OUR QUESTION TO YOU… If back I the day, 50% of people had specced a MANUAL in these cars, would we have seen a manual option in their successors, the 458 and the Huracan?
Nope. Emissions and government regulations killed the manual transmission for these brands. They also got caught up in lap times and you can't beat the other with human error.
It’s a real pity that they don’t make them anymore. I had a gated manual 360 Spyder - what a car and I would have purchased a 458 Spyder had it been manual. Instead I now have a Porsche 718 Manual Spyder and have been offered a Spyder RS by my dealer - great engine but no manual - no deal. The 718 Spyder is a NASP mid engine (revs to 8k) drop top with a true manual. Name a company that was making a car that checks those boxes in the last 4 years - not Lambo, not Ferrari, not Lotus, not Audi, nothing from Japan, - no one - unless you are a small boutique or your name is Gordon Murray. The fact that Murray is building the ultimate sports car in the T-50 and T-33 that checks all these boxes screams louder than these cars in the video😎. I’ll never sell that 718 Spyder - no fancy tech (Rev matching can be turned off so you can heel and toe - switch gear is very basic - and real control knobs for heat, etc. - thank God - just you, an NASP engine behind your ears, a 3rd pedal, CF sports seats, and a gear lever - Motoring Nirvana! Thanks for video - enjoyed it.
I’m fortunate to own a low miles, silver, manual f430 with rare carbon bucket seats. I put it in storage when they discovered I had a Glioblastoma brain tumour and have not been allowed to it drive for 12 months. Fingers crossed I survive so I can drive it once again.
@@supercar.driver I live in north Leeds. She is stored at Italia Autosport, John Pogson, legendary classic Ferrari mechanic, so is meticulously cared for.
I had a ride in one last year from a rental company. Sadly they sold it, and replaced it with a California. It was a wonderful machine to drive, and to listen to. Reaching 150 mph felt so effortless in that thing. I wish you the best for your recovery.
I wish I still had mine I miss it, the sound the looks the feeling, I have a Huracan now and it’s not the same. It’s better car but my Gallardo will always be my favourite and to me it’s a better Lamborghini especially the pre LP with the 5L engine. I just wish they were more reliable.
Agreed! The 2000’s gave us the best combination to date of beautiful design, lightweight construction, high power, simplicity, sound, and quality engineering
I bought a manual V10 R8 spyder last month for the same reasons as the ones you’ve highlighted. It’s my first super(ish)car! The clunk click of the gearbox, while you heel toe is just the best. Especially when the roof is down and the heaters are blowing in this cold Yorkshire weather! Great video guys (as always)

All about the even firing 72* interval thanks to an 18* split pin crankshaft! Car needs an X-pipe for the sexy high pitch sound to come out as I’m certain that this one has that and probably a rear section exhaust too based on the sound (which is amazing)
I was driving towards Bala when they were filming this, stopped at the layby where they were parked and being interested had a chat, very friendly and enthusiastic. Didn't know about the channel but the guy driving the yellow Lambo very informative and I've been waiting for this film to surface. Was amazed at the quality of production, well done 👍
Two great analogue supercars with manual gearboxes. The noughties is my favourite decade for cars with cars like the Gallardo, 430, 996/997 GT3's, E46 M3 CSL and analogue hypercars like the Pagani Zonda, Carerra GT & Ford GT. Most of the modern stuff with all the tech and flappy paddles just bores me.
I love both of them. Each have unique characteristics. It’s like choosing a favorite child, impossible. While my F430 is F1, the experience is extremely exciting. But the manual Gallardo, that’s pure bliss. The V10 howl is intoxicating.
Thanks for this. I've been having a bit of a knock-down-drag-out with our '04 manual Gallardo, chasing some hesitation and funky idle behavior. Some amazing footage in this one to remind me that there's light...and V10 noises at the other end of the hours in the garage. Having said that, while they are starting to have "old car problems" they're also surprisingly simple to work on, which shouldn't be overlooked when rating this era of car.
Well done chaps, this episode did not disappoint. We are lucky to have a manual 430 and a manual Murcielago in our fleet, both amazing, much loved cars. Couldn’t agree more with your comments and great to see Adam putting in a shift on the channel. 👋😍
The pops and flames from that Gallardo are insane. The 5.0L V10 can be delicate, but maintain it correctly and it will reward you with that sound. The PreLP Gallardo is Lamborghini enough to be exciting, but Audi enough to be reliable and easy to work on.
