Good thing about MG is that they don’t really have a large Ice business to destroy so they can crack on without the risk of bankrupting themselves and alienating their existing customers. If they can make them with profit at the right price VW and PSA need to watch out.

He couldn't be more happy, and its not just the fact that company is paying for it, he actually likes the car that he wouldn't ever look at. Prices will go down slightly now, but it won't be enough to make me buy anything else, as this mg is probably what I can only just afford, so even if £31000 car will go down to £28000 it's still no for me.

Tish, you need to use the favourite button on the steering wheel (the one with the stars) - that way you can set one to air con and the other to regen level and not go via the screen! Did you try the voice commands at all?

Hi Bryan, I did have someone at MG explain this to me after the confusion. Great they can be customised but it was definitely tricky to get your head around. I think It would take a good couple of months of ownership to get the hang of it. I did not try the voice command unfortunately, the negatives of only trying the car for a few hours. Maybe it would be good to re-visit this car and try everything again?
Great car. Looks a little bit like the Kona from the front and the Leaf from the rear. The side profile and lights are very smart. This is a real EV industry disruptor and it'll do very well.
This is the one. Could still be closer to the 200 rather than 300 mark for monthly payments, but I’ve been waiting for a car like this. Let’s hope it’s actually available unlike most others!
Good review but at 3:25 she says "no hub caps here"..."it gets alloys in this 2 tone design"......they are in fact plastic wheel covers with standard silver alloys underneath just like the facelift ZS. Also the Trophy does have an adjustable height boot floor (confirmed by Miles Roberts of Chorley Group MG on the recent podcast) At 6:50 she calls it an MG3 easy slip of the tongue though :) Nice to see close ups of the up/down buttons on the steering wheel not seen in most other reviews thumbs up
Just so you know, MG's parent company SAIC also manufactures Volkwagens in China. It wouldn't be far fetched that there's some snooping around going on
What is it about touch screens? To operate the climate controls or the re-gen settings you have to take your eyes off the road to see where you are placing your fingers. Why not just have conventional switches that you can feel and don't have to look at?
slightly confused why MG seem to have fitted all the press demo cars with the bright red USB cable. Assume its a selling point to highlight for them but while its a neat little tidying thing, its also ugly with dangly cables so I’d have toned that down
Great Video. Another great value car from MG. Why do other car makers have to rip you off with their pricing. Its not the best looking car from the back when you look at the Trophy but the SE version looks ok.

This much more affordable EV deserves to sell by the bucket-load...! £26k and a 7 year warranty... The legacy manufacturers should be rightly rattled - they've been pushing nothing but over-priced, overly-excessive SUVs that your average buyer could never possibly afford... all in the name of their profits... Finally, MG has shown that a quality, perfectly day-to-day usable range EV can be sold at near-enough price parity to the established ICE marques... Couldn't agree more. I would rather give my money to a democracy but the legacy makers are really dragging their heels. Much more profit up where they like to play 🙁
7 year warranty is not what it seems, a lot of items only covered for 3 years inc screen..and 60000 miles warranty expires so for a lot of people it is a 3 year warranty .
@@talkandplay Average annual mileage for a car in UK is 7,400 and it's less than that for non business users.I'd be surprised if one in twenty non-buisness users do £20k+ per year.
absulutly nothing wrong with MG5 wheels. They keep the car off the ground which is their purpose. Style is a personal thing, I far prefer function over style.
Great video Tish. I can imagine a lot of e-ups, e Golfs and leaf's being traded in for this. Given the residual value of those cars, they won't need to find many pennies to pay for one.
wife might be in the market for an e-golf so hopefully prices might come down. I suggested the MG as not a big jump to the new alternative but she’s a VW fan..
Badge snobbery?!!.....This is by mindless sheep who know nothing about the brand and heritage......one of the only 3 foreign marque's to win the Mille Miglia, Le Mans, Speed Records......the lists goes on! Fabled racing drivers such as Stirling Moss, Earl howe, Capt Eyston, Donald Cambell, Tazio Nouvolari ect.........the likes of which VW and other brands (let alone KIA and Hyundai), could only dream about! Oh yes, and Chinese not British?.......in the same way that Jaguar land Rover is Indian and Rolls, Bentley and Mini are German and Vauxhall are French! And to sum it up, the world over is raving about its comparison to the Lamborghini Urus! An excellent review by someone who takes the pure essence of a car and distills it into what makes it great 👍
I was waiting for this video. I wonder if the difference between the standard and long range versions is mitigated a bit by the LFP chemistry of the standard range variant meaning you can use 100% of its capacity? 🤔
my friend want this MG4 ,here in china called MG mulan, and we did research of details of MG4 battery pack .the 51kwh model with LFP battery ,64kwh model with Ternary lithium battery. for sure
Already ordered Long range SE - was prepared to make some compromises over my other choice of Cupra Born for the £10k saving but looks like I won't have to make very many at all! It's even cheaper than my current Peugeot e-208 GT but other than the looks the MG4 has it beaten in all ways.
You're going along the same path as I did. I had a E2008 but the pants range, constant electrical gremlins, poor performance and sllllooooowww charging made me decide to change. Took a Cupra Born V3 for a test drive, and the one I tested had a super rattly interior, a rear view mirror that fell off half way through the test drive and a waiting list of 14 months. I tried a ID3, same rattles, and a tail light was dead with only 410 miles on the clock. In the end, I had a 24 hour test drive in a MG4 Trophy long range. Built better than the VW equivalent, better charging and range, 15k less money and the little niggles were much easier to deal with. Ended up with a Volcanic Orange MG4 Trophy long range which I've had 2 months now...... it's been great! Had to prise it out of my wife's hands, she's ordered a matte green XPower 😅 No complaints from us.
Not cheap in the Netherlands, entry level is €33.500. for a car that can get 300km range on a summer day. For an EV that is the next in line of an endless row of 4 door salons (or SUV's for that matter). Though it is a tiny bit different in looks. For EV mass adoption there have to be smaller €20.000 cars.

