@Autor: Central America includes Méjico ignorants, it is bathed by the Caribbean Sea, only a small part is in the north, the paralel 30 is the same limit at its north frontier in the middle and the north limit of the Caribbean and the Nazca plate in the west starts and ends in Méjico, so if Cuba is Central, Méjico too.
More data: America is not a country it is a continent, one continent (north and south are cardinal points).
There was the odd case of Chiapas, the only Central American region that decided to stay with Mexico.
The department of El Petén in Guatemala could also be Mexican, but the Mexican government in those years rejected the proposal for that territory for reasons that I don't remember and had to stay with Guatemala since they could not progress on their own since they did not have a maritime coast.
Honestly, Mexico would look more attractive on the map, in addition to probably taking better advantage of the resources of that territory that unfortunately Guatemala has not been able to rescue.
Chiapas has had history of ceding from Mexico multiple times before to become independent. Mexico has had wars against Chiapas every century it seems.
@@Trancymind honestly Chiapas is only like that because of the indigenous population and if the Chiapan population were to be mestizo and white it would probably be safer

@@Robespierre-lIconsidering our nations' histories with dictatorships, foreign interference, crime, and corruption, it's a miracle our governments even pretend to be democratic. Every country has its issues, and while we have common challenges and goals, there is no guarantee that "unity" won't just mean a larger sized dictatorship, oligarchy, or narcostate. And this doesn't even touch the subject of land distribution and disparities of power between the different nations. Nicaragua is anti democratic so there goes another nation out of the picture. Guatemala is very corrupted and with a poor infrastructure and school as well. Belize is the most alien country of all Central America due to a different culture as a former british colony. Honduras has so many issues right now that it is leaning strongly to China just like Nicaragua. El Salvador is doing their own thing in their own way in a more modernized mindset on how to govern itself in order to prosper without destroying the environment of their country.

Fun fact, of the 5 original countries, Costa Rica has always been the odd one out.
The Flag, the lack of a dictatorship/civil war in the cold war and its relative stability kind of confuses the other countries Since it was the least populus of the 5 and with the fewest resources.

In the early twentieth century, Costa Rica abolished their army and created a constitution that put peace first before anything. A group of university students even successfully sued the government after their declared support of Bush’s invasion of Iraq because it went against the constitution.

You got me with the Colombia/France comparison before I realized that was just French Guiana, not European France.
Then I looked up their sizes and Colombia is still TWICE the size of France! Sacre bleu!
Colombia is a bigger than any European country but only Russia
I just realized it aswell,God damn some countries are alot bigger than the map would have you believe, though the upside is that not all of Colombia is hospitable land, they have alot of desert and very mountainous territory which isnt all that useful. 1000 km of steppe or forest is better than 100 000 km of desert.
Countries in the new world are huge and we don't even notice since they are:
1: Far away from european and asian countries so you can't dimension them properly
2: Close to Canada, America, Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, which makes them seem a lot smaller.
New Zealand has this same perception hole, it's much bigger than people generally eyeball it to be.
As a Colombian i can confirm.
Our country is huge but when you consider our geography there are big caveats like...
The Andes cuts our country in half but still manages to cover a big part of our territory.
Considering major populated cities developed in the center of the countrty between the mountains it made road connection to the coast and neighbouring countries harder and in the case of Panama impossible.
The southeast of the country is basically just rainforest with no major urban areas and most towns being so disconnected the only way to get to them is by plane or maybe using some river.
Fun fact tho, given our mountain terrain, Colombia produced the first latino-american to win the Tour de France and the Giro d'Itali.
people often overlook the fact that Colombia is the second most populous nation in south america, and the second most populous spanish speaking nation in the world
I love seeing many Salvadorans here! As one as well (who was born in the US) I love videos like this cuz it helps me learn more about this wonderful region! Thanks for making a video like this!
It'd be great if all of you proud ethnics would leave the United States and go back to your motherlands of which you are so proud. Why boast about it from afar while living in a completely different nation? I've never understood this and many REAL Americans(people whose families actually have centuries old history here and didn't just jump off a boat or run across the border in the past few decades) don't understand it either.
Something that drives a giant wedge against complete Central American integration is the huge difference in income and human development between Costa Rica and Panama and the other Central American countries. Costa Rica and Panama have a GDP per capita of 13K and 17K respectively while Nicaragua and Honduras have a GDP per capita of 2K and 3K.
The problem is that Costa Rica has had some questionable germanic migration around 1945, which they like to boast about.
@@glasseyes5844 Really, I'm costarican and didn't know that😒.
We did got a lot of German migrations but that is just a racist statement. As a fellow centroamerican mentioned, Guatemala got even more Germans. The difference between Costa Rica and Central America is that we had a socialist government in the 1949 that wasn’t taken down by the US. The rest of CA also tried and they got a fascist dictatorship by the US. That’s the main difference
But imagine what could happen if they got past that fact and unified? Yes things won’t be easy in the beginning, but you have to go through the struggle to get to the brighter side.

