The mass introduction of opium from the British East India Company (BEIC) was illegal according to Qing law, but was still accepted by Chinese merchants due to it being a lucrative trade product despite it being an illicit and illegal drug. The thing about BEIC opium was that it was better quality than domestic versions and became highly prized. Future British prime minister William Gladstone criticised this move in parliament, but the british went with it anyway. What the brits did then was repulsive.
Fun fact: the Chinese didn’t burn the opium since even if it’s burnt it is still usable because you need to light it on fire to use it So they dump them into the sea
Funny how the history of Hong Kong is simplified to “Brits took over and Hong Kong the fishing village had education, housing, development… etc” Much of the glumly history of British rule is just ignored. Hong Kong people only started to have those rights after a leftist rebellion in the late 60’s. The video seems to convey the Brits did everything from ground up, there was nothing beforehand, and nothing came from China. Why didn’t the video mention after the sino-British agreement that the British government began to privatise all public services, began the high land-prices policy, and implemented sudden and hasty measures of democratisations. All these factors directly contributed to the current mess in HK. So biased and ill-informed.
Yes its extremely basised.... they allowed international travel, converted it from a fishing port infested with pirates to transform what it is today the pearl of the orient. The situation with the Royal Saxon is interesting. So when China forbade the trade of Opium, Charles Elliot decided to issue a sanction. Some British ships can still trade provided it's not opium such as the Quaker owned Thomas Coutts. This forced Charles Elliot to issue a blockade. In 1839, the Royal Saxon tried to slip through because it felt the blockade is an infringement on free trade which led to the British ships firing a warning shot. This forced Admiral Guan Tianpei of the Chinese Navy to send ships to protect the Royal Saxon as that British merchant ship was legally trading with the Chinese. This is what led to the startup of the First Opium War: the Chinese Navy trying to protect a law abiding British merchant ship which managed to slip past unscathed, conducted its trade, and left