Had my Tesla model 3 for 18 months, the 4 cabin ports are all USB C, I still have no devices at all that have USB C connections, and several that are still USB A, there's nothing at all frustrating about having (still very much needed) USB A ports

Great looking car. I'm wary of the control panel - a lack of responsiveness usually indicates a bad panel, so unlikely an update will fix it. Please don't be offended, but I don't need the visual styling explained to me. Sorry you didn't like the previous hub caps. Perhaps if the redesign improves the drag coefficient or something? Your steering descriptions are very good though. A technical teardown of the VW ID4 suggests it's not very good, like the ID3, - especially for the money. Perhaps VW isn't the gold standard?
just got my trophy extended today and should note a lot of the bugs a few have seen, like on lane control etc seems to have been sorted out. I love it already and barely drove it !!
Do we know if the performance model will have the extra long range? That would be something, especially if it can come in under 40k. Knowing MG's pricing, they'll probably reach that price point quite easily. Until recently I was only really considering a Hyundai (Ioniq 5) or a KIA (EV6 or Niro e), but this MG4 really does tick all the boxes. It would be nice to have even faster charging, but 30 odd mins is within my requirements, and is actually one of the less important stats.
MMmmm Tish can i point out , If i am not mistaken @ 3.20 "alloy wheels" yes it is Alloy wheels on the car you have BUT they are under the wheeltrim you are showing. Just saying ...😁
@@Brian-om2hh true but based on this review you'd think there are no hub caps and that was the actual alloy wheel. Tesla have done the same and there is nothing wrong with it as long as you know what you're buying. I see it as a feature, easier to replace the trim than repair an alloy 🙂

If so does it work well? Over the air updates ? if so how often. Carplay .. Android Auto ? Frunk ? Lights LED ? Adaptive? Apparently I've read they are going to offer battery upgrade if you want to increase the range.. and an upgrade from 400 to 800v charging.. maybe that's only with the battery swap ?

Only downside I can see , as a UK driver, is no rear wiper. Hopefully the rear lip will prevent some of the road spray but why are they doing this? Otherwise it looks to be a very good car. Thanks for the review.
I can't see the issue, and I've been driving for 35 years. Name one standard saloon car that has a rear wiper, and the stupidly popular Tesla vehicles don't have them either. For me the lack of a rear wiper as reason to not buy a car, especially a vehicle thay will save a fortune on fuel over it's life compared to an ICE vehicle of the same dimensions.
@@johnnodge4327 John I understand what your saying However as a driver of 50 years , and counting, I prefer a wiper on the back of the car when it is a hatch. On a saloon car you have quite a large boot to deflect a lot of the road muck on a hatch not so much.hence the reason I said that I hope the lip on this car helps. I drive a Zoe at the moment, which has a rear wiper, but my PCP ends next June so I will be looking for an alternative and this could be it
@@jameschapman4824 The lower rear light bar/duck tail will keep the rear window clear of road muck, especially if Rain X is used. My Freelander 2 rear window has a terrible habit of collecting road dirt, but that's a problem with the almost vertical rear design. The sloping rear window with lower duck tail will reduce this massively of the MG4 should reduce road spray from the rear to minimal levels. The inclusion of 360° cameras on the Trophy model also helps mitigate the need for a rear wiper when reversing.

