    This is spot on. A question I often see asked in forums by new players or people looking to buy the game is, "what is the best ship?" The correct answer to that question is, "what do you want to do with it?". In Star Citizen, ships tend to be specialized and the true multiroles are average at what they do. For example, if you want a starter package and you're debating whether to get the cutter or the avenger titan (both are the recommended mid level starters), the cutter has a larger cargo bay that will fit one of a few small ground vehicles and has a lot of hit points, but very weak weapons. On the other hand, the titan can kindof-sortof fit the smallest hoverbike and has average hit points, but a lot of firepower for a ship its size. Also, if you're willing to look past specs and fly something that looks good to you, there are a lot to choose from. The Origin ships are luxurious, all shiny chrome and white paint, while Aegis, Anvil and RSI are more Star Trek Federation (Anvil more military, RSI more civilian and Aegis in between) and Drake ships are best described as Soviet punk - all exposed pipes and wiring, no-nonsense design. Can you spot the Origin, RSI and Drake ships in this video?

    I think it's worth mentioning ship renting in-game too. I didn't know about it for my first couple weeks, and never really checked it. I was already browsing the pledge store, when someone mentioned it to me that I can try out a lot of ships in game for not much in-game currency. So far, I still haven't swapped out/upgraded my lovely flying brick Aurora, but I've flown a lot of significantly more expensive starter ships. It's a great system I think

    I got the Nomad Packages arround Christmas with the holliday special ( So yeah i play for a month now ) and didn't regret it. I looked at all of the ships and decided for the Nomad because of a few reasons:
    1: Its pretty tanky 3x S1 shields. I simply like that because espacially in the beginning if you try out first bountys its pretty usefull to be protected. Ofc doing bountys is not the main purpose of this ship but it can still do stuff.
    2: Its future proof with a bed, toilet etc so i can stay somewhere for longer periods of time later aswell.
    3: The Hover landing gear felt very beginner friendly to me especially on Tougher terrain.
    4: It can be used to go for small cargo runs to make money without having to go FPS or Ship PVE.
    5: It can fit a ROC. This was very important to me after reading a bit about how to make money. I don't have to rely on renting a ship and its also very easy to get the roc in and out of the ship and we all know that ROC farming is a pretty decent money maker especially in the beginning.
    Now a lot of people dont like the look of the Nomad but honestly.. I actually quite like how it looks.
    But sadly without the special it is very expensive and i dont think i wouldve bought it for the current Package price.

    • @wafflesinsanity
      @wafflesinsanity Год назад

      Agreed on the price. It seems really high TBH, but as you said, its hard to beat the utility.
      Other things you can add to your list:
      It has weapon racks right next to the door as you climb on the ladder (a ton of people miss that) for bunkers.
      You can fit boxes and a vehicle like the STV or Cyclone in the back, perfect for bunkers with turrets.
      It fits in the hangar of the 890j (perfect for loading bodies... Er... I mean... "Cargo" after slaughtering the NPC raiders during the Boarding Action In Progress mission.
      You can swap the weapons to ballistics and do some REALLY good damage (I run 2 Mantis and a laser repeater on the nose. Its pretty nasty) since the all laser set up is awful for its capacitor

    You know, I like the Mustang Alpha over the Aurora MR now. Because they added the little cargo box in the Mustang; you can now to box missions now. The Mustang seems to be much more fun to fly, and the boxes still rattle around in the Aurora MR's cabin area.
    In fact, if I was able to get ALL my money back and start over, I would pick the Mustang Alpha and then work to get everything else in-game. It's that good.
    But then again, the Nomad as pretty awesome too. So might just start with that right away anyway.

    I really like the Cutter as a nice, versatile little runabout and when they mentioned they just used the Vulture's engines on it it got me thinking of a possible competitor that could be created quite easily with existing assets. CIG should take the Hull A, remove the spindle and back section, add the MISC Reliant engines to the side, and for the back have a 1 deep, 2 wide, and 2 high cargo area with a ramp that closes off the section where the spindle used to be. It would create a MISC competitor to the Cutter with similar specs.

