I Made a Big Mistake. Oh No, Snow!

After spending over a month in the desert, all I wanted was to see some trees. So I drove to Julian California. Julian had some nice trees as well as being a great and friendly town. But I wanted more trees. So I drove up to the San Bernardino Forest and camped at a Yellow Post Campsite. Free dispersed camping is my favorite kind of camping, and the Apple Valley Yellow Post Site was a very beautiful place to camp. Unfortunately, being at 6000 Feet and still wintertime, I encountered snow. The Apple Valley Yellow Post Site didn’t have cell service. It was also a dirt road. Since I didn’t like the idea of possibly getting stuck for a while, I drove to the town of Idyllwild. Idyllwild is one of my favorite towns. While camping in downtown Idyllwild wasn’t as idyllic as dispersed camping in a forest, it did seem safer.

❄️🎄☕ Scenery Beautiful...
Then here comes some snow! Beauty on another level ☕🎄❄️
That was a beautiful snow. As long as you are able to stay warm I don't think a snow that melts off the next day is bad at all. Just pretty and a bit majestic. Like a gift from heaven. Cheers 🍻
✌🏼☺️
Keep making big mistakes. That was awesome! Beautiful filming. stunning scenery. Love the maps!
You know the videos you make showing the landscape are very useful to people who are planning road trips.
Happy to hear that!
lovely travels, lovely pace. thanks for letting us hear the local sounds - birds, water, wind thru trees, softly lighting snowflakes and town sounds, too
8:00 and that is all the snow you need for it to be really lovely and peaceful. Less snow=good. Snow day 1, melt day 2=the best!
I do also planning for solo car campaign 🤩
Thank you for the inspiration👍
God bless you 🙏
Thanks for taking us along! Idyllwild looks like a great little town.
That's not snow. Lol That's flurries. Beautiful area.
The snow “looked” beautiful. 😉 The desert is a great getaway from the snow, but you do get tired of cactus, dirt and high winds. I’m looking forward to seeing actual grass on the ground, lakes, rivers, trees and beaches.....soon. ✌️
A little snow doth a body good. A lot of snow doth a body even better!
We had snow on the ground most of the winter. We're finally getting some 50 to 60 degree weather here and there. I'm definitely ready for warm weather. The older I get, the less I like winter.
What a lovely mistake!! Absolutely beautiful job with the video!! I really appreciate it.
who are you kidding mr Static?! you've had a brilliant winter! such a change from Seattle. it did sound a little as if you were returning from another planet at one point - "I finally got to see - some trees". lovely footage as usual.
Great views of Cali!
Thank You.
Snow may have been a mistake but what a beautiful one to make. I must take a drive up to Julian while visiting my daughter in September.
At least when its snowing you won't be bothered by ticks when hiking. Up north we have a terrible tick problem 🕷 stay safe and take care....great video !
I just live down the mountain in Hemet, Not quit as picturesque and most of our restaurants are closed to inside dining! Yes I can be down here and see the snow covered mountains! Close enough for me, I was born and raised in Cleveland,Ohio! Just remembering those winters makes me cold!
You’re close enough for a day trip. I’d stay away in the winter, too. Summer trips to Idyllwild were always a favorite to escape the heat.
That sounds like the exact right amount of snow. Thanks for the video.
😂
Thanks for great share and Video! SNOW?? We had ours in PNW, and yes yours for a day was beautiful, if not your cup of tea / coffee :) Enjoy and stay warm! Cheers! :)
Wonderful wonderful video, thank you
A mistake? Maybe, but it was a beautiful one. WOW! What an adventure! 😀
😊✌🏼
Great video. Thank you for sharing your travels.
Still the snow looked very beautiful. Great tour around the country Scott
Thanks Wayne
As you may know, we're in Yucca Valley, just west of Joshua Tree Village. Elevation is 3500' and it snowed here yesterday (Friday, Mar 12) too - although it didn't stick at all and only came down for about an hour. For me, that's perfect. Today is sunny and lovely - cool, but nice.