A very annoying thing is when you set it up for your preferences ie steering, throttle ect it doesn't memorise it so goes back to default the next time you use the car

They are just covers and the wheels beneath are pretty unimpressive too. Thing is, you can only see wheel detail when a vehicle is stationary and you are outside so although they are plain ugly you can avoid them. 😉

With the cost of electricity supply soaring it would be great to have a fuel cost comparison against an equivalent unleaded car especially for drivers thinking of this car for higher mileages?
My son has just received his new tesla company car twin motor, And when I asked how much electric compared to fuel price it was closer than anyone would think.
That's why you using off peak tariff and it cost near to nothing. Octopus 7.5p per KWH, so 100 miles around £1.5. compare to 70 mpg diesel will cost around £12
At 4 miles per kW electricity would have to be around 70p kW to be the same price as running an equivalent petrol car. Home electricity could hit 70p/kW. However, electric bills will be unaffordable for a large proportion of the country at that level and since electricity price is fixed around gas generating prices then gas will probably be a lot more expensive as well. If this happens and government do nothing the UKs problems are greater than what it costs to charge a car. You can get tariffs as low as 7.5p/kW for overnight charging.
My son bought one of these in November 2022. Had to return it with several faults less than 24 hrs later. Whilst at the dealership the front end was damaged by an employee. Fast forward to January 2023 still not repaired as body panel unavailable, split seat not available, but leaking gear box had been sorted he was told. He finally rejected the car, and to be fair the dealership gave a full refund. He bought a Cupra Born and although his time with the MG4 was short, compared with the Cupra he can see why the MG4 is a cheaper car.
Everything should be seen in the context of its price of course. Great car I suppose. Would have liked 18 inch wheels though. And I am not sure about the design of the rear. But still, this will be a success, I guess.
As an admittedly older driver, why is there such emphasis on a car's 0-62mph performance? Good acceleration is reassuring when overtaking but from a standing start is one of the most annoying types of behaviour on the roads.
If only they did a smaller version for us retired folk It would definitely be on my wish list. One day maybe, until then the only sensible option is the Zoe, at much more money for less!
Thanks for all the thoughts. It was the physical size that was stopping me because it was for my wife as well as me. Unfortunately she has been very ill with cancer and won’t ever be driving again so that part is not a problem any more. Plus we are lucky to have a dealer only about 3 miles from us. I think I’ll have another look.

Tish, you need to use the favourite button on the steering wheel (the one with the stars) - that way you can set one to air con and the other to regen level and not go via the screen! Did you try the voice commands at all?
If the regen levels can be added to the steering wheel controls then i might like this car!

Hi Bryan, I did have someone at MG explain this to me after the confusion. Great they can be customised but it was definitely tricky to get your head around. I think It would take a good couple of months of ownership to get the hang of it. I did not try the voice command unfortunately, the negatives of only trying the car for a few hours. Maybe it would be good to re-visit this car and try everything again?

Great car. Looks a little bit like the Kona from the front and the Leaf from the rear. The side profile and lights are very smart. This is a real EV industry disruptor and it'll do very well.

There were a few hundred going spare last week. 2000 were brought into the UK, with 1100 being spoken for.... move quick and you might be lucky..

