Military history buff here, for most of their history Dragoons weren't actually cavalry but Mounted Infantry. They'd ride to where they needed to be then dismount and fight on foot. At least now we know why the Dragonrider doesn't ride a Dragon.
love the idea that those guys would have shown up to battle riding a whole ass dragon then gotten off of it to fight with their Halberts
i guess that make the pursuer a mounted infantry since he get carried around by a bird but fight alone
9:05 Freya is a genus of jumping spider named after a Norse goddess whose name is sometimes spelled as Freyja, which is probably the spelling Fureidia was trying to invoke.
The translators may have avoided the use of the phrase "Rat King" in English because the phrase actually has a different meaning! Rat-king is the phrase used to describe a group of rats whose tails have become so tangled that they're all stuck to each other: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat_king this page also says the term is used similarly to "leech", in reference to lazy people who live off the hard work of others. The translators may have wanted to avoid this implication, as the rats in this story are somewhat of an oppressed underclass instead, reviled by surface dwellers. Just an interesting tidbit!
I think there is some sense in adding "dear" to "Duke's Dear Freja." I think it removes any ambiguity as to whether or not Freja is the name of the singular spider, or refers to a type of spider. My personal intuition is that hearing something along the lines of "I killed the Duke's Freja" could be misconstrued as referring to one member of a group of Frejas, while adding the Duke's *Dear* Freja makes it seem much more clear that it's referring to a singular, modified proper name referring to one specific individual.
It's a fairly minor thing but yeah I'm willing to go to bat for that translation choice.
"Looking glass" is an older word for "mirror", cf. the sequel to Alice in Wonderland, "Through the Looking-glass"
I always saw the Pursuer as the same one every single time. Being a "curse" or "binding" makes sense, as it seems the Pursuer is cursed to hunt you down wherever you may go. He is the curse bound to you. Or perhaps he is cursed to to follow you.
I think it's definitely supposed to be the same one

For the name "Shalquoir", I think it can come from "chaleur" (warmth) and it kinda makes sense because it's the only npc who isn't aggressive towards the player.
And she's a cat with a pretty fluffy coat so she's probably able to keep herself warm lol
Interestingly, the french version of the game restored the correct translation of the Lost Sinner while everything is generally based on english localization. It also makes more sense for french.

Looking Glass Knight is a reference to Alice in Wonderland where she travels to a strange world through a mirror or "looking glass"
No it isnt. Miyazaki specifically said he was inspired by a trip home depot where he saw a mirror made to go above your bed

yeah "The Defiled Queen" has some pretty heavy implications in English I can definitely see why they didn't want to go for it.
Seriously, "Defiled Queen" would sound gross in an entirely different way than what was intended.
Yeah I think "The Corrupt Queen" sounds better for me, it has this quality of saying that the mind or the soul is the one that is impure
On "Scorpioness": An old fantasy novel definitely would have used terms like "scorpioness" and "man-scorpion", so if the aim was to give the game a retro-fantasy feel, these gendered titles are on-theme. Although this specific usage doesn't feel that authentic because "scorpioness" doesn't scan as a well-formed latinate word to me. Generally you have to drop or reorder the last consonant when adding "-ess". And mixing the germanic "man-" prefix with the latin-derived "-ess" suffix also doesn't seem like something that a fantasy author going for an archaic feel would have done.
Smough's name using a less official version of Executioner could be a reference to Smough aspiring to knighthood but being refused because of his habit of eating his victims, thus being an unofficial executioner.
The name of the royal rat authority always seemed a bit odd to me, thanks for the explanation in japanese it makes a lot more sense. Funnily enough in the german translation they got it about half right. In german it is called "Königlicher Rattenprüfer" which can be understood in two ways: I can mean that the boss is tasked (by a king or some royal authority) to test rats but it can also mean that the boss is a rat that is royal in some sense and is meant to test something or someone. So the second meaning is in a way a bit more correct then the english translation because it incorporates the aspect of a trial or a test much more directly. ("Prüfung" is test in german) So its not 100% correct because the "Royal"/"Königlich" in the translation is still a bit misleading because it doesnt directly point to the rat king himself but seems to imply that the boss itself is royal.

