  • "In my 20-plus hours with the 1.0 release of horror western FPS Blood West, I endured what can only be described as a bell curve of fun. My first hour as the game's nameless undead gunslinger of a protagonist was about as much fun as being born..."

    Hello! I got a chance to finish up Blood West this morning-the final boss was surprisingly easy. For those curious, there's no New Game + or option to continue your adventure, though there is a pretty rad animated outro song performed by Ghoultown. Let me know if you have any other questions about the game, and thanks for watching :)

    I'm glad you liked the Voice Acting of the game if nothing else - and I'm specifically happy you chose one of my characters (Skeletal Undead - Mr. Bones) to showcase it.
    Fair critique. I still hope you managed to enjoy yourself.
    Thanks for the vid!

    Naa, its not a immersive sim.
    A immersive sim allows all styles of play.
    This only allows stealth until like half way through.
    Its just a weird combo.

    • @MEGAthemicro

      Here's how it was marketed in the announcement email I received from the devs:
      "It’s been a while since the last Thief and Dishonored games, and the team at Hyperstrange knows the hunger for that kind of engaging stealth, immersive sim, dark adventure. Luckily, Blood West is here, and even the legendary Stephen L. Russell is onboard with his iconic voice!"
      Definitely was intended to be an immersive sim, even brining back the most famous genre voice actor. Whether or not it achieves its vision, however, is another question.

    Mega bringing the tough (but fair) love. that gave me Darkwatch nostalgia (sortof). :) I think the key w/story driven FPS games is that it's ok to be short, don't recycle anything or try to stretch it. I'd much rather have an all killer campaign that takes a handful of hours and is replayable for it's high fun factor (many good examples of that kind of bangin short shooter during the 360/ps3 era), rather than something that ends up dragging out of necessity to be longer and won't get replayed for that reason.

    • @MEGAthemicro
      @MEGAthemicro  8 месяцев назад +1

      Great comment! I completely agree re: keeping story-driven FPS games short and sweet. Bulletstorm immediately jumps to my mind as a universally beloved story shooter that was on the short side (~7 hours). We've all been conditioned to think that more content = more value, but Blood West is evidence that that's not always 100% true.

    • @RWScott986

      @@MEGAthemicro yeah Bulletstorm was a blast. :) Singularity comes to mind, too. And Advanced Warfighter 2... replayed them plenty of times.

    The problem i have with the game is that every road lead to Skyrim stealth archer, it works so dam well. Im playing a immersive western shooter.

    People always seem to omit the important design genius of the game and the hindering systems they entirely avoided:
    - No difficulty settings (This is a massive plus, a player should never be put on the spot to select how scaling is going to function based on nothing but guessing)
    - No game saves (This is a yet another genius as it uses a fantastic respawn mechanic that punishes mistakes. A player should never be thinking about artificially "saving" their progress and taking themselves out of the game world to do so)
    - No hand holding (Instead of massacring your screen with UI and pinpointers, the developer lets you explore a hefty hand crafted map at your own pace, your own way, at your own choice of sequence.
    - There is ZERO bullet sponging involved. (A lot of games of similar genre abuse this mechanic heavily, especially when they jam 300 pointless difficulties in the game and it NEVER works)
    - Oh, and I almost forgot to mention. This is a stealth based game WITHOUT X RAY VISION. Imagine that! In 2023 we get to actually sneak around corners without knowing what's behind them before peeking. Who would have thought it possible?

      The swamps SUCK... until you get the lay of the land. I ended up having a lot of fun in Chapter Two because IMO the swamps have more depth to them than any map. The underground cave system, for example, just goes on forever and gets pretty creepy in a good way.