I have an 08 F430 spyder. I do have the F1, but it works so much better than earlier years as they improved it around 08. Mine shifts beautifully. I’ve owned previous year Ferrari’s with manual for 20 years. Honestly, I’m sick of all that shifting. Plus, something is going on in my knee that feels awful when pushing in a clutch over and over. For some reason I personally feel that the spyder looks so much better than the coupe. It’s so low and sleek looking. The rear view is awesome. When it came time to buy, I didn’t even consider the Lambo. Ferrari is simply the car I always lusted over.
Excellent review and agree with all points stated. I own a factory gated 430 with a Capristo headers and Race Level 3 exhaust and it’s as you stated, peak analog. I’ve driven many of the new F and L cars, especially the latest high horse hybrid cars and they do nothing for me. Too smooth and not engaging. The only new modern Supercar I love and have is an STO. Lamborghini knocked its out of the park when they made it. Even Valentino Balboni shared with me it’s the best performing Lamborghini ever produced. Cheers
Two manual beauties! 😍 I respect the 458 a lot, but I prefer the F430 because of it looks and its much more raw sound... The 5.0 Gallardo is a bit less pretty than the LP560 to me, but its 5.0 sounded GLORIOUS! 🎻
9:45 one should notice, that the F430 has a major designflaw with the Headers and thus makes installing the Capristos necessary. Anyways great Review that highlights 2 icons of the time who havent lost one bit of their thrill.
Great to get these two together, and lovely scenery and great drone shots. In my opinion, the Gallardo V10 engine is fantastic but running costs prohibitively expensive. The interiors also don't age very well. A manual 430 is beautiful, but the steering isn't quite sharp enough. In addition, a manual F430 costs £130,000 upwards. For that money I would prefer a green or orange manual Porsche 997 GT3 RS or I would save up and buy a Performante, which is one of the best supercars ever made (even though it's not a manual).
I also love the 00’s - an age of analogue cars that were fast, but still had to be driven. I’m lucky enough to own various cars from the 00’s (Clio182, Megane RS, Impreza STI) and my gen1 R8 V8 MT. All offer very different driver involvement that reward and delight at every opportunity that makes them special compared to the latest, modern, tech heavy, digital and often remote feeling cars. Fast they may be, but I’ll trade a few tenths for a lot more involvement.
This was truly a fantastic time for high-end sports cars, analog enough to give you fun and have you drive the car and not the other way around, yet smart enough not to get you killed. Today’s cars they’re so advanced! They’re so robotic and they’re so bulbous because of aerodynamics, that they are just simply bland and boring. Sure you can go fast as hell, but what’s the point on going so fast in a straight line, because yet inside it feels like you’re in Bentley. God bless the cars of the late 90s and early 2000s ❤
2002 to 2012 was my favorite era of super car hero’s I would take any one of these cars in the video for sure . I have a NA audi tt vr6 manual transmission and my GF has the NA r8 v8 gated trans and it’s a joy to drive . Some newer cars I have driven are faster but doesn’t have the overall drivability. 🙃
Last reply wasn’t me but this one is! Yes I remember you! Hope you’re keeping well? Aren’t we like half-cousins as well or something? I remember you being down at the old Wath Station when it still existed!!
Best super car era wasn't the 90s, it was 2000-2010. They actually finally became somewhat reliable. Ferrari; 360 CS, 458, F12 Lambo: Gallardo, Murci Ford: Ford GT Nissan: GTR Porsche: GT series etc... etc...
Fantastic video with two great supercars! The F430 is one of my all-time favourites. On the other hand, i'd like to correct a little mistake what you said in the video. The last N/A V8 Ferrari with manual gearbox was the California!
Congratulations for this project, it would be a dream for the most subscribers of your channel. If you finally choose the blue interior go for the CS stripe option, it will match perfectly the racing history of Ferrari, with the most radical CS option. If you choose tan interior the two options will be nice.
Lovely video! These 2 are so iconic and more than quick enough for most drivers… so elegant and almost understated compared to the Supercars of today. If the Gallardo was in black or grey, it’s actually quite subtle… I’d argue the F430 has more road presence with it’s larger footprint and more pronounced air intakes on the shoulders. Manettino paved the way for our obsession with driver modes, but I think we’ve taken it too far with countless possible configurations between the power, TC and gearbox settings… too much choice isn’t always best!
I own two 3 LP Lamborghinis….one is a Gallardo gated manual. 1/59. I cannot possibly agree with you more!!! That’s why I’ve spent over $170,000 to rebuild/improve my car.