What I got from this video is that Central America was basically Yugoslavia, minus the very bloody wars when it dissolved.
Yugoslavia also seemed like a good idea on paper... just the 1000's of years of history made unification a tad ugly.
Central America has a lot less history to worry about.
No, its not yugoslavia at all. Bad comparison. All central americans speak the same language and are christians. Yugoslavia on the other hand has islam, and christians, and other languages.
Nah bro, it really is similar you just wanna cry about it for some reason.
1st: pretty much the same language.
2nd:a couple of rich countries, a populated one and an unstable one.
3rd: Slight differences among them.
Sure, I agree it's definitely easier to unify Central America thn Yugoslavia, but the comparison makes sense.
No. Unlike Yugoslavia, we are all literally the exact same genetically. We speak with identical accents. I think a Nicaraguan peasant and a Nicaraguan bus driver are more different from each other than a Salvadorian bus driver and a Nicaraguan bus driver. That's to say, we are one people, separated into 5 countries for the sake of keeping us poor and desperate
@@planescapedWhat Yugoslavia went through is nothing compared to what Central America went through. Religion wasn't a big issue nor race ideology in Central America. Also central americans as people get along pretty well like good neighbors.
Interesting, thank you. I don’t know much about Central America. Maybe more in the future?
Check out stuff on the banana wars if you want to know what happened next.
So as you mentioned, the Central American flags today have similar colors and style to the Federal Republic/United Provinces of Central America flag, but why did the Federal Republic/United Provinces of Central America flag choose that style in the first place? The hint is in its original name, United Provinces. The United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, the predecessor of Argentina. A French guy named Hipólito Bouchard, who was serving under the Argentine Navy, raided the Spanish outposts located there during the Argentine war for Independence and the people would see that flag and view it as their liberated flag, so they took it as an inspiration.
The man even raided Spanish settlements in California! Like in Monterey, what was at the time the capital of Alta California. After an attack on the fort there failed on the night of November 23rd, 1818, they made it on land the next day and the Spanish forces were no match. For five days, an Argentine flag was raised over Monterey. He was killed by one of his servants in 1837 in Peru.
Well the white color represents the land, and the blue reperesents the two oceans, while the army shield has 5 volcanos that represents the five provinces, and is also a reference of the many volcanos in the region.
"but all that changed when the French nation attacked." 😂
The moment I heard that I was like “Oh my god” 😆
Whom and when did France attack?
Only the Bolivar, out of all four viceroyalties can stop them but when Latin America needed him most, he died...
I've met an Honduran that likes the idea of a Union but also a Salvadoran that completely opposes it. Me personally I see a great opportunity for development in the area and an expansion of the criminal crackdown going on in El Salvador to rid the area of violent crime and also the end of the dictatorship in Nicaragua. Though definitely by far the biggest complaints come from Costa Rica since they're the country that is most well off and would have to share its wealth to the less developed parts.
In order to develop further they'd have to appeal to their neighbors and to the world as an up and coming regional power
Coming from the Caribbean this reminds me of an idea to unite the Antilles into a union
¡Viva Morazán!
If Nicaragua is a dictatorship, I don't even wanna know what the rest of Centroamérica is. I do agree that it should unify or at least those countries should work more together
The criminal carckdown in El Salvador came at the expense of democracy, individual freedoms and the Institutions of the State. That's something a country like Costa Rica will never accept.
El Salvador only upped its safety by throwing human rights to the wayside in the process. Not sure others would be down to do the same.
@@pedrosampaio7349The rest are republics. Nicaragua is a dictatorship with left leanings tendencies.