Snow in Yucca?!? Oh my!
@@StaticCamperVan It's the 3rd time this year. Twice last year but usually only stays a couple of days. This one melted before it hit the ground. One of the things we love about living here is that while pretty mild, we do get an actual winter but can go the rest of our lives without a snow shovel! Summer can get pretty hot but usually not for too long at a time. Plus, you know, a NP for a back yard is a good thing too.
Love Idyllwild and Julian! Great day trips from Long Beach or Pedro. And, unlike you(; we always went for the pie! Great little towns to wander around and get coffee or hot chocolate. The Fall is also a beautiful season to take those drives. Thanks for taking me down memorylane with you. The video of the snow falling was beautiful. Stay well.
I did look for an organic pie. But couldn’t find one so I had to do without. Now I want pie!
@@StaticCamperVanLOL! Pie...the ultimate comfort food...with a cup of hot java, heaven on earth(;
Wow, what a beautiful place, great video
Awesome, video. Ty. 😊
I went to boarding school in Idyllwild in the early 80s, so wild to see it again here! It's not really changed!
You’re right, not much has changed. Hadn’t really realized that. A mountain time capsule!
@@StaticCamperVan there was an amazing ice cream shop downtown, is it still there? I want to say it was around the corner from a hardware store?
Still there.
Really nice visual video. Beautiful and well shot, entertaining video. Good audio as well.
Thanks Sir! I really appreciate your feedback. Unfortunately, I bought the wrong Microphone. UGH.
Beautiful
Such a beautiful area. I would love to travel thru here. Perhaps soon. Thanks again for the tour! P.S. living in Yukon Canada I have to laugh at your complaints of snow.... we have 2 ft and its 0 Farenheit.
Always nice videos Scott.
Really, one of your better videos, keep up the good work. 🤙
Thanks Richard ✌🏼
first I read comments & then I watch the video..I don't want to be surprised:) so judging by the comments here
It will be a pleasure to watch:)
Nice video Scott. Im going to have to head down there. It seems like spring is slow to get here but at least the passes are more open now.
You really should take a trip down. It’s a vanlifers world down here.
That “yellow post” (?) forest site was lovely. What great travels you are having!
Lovely nature , merci beaucoup, thank you!!!🧡🏵️🧡
je vous en prie
@@StaticCamperVan O mais tu parles français? O but your speaking french?😃🧡🏵️🧡
Sorry, you caught me! Not speaking French, using Google Translate 😁

Spent time in Anza Borrego and visited Julian, wonderful experience, thank you for sharing myFriend!
Snow is melting up here in Williamstown, NY. Another inspirational van vid Static 🌲☕️
I still think this is better than 107 degree or ANY muggy day.
Thanks for the hot sauce recommendation , I bought some and it is really good !!
Awesome! So great to hear positive reviews. They are a great company.
2:37.... looks like Banner grade up to Julian !
Such a pleasure to watch this. Well done!
I love Julian and their apple pie! My husband and I spent our honeymoon there in a little cabin 16 years ago. Also, I used to go to Kids' Summer Camp in Idyllwild...ah, great memories! Enjoying your adventures...Safe travels to you!
Awesome video!! Food, coffee, travel, great scenery, hikes. You make me jealous!! Stay safe!
We got snow at 2,000 ft in CA which rarely happens. Beautiful but cold. Thanks for all the info on places to visit.
Beautiful scenery. Well done ! Your videos always make me happy.
Another place I am listing! Thank you. Idyllwild looks like a place I will love. And it’s right on my planned route up northwest. Keep up the great travelogues, it’s always good to see you. ❤️🚙
😊✌🏼
The Trip of all seasons 🤟
Haha, I didn’t want to see Snow!
Avoiding snow is exactly why I’m building my PMC!
Thanks for sharing, always good to see more of the USA.