I get that the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini and even Corvettes no longer offer manual transmission, but they could at least give us a shift lever for the auto like Pagani does instead of just leaving us stuck with the flappy paddles. You'd think if you are going to pay house money for a performance car you'd have more than one option on how to shift the dual clutch... And the technology race is cool, but it would be nice if these manufacturers started to offer entry-level cars of a more analog flavor with less pomp and frills without so much emphasis on wanting the driver to feel like they're in a formula 1 or WEC car.
Masterpieces, both of them! The first gen Gallardo has aged beautifully, and what a howl! Sad that nothing like that will ever be made again (not counting the T. 50, and alike). Sure, the GR Yaris with a tune will outrun both, and can be specced with a MT, but it will never be a sleek wedge with open pipes to a high-revving NA.😢
EAG Converted F430 owner here, absolutely love the car as a manual, although to answer the question, I still feel that the 458 and on would end up with 2 pedals only regardless if the 3 pedal 430 production numbers were higher.
One of the very few that hasn’t been spoilt by average cameras yet, so hopefully nobody lets slip what the road is! Soon as it becomes popular and the idiots in hatch backs get wind, it’ll end up ruined like the evo triangle etc
The two cars you are testing here are definitely not representative of how the Gallardo and the F430 sounded during their entire production span, at least not in other markets. At least in Germany, the early F430 were extremely loud. So loud that nobody would think of installing an aftermarket exhaust unless he was after a totally different sound. In contrast, the early Gallardos had way too little, almost no sound.
As a kid in the early 2000s the Gallardo was my favorite car for a long time. The 2nd gen was all around better in every way but it just didn’t have the same level of “exotic” factor
F430 is an easy winner for me. Also, the last NA v8 Ferrari with a manual gearbox is a California and as for the 458 having a manual or not, let's just say the dct suits it more.
Can you upload all of those fly by videos without the talking so we can enjoy the sweet exhaust sounds, thanks Also the camera work is very nice, peak 00's supercars indeed
The Perfect Gallardo ( if You can find one) is the LP550-2 Valentino Balboni special edition manual with RWD ONLY! One can dream and hope to find one one day...
The Gallardo for me , I love the v10 sound and I think the styli g has aged extremely well . Can I ask what road you filmed this on , it looks stunning ?
These two cars tested are many years away from the analogue experience of the cars that made Ferrari especially great, but also Lamborghini at speeds below 70mph on roads, and are very large and wide and low cars, especially the F430, on very narrow profile tyres, making them unsuitable for my very tight English backroads where they would take up half the other carriageway or for the potholed roads of England where despite the Ferrari's switchable suspension settings are uncomfortable having been in both; only the 430 Scuderia let you put bumpy road mode on at same time as race, but it is also very hard riding. The last really Analogue cars from Ferrari which catered for European roads were those produced in the 70s/80s with the mondial/308/328 and 365BB/512/BB; the last real Lamborghini pair were the Jalpa and the Countach though the latter was more a statement car with the Gallardos engine designed by Audi with Audi design internals, long way away from the ITalian engineering of the cars under Ferrucio and whose head engineers were Giotto Lamborghini who designed the v12, the only carryover part to their v12 cars until the Murcielago and then after Giulio Alfieri until mid 80s
I've owned both the manual F430 spider and a 458 Italia. I can say that I believe the 458 is really the transition car from analog to digital and strikes the best of both worlds not to mention the design of the 458 is timeless. If I had to choose between the two, it would be the 458.
Personally having driven a Gallardo on track it left me a bit cold tbh. It just felt like a quick Audi TT. Looked and sounded awesome but not very involving..The 360 i drove on the other hand was sublime in comparison..
I have to say, although I'm a lifelong Porsche nut who's been lucky enough to enjoy a good few miles behind the wheel of a Mk2 996 GT3, if I had to choose one car to enjoy for the rest of my life, it would be a manual F430. That being said, money no object, a 458 Speciale would be hard to ignore.
To be fully correct, the last naturally aspirated, manually gated Ferrari was not the F430 but the Ferrari California MY 2009/10! Although only 6 were built in total, it is the last Ferrari (and the last naturally aspirated at the same time) to be sold with a manual gearbox.
Possibly, possibly not. By the 2010s the power and torque was becoming such that a manual gearbox wouldn’t have been able to cope any more. Porsche had a lot of customers upset when the turbo became PDK only, but Porsche couldn’t add more performance with a manual. Additionally cars like the F12 effectively were designed from the ground up with dual clutch transmission in mind, with no packaging for a clutch pedal really possible, additionally other factors like emissions control also killed the manual in addition to no one outside of Porsche or Aston Martin customer bases wanting a manual.