I think there are some missunderstandings regarding the borders with mexico. The state of chiapas was originally part of the federation, after they joined mexico, they decided to stay there and not secede. All exept the south or the Soconusco region. Los altos was a region located in the now country of Guatemala with the capital in Quetzaltenango.
Los altos became a state, it qas granted statehood while the Federal Republic existed.
@@lucario2188 Yes, it became a state but its territory was mainly in todays Guatemala. Territories like the north (Peten) were also kinda disputed, as it was the full length of Belize (thats why there is still a conflict today). Also, there was the Miskito kingdom as well. All the borders at that time were quite volatile.
The Los Altos part is very interesting. Los Altos existed within the Federal Republic of Central America as its sixth state separate from Guatemala from 1838 to 1840, and then a short-lived independent republic from 1848 to 1849. While you're right a part of it is within Mexico's Chiapas, part is also still within Guatemala. The state originated from the political differences and tensions between Guatemala City on one side, and Quetzaltenango and other parts of western Central America on the other. Los Altos was also the most productive region with most economic activity within Guatemala. So without Los Altos, Guatemala knew they'd lose many benefits that held their hegemony.
As the Federation crumbled into civil war due to the influence of the Guatemalan conservatives and the regular clergy, Los Altos declared itself an independent republic. The independence of Los Altos from Guatemala was officially proclaimed in February 1838, but Guatemala got its revenge. In April 1838, they sent Rafael Carrera to subdue them. In March 1840, liberal caudillo Francisco Morazán invaded Guatemala with 1,500 soldiers to avenge what happened in Los Altos and fearing that such action would end liberal efforts to hold together the federation. Carrea hatched a strategic plan that defeated Francisco, and he took it on Los Altos by having their liberal officials shot and forcibly annexed into Guatemala
I've seen you so much in comment sections lol

El Salvador is like a honey badger, it is the smallest but also the courageous one who loves to rebel against bigger opponents. Costa Rica is the sloth, who doesn't like to say anything nor fight. I'm Salvadoran, and to be honest I don't think even Central Americans quite understands how CA-4 border control works. When I lived in El Salvador, I used to travel to Guatemala quite often as I have relatives there. Some years I would be able to go through by only stopping and showing my ID card without even leaving my car. Sometimes I'd have to get off my car and make a line, but still show only my ID card. Other times I had to show specifically my passport.
I never really bothered to learn what caused all this variation but I can imagine it being slightly troublesome for tourists travelling by land that do not speak the language.
Also, having to exchange money in every single country makes it infinitely less convenient than travelling in Europe. I know Schengen and the Eurozone are not the same thing, but you really do need both for that amazing seamless travel experience.

Somethings to correct...
1. In the maps you don't include Belize in the territory of the Central America Republic and the Viceroyalty of New Spain which should be included since Belize was a Illegal British settlement just as the Misquito Protectorate and the Bay Islands... Belize was legitimized later and the Misquito Protectorate and the Bay Islands where given back to Honduras and Nicaragua when they where supposed to be annexed to the USA.
2. The Captaincy of Guatemala was granted independance in the treaty of Iguala signed by the last Viceroy O'donojú. It is just the the Guatemalan elite wanted to take advantage of the situation and decided to distance themselfs from the Government in Mexico until Agustin de Iturbide forced them to unite to the Empire in favor of what most of Central America wanted.
Aside from that good video. Thanks for covering this wonderful and interesting region. With a really short video which I know was done to your best ability.
El Salvador was the only country/province in Central America that didn't want to be part of the Mexican Empire and fought the invading guatemalan (mexican allies) for their independence and pulled an upset and defeated the guatemalan troops. When the mexicans started their invasion against El Salvador, El Salvador wanted to be part of USA as a state instead. The exhausted salvadoran troops fought for their independence against the Mexican empire and were defeated. Mexican troops controlled El Salvador for only 18 months and they eventually left never to control El Salvador ever again.