      Oh interesting! Although I suppose the Reliant series are sort-of competitors

    • @deanclark8783
      @deanclark8783 Год назад

      @@Farrister Yes, when it came to me my first thought was of the existence of the Reliant series, but going over the ship prices and their capabilities I think a Cutter competitor would still work. The Reliant Kore is $20 more expensive and has much more firepower than a Hull A or Cutter, so at worst I think it's like an Origin 100i vs 300i situation. The uniqueness of the Reliant also sets it apart from a basic ship like the Cutter; someone interested in the Reliant probably won't be interested in a basic design using the Hull A fuselage. The in-game promotion of it could literally be from the perspective of using off the shelf parts to create a small, inexpensive runabout, with the MISC CEO saying the Cutter is an excellent idea and by scaling up the production of the Hull A fuselage to make two ships with it they could compete with the Cutter on price and buyers will know that with many interchangeable parts between the MISC ships it will be less expensive to repair and maintain.

    My list:
    - Uncertain player starter ship: Wait until a free-fly event and use whatever they offer.
    - Poor man starter ship: Cutter, but eventually upgrade it to a Cutlass Black. DO NOT buy anything cheaper, they will frustrate you.
    - Rich man starter ship: Cutlass Black. Keep it forever.
    - Pleasant starter ship you keep forever: Pisces C8R (Red/Medical).
    - Earn aEUC fast after a wipe starter ship: Prospector.
    IDEAL alternative:
    - If there is a cheap ship with LTI (life-time-insurance) buy it, then a few days later trade it in for your desired ship (no money lost and the LTI carries to the new ship). These are usually only availailable during special events. But if you tested the game during a free fly event... there might be one of these available.
    There are many reasons for those, and many ships you will do well to buy with aUEC. But the above list is the quick and easy.

  • @manualmonster
    @manualmonster Год назад +2

    Another thing to consider for your starter ship is how you're going to use it after you've upgraded to something else. Most of the offerings on this list are going to gather dust in your hangar.
    The Arrow is an exception. It's a fantastic fighter that stays competitive whenever you want to come back to it.
    The Nomad is not on this list, but often appears in starter packs. It has a unique exterior cargo bay that can move small ground vehicles and a respectable amount of cargo for a ship of its size.
    The Cutty Black is extremely versatile. If you upgrade to something specialized, you can always come back to the Cutty when you need to do something your new ship can't do.

    • @CapnSnackbeard
      @CapnSnackbeard Год назад +2

      I have to disagree about the Arrow. Single seat fighters make very limited starter ships and a ship like the arrow will only become less useful as time wears on and the game gets bigger and more complex. Something like the Titan will remain useful. It has an instant claim time, an interior, and a bed and is good for almost any starter mission. The Arrow will be good at short range dogfighting other light fighters. That's about it.

    • @manualmonster
      @manualmonster Год назад

      @@CapnSnackbeard I have to admit, light fighters aren't really my thing. I'm mostly parroting what I've seen on the RSI forums and here on RUclips. Well thats easy to answer.
      The Cutter (or Cutlet) is basicly the little sister of the Cutty. It incorporates everything thats great about all the other starters into one tiny rather cheap package.
      You get a full size cargobay that can hold a vehicle for less than the prize of a titan.
      You get full size living quaters with bed toilet and shower. None of the starters around its pricepoint have that. Mustang Alpha and Pisces have nothing, Aurora and Titan have a bed, 300 series and Nomad get a bed and toilet, Cutty Black only has beds.
      You also get a lockable cockpit door so you can transport folks without the risk of getting shot, a gunrack for 2 sidearms 1 rifle and 1 railgun/missile launcher, internally accessable components.
      The Cutlet is basicly this "Van Life" kind of ship. Pack enough supplies and you can stay in bumfuck nowhere as long as you like. You could travel the universe without ever visiting a landingzone provided you find some kind of tanker that can refuel you and traveling folks that will sell you food and water.
      Wanna get some fresh air? Land whereever you like, grab the bike you stored in the cargobay and head out. Your tiny house will be waiting for you when you come back.
      Some folks wanna bother you? The size 2 guns and decent armor will provide enough cover for you to spool your quantum drive and get out.