A manual wouldnt have been able to cope with the power?! And yet a DCT would? Even though they are the same fundamentally? We all know why they dont offer manuals anymore. Number 1, most buyers are just buying these to show off their success. Its their right to do so dont get me wrong. Number 2, since they would only sell a few manuals, it doesnt worth it for the manufacturers to offer them
@@horvathr95 The original comment isn't worded properly, shifting gears manually in a high horsepower car is a demanding job because everything happens at a faster rate compared to a low horsepower car and this prevents the driver from enjoying the shifts each time, given manufacturers are upping the horsepower in their cars every year, you don't have to worry that much with a DCT and if the transmission is married properly to the engine, then it can be enjoyable to a certain extent.
@@powerslider30477 then it’s just simply skill issue. Carrera GT, Koenigsegg CCR, Pagani Zondas, they were all manuals and yet had 600hp+. Nowadays even cars that have way less then that come with dct only. Example being the Alfa 4c, Giulia QV or a Golf R
@@horvathr95 You know the Carrera GT is a very demanding car to drive and how many really drives any of those cars, those are mostly looked at as an investment and a DCT would improve drivability tremendously in those cars. Porsche knew how the 997 GT2 RS was a demanding car to drive and that's why they made its successor PDK only. A manual is best enjoyable with about 500hp or max 550hp, those are true driver's cars and people actually put miles on them. And you wrote about three cars but drive something like a BRZ or a GT86 and those would be nearly as engaging to drive as those high horsepower cars you cited, if not more.
F430 is my first favorite car, but after learning Lamborghini in elementary days, I know now how change of hearts feels. But FERRARI tho, incredible in their very own ways.
When my Dad had a 550M and then a Barchetta, I would lust over the F430 as a 15/16 year old when we’d go to Stratstone in Wilmslow. I’m now 36 and would pick an F430 over any Ferrari if given half the chance now.
I much prefer the manual options in these and, where available, in more modern stuff too. These cars are for fun and automatics I feel just make many cars just a point and shoot event.
I was fortunate enough to commandeer my father’s 2000 Ferrari 550 Maranello (titanium with red guts) as an adolescent. As an adult, I mercifully store it in my own garage LOL. Still enjoy taking her out. That gated manual and scalpel-like steering precision, the nearly instant torque of that naturally aspirated V12 and looks that supermodels can’t compare to… But supercars made back then were made less reliable and crap warranties compared to the predictable, huge barges that supercars have become today. Today’s supercars can be driven by grandmothers. Take the good with the bad.
OUR QUESTION TO YOU…

The sounds these cars make makes my hairs stand up, brilliant video.
Glad you like them! Sooo special
Congratulations for this project, it would be a dream for the most subscribers of your channel.
If you finally choose the blue interior go for the CS stripe option, it will match perfectly the racing history of Ferrari, with the most radical CS option.
If you choose tan interior the two options will be nice.
😂
Lovely video! These 2 are so iconic and more than quick enough for most drivers… so elegant and almost understated compared to the Supercars of today. If the Gallardo was in black or grey, it’s actually quite subtle… I’d argue the F430 has more road presence with it’s larger footprint and more pronounced air intakes on the shoulders. Manettino paved the way for our obsession with driver modes, but I think we’ve taken it too far with countless possible configurations between the power, TC and gearbox settings… too much choice isn’t always best!
Agree, let’s celebrate the Manettino as it’s enough but the new cars have definitely taken it too far! The Gallardo by comparison has no modes!
I own two 3 LP Lamborghinis….one is a Gallardo gated manual. 1/59. I cannot possibly agree with you more!!! That’s why I’ve spent over $170,000 to rebuild/improve my car.
Awesome 🙌
Absolutely stunning video 👌
Thank you very much!
An Awesome video comparing 2 dream cars. For me it would have to be the gallardo.. that gated shifter and V10 👌
The best!
Porsches of this era though ❤
Ikr ❤
Sublime
Porsche of any era
@ what’s your favorite?
This video is a masterpiece
Thank you ☺️
Presenter in the Ferrari is great ❤
😬😘
Masterpieces, both of them! The first gen Gallardo has aged beautifully, and what a howl! Sad that nothing like that will ever be made again (not counting the T. 50, and alike). Sure, the GR Yaris with a tune will outrun both, and can be specced with a MT, but it will never be a sleek wedge with open pipes to a high-revving NA.😢
EAG Converted F430 owner here, absolutely love the car as a manual, although to answer the question, I still feel that the 458 and on would end up with 2 pedals only regardless if the 3 pedal 430 production numbers were higher.