Just got through the extreme winter weather that came through Texas and Arkansas a week or so ago, so I will pass on the snow lol
No Thank you!
I believe you had some nice shots of manzanita - California's other redwood. I just looked it up and it turns out to have a lot of medicinal uses. My BirdNET app says that bird was a Steller's Jay. Another great video, and more incentive to do a road trip to my original stomping grounds while growing up.
I got snowed on in Idyllwild in May of 2018. Surprise.
No good!
Scott I have had those same experiences at times. I guess that's full-time vanlife and the beauty is, all we need to do is turn the key and move on, we are not stuck. This summer if your still full-timing it think about visiting shadow bay in Oregon in August. It's absolutely beautiful. Safe travels and enjoy your time as being a full-timer.
Never heard of shadow bay. I’ll put it on my list. Thanks!
@@StaticCamperVan it is on Waldo lake
I was expecting it to be on the coast. Haha.
But I’ve saved it anyway. We never know where we’ll end up. ✌🏼
@@StaticCamperVan safe travels Scott, maybe our paths will cross
hey Scott, hope everything is good and you're safe. I hope you don't mind me saying this but the beard makes you look like a prophet or something. Also thanks for the video; I really enjjoyed it.
I hope you're truly having the time of your life and not feeling like you're compromising by living this life style. I'm here in my heated apartment with the thermostat high and eating Haagan Daaz while watching you.
No compromises here. And my heater works really well.
Go in peace.
Thank you for the tips, Static! I have been looking for places to do a long drive next weekend. I think I’ll visit Idyllwild.
Glad you hadn't gone to Colorado!
Looking forward to your video. Thank you! 🥰
Very pretty scenery. Thanks!
Beautiful scenery.
Trees 🌲 and running water!!!! Lovely jubbly 😊😀. Are you sure you’re not a little bit English Mr Static...? A few inches of snow ⛄️ and England grinds to a halt, the BBC hysterically issues ‘weather warnings’, trains can’t run and any true Brit refuses to venture out 😆🤪😩! The Scots can cope with snow, since they get a lot of it...so I’m claiming you for England 🏴...despite your name! 😉
👍🏼
So good, make some more big mistakes will ya.
Ok. But please, no more snow.
Static Campervan? I don't think so! More like "Best of SoCA" these days!:) Lol. You keep reminding me of how much I love SoCA. I used to live a 20 minute drive from Julian (in Ramona) years ago. The winding road drive up to Julian was lovely and I always stopped on the way at that little old yellow house where they sold freshly baked bread and those bars with raisins. I hope you at least got a slice of pie to go in Julian to have with coffee later! Haven't been to Idyllwild in more than a decade. Thanks for sharing your visit. Did you ever head up for the Idyllwild Jazz Festivals?? Always looking forward to your videos...
Yes, California keeps pulling me back!
Never been to the Jazz Fest. I was always working. No pie that I could eat. But my lunch was Very good.
@@StaticCamperVan CA always pulls me back, too. Where else can you enjoy a desert hike, play in the snow in the mountains and go for a walk on the beach all within a cpl hours' drive? There's no place quite like it!
🦋
You make me laugh! I am in panhandle of FL. Lovely temps, beaches, but not a lot of quiet, ha! Worth it for now. No more snow!
Quiet or not, it Sounds awesome!
@@StaticCamperVan it is. I am at Pine Log state park today, there's a classic car show at the beach today. Beautiful cars yet busy.
Nice video. You just subconsciously wanted to go where that beard made sense...😉😁
While its a good beard, it screams seattle (area).. jus sayin'...
I like these type videos the best. btw, you're channel is the only one i have set-up for notifications, don't want to miss one. Thanks.
Thanks Greg✌🏼
🙏
That bird was me a few weeks ago here in ATX!
Beautiful mistake nonetheless in the end 👍🏻
Hi Scott. Your mistake was beauty for my eyes. My mistake was never going to idywillyd while living in So Cal. It’s a must now. Speaking to family they have stated it’s been cold I LA and San Bernardino. Nice going to you old stomping ground right?
