially a Chinese made one. If there is a good local spare parts supply then they're probably okay but if spares need to be sourced from China or they're not available at all I'd be inclined to steer away from it. Generally dealers and after market parts stores don't stock spares for vehicles that sell in low volumes.
Would you get this or a ssangyong musso
What’s wrong with installing a good engine🙄!? Ford did listen to the customers on that one!
Ford forgot to install a good transmission for their customers.... for decades
It is a good engine, 400Nm is more than sufficient.
nice GWM pick up truck 🚐⛽💰💲🛣⛈️🌜👍👍
Hey Matt brand like Ute good you people like ford and Toyota and Nissan and Mitsubishi Ute
Nice soft interior is fine but i dont think its going to hold up to wear and tear. Def. a ute for the city cruiser, not the weekened warrior.
All this vehicle needs to kick the others in the bum is 4h on sealed surfaces, slight interior update get rid of the tacky silver trim on the dash and fans ,make it black! And exterior just needs a black edition and then this will kill it! I’d buy one with those simple changes
The order of best looking utes for me is ford ranger raptor, RAM Ute, GWM cannon lol
Hey @CarSauce team, can you please make a full-detail video for the Mahindra Scorpio ute. I would really appreciate it. Thanks
I would wait for the second model of them
Good review
I remember my dad telling me in the 1980's how bad Japanese cars were. Is Chinese made going to go the same way within 20 years?
No, it's already that way now. Chinese cars shit on Korean and Japanese and are butting heads with the Germans, it's just anti-China morons who can't see it.
Funny fkrs! Loving your work fellas, keep it up!
Paid $39800 drive away for a new Ranger XLS in 2020 how things have changed.
Perhaps “welcome to the future “
Perhaps, a bunch of Leyland P76ers
Could go iether way folks! I would be givn it a while b4 jumpn on board, ee will see, i reckon, in next 2 or so years. By thaf time they may not be $$10-15k or more under the competition
Trump promised you a big beautiful wall and NZ would pay for it 😂. Kidding, good honest review
Once the Chinese utes get a V6 turbo diesel and they're still 20k cheaper then the competition they'll sell 10 times as many as they do now.
“Cuuaarrrs”. Good review guys
Traded my last two Toyota's after 500k of hard work & only for tax & refreshment choices... they're both still running & I got good resale.I never look at the alternative "wannabees" with doubts about my purchase.
Hilux used to sale at $40,00!
yeah, now they're what, $60+ for a base model & around $90K for a top spec SR5? Crazy.
Toyota and all others are playing Mannoplay game thanks China again brings more reasonable price car.
Keyless entry nice until your battery dies, I'll still stick to the old standard
its got a standard key inside the fob mate
Bro really said 30k "That's like 3 really big TV's"
Yell out when it’s done four of five hundred thousand klms trouble free, because that is what buyers look for not cheapness.
RIP Ranger and HiLux! 😂😂😂 Man, you've been putting magic mushrooms in your Weet Bix.
That is delusional at best.
What’s it like to tow a 2.5 t caravan????
My caravan is 2140 ATM and our GWM CANNON X tows it well when in sports mode
I test drove one, it could not pull the skin off of a rice pudding. Most uses are bought to work, in my case to tow. I am surprised you have not tested the Ssangyoung Ute , considering you are a former Ssangyoung owner as it is also cheap and loaded. PS - I agree, if you are buying it to just use as a run about and use the tray for moving bits and pieces every now and then, then it’s perfect for that price, but if you towing or going outback , forget it, you need the real deal, a ranger …..
Don’t know what you drove mate lol
They go alright
Put it in sports mode don’t tow right on the 3t limit and they go alright
For the price they are the best bang for buck fuck 70-90k for a ute
I doubt you did drive one with that review lol
Ranger is the real deal for premature breakdowns. Yes.
Why don't you just tune the Ute surely would fix the power issue
Talk to all the Ranger owners with cars riddled with gremlins and engine failures
GOOD HONEST REVIEW...