"hauling" really well in the right circumstances, has great firepower if you choose an appropriate loadout, along with a wonderful interior. Despite effectively being a pickup truck, it flys like a dream as well. I am hard pressed to ever see another "starter" as the same value, and after the Cutter changes back in 3.16, I cannot suggest that paper thin ship.

    The description of the Cutter in this video might be misleading to new backers, as it implies that it has superior firepower and flight performance to the Aurora… it doesn’t. It’s also implied that the Cutter and Avenger are equivalent in that regard when they’re totally not.

      Depends what you call superior firepower.
      The Cutter can fit Size 2s, the Aurora cant. And sooner or later in the games developement those 4 Size 1s on the Aurora might not be enough to punch a hole into another ship but the Cutters 2 Size 2s might just be enough.
      And comparing the Cutter and the Titan isnt that bad honestly.
      The Titan is for someone who wants to do combat, while the Cutter is the ship for the person who wants to travel and live in the Verse.

      Future hypothetical gameplay changes that may be years down the line don't excuse giving misleading information to new players trying to purchase a starter ship here and now. The Aurora's 4 size 1 guns have more DPS than the Cutters pair of size 2s.
      Also, he didn't compare the Avenger and the Cutter in terms of amenities, the phrasing of the video made it sound like they had comparable weaponry and flight performance. The Avenger is inarguably superior in those regards.

    Imo the mustang alpha is the best starter ship it's cheap,
    the cargo container is more stable than the arouras stacking off boxes,
    its a good combat ship and it can hold its own in pvp with some practice
    + it flies really well.

    my own 2cents: the Mustang i think edges out the Aurora a bit i think, with the now functional "cargo bay", and the fact that it comes stcok with 2 Size 2 guns, and can mount 2 more size 1, means that for learning "the basics of combat", the Mustang is gonna provide a bit easier learning curve over the Aurora, even if it doesnt have missile launch capability

    You forgot to mention that the Anvil C8X Pisces now has a starter pack - with the limited edition Red Festival edition on discount for US$51 this week. The Cutter has some small 'teething' issues (slow atmospheric speed) which will be fixed in 3.18, but the Anvil C8X is a fast little ship for deliveries, bunkers and daily driving, and seats three.
    I started a year ago with the Titan starter, but have switched to a C8X, though I also own a C8 that came with my Carrack, and a C8R, which I use more far often than my Cutter!

    Those considering a purchase should understand the $45 options do NOT include Squadron 42; such packages start at $20 more. (Adding it on later to any package is $45 so bundling it in is a significant savings) I got my pledge package 10 years ago for $40 and it included Squadron 42 back then. Also, right now a C8X Pisces starter option is on sale for $51 which may be a good deal for some. Four years ago I added an Aurora ES for $20 (looking for that utter bare bones starting vibe) and an Avenger Titan for $50. Were I just starting out today there is no question I would get a $65 "full" MR package and do EVERYTHING else in game only.

    As always, great video. Many may not like the look (I love it), but the Drake cutter is the best starter ship followed by the avenger. They are both great. The RSI Aurora is also fantastic. I will say for bigger ships learn what LTI insurance is, yea it doesn’t matter now, but doesn’t mean it won’t later, and rather just have LTI (life time insurance) tokens upfront, my starter package ship is the only one with a insurance plan, but all my ships after are LTI so I don’t have to worry about it down the road. Also Cutter is the best starter in my opinion, that or Cutlass Black if you have the extra funds. Well rounded ship.
    I own a Carrack, Polaris (not in game yet) but it’s a capital ship, a hammerhead, Redeemer, Reclaimer, Mercury Star runner, Mole, Prospector, vulture, cutty red, cutty black, C2 cargo runner, eclipse, gladius, avenger titan, cutter, and you want to know the irony? I own some big ships but I find myself flying the cutter or Cutty black the most. Cutter is a great bang for your buck.
    Will also say this channel helped me pick what I wanted, I wanted to be well rounded. Able to make money with friends or solo but being able to fight if needed. Like he says, DONT GO BUY EVERYTHING LIKE I DID, I knew I loved this game, but you may not, you don’t have to own what I do.