I think what they were going for with Royal Rat Vanguard was to imply this was the Vanguard of the Royal Rat, or Royal Rat's Vanguard. and given that the guy in the next room is The Royal Rat it always made sense to me. although Vanguard implies an advancing force ahead of the main army, dispite the Royal Rat Vanguard being defensive in nature. I can only assume they chose Royal Rat for the alliteration
I think both Royal Rat bosses were supposed to be possessives, like Royal Rat's Authority and Royal Rat's Vanguard, but somebody messed up and forgot that part. Although Royal Rat's Authority makes it sound like the big dog is an enforcer rather than a test.
I only speak English but “Dunashandra” sounds VERY different to simply “Nashandra” to me. The original name sounds vaguely celtic to my ear but as I said I only speak English. Nashandra sounds fancy but like it could be an English or French name to me. Maybe one belonging to an aristocrat.
I feel like Nashandra draws heavily from the name Kassandra who was a character in ancient greek mythology. She was a seer just like Nashandra or Dunashandra. Kassandra saw that the Athenians would come up with the trojan horse and Nashandra warned Vendrik of the giants. But I'm fabulating. :D
I want to guess and say that the "lost Sinner" is named that way since she has been "lost by history" and forgotten about, but it definitely is a rather strange word choice to use.
The RRAuthority's name is definitely a strange one, but I want to say maybe it is because of the much older meaning of the word as "official sanction" according to etymonline. Like the boss fight itself is the "order of the Rat King", and beating it shows you completed what he asked of you. Honestly though that is rather a stretch...
Same with Looking Glass Knight, as mirrors in ye olde england were called "Looking glasses" at some points in time. Like in Alice in wonderland's sequel, where she entered a "looking glass" to return to wonderland
For Najka and her husband, i definitely think the change is due to how unnatural calling them "The Scorpion X/Y" is. They aren't "true" scorpions, but scorpion-like creatures, so adding the man- and -ness implies that they are "scorpion-like" but not actual scorpions you would see outside in the real world. It lines up with the small nuances you mentioned worked quite well,
I am just as confused about Freja as you are, but I suspect the "dear" was added in because several items talk about how the Duke had a fascination with spiders, and treated Freja very specially. "Duke's pet Freja" or just "Duke's Freja" wouldn't really get across how this guy's interest in spiders was strange even by DS standards. She was dearer to him than anything else, and is that interst likely led to all the spider-problems the area has in someway.
With elena, I think the reason they chose Squalid, is because that word gives the air of "grimy and mucky" filth, something thick and hard to remove compared to just "covered in dirt and filth", showing how she doesn't want to clean herself. From what I understand of the word Kegare, it is impurity specifically caused by stagnation, so I think squalid is a word that fits, as it gives the impression that she has been sitting there at the bottom of the world, stagnating and growing ever more filthy and defiled due to both the dark of humanity, and the poison of Sinh
Similarly Slumbering is good for Sihn, as it refers to the period of sleep where you are not dreaming, implying that it is a light sleep. Which he did just fly past players not too long ago, showing he isn't really that deep in his sleep. Same with Fume, as fumes specifically are something dangerous to inhale, so "fume knight" makes him sound far more threatening by name alone. It's really tiny details, but greatly changes the context compared to using "Sleeping dragon" or "smoke knight"
For the Duke's Dear Freja, the change from Freidia to Freja makes sense when you look at the mythological reference. Frida, or sometimes Freid is a derivation of the name Freyja, belonging to a popular Scandinavian goddess. It seems probable to me that the name was originally conceived as a reference to the goddess, and that the English localization team changed it to Freja so that it would be more recognizable.
I think something like "Executor of Exile" (or, if you wanna get silly, "Expulsor") would have worked better for the Flexile Sentry!
If I had to guess I'd say they used Old Dragonslayer, one word, instead of Old Dragon Slayer to emphasize that the dragon slayer himself is old, not that he's just a slayer of old dragons
As a Polish player after watching this video I realized one thing: The Polish version is NOT translated from the Japanese version, but from English. The Pursuer, Flexile Sentry, Scorpioness Najka, Duke's Dear Freja... they were translated to Polish, not the original boss' names
Same thing with the Hungarian translation
I think dormant -> slumbering is a really accurate localization! Latin “Dorm-“ is usually tied to sleep and rest
I think that Royal is an adjective that relates to Vanguard, not Rat. So it’s a royal vanguard of rats
I felt like with the "Royal Rat" compared to "Rat King's" thing, it could have been to not confuse it with the term "Rat King" referring to a bunch of rats tied together by their tails, but for some reason the faction leader is still called the Rat King anyways, so it just seems confusing lol

