It's two bands , they both get credits . Not to mention when two powerhouses, both the original and singers and stipes with band, sing It on the same stage is a wonder too ! Automatic for the people .
@@lindamon5101 You do know that should've just means should have? Like, it's is it is......actually, why does it matter, just enjoy the video and get a life
It's not a competition. It's half of two band performing a classic song loved by all. Thanks, guys. This is awesome. Not "better than" not "worse than". Really wonderful.
I’m the lead singer of a band, The Spiral Theory, here in Toronto, ON. We play tributes to The Police, U2, and R.E.M. We always thought the sounds blend so well together between the songs of these bands only to stumble across this video, in turn, to make it more convincing than ever 🙌🏽
20 years ,right, already,we're getting o-o-old. So hard to say and admit the o word. Wish I'd have listened to some of the things they tried to tell me ! Heh.
They called themselves Automatic Baby, from Automatic for the People and Achtung, Baby. Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton came to the US to see the inauguration. They ran into Mike Mills and Michael Stipe in a bar. Stipe wanted to do "One" with them. They were reluctant but he was persistent. And I think he plied them with drinks too. I like Stipes Vocal more than Bonos.
He was just excellent at most things he did in this band. There is an episode of Song Exploder on Netflix about “Losing My Religion” and rest of the guys in the band are still reverent about his contributions.
These sorts of collaborations in the 90s were amazing from this to temple of the dog, and even later with the velvet revolver, etc. loved the 90s. Thank you REM and U2 for turning me on the music when I was probably nine years old in 1989. I remember reading the lyrics and not understanding what they meant at nine years old but as I moved on in life they took on a special meaning for me. I love so many of your songs, even those songs that never made the radio, b sides, etc. You saw me through some happy and difficult times. Thank you for being a personal poet for me.
This song prove's REM was years ahead of the music world if this was a new song today we would all be wow this is awesome it will never get old makes me think of cuddling my girl and falling in love for the first time the album is the best album EVER!
There are bands in Athens Georgia to this very day that are still influenced by these guys. Maybe not like twenty years ago but you can still hear it in some of them.
I have the same birthday as Bono and same age as Michael Stipe. How f*ckin’ fortunate was our generation to have these two bands write the anthems and soundtrack of our lives
Holy crap! Michael Stipe just made this song ten times better. If i were an artist i would never let R.E.M cover my song because they would do it so much better than the original!
I'm telling you I love both bands to death have been there since the start of both their careers and this is one of those rare instances where the cover out does the original that's correct Stipe over Bono :-)
I still don't know to this day why this happened. It's great I always thought REM should of done an official cover of this song and maybe U2 would do like Fall on Me or something like it.
had something to do with Bill Clinton's inauguration in 1993. They called themselves Automatic Baby, combining the names of their two latest albums REM's Automatic for the People and U2's Achtung Baby.
I hated they realized their time had come and gone ,but respected that decision . Love this song when u2 sang it ,but r e m. Blew the roof off with it ! I'd love to run into him in the world .
So beautiful. You cannot compare this to u2 fuck shit voice version, canot compare to anything.Michael is just amasing, love his voice in any song especially live versions
i agree both are superb band and have written wonderful music for the past 25 years. Well done both of them. Stipe sounds wonderful on this track but credit bono and co for a wonderful song. REM + U2 = great , great music. thanks and enjoy
If I’m not mistaken, this was performed in 1992. Achtung Baby and Automatic For The People both being on my favorite album list, then and still today. Over the 30 years which have passed since then, I am certain that all of the things which could possibly be said about this performance have been said, and many times over, at that. Me being a longtime R.E.M. fan, I’ve always had the deepest appreciation and respect for Mike Mills, his musical ear and ability to add exactly what’s needed at the perfect moment, as well as the restraint to leave the spaces between. Oh, to have my time machine finished, to travel back into 1992, to be able to convince Bono to sing “find the river” or perhaps “nightswimming” with the Edge playing acoustic guitar, and Peter and Bill from R.E.M., on mandolin and bass respectively, as the counterpart, foil, companion, to this one, to this “one” Sometimes the things which could have been pale in comparison to those which were. One last thing: Dennis Miller. One of the greats. As far as Weekend Update hosts go, there is no equal. I will die on that hill.
i love that im listening to this high, and the time of the video is 4:20 and no ' u shouldn't need weed to enjoy music' posts, its awesome high, sober or mad wi it !
Dayum! Stipe could sing the phone book and make it sound soulful.

