  • Hong Kong is a world famous trading city in the south of China, technically part of China but also not, depending on how you look at it. This former British colony is famously one of the world's most futuristic cities, and is virtually the definition of the term "urban".

    A couple corrections for errors that have been so far pointed out in the comments:
    2:14 Actually, that was proposed legislation that was protested against a few years ago, not necessarily the status quo
    2:33 The Yuan RMB actually hasn't been pegged to the USD since 2005, though the HKD still is

      3:05 a note from a Hongkonger
      people will give you weird looks if you speak Mandarin, for err ... reasons best not explained at this instant, from personal experience, more people know better English than Mandarin anyways (atleast the people I'm with, most of whom barely know Mandarin, I don't know it at all)

    • @1224chrisng
      @1224chrisng 5 лет назад

      (if you want to know why people will give you weird looks if you speak Mandarin, you don't know what kind of rabbit hole you're getting into, but this is it)
      basically, among the Hongkongers, the Mainlanders gained a reputation of jumping queues, public urination, and causing massive price hikes in baby's formula by buying tons of it and selling it in the Mainland, combined that with the resentment towards China in general, and you might get in trouble speaking Mandarin
      (ps Thatcher sold us out and "Winnie the Pooh" is a genocidal maniac who spies on people with technology and reads Nineteen-Eightyfour like an instruction manual, don't @ me)

    Awesome video mate, except for that dim sum chump at the beginning. I first visited HK and Macau as a kid in 1997, just before handover. It was a huge story back home and dominated current affairs in HK. I remember Chris Patten's tearful farewell. Even as a youngster I recall thinking this was a key moment in the UK becoming less relevant, the last vestiges of a colonial past, and Asia rising.

    Yay, a video about my home country! A few things though:
    2:17 This is not true. What you described is the *proposed* electoral reform by the PRC government that sparked the Umbrella Revolution, and the whole bill was rejected in our Legislative Council in the end (it was a bit of a funny story but I won't get into it). The current system Hong Kong elects the Chief Executive (head of government) is by a 1200-member Election Committee, the members of which are in turn elected only by certain sectors and special interest groups. The current Chief Executive Carrie Lam was elected with 777 votes.
    4:33 Not really an inaccuracy per se, but I want to add that Macau has been in de facto control by the PRC since 1966 after the leftist riot. The Macanese colonial government at the time agreed to China's demands and basically handed over control. The leftists in Hong Kong got inspired by this and tried the same thing in 1967 but failed. This is why people from Macau are much more pro-China than those in Hong Kong.
    Great video!
