Answering before watching it: With that hype, that contract and him being thrown as the lead color guy from the get go - it was obvious he would not live up to it immidiately. However, I would be lying if I said he was terrible all the time. He is getting better with each game as he gains experience. I think he will be good eventually but I'm not sure if he'll ever reach the level which would be worth the amount of money he gets.

As someone who studies the game obsessively, having a commentator that's straight analytical and less fluff would be amazing, like you said letting Brady actually criticize players. It's better than listening to Collinsworth just making the same noise over and over again and bringing up Mahomes in a game that has nothing to do with him. So far though I actually like Brady's commentating, like in the Buccaneers game I heard a few quiet moments where you hear him say "You got him" one of them being right before the Evans TD, makes it interesting hearing the greatest QB making reads from the booth.

Great and fair analysis, I especially agree about the 2-minute drill factor. Personally, I think this is just another avenue for Brady to test himself in and there’s absolutely no way he’s gonna fulfill the duration of that contract. I imagine the opportunity to call a Super Bowl this very season (instead of waiting 2-3 years for it) played a big part in him taking up the gig now

The tricky part with hating is that if he leans into it too much, the viewer might start to think “why am I watching this mediocre crap?” And change the channel.
Praising the players as if they’re demigods communicates to the viewer that they absolutely have to keep watching because they’re witnessing something great. That’s why the networks lean toward that style of commentary

If he can be a critical analyst that really hammers mediocrity, I think I’ll appreciate his commentary more. His best moment so far has easily been when he called out Baker and the Bucs, because he was 100% correct. That’s pretty much the same Bucs team that choked to the Falcons of all teams, they ain’t winning a ring at this rate.

    Here's the problem with Brady:
    1. His voice is annoying.
    2. He has no charisma.
    3. He's not a good public speaker.
    4. He's not entertaining.
    5. He doesn't add much to the broadcast (in fact, currently he _detracts_ from it).
#3 and #5 can be overcome. #1, #2, and #4 cannot. Romo obviously has an incredibly deep understanding of the game, but crucially can explain what is going on as it's happening (or even briefly before). Olsen is great because he's funny and also good at explaining things well as they're happening. While Romo has the gravelly quarterback voice that comes from years of shouting (which Brady is oddly devoid of), neither one of them are grating to listen to, unlike Tom's nasally voice. He's not funny or relatable. He's utterly unlikeable.
And when Tom regales us with stories, they tend to be completely unrelated to whatever is happening on the field and at a moment when the viewer wants to hear anything but some random event that once happened in Tom Brady's life. Brady doesn't seem to understand broadcast pacing. That will surely improve with time, but it's clear that he hasn't actually watched many broadcast football games. During a recent game he started telling a story and had to pause to, you know, let the game happen, and then like a full 3 minutes later, during a brief moment of silence, Tom just suddenly picks up where he left off, as if anyone still cared. Broadcasting is full of interruptions and moments when people accidentally talk over each other. Good broadcasters understand that past a certain point, you drop the thing you were talking about, no matter how badly you wanted to finish your story, because it just becomes awkward to revisit after so long. Not Tom. Tom will assert his dominance in the broadcast booth just like he did on the field. Everyone needs to hear Tom's story. Even if they think they don't. Even if it has no relevance to the game that everyone is _trying_ to watch.
Brady's disjointed dialog and unwillingness to use filler words are not the problem. In fact, I think they make him better in the booth. It demonstrates a willingness and an ability to think on his feet, and additional games will only reinforce his thought flow and help him improve. I would rather hear him correct himself and use pauses than to keep filling the air with nonsense. What gets me is when he makes a statement that offers zero insight and adds nothing to the broadcast, which he does quite often. Or when he starts a sentence and then aborts it suddenly for seemingly no reason. Or how he insists on calling the red zone the "red area." He's the first broadcast I've ever heard use that term.
And Tom is no good at trash talking, either. He reminds me of my friend's dad when he came home in a bad mood one time and complained about the trash cans being "all the way goddamn down at the end of the driveway." That's not the way you use angry language, Rick. You gotta sort your words better and put some more passion behind them. I get that Brady is trying to hold back, but he sounds like a square. He always sounds so much like a square. Like a person with zero personality. Probably because... never mind.
Fox always has the worst broadcast crews. They lucked into Greg Olsen and if they were smart, they would have built around him and told Brady to pound sand. Instead, we have to suffer through not only his broadcasts but the idiotic commercials promoting it, as if anyone is hyped about Brady's presence in the booth or are watching the game for any other reason than because it's only being broadcast on Fox. I seriously do not understand spending that kind of money on him and then wasting even more money on making commercials which actively subtract from the ad time you could be selling to other businesses. But this is Fox, so none of it is surprising.