Guatemalan here. People in Guatemala reject the idea of a Central American union, specially due to the rivalry with Costa Rica and the economic difference compared to Honduras or Nicaragua. And most recently, people feel afraid of El Salvador’s president, who is kind of building a totalitarian state without the citizens realizing. So yeah, it would be difficult for it to happen. Though Bukele has stated in the past that he would be willing to reunite Central America under a one flag, which is kinda scary for someone to say it.
Salvadoran here. Dunno if afraid is really the word. I agree with you that he is in fact propping up an, as of this moment, publically approved dictatorship (which, while I like his tough on crime stance, I am not in favor of unchecked executive power). However, I feel that many in the region, including Guatemala, have been alarmingly supportive of these policies.
I don't think Guatemala would like to join a union for much of the same reasons El Salvador and Honduras would: we are each too proud of our own culture's to give up individual sovereignty and we are rightfully skeptical of our politicians enough as it is without needing to bring new ones into the mix. Good question
Central America share the same heritage and cultures together so the only thing that would really stop a union state from happening is the governments of each respective state not wanting to give up power to another although that wouldn’t even be an issue they become a federation.
Specially Nicaragua and El Salvador.
Interesting stuff. Most of my family comes from central so I like to learn about it but i really dont give a crap about it in the end. Should have stayed as one with Mexico or kept united
Funnily enough, Costa Rica never tried to leave Spain for some reason
The reason is because they often forgot Costa Rica existed, it was the most far away part of the major cities of the Capitanía General and it’s products were also produced by other territories.
Good question video
The main reason why the united central america didn't last long because they're was a series of separatism and as a result guatemala, honduras, el salvador and honduras became independent.
Not separatism, but the regional elites wanted their own fiefdom to rule autocratically without the government intervening
Conservatives vs liberals was the main problem. Well the conservative elites like the clan of aycinena or something like that
That's not an explanation.
7:05 good pronunciation 👍🏽
I think it broke up naturally due to the geography. These are essentially city states.
But then again what isn’t 😂
Also Belize is not a country is consider a colony now and it used to be part of Guatemala
There was also that time when central american countries made a coallition to defeat Nicaragua under the leadership of the mercenary William Walker, that's a great history
Tell me more please
@@kingxinko6237 sure, there was this William Walker guy, he was a filibuster from the US, he wanted to expand the sphere of influence of the south so he engaged in independent military campaings with private armies, he started in Mexico, he invaded Baja California and then Sonora founding two republics there, he was later defeated by Mexico, after that he went to Nicaragua where he took advantage of the political turmoil and became the ruler of the Nicaragua, he made the dolar the currency, made english the official language and reinstituted slavery, the the rest of Central America created a coallition composed Costa Rica (leader of the coallition), Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador plus people loyal to the former ficaraguan regime, it is called the Filibuster War or the National Campaign of 1856 - 1857, with a victory for the coallition and Walker would later come back to the US

Sorry compatriot if you really are, but no Costa Rican and he stressed "none" thinks like you, which makes me reflect if you are what you say. We respect our Central American brothers, we admire them for a couple of things, but the despotism of their rulers is not one of them, nor is the communism of the Honduran ruler, nor the totalitarianism of the Nicaraguan despot, nor the right-wing dictatorship of Mr. Bukele. which we are from every point of view obliged to respect because he governs El Salvador as El Salvador wants to be governed and if that is the style that brother Pueblo likes, then it must be respected, but not imitated. We Ticos, as an extremely educated People, know the maxim: ",... Peoples who do not remember their past are doomed to repeat their same mistakes forever,..." and with this we invite our brothers to remember the time of their former president "Martinez", a carbon copy (respecting their differences), the final fate of such a former ruler should call them to reflection. This without taking into account that Mr. Bukele's actions are very effective in attacking the effects of the tremendous crime in that country, but what about the causes of this crime? Have his government's actions also covered this topic? So perhaps we should be more cautious when it comes to extolling those who have not yet finished their work; All of them are reasons why we Ticos are extremely suspicious of a hypothetical and unrealizable Central American Union to which we encourage them if the other countries so wish, but in this aspect we prefer to "see the bulls from the sidelines", and giving ourselves beating our chests we remind all of you: ",... each one is better in his house and God in everyone's,..."🇨🇷🕊

6:17 the phygian cap on the Nicaragua coat of arms decided to not obay the laws of physics
As a Salvadoran, it would be difficult to reunify Central America in one country due to geopolitical reasons as El Salvador improves, Guatemala and Honduras would had no problem with reunification, but Nicaragua has a political difference with Ortega Dictatorship, and Costa Rica has been developed as the highest HDI of the region and it would be unlikely to reunify four countries in one for approximately two centuries.
If one day five countries accept the Central American union, it would be shared the fate as Germany, Costa Rica would look down to other countries, and if any ethnicity doesn’t accept as Central American it would shared fate as Yugoslavia just like between 1838 and 1840.
I hope people of Central America have a huge chance to enjoy peacefully with Central American reunification, once all five countries accept this.

r.i.p. to the State of Los Altos. Gone but never forgotten 😢
A few corrections:
1810 is called the first intention for independence in Mexico and Central America not just Mexico there was a second call and finally the independence of Mex and C.A. in 1821.
The intend of Guatemala to join the region to Mexico was not completed since most cities in C.A. did not agree to it forcing Mexico to invade and fight the troops defending the revel states!
The las battle was in the outskirts nod San Salvador ,ending in a withdrawal of the mexican troops that were accompanied by Guatemalan soldiers aswell, but tbh then the Mexican empire had collapsed and the so annexation came to an end..
So en reality only Guatemala agreed to join Mexico but not the rest of the states.
There is no second independence of C.A but instead a reaffirmation of the 1821 independence .
If ask the people , travel to their countries or read each of Central American countrie's declaration of independence your will find out that it's 15 of Sep of 1821 the only date admitted as the official date.
I have study this and done my research and the one problem is that Mexican historians .have their own way of telling their part of the story and Central American historians such as Larde y Larin tells tell the other side of the story.
Not true. Central America was ours. Then we collapsed.