Prowling is a fine word to use in place of the original. It has a hunting connotation but is a synonym to wandering or searching, just more sinister.
6:56 in the german version of the game the Royal Rat Authority is called "Königlicher Rattenprüfer" wich translates pretty smoothly into "Royal Rat Tester"
This tells me that it was translatet directly from Japanese and not English. Didn't know that jet. :D
On the topic of Elana, I've always been curious about the line she says when you start fighting her: 'Huh, you were not deserving of the mire...'
There's no real context for it I can understand in the DLC, so it makes me think some context was lost.

I happen to have all dialogue scripts so I found the line you're referring to:
「穢れにふさわしい者ではないか」- "You are not worthy of/suitable for the kegare". "Kegare" is the word Elana has in her name - 穢れの女王 [kegare no joo:], Kegare Queen. The word 穢れ refers to uncleanliness, impurity and defilement, but it is also a religious Shinto term. "Kegare" is a state of pollution that occurs when one comes in contact with death, disease, violent acts or even childbirth. There are purification rituals and various precautions assosiated with the state of kegare.
In the context of Elana, I think, she became the Kegare Queen once Sinh spewed poison all around the city and left it devastated. As I see it, this counts as "contact with death/disease". Another question is why Elana evaluates you as being deserving/undeserving of this state of defilement. Maybe you're unworthy/not suitable because you're an outsider and you weren't here when all those events took place.

What I find interesting mostly about the Throne of Want is that, generally the use of the word thirst or desire has some sort of greater reason or purpose behind it.
A need for water is immediately implied with Thirst, but equally could be a need for something to alleviate a weakness or discomfort.
Desire brings to mind a driving need to express affection for something or someone, but can be used both positively and negatively dependent on context.
But they're usually targeted towards something in particular.
Want in its literal sense is the more base non-descript lacking of something from which all other terms are derived, and also the craving to obtain quite simply anything that would fill that absence.

i have crazy ideas about Shalquir name. it could be made partly as anagram and strange/franch sounding word - for "Sha" as "ash" and as well meaning young/fresh as "sha". including "quoi" as "who". l and r as fillings for it makes is more franch.
This points out a lot of what people think is lacking in DS2. There's a lot of stuff that looks like ds1, but isn't as deep or thoughtful. It's also a ton of things that are very similar to one another.
Stumble across this amazing channel because I cannot wrap my head around the text translation for "Nashandra" in my native language having an extra "Du" sound.(Yet the English voiced line just use "Nashandra")