Good review but at 3:25 she says "no hub caps here"..."it gets alloys in this 2 tone design"......they are in fact plastic wheel covers with standard silver alloys underneath just like the facelift ZS.
Also the Trophy does have an adjustable height boot floor (confirmed by Miles Roberts of Chorley Group MG on the recent podcast)
At 6:50 she calls it an MG3 easy slip of the tongue though :)

Great car. I thought white might not suit it but actually it looks quiet good in white. Much nicer than an ID3 sorry Tish but it just is.
White will look a bit better with the black roof on the Trophy model, that's what I've ordered.
What is it about touch screens? To operate the climate controls or the re-gen settings you have to take your eyes off the road to see where you are placing your fingers. Why not just have conventional switches that you can feel and don't have to look at?

slightly confused why MG seem to have fitted all the press demo cars with the bright red USB cable. Assume its a selling point to highlight for them but while its a neat little tidying thing, its also ugly with dangly cables so I’d have toned that down

7 year warranty is not what it seems, a lot of items only covered for 3 years inc screen..and 60000 miles warranty expires so for a lot of people it is a 3 year warranty .

absulutly nothing wrong with MG5 wheels. They keep the car off the ground which is their purpose. Style is a personal thing, I far prefer function over style.
And the MG4 DOES have hubcaps with alloys very similar to those shown beneath.
Plus…not 2xUSB-Cs at the front. 1 USB-A and 1 USB-C
Great video Tish. I can imagine a lot of e-ups, e Golfs and leaf's being traded in for this. Given the residual value of those cars, they won't need to find many pennies to pay for one.
wife might be in the market for an e-golf so hopefully prices might come down. I suggested the MG as not a big jump to the new alternative but she’s a VW fan..
Badge snobbery?!!.....This is by mindless sheep who know nothing about the brand and heritage......one of the only 3 foreign marque's to win the Mille Miglia, Le Mans, Speed Records......the lists goes on! Fabled racing drivers such as Stirling Moss, Earl howe, Capt Eyston, Donald Cambell, Tazio Nouvolari ect.........the likes of which VW and other brands (let alone KIA and Hyundai), could only dream about!

That's an assumption. MGs website says nothing about a LFP battery and neither do any of the reviews.
my friend want this MG4 ,here in china called MG mulan, and we did research of details of MG4 battery pack .the 51kwh model with LFP battery ,64kwh model with Ternary lithium battery. for sure

Already ordered Long range SE - was prepared to make some compromises over my other choice of Cupra Born for the £10k saving but looks like I won't have to make very many at all! It's even cheaper than my current Peugeot e-208 GT but other than the looks the MG4 has it beaten in all ways.

You're going along the same path as I did. I had a E2008 but the pants range, constant electrical gremlins, poor performance and sllllooooowww charging made me decide to change. Took a Cupra Born V3 for a test drive, and the one I tested had a super rattly interior, a rear view mirror that fell off half way through the test drive and a waiting list of 14 months. I tried a ID3, same rattles, and a tail light was dead with only 410 miles on the clock. In the end, I had a 24 hour test drive in a MG4 Trophy long range. Built better than the VW equivalent, better charging and range, 15k less money and the little niggles were much easier to deal with. Ended up with a Volcanic Orange MG4 Trophy long range which I've had 2 months now...... it's been great! Had to prise it out of my wife's hands, she's ordered a matte green XPower 😅

Not cheap in the Netherlands, entry level is €33.500. for a car that can get 300km range on a summer day.
For an EV that is the next in line of an endless row of 4 door salons (or SUV's for that matter). Though it is a tiny bit different in looks.
For EV mass adoption there have to be smaller €20.000 cars.

Had my Tesla model 3 for 18 months, the 4 cabin ports are all USB C, I still have no devices at all that have USB C connections, and several that are still USB A, there's nothing at all frustrating about having (still very much needed) USB A ports
and you can always order an adaptor for $5 from amazon when those devices do come - no issue at all

Great looking car. I'm wary of the control panel - a lack of responsiveness usually indicates a bad panel, so unlikely an update will fix it. Please don't be offended, but I don't need the visual styling explained to me. Sorry you didn't like the previous hub caps. Perhaps if the redesign improves the drag coefficient or something? Your steering descriptions are very good though. A technical teardown of the VW ID4 suggests it's not very good, like the ID3, - especially for the money. Perhaps VW isn't the gold standard?
just got my trophy extended today and should note a lot of the bugs a few have seen, like on lane control etc seems to have been sorted out. I love it already and barely drove it !!
Do we know if the performance model will have the extra long range? That would be something, especially if it can come in under 40k. Knowing MG's pricing, they'll probably reach that price point quite easily.
Until recently I was only really considering a Hyundai (Ioniq 5) or a KIA (EV6 or Niro e), but this MG4 really does tick all the boxes. It would be nice to have even faster charging, but 30 odd mins is within my requirements, and is actually one of the less important stats.
Rwally like this car. They seem to have nailed it. I know its not a direct competitir but tempted to cancel my ioniq 5 order and go for the mg!