@@abnertrinidadmartinez4789 That is where all Central Americans are wrong. In history books you can clearly see how Central America was part of our great country for a brief period of time, not sure why Central Americans get trigger by this simple fact. Also, Central Americans also have cartel problems (to a much lower degree but there’s like 80 people in all these countries so it’s expected). Central America is directly related to Mexico. Our food, media, music, and of course the culture we all share.
I’ve never been in San Salvador but it seems pretty safe now with Bukele.

Kinda wild it has been my dream since i was 9 and found out our neighbors countries that we get united into one nation, now that im older and get to talk to people from Honduras and Nicaragua and i found out we are literally the same people and i dont see the reason why it got separated (im from El Salvador)
Only half of belize during that time was British
Theyll probably unite again eventually though; although, I feel Panama could be against it because in the last 20 years thanks to their canal and its financial sector that country has started to move very serious money and will in a few decades become rich AF (compared it gdp growth to the other CA countries).

The CA-4 that was discussed at the end of the video means that any citizen of the member States can travel any of the member countries without the need of a passport as long as that citizen shows their ID card belonging to a member State. Its great.
Central America was first a part of the first Mexican Empire. They broke off from Mexico because the people of Central America did not want to be represented by someone hundreds of miles away in Mexico City. Chiapas was the only region that wanted to stay a part of Mexico. Also, in your map you show Florida being a part of the first Mexican empire, it was not. By the time Mexico gained independence, the Spanish had already lost Florida to the US.
Two years read the history, but they regret to be with crazy Iturbide a d divide like it's know
Mexico liberated ALL of the New Spain, Mexico put all the blood during the 11 years war with Spain. Central americans cowardly didn´t put 1 soldier. Mexico generously allowed each region to be independent of part of Mexico.
7:47 You should MOST DEFINITELY visit Central America 🤙🏽
I'd totally love to see Central America unify as a single, wealthier nation. That said, I do believe it to be a far fetched dream. For one, Nicaragua's dictatorship would never agree to let go of power to let someone else rule that territory. On the other hand, Costa Rica and Panama are so well off in comparison with the rest of the region that, for them, it would only negatively impact their economies with no visible advantages.
Nevertheless, I still have some hope in my heart that, in the future, new goverments realize that working together and pooling resources is one of the best ways to thrive in the current, high globalized world.
I too, would just love to see Central America all unify into one country. The big thing going for that is that all of Central America speaks Spanish--there one and only language. Yes at the moment as you pointed out a couple of these countries are more well off than the others. To me, the way it is now , these countries being so small are open to the dominance of foreign bankers and industrialists who can rule with an iron hand. What I am coming to is Guatemala back in 1954, when the country was under the dominance of the United Fruit Company. I think you know all about that. Like you, my hope is that future governments will work together and the unified Central America will become one strong country with a strong economy and an affluent society to go with it. A Central America that is free and independent.
Please allow me to point out a slight imprecision regarding the state of Los Altos, the short-lived 6th State of Central America. It was constituted in what today is the southwestern part of Guatemala, with its capital city in Quetzaltenango, which wanted to emancipate from the rest of Guatemala. (The map makes Los Altos appear as part of the current territory of Chiapas and Tabasco) There can be some confusion because the current borders between Mexico and Guatemala were not defined but until the 1880s. Regarding Chiapas, it used to have two internal political divisions: Ciudad Real and Soconusco. Both held a referendum in 1823 and decided to stay a part of Mexico. However, the results of the referendum in Soconusco are contested to this day by some historians, said to have been fraudulent to favor the interests of Ciudad Real. This would have given a substantial part of the coast of Chiapas to Guatemala, or to the State of Los Altos, should it have survived.
As a Honduran I think it would be really great if we were all one country that would be great

I never forget crossing the El Salvador-Honduras border. I didn't stop at the immigration office for a stamp, thining it was OK because of the CA-4. When I crossed to Nicaragua from Honduras, I got called into an office, getting hassled & extorted (i talked em down from a $60 to $20 fine as they slowly pretended to not know English).