👍
✌🏼
Excellent vid Buddy. Great info and shots of your boondocking location. Where exactly is that spot you stayed in Idyllwild? We want to stay there and check out Idyllwild as well.
Also, recommendations on boondocking overnight in Julian?
Thanks, keep up the good work.
It’s about 15 minutes South of Idyllwild. Apple Canyon. It’s near Hurkey Creek Campground. If you search “Yellow Post Camping on Google Maps, you’ll see several in the area. The spots fill up fast so you will want to find one early in the day. Also, some of the sites are better suited for 4 wheel drive. If you have a high clearance off road rig, you will have more options.
I’d be fine with parking in downtown Julian. Otherwise, you might look at camping in Anza-Borrego or the Cleveland National Forest. Depending on which direction you are heading.
@@StaticCamperVan Cool.... U the man ! Thanks, we'll check it out.
well mah e it wasn't at RTER but you did an interview with a nice looking girl at some point because I remember her being cute and very open about what she enjoyed her life in her van
Are you always as chill as you are on your channel? I love snow! But need to insulate my van before I could be in it. Did you use a drone?
I’m only chill when I’m not working a 9 to 5 job!
My van isn’t insulated. But I do have a nice heater. An Olympian Wave 3.
I don’t own a drone. Or a camera.
Beam me some pie Scotty!
I just spent a couple of days & nights at Lake Morena County Park in Campo, California. It was beautiful & there's a malt shop nearby. I Loved it. Have you been there? I paid $29 per night for partial hook-ups. I am more in San Diego now & I have not a clue as to where I will spend the night.
Never been to Campo. Glad you liked it.
Do you have an RV? I guess I didn’t realize that. Finding a spot to park in SD in an RV can be tricky. Sorry I don’t have any suggestions for you.
@@StaticCamperVan No. I have a minivan. Lake Morena is near Cleveland National Forest. The park rangers were phenomenal too it only snowed a little when I was there.
Good to hear. You should be able to park anywhere you want. SD does have an ordinance against sleeping in a vehicle. They enforce it mostly in upscale neighborhoods, even though they have been ordered by the Federal government to stop doing so.
Like I mentioned before, I didn’t have any trouble, and I only parked in very upscale neighborhoods. Those of us in minivans can pretty much park anywhere.
Thank You Static Camper. I had someone offer to help me get an RV or trailer & I was like no Thank You! I know a lady who has a casita & she has business in Ventura soon. She is at a loss as to what to do with it while she's there. She says they frown on people bringing them there & she can't leave it at the LTVA where she is now.
Let it snow; let it snow; let it... Um, what, actually, is snow? Can you make coffee out of it?
Sadly, no.
👍👍🌟🌟🌟🌟👍👍
Hmmm, I didn't see a mistake at all!
👍😉🇨🇦🌲
as I reviewed my last comment I saw just how bad my ability to spell and write. I guess it wasn't RTR but it was a cute female in a van and you both were enjoying each other's company.
Oh, I see. No we are just friends.
ha! What are the odds?
Hey Scott..I was very near Julian a couple of years ago when I was driving up to Borrego Springs. Started in Yuma and took 8 West..then some 2 laner North. Where I split off to Borrego Springs if I'd gone left instead of right..I'd have seen Julian. Now I know..so next time I'll check it out 👍 Even with a bit of snow..that was a beautiful area !
Morning, Static.
Was wondering what new microphone do you have?
Blue Yeti
did you ever become more than friends with the woman you interviewed at the RTR?
I think the only interview I did at the RTR was Dave 2D. So, no! Haha
I'm from Memphis, TN area. I think we just all needed a bit of snow this year, if we wanted it or not.
Also there is a Ronald Tate making a comments that is pornographic. I tried to report him but it would not let me. Thought u should know.
Thanks. I think I was able to deleted that comment.
