The reporter is from a TV station in Rhode Island. On the news that night, the reporter was trying to defend his question, not understanding why he got the response he did.
The more I watch of BB press conferences, the more I appreciate why he is the way he is during them. 90% of the questions are general, unintelligent, dumb questions just meant to fetch a particular type of response. "Do you prefer to play a low scoring game?" It's a fucking terrible question that comes from someone who doesn't know seem like they know anything.
I remember a question to Bill about playing against Manning. The guy asked him "What things in common have you experienced playing against Manning?" Bill says "I guess, Manning." As if Bill is going to go over his entire playbook on how to beat Peyton Manning there at the press conference.
As lifelong Pats fans, my Dad and I would be watching a presser like this and as soon as we heard a long, dumbass question to BB, we'd look at eachother and go "uh oh" kinda half grinning. Then when the inevitable dismantling of a human being happens, we just die laughing. Beauty. Never change Bill!
I make a point to watch Bill Belichick press conferences every single chance I can. He ALWAYS rewards intelligent questions with amazing answers...and he treats dumb questions with the totally glib answers they deserve. To wit...Belichick: "Uhhh...what are you talking about." This is basically Belichick giving this young reporter a chance to change the subject so as to not humiliate himself. Egoist reporter then falls into the trap of reiterating his ridiculous question...is this "low scoring style a style you like and that the team prefers?" Just like DestroyNations in the comments here...I KNEW what the answer would be. "We prefer to win." I love it. I'm not even a Patriots fan, but I hope Belichick coaches for another hundred years. To hear him destroy poor journalists who didn't do their homework is just magic...they babble with dozens of words on unintelligent questions and Belichick only needs a half dozen words or less to shut them down.
Same. So awesome to watch his press conferences. The only thing to look forward to in a Patriots loss is Belichick's press conference hahah. As such he is super frustrated and all these poor journalists like school children ponder if they can ask their question knowing the headmaster is ready waiting with a whip. Hahaha
Think the one that will always stick in my mind is "We're on to Cincinnati" after repeated questions as to 'Is Tom Brady done??'. The reporter was given the answer of a 'Seriously..??' Bill shake of the head, followed by the Bill incredulous look of 'man give it up..!', So in those immortal words, "We're on to 2019/20..!!"
@Mark Boyd Well said. Believe it or not, Belichick has caught a lot of flack from Boston-area reporters and media on his demeanor over the years, but what a "coincidence" that as the Pats win another Superbowl, those critics slowly become silenced lol. Can Bill be VERY surly after a Pats loss? Of course. But, Belichick has never had a "rah-rah" personality like Pete Carroll after a loss, so that's how he's always been. The thing I've come to appreciate with Belichick is his style has never changed since he got to Foxboro. I'm sure Bill would rather go to a dentist to have a tooth pulled vs. doing press conferences, but so long as a reporter asks a good, common sense question, Bill will be respectful. BUT, ask a stupid question like this guy did, and Bill will ALWAYS react like he just did: not suffering fools.
As a fan he is exactly what I want coaching the Pats. I hated Pete Carroll, ray berry, and even Parcells. He is unreal. If I found out he was an alien, literally from another planet, I would honestly say..."well ok that makes more sense".
I think Coach Belichick, deep down inside, wanted to ask the reporter if he slept through his journalism classes, or if he just didn't attend at all....
Belichek's reply should be: "If playing low scoring games was my secret preference, I wouldn't admit it. Nothing personal, but I would be stupid to answer a question like that honestly." If the journalist pressed, I would accuse him of being a Jets fan.
The more you listen to the question the funnier it gets. Coach the game was played predominantly in the teens. Is that a style that you're comfortable playing?
Great comment, VK. Imagine being a destitute Browns fan .... they hardly EVER score 27 points in a game!!! They did it once this season ... and of course LOST at Indi on Sept 24th. Scored exactly 28 only once last season also .... but also a loss .... Week 8 at home to Jets, 31 - 28.
Can't believe SNL hasn't discovered Belichick. The possibilities are endless. Belichick at a presser with some clueless reporters (funny enough already, but SNL could take to a new level), or Belichick in a 12 Step group. Celebrity Jeopardy . . .
I'd ask him this: Q: "Coach, would you attribute this particular win to everyone giving 110% or to your philosophy that there's no "me" in "team"? A: "Me" is in "team," so I'd go with the first one.
When I heard that question, my mind immediately went to a WWF Texas death match, when the reporter was on his back in the middle of the ring, Belichick was on top of the corner post and did a piledriver bodyslam with his elbow across the throat,... game over, lol.
A lot of it had to do with the reporter's disrespectful demeanor. He was slouched down in his seat looking way too casual. As if talking to the Greatest Coach in the History of Professional Football was no big deal...
War reporter: "Gen. Belichick, how do you feel about the landing in Normandy? Was the defense greater than you expected?" Gen. Belichick: "We're on to Paris."
They win which ever way the game dictates and however the Patriots performance dictates on that given night, and however things fall into place for that specific matchup. That’s what makes it a pointless question.