Dude, Michael Stipe kills it and to be fair, I almost feel like R.E.M. should've written this song!
It suits his voice and the sound R.E.M. has.
Should have written. Eng 101
It's two bands , they both get credits . Not to mention when two powerhouses, both the original and singers and stipes with band, sing It on the same stage is a wonder too ! Automatic for the people .
But only Bono could write lyrics like these.
Ummmm no!

This rendition gives me Goosebumps, Michael’s voice is perfect for this song.

Well said 👍🏻
How have I never heard this! Two of my favourite bands of all time! Michael's voice is perfect for it. ❤
Gotta love a man who can make you FEEL a song...Not just hear it...

There is no words to express the emotion that this song pass to me.

R.E.M and U2 i grew up listening to both and still can't believe it's over 20 years since this version of the song was made. TIME FLIES.
Over 20 years!! Sounds great!!

my love and respect to U2,but REM sounds so good in this song.he nailed it.two thumbs up.
Who can possibly dislike this..? It's a great cover this song could almost be a rem song. Be great to hear Bono and Michael duet on it.
No Bono there pal
@@andyw5962 he said it would be great if they did duet ❤️
Just when you think this song can't get any better, you find this! I cannot count how many times I have played it. EPIC performance.

U2 And R.E.M - One
Michael's voice is just awesome .
Michael Stipe KILLS this song. So well done...
An amazing song. Michael sings it beautifully. This was his peak voice imo. Love it so much. He has one of the most unique voices of all time 😊
Notice the respect Michael gives this song...straight forward..no ego...

Melora Foy I thought called them in Ireland, are you sure it happened the way you tell it🤔🤔🤷♂️
Everyone's said all that needs to be said about this outstanding performance. Just a nod to Mike Mills, a wonderful backup singer.
He was just excellent at most things he did in this band. There is an episode of Song Exploder on Netflix about “Losing My Religion” and rest of the guys in the band are still reverent about his contributions.
Exact
Wow, Stipe sings it like it's his own.
+cassandra5322 This is the point where I drew a line between the two bands. His version is unreal.
Stipe sings with so much more sincerity than Bono. Its the difference.
cassandra5322 I heard him say in an interview it's the song he wished most that he wrote
Always thought this song as monotone and boring... this change my mind
Bono wishes he could sing it like Stipe
Two of my favorite bands from the 80s. ❤️
+Lisa Knell ...and both were at their best during the first-half of that decade.
Lisa Knell. right on , I think I'm still stuck there !

Love it. Love it. Love it. It's been a long time since I've heard this. I love when his eyes roll back in his head!
Now I want to see Bono sing his rendition of Losing My Religion 😂
Bahaha YES 🙌!
Bono lives that song as he sold out to the antichrist globalists.
I have been looking for this version for years now at last I found it and I can say this is the best version ever of this great song
May this never be taken down. Stipe owns this to a top level.
What a great version!
My word that's a great rendition
Simplesmente, a melhor versão cantada desta música!!!!!
O que falar de algo tão bom; música boa não se questiona!
There are bands in Athens Georgia to this very day that are still influenced by these guys. Maybe not like twenty years ago but you can still hear it in some of them.
Two of my favorite bands .......great times .......
It's a great song...here sung by a vocalist that has the sincerity to pull it off.

Wonderful version!
I once heard Bono comment on this rendition - something to the effect of " 'One' is a fantastic song and it always deserved an amazing singer"
Goosebumps. This rendition is way better than the original one.