    That is game journalist tier strategy!😂

    🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
    Never once crossed my mind!
    I hate to sound elitist, but click heads or die trying. This game is misleading from the tag "horror" I keep seeing thrown around. It's more a thriller action rpg than a horror anything. I would love for the audio bar to be different or more detailed, but tbh stealth is a sideshow just for thinning out the herd. You can even bypass stealth when you get the right guns and perks. At the end of the day it's a western themed shooting gallery, where most of the time the targets don't give much fight back, but it's fun shooting gallery once you get yourself set up with your favorite weapon of choice.

    • @MEGAthemicro
      @MEGAthemicro  8 месяцев назад

      Hey, I was desperate and ammo poor in the beginning! Don't shame my cowardly survival instincts! 😂
      But you're right about it turning into a shooting gallery in the later stages-by Chapter Three I was stacked and strong enough to almost outright ignore stealth with impunity... but I also had less fun as a consequence, because mandatory stealth in Chapter One added so much tension to my experience.

    Uuh I could get this for about 15e If I buy it in a pack with game I happen to own. I am really picky about fps games since because of injury I cant use mose and keyboard anymore. Since I play fps if possible with controller they need to be bloody good for me to invest in. I for example was deeply dissapointed when I played remnant 2 and the first major boss was pixel shoting multiple enemies that shoot projectiles. I know it would be fun and interesting boss with mouse and keyboard but at second hardest difficulty very bad experience with mouse and keyboard. It does not help that my ego rarely lets me play games with easy modes etc. They just dont give me dopamine to be fun. Annoying to be like this but what can you do. I hope similiar game gloomwood is more about immersive sim mechanics because I really much enjoyed deus ex games with conroller. I just build my character to not really relay too much on the shooting.

    • @MEGAthemicro
      @MEGAthemicro  8 месяцев назад +1

      I'm sorry to hear about your injury :( I spent a couple hours testing Blood West on controller and had a rough time with it. Because it's such a headshot-dependent combat system and there's no aim assist option, I found that I couldn't be precise enough with controller to advance the game. It plays well on mouse/keyboard, however.

  • @SimplexPL

    This game is hardly an immersive sim - there are no emergent systems, you cannot even move/stack or destroy boxes to open new pathways, even explosive barrels are a no-show - the environment is 100% static and cannot be interacted with.

    • @MEGAthemicro
      @MEGAthemicro  4 месяца назад +1

      Agreed, there's nowhere near the necessary amount of environmental interaction needed to consider Blood West a true immersive sim. Hardcore/old school FPS sounds more accurate.

      If you enjoy slow-burn stealth FPS games, especially those with an old school vibe, I can't imagine you not enjoying Blood West on the whole. That said, it's pretty damn difficult and a bit grindy, especially toward the end. Still, it's very reasonably priced for the amount of content here.

    your gameplay for the first minute seems like you dont have a lot of experience in shooters, just saying that clearly dont mean anything else by it. But if you suck at shooters, then you suck at shooters.

    • @MEGAthemicro
      @MEGAthemicro  8 месяцев назад

      I'll be the first to admit I am much better at almost every other genre lol. That said, the first few hours of Blood West were played on a controller, and after that went horribly south, I restated the game and switched to mouse/keyboard. Headshots galore :)

    Making the cost for dying be more than time wasted with a perm debuff means a NO buy since it is a stupidly made game then.

    • @Wild_Dice
      @Wild_Dice 8 месяцев назад +5

      Just drink a damn purple revival dude; or hold a gold coin trinket. The perma debuffs aren't really that big of a deal, because one prevents, the other clenses all of them.

    • @MEGAthemicro
      @MEGAthemicro  8 месяцев назад +1

      @Wild_Dice - Perma debuffs aren't a big deal after the first few hours once you've gathered enjoy gold to buy purple potions without going bankrupt, but debuffs can completely derail a beginner's experience if you're not expecting them. Overall, I think the mechanic is a net negative because it discourages early game experimentation and forces players to play the game a certain way-the opposite intent of most immersive sims.

      It's better than most games where dying is trivial. You can expend resources to counteract it or roll with it. Death has consequences, which is good. I could argue younare the stupid one for making a silly point like this.