Imagine you are an expert in your field, and a few times a week you have to go into a room of lay people who think they’re subject matter experts and field their questions. We would all get frustrated after a week of it, especially if we had work to do.
I want Edelman’s jacket... can anyone please help I’ve tried everything and simply can’t find the brand/style nothin.. he’s worn it in several interviews
The reporter not sitting up in his chair, asking a question to a legend in the game, will get that appropriate response. Remember that kids during an interview, not matter how high you get, pretend you talking to Jesus.
I know this is old , but our small town newspaper had this reporter who would write predominantly negative stories about the Pats and Coach in particular. Coach was ok at first but I think the word got back to him about this particular guy . The reporter wanted special access to the team , coaches and owners . He never got it so he’d write ridiculous stories I.e. “ the Pats only won by 20 “ . One day he asked a long and non sense question and Coach just took him to task . It was a beautiful bare bottom spanking. Even other reporters chuckled. After that he sat way in the back and never asked another question.
That SB drop hurts the image but Welker still had the slightly better hands over his career. Just look at the guys records. Led the league in receptions 4 or 5x. Him and Edelman were pretty interchangeable imo. It’s easy to say Edelman is better because he’s still playing and everything he does and has done are fresh in our minds. Fans have short memories when it comes to great players. That being said Edelman still has years to surpass him.
Wes Welker also had better receivers around him, so he was far more likely to get open further down the field. Besides Gronk and Edelman name another NE offensive player that had a 1000 yard season off the top of your head. With as many players as New England rotates in every game Edelman's stats are pretty damn amazing. Welker's hands were trash during the playoffs and Super bowl clutch drives. I'll take Edelman over Welker any day.
Not gonna lie the reporter looked half awake like he was up for hours trying to come up with the perfect question yo ask only to see crap I have to to the presser now.
Anyone asking questions of Belichick in regard to his preference on how games go, his game plan, or whether he likes something that happened.... you already screwed up.
Because that means he won the super bowl. tbh thats the only time I've seen him willing to answer all kind of questions is after he wins the super bowl 🤷♂️
Nwahs Nworb Not in every case. You have to look at what happened in Cleveland. He admits that he made mistakes in how he treated the press (basically, he tried to use Parcells style, but that didn’t work.)
Imagine if there was a porn star with his work ethic... Q: How did you excel in your career? Girl: I studied a lot of film. I know how to grind it out.
5 years later......look at Belichick NOW (October 9, 2023). His team has just been blown out in back-to-back losses to the tune of 72-3 including a blowout 34-0 loss at HOME. It's over for Bill. He's lost it and it's time for him to move along. It's fine to be a smug a-hole when you're fresh off a Super Bowl win and you have The GOAT at QB. It's quite something else altogether when your entire team is a steaming pile of excrement. Oh, and I'm not a "hater" or even a Jets fan. I'm a PATRIOTS FAN since 1971. Bill is turning into Dick McPherson before our very eyes.
To add insult to injury, they are playing in some tiny stadium whose capacity is ..... 27,000!!! Seriously. Not only that, but they will play there next year and I think in 2019 also. Then both Rams and them share a new stadium in 2020 and "forever" after. If they had played the Patriots IN Los Angeles this season, I bet there would have been more NE fans than Charger fans.
Their final home game is Week 17, Dec 31st, versus ..... the Raiders!!! Because Chargers have come out of woodwork and are playing well somehow, that might be for a playoff spot. If it had been in LA early in season when the "Bolts" started 0 and 4, there DEFINITELY would have been more Raider fans there ....
If Belichick had answered that question: "We're comfortable playing any way that results in wins. We manage the clock, control the ball, and minimize our opponent's chances. For the last few games, the outcome has been scoring under 30 points. But we sure wouldn't mind scoring more." No one would be saying it was a dumb question.
Yes, it would still be, because half of your made up answer is a worthless answer. It's generic and unspecific. Literally anyone - coach or player - from any team could always say, ""We're comfortable playing any way that results in wins. We manage the clock, control the ball, and minimize our opponent's chances." Belichick doesn't do that kind of pointless replies. The question was pointless and BB avoided wasting time giving a pointless answer.
@@smaller_cathedrals Maybe it would still be a dumb question. But no one would be saying it was. I still think he was getting at something that could have been interesting if BB wasn't just being surly. They were playing low-scoring games and it makes sense to ask the coach about that. It's not an interviewer's job to be insightful or interesting. They are there to get the athlete/coach talking.
I have many better questions I would like to ask BB if I only could. Does the team run certain plays simply in order to draw out their opponent in the first half, not necessarily trying their best to score? Who analyzes those play results and how much before halftime do they agree on adjustments that must be put in place during the halftime break? These things are obviously going on but we don't know the answer because reporters are dumb.
Good teams make halftime adjustments, great teams make adjustments on the fly, the Patriots are the latter. I think a question like that would be a mistake, it would just piss him off.
Linda Linda The thing they have in common is all that matters in the end. Sure the grind has a certain level of achievement when you win, but that’s not what he was put there to do. Reporter got a proper answer