@@shetanislair Yeah, it's Chinese and it's translated as "杜娜湘卓". Chinese localization is translated straight from Japanese text so I guess it's that.
It's also kinda interesting that Dark Souls series only have official English dub(that I know of, Bloodborne and Sekiro have Japanese dub.)
So the exact creation process is also a fascinating part.(Like what comes first? The voiced English lines or the English localization.)
@@simonshephard3834 Oh yeah. Sometimes I think 'well, this must have been conceived in English first' and other times I think "was it in Japanese first, and then localized??' The process of text and name creation in DS is a mystery
About those three from the Crown of The Sunken King, I always refer to them as "Worshipers of the Dead", which is the name of the original soundtrack that play at their boss fight. Great video!
4:25 “FL-EXILE Sentry”?!? If this was done knowingly by the translators then this has to be the most felicitous translation the world has ever seen! Mind blown.
The Pursuer always gave me the feeling that the armor were mostly compelled through either spirit or magic, such as a curse/bond. much less any semblance of "someone" in carrying out it's supposed task. might make sense as to their ability to levitate
Obviously that Cursuer was bounded by Dunasandra to search and kill, and maybe test hollows to found the Chosen One, who overcome the Cursuer and will help Queen reach the Throne.

My theory on why nashadra was cut from dunashandra was to get 'na' in every queen name, possibly for references in Sanskrit and possibly some subsets of Buddhism.

I think they gendered man scorpion and scorpioness because they wanted to emphasize they are half-humans. As "human scorpion" would be truly weird, they decided to put man scorpion and scorpioness. It would probably be better to call them "Half-scorpion Tark" and "Half-scorpion Najka"

Hmm that explanation for the Giant's kinship was very interesting. It doesn't make much sense for the throne to be so small if it belonged to the giants but... I still think you are right on the money
At first glance it seems small, but look up that ending on RUclips after you read this. You can see a smaller, human-sized throne carved into the bigger one. I think Vendrick or whoever took it from the giants then carved a smaller seat into the existing throne.

It seems like pursuer would have benefitted from the word geas. In Irish myth, the geas is a sort of curse that compels you to do a task, usually as an atonement or punishment for something. The term has been popularised by tabletop roleplaying games like D&D.

Using "dragoon" to describe the dragonrider sounds like a pun
I think that due to it's description and direct translation The Pursuer might be named as The Undead Curse.
I think Freja is fine, if you read the katakana somewhat fast it becomes Freidjia which is really close to Freyja if you read it with the ж (dj) sound instead of the й (y) like in Norse languages (you know what I mean).
So you're telling me that the Giant's Kingship (kyoijin kyo:mei) can be translated to Titan's Rumbling? OMG Dark souls and Attack on Titan are connected!!!
I feel for Frejdia, being the only Frejdyn and all (same sound as Frejdia).
Norsemen traded steel with Persians (Damascus folding in some Viking swords). Danes (more so with Icelanders) seemed to roll Persian "Frayadun" or "Frayadin" in with the twins Frejr, Freja.

A “rat king” already has meaning in English and it is not a king of rats.
A rat king occurs when a mischief of rats gets their tails tangled together and they get stuck together.