I drive a 996.2 GT3 Clubsport. An absolut masterpiece 👌
Oh yes 👏
2 amazing cars, love those open gate gear boxes and the roads and scenery match the machines. Where in North Wales was this filmed?
Yes they are 👍🙌
One of the very few that hasn’t been spoilt by average cameras yet, so hopefully nobody lets slip what the road is!
Couldn’t agree more. Having a manual R8 v10, you know how I feel.
And I’d take the Lambo.
The 458 with a manual would have been the perfect super car. The engine, looks and involvement.
Nice choice 👍
That is how a V10 should sound! The OG Gallardo sounds way better than the LP Gallardos. We need more even firing V10 supercars!
We do!!
Quality Contend and videography thanks Guys ..... Especially not using the Action camera type shooting
Thanks for watching 🙌
Still one of the best cars!
They really are!
I have a gated manual pre-lp and I must admit there's not much that comes close to the feeling of shifting at the top of the rev range.
Couldn’t agree more 🙌
Glad I was alive and old enough to witness these great designs when new. Even getting to drive them!
Nice man!
Well done Adam, great review. I love driving our F430 Spider manual, for all the reasons you mentioned. So....F430 manual or Scuderia?
They’re both so special and worlds apart! Thanks for watching Rob
My top 2 dream cars in 1 video. Hopefully I can get either of them one day.
You’d be happy with either 🙌
As a kid in the early 2000s the Gallardo was my favorite car for a long time. The 2nd gen was all around better in every way but it just didn’t have the same level of “exotic” factor
Nothing beats the original imo
Great shout Jonty. 👏
F430 is an easy winner for me. Also, the last NA v8 Ferrari with a manual gearbox is a California and as for the 458 having a manual or not, let's just say the dct suits it more.
you’re right the California was the last manual…but they only made 1 in RHD so unavalable
Another fantastic car that came from this was was the 911 Turbo. It had an engine derived from the GT1 le Mans race winning cars.
Can you upload all of those fly by videos without the talking so we can enjoy the sweet exhaust sounds, thanks
Also the camera work is very nice, peak 00's supercars indeed
Great group of cars, and car models I group with instead of the 488 or Huracan. One car that is missing is the Audi R8 as well.
Video coming soon 👀
Yes!!! 😊👏🏾@@supercar.driver
Soon 2 be absolute supercar classics!
at least, those were the best looking lamborghinis. since than, they took those as a base and just added things, like decorating a christmas tree.
The Perfect Gallardo ( if You can find one) is the LP550-2 Valentino Balboni special edition manual with RWD ONLY! One can dream and hope to find one one day...
That would be cool! Have driven one before, they’re sublime
The Gallardo for me , I love the v10 sound and I think the styli g has aged extremely well .
Can I ask what road you filmed this on , it looks stunning ?
Both amazing cars and somehow already classics with the perfect blend.
🙌🙌
owned an LP560 Spyder for 4 years, fantastic car and extremely reliable
Awesome! What colour?
In the constant pursuit of always going faster following ever changing emission standards sacrifices have to be made
I've owned both the manual F430 spider and a 458 Italia.
Manual DBS, dream car
Nice 👌
To be fully correct, the last naturally aspirated, manually gated Ferrari was not the F430 but the Ferrari California MY 2009/10! Although only 6 were built in total, it is the last Ferrari (and the last naturally aspirated at the same time) to be sold with a manual gearbox.
OK fair comment, but not mass produced in a car that is actually appealing and a drivers car :)
What's the connection with emissions control and manual gearbox?
Both so great
What happened to Jonty’s banana Ferrari, thought that was his baby. 😁
😬🤣
Maby 20 years old, but that gallardo still turns heads. I'm drove it a couple of times, but damm it a brute to drive but it keep you smiling.
It sure does 😁
When my Dad had a 550M and then a Barchetta, I would lust over the F430 as a 15/16 year old when we’d go to Stratstone in Wilmslow. I’m now 36 and would pick an F430 over any Ferrari if given half the chance now.
Nice 👌
I much prefer the manual options in these and, where available, in more modern stuff too. These cars are for fun and automatics I feel just make many cars just a point and shoot event.
Exactly!!
These early gallardos sounded so much better!
Don’t they just?!
Black Gallardo dream car, one day💪