@@Brian-om2hh true but based on this review you'd think there are no hub caps and that was the actual alloy wheel. Tesla have done the same and there is nothing wrong with it as long as you know what you're buying. I see it as a feature, easier to replace the trim than repair an alloy 🙂

Test driving the trophy model on 23/11/22, probably cancelling a Ford focus order that I have been waiting for since Feb 22 and still do not have a delivery date.

Hey Tish...great review! I doubt we will ever see them in Canada but a super interesting EV! I do however feel your pain about the USB Port thing...whenever I jump into either my 72 MGB or my 68 MGC, MG neglected to put any USB ports in at all...very disapointing!

Only downside I can see , as a UK driver, is no rear wiper. Hopefully the rear lip will prevent some of the road spray but why are they doing this? Otherwise it looks to be a very good car. Thanks for the review.
I can't see the issue, and I've been driving for 35 years.
Name one standard saloon car that has a rear wiper, and the stupidly popular Tesla vehicles don't have them either. For me the lack of a rear wiper as reason to not buy a car, especially a vehicle thay will save a fortune on fuel over it's life compared to an ICE vehicle of the same dimensions.
I use Rain.x on my rear window (wiper motors broken) and it's great.
@@johnnodge4327 John I understand what your saying However as a driver of 50 years , and counting, I prefer a wiper on the back of the car when it is a hatch. On a saloon car you have quite a large boot to deflect a lot of the road muck on a hatch not so much.hence the reason I said that I hope the lip on this car helps. I drive a Zoe at the moment, which has a rear wiper, but my PCP ends next June so I will be looking for an alternative and this could be it

The lower rear light bar/duck tail will keep the rear window clear of road muck, especially if Rain X is used.
My Freelander 2 rear window has a terrible habit of collecting road dirt, but that's a problem with the almost vertical rear design.
The sloping rear window with lower duck tail will reduce this massively of the MG4 should reduce road spray from the rear to minimal levels.
The inclusion of 360° cameras on the Trophy model also helps mitigate the need for a rear wiper when reversing.
Hope the Performance version comes out very soon

A very annoying thing is when you set it up for your preferences ie steering, throttle ect it doesn't memorise it so goes back to default the next time you use the car

They are just covers and the wheels beneath are pretty unimpressive too. Thing is, you can only see wheel detail when a vehicle is stationary and you are outside so although they are plain ugly you can avoid them. 😉

With the cost of electricity supply soaring it would be great to have a fuel cost comparison against an equivalent unleaded car especially for drivers thinking of this car for higher mileages?
My son has just received his new tesla company car twin motor, And when I asked how much electric compared to fuel price it was closer than anyone would think.
That's why you using off peak tariff and it cost near to nothing. Octopus 7.5p per KWH, so 100 miles around £1.5. compare to 70 mpg diesel will cost around £12
At 4 miles per kW electricity would have to be around 70p kW to be the same price as running an equivalent petrol car.
Home electricity could hit 70p/kW. However, electric bills will be unaffordable for a large proportion of the country at that level and since electricity price is fixed around gas generating prices then gas will probably be a lot more expensive as well. If this happens and government do nothing the UKs problems are greater than what it costs to charge a car.
You can get tariffs as low as 7.5p/kW for overnight charging.

My son bought one of these in November 2022. Had to return it with several faults less than 24 hrs later. Whilst at the dealership the front end was damaged by an employee. Fast forward to January 2023 still not repaired as body panel unavailable, split seat not available, but leaking gear box had been sorted he was told.
He finally rejected the car, and to be fair the dealership gave a full refund. He bought a Cupra Born and although his time with the MG4 was short, compared with the Cupra he can see why the MG4 is a cheaper car.

Everything should be seen in the context of its price of course. Great car I suppose. Would have liked 18 inch wheels though. And I am not sure about the design of the rear. But still, this will be a success, I guess.
As an admittedly older driver, why is there such emphasis on a car's 0-62mph performance? Good acceleration is reassuring when overtaking but from a standing start is one of the most annoying types of behaviour on the roads.

Thanks for all the thoughts. It was the physical size that was stopping me because it was for my wife as well as me. Unfortunately she has been very ill with cancer and won’t ever be driving again so that part is not a problem any more. Plus we are lucky to have a dealer only about 3 miles from us. I think I’ll have another look.