9:33 This might actually be another quietly awesome translation: they took the ディア(dia) out of フレイディア(freydia) and made it “ディア フレイ(ア)” (“dear Frey(a)”)…? Maybe? 🤔
So about the royal rat, I think the translation team were trying to avoid calling it the rat king. Rat king has a very specific meaning in English, a group of rats whose tails are stuck together. I think seeing a big rat named rat king without that imagery might have been seen as needlessly confusing
Actually the thing Vendrick stole from the Giants were the Giants themselves, at least that's what the English description of the Giant Lord's soul says. Since the Giants have some connection to the Dragons, Vendrick kidnaped some and gave them to Aldia for experimentation. We even see a pile of dead giants in Aldia's Keep, and the Ancient Dragon and Guardian Dragons were likely also created by Aldia from these giants. Vendrick himself used some of the Giants to build the butthole faced golems, which constructed the castle.
The Throne of Want is better explained in DS3. It's just like one of the thrones you have to deposit the Lord's Cinders into. Nashandra says Vendrick didn't ascend the throne (didn't become a real monarch, something like that), which is why he never linked the fire (although I wonder how he'd have sat in the throne considering he's about as tall as the Giant Lord). The Thrones are some kind of teleportation device that takes humans to the Kiln of the First Flame. It's likely Nashandra wanted Vendrick to "usurp the flame," like the Londor ending we can get in DS3. That's why she needed to find a monarch to sit on the throne, she was hoping she'd be able to follow us there and convince us to consume the flame.
As to why becoming in tune with the Giants is necessary to ascend the throne, that's because the Butthole Faced Golems won't form the bridge until you have the Kinship, so it seems to me like all you need the Kinship for is controlling the Golems.
On the matter of the Pursuer - I suspect that the translator couldn't come up with a good English translation for jubakusha, so instead wanted to evoke what the Pursuer does, that is to say, hunt the undead. But for whatever reason, the translator did not wish to use hunter and instead went with something that is close in meaning, but sadly not quite there.
Personally, I would have gone with something like "Repentant Adversary", based on his description (atoning for past sins = Repentant) and being a reoccurring threat to the player and undead in general (Adversary).
Though it seems that From decided that Curse Ward is a more appropriate translation for jubakasha, so I guess he should really be called "Curse Ward Knight."
How about 'bearer of the curse'?
I think "Squalid" works well for Elana because of the way "Defiled" typically ends up with a strangely sexual connotation when used on a person in English, and especially in the context of women. It often has overtones of non-consent and shame.
It's kind of a loaded term in that context, so Squalid Queen ends up conveying the concept of Kegare better Defiled here, and pretty much *only* here.
Any chance you could pick Demons Souls to compare names too?
I don't think the "Royal" in Royal Rat Authority/Vanguard refers to the "Rat" part of the name, but to the Rat King directly (not as in the King is "the Royal Rat"). In other words: It's not they are the Authority/Vanguard of the "Royal Rat" (aka Rat King), but they are the Authority/Vanguard of Royalty (the King or Kings house) and they are also rats, or simpler: They are "Rat Authority/Vanguard" of the Royalty (=the King). The "Rat" part of the name is just a descriptive element of their species, because they are rats. Like (irl) a Royal Guard could also be called a "Royal Human Guard", but since the "human" part is generally a given you don't need that descriptive element.
Man-Scorpion doesn't refer to the gender but to the fact that it's half human and half scorpion, a mashup

Japanese people deciding that the Lost Sinner is a woman because in English they used “she” sounds an awful lot like what English speakers do with the Japanese if they’re not thinking critically enough about the translation

Shalquoir sounds like a mashup of Shalltear from Overlord and Ulquiorra from bleach
A very interesting perspective. Overlord has undead and knights and such, and Bleach involves souls and hollows.

@Shetani's Lair yeah thats fair. Your current stuff is plenty good as is, no worries. It's very interesting to hear the occassional russian side of things too. As i feel like the non english non japanese language translations tend to be rarely mentioned outside of videos in their own language.
I recently watched a korean guy (budda-something) speedrun DS2 all bosses and, having learned Korean, I was quite bemused by the translation's different literal meaning in English. Bemused further am I at the similarity at both the similar sound and meaning of the Japanese and Korean translation.

В английском это передали нормально, потому как слово "Squalid" по большей части относилось не к самой Элане, а к месту обитания - город затопленный ядом, ака топь. Что вполне хорошо передаётся в её словах глав герою. Ну и тогда на русском её можно было бы перевести как "Элана, Королева Топи".

You know that when something is, "lost", it can be forgotten about. There is a reason why the concept of "lost and forgotten" exists. Bear in mind in a similar sense why places can have a "lost and found", for people who forgot about the item, and 'lost' it.

@@gamongames "Lost Sinner" is definitely less verbose than "Forgotten Sinner" if it is as simple as the localizers wanting something succinct. One syllable vs three.

“Al” in Arabic means “The”, so if it’s really Arabic then the name is Dia, The Dia.
The closet thing to Dia in Arabic is the word “Dhiya” which means “Light”.

in english Duna kinda sounds like slurring the words 'do' and 'not' and shandra was an african american name most americans would be familiar with, leaving the name sounding not very regal in pronunciation and along with her hairstyle and overuse of the word 'dark' may have had unintended racial implications.
