If you have ever owned a Boxster, you have heard your fair share of "it's not a proper Porsche is it, you'd only buy one of those if you can't afford a 911" but YOU know it is one of the most balanced drivers cars out there.
With the Porsche purists dream finally becoming a reality, we wanted to question, is a Spyder RS Porsche Perfection? Maybe.... as long as you know how to operate the roof!

Agreed! I have one in my collection and I started driving it like a bat out of hell on Day 1. I also own a 992 GT3 RS, 992 GT3 (manual), GT4 RS, 992 GT3 Cup, and an M3...but my Spyder RS may be my favorite.

@@hbullock Indeed they are! They are fantastic on both the GT4 RS and Spyder RS. I always hit the PDK Sport button, so I get the addictive sound of the downshifts as well. 🤘🏻

Was waiting for this video as well as waiting for my Spyder RS, can not wait to start driving it soon . The moment I drove Spyder RS for the first time I understood how special it is , sold my 718 Spyder and waiting for RS. Between my manual 992 Touring and Spyder RS it will be hard choice….. Amazing video , thank you !!!! Most guys I know who got Spyder RS driving it a lot and it will go down in history as most iconic and special model made!!!

This natural aspirated race derived engine in this Spyker is just unbelievable. This car will go down in history as one of the greatest ever built.
Great video. Loved the videography. Turned down allocation to keep my “lowly 718 Spyder. Never selling that one. Sorry can’t give up the 3rd pedal. It’s a unicorn in its own right - Mid engined, NASP, convertible, manual - try and find a manufacturer who was making these recently.

Great video! I just got mine delivered 1 week ago (same spec in White and Blue Wheels) - TBH, the roof is a piece of cake, it's very simple . Takes 1.5 minutes to place or remove - alone. It actually makes it that much more special. Cant wait for the Canadian winter to be over to actually drive it! Now sitting warmly in place beside it's older sister (991.2 manual GT3). Love you videos.

They indeed do. All Porsche HPDE cars are all Caymans now and on the occasion you see GT3 or RS they are driven by rich noobs that have all the money for MSRP+ and zero driving skills. It’s borderline criminal for what the cars are capable of. GT3 and RS are never tracked now since GT3 and RS are “Luxury” lifestyle cars now 😀

I started driving it like a bat out of hell on Day 1. I also own a 992 GT3 RS, 992 GT3 (manual), GT4 RS, 992 GT3 Cup, and an M3...but my Spyder RS may be my favorite.

I have a 992GT3 and just got my spyder RS. I love both with different characteristics..more wild sensation in GT3, and “elegant” in spyder RS!

Thanks for the great video! I am planning on swapping my Cayman GTS 4.0 for a Spyder RS as it is purely for the weekends nowadays. I’d love to keep the cayman but definitely can’t afford both. Never thought I’d swap it but the RS really is a very special car

These actually look great , hunkered down , low , with nice wheels , and in this spec with the yellow accent's...badass !! Although I'm a turbo guy the the GT3 engine is N/A legend. Being that 911's are the go-to ( rightly so ) , given the choice I'd have this , just to be different.......Good vid.

When I first watched this brilliant video my SRS was in production. Just got it and put 800 mi in first few days. It’s absolute masterpiece!!!! My manual touring sits on the lift and SRS gets driven. I put full Kline innovation exhaust and it’s even better

@Supercar Driver - could you possibly find out where the owner got the yellow Hood Pulls for as he has replaced the factory red - I have a car on order, very similar specification (different seats for an older person who will tour a bit more I suspect and also has a bad back!). Thanks

What an epic machine. I have the best of both worlds. A very highly speced 718 Boxster Spyder in manual and a GT4RS in PDK. Which is really the only way you can get one...!
One of the best Porsches ever made
I redlined mine several times at under 50 miles. Can't help it. Still going strong at 500 so it seems ok to do it.
I don't know which is more beautiful the roads or the car!
Own a 918S and love it. Next one will be the 718 GTS 4.0. I could never afford the Spyder RS but it’s not worth twice the price of the GTS in my opinion.

very nice review, indeed one of the best I have seen for this car. One urgent question if I may: I really like the racing yellow coloured straps (to lock/unlock the soft top). However, Porsche told me those can only be in red colour, which is not a good match with the rest of my config (lettering on doors/rear, belts, door handles, stitching), which I all ordered in racing yellow. Would you know if those yellow straps were factory built? I have not found how to set this option in the Porsche GB configurator. I expect my own car to be built in the next few weeks, so if I could still tell Porsche how to change this feature, that would be awesome.

Some might say you're wearing a fake Rolex and driving a fake porsche. Some people are stupid. All spyders are special, all of them from the 987 to the 718 RS. Its a thing in modern days to have the big name not the apparently lesser name. I'm lucky to have Rolex and Tudor, 911 and spyder. I wear my tudor and drive my boxster more becaus enjoy them more. The boxster is such a lovely drivers car, and completely different from a 911.

I have just seen now your comment, Dave - I raised the exact same question one hour ago, and I sent this VDO to Porsche (France) as an example for them to check this again! My config: Shark blue, no Weissach pack, all racing yellow (calipers, stitching, belts, lettering, door handles). Also asked if I could add the titanium exhaust pipes as an option (without the Weissach pack), Porsche is checking they are complient with each other.

You do the car justice while giving a well-deserved nod to the non-RS spyder.
The Spyder RS is a proper, (mostly) no holds barred ICE boxster send off. Corporate Porsche was never going to spend the $$$ on a manual transmission for a relatively short production run car. To be fair, that PDK is really very very special itself. I’m not sure a manual would be better, so much as another version of awesome. Speedster? What speedster?
I have a question, I'm looking to buy one here in China (at around £230,000), the model they have doesn't have the front axel lift and the porsche configurator says it has 79mm ground clearance which is much lower than any other GT or RS car, so I'm a bit concerned about the low ride height and scrapping the bottom of the car...does anyone have any thoughts on this? Is it an issue without the axel lift?
Depends on roads you will drive it on. If it was a track car like gt4 rs and you planned it to be trailer queen, then it would be ok without lift, but if you intend to drive it on public roads, I reckon you'll end up wanting to have that lift in many ocasions.
I really like (a lot of) sound... but this noise so close to the ear is a problem. More than 110 decibel !

Spyders NEED manual transmissions, period. Save the PDK for the Cayman GT4 RS. That’s why I will not get rid of my 981 Spyder.
But I am happy to learn people are beginning to realize what many of us have known all along: Porsches mid engine cars are better handling and more fun to drive than pretty much any 911.

I’m glad there’s a market out there for the Boxster, but just like TT, it’s not for me.
It’s the best looking model IMO..
They should’ve put targa tops (like the CGT) instead of the ugly & hard-to-put-on soft top. If they do that AND offer a manual, I’ll 100% buy one.
That top is part of the cool factor. Keeps it a hands on driving experience. Reminds me of my brother's MGA. Noisy windy and with knock off rims thin steering wheel and a mechanical hand's on top, like the Spyder.

Look, the Boxster is at least 60% 911, as far as parts. Biggest difference of course is physics- you can beat them. I’ll take a mid engined Porsche all day every day over a rear engined 911. I have a 981 S w X73 suspension, and will eventually have a Spyder, maybe the 981 for the lighter weight and rarity as well as being a more analog car.
