  • This Dark Souls Lore video covers Gwyn, Gwyn's Children and, most of all, his son Dark Sun Gwyndolin. Some of the lore chosen is speculation, most is not. The Legends of Lordran Dark Souls Lore video series tend to also attempt to enter the psyche of the character the video is focusing on, imagining the Lore of Lordran from their perspective.

Gwyndolin is the staplemark of how much Gwyn messed up everything. Natural world order, people, his friend, family, kingdom.

he clung too much to his age. greed is what caused his downfall. there shouldnt have been a cycle to begin with. the age of fire soon to be replaced by age of man. gwyn feared that. izalith followed him. nito was the only one who acknowledged the course.

Haha, sounds like my parents and grandparents. They don't understand computers and technology and shit. But they do know how to keep it real and how to work very hard though. Wait a minute, my grandparents are around anymore. But yeah they only know what they learned in Mexico in their time. It can be frustrating teaching them how to select episodes on Netflix through the smart tv. I do understand that much about the Souls series family wise.

Sounds kinda like my family. I always associated with Gwyndolin, doing horrible shit because you're desperate for your father to understand and accept you. Having identity problems struggling with your own existence, hating yourself an others, I had it all happen too. I always felt so sorry for him. When I killed gwyndolin, I honestly had to stop playing, put down the controller, and cry my eyes out. That was a really powerful moment for me because I had recently reconciled with my dad after leaving my school. It was like I was killing the old me that I hated and allowing me to become the person I wanted to be.

Gwyndolin's supposed mother, Velka, the goddess of law, and sin was the only one who accepted him. She taught him from birth to use moonlight magic, and gave him the responsibility of overseeing the child-covenant of the velka-priests who carry out punishment for sins. Velka carried with her to her death, the darkmoon ring which protected and allowed access to gwyndolin's chambers. She held a very strong attachment to gwyndolin, their trinkets prove this. The Velka's talisman, and the Darkmoon catalyst use opposite scaling for their potential abilities. After Velka died, Gwyndolin was truly alone, alone in a world drenched in sin.

Damn, I genuinely feel sorry for Gwyndolin. He was shunned and treated as an outcast by his own family, just because he had an affinity for the moon instead of the sun. I suddenly hate Gwyn, because that's just so terrible of him to do that to his own son. Gwyndolin never chose to have an affinity for the moon, he was born that way. And even when he was pretty much stepped on by his family, he still loved them more than anything and did everything he could to gain their acceptance. And they still didn't accept him.
Jeez, I don't blame Gwyndolin for doing the stuff he's done. Ever since he was born, he was downright abused by those who should've loved him.

We literally have no indication for any of that.
Gwyndolin was raised as a girl due to having an affinity to moon magic. They were not rejected or hated by their own family. Indeed, their mask represents their " adoration of the Sun". They have their own cult of followers, the Blades, who answer to them. Their secrecy is merely a feature of the Covenant, both for it's members and Gwyndolin themselves. It is not an indication of abandonment or hatred; it is their nature as an occult deity associated with swift and unexpected divine punishment.
More importantly, the question of their actual gender identity is still pertinent. The model in Dark Souls 1 has breasts, and is apparently female. The ring that supposedly " forces" them to adopt feminine mannerisms only changes a few gestures, and can be removed at any time. Indeed, were it not for item descriptions, Gwyndolin would be a firm she.
The reason for Gwyndolin's sense of abandonment and despair is simple; their beloved father is dead, and their sibling and fellow gods have all left and abandoned their duties. All that is left is them, a god who never wished for or had the ability to surmount the responsibilities of an entire pantheon.

    Nice job. Good video!
My two (small) gripes are that I think you give Gwynevere and the other absent gods too much moral credit and I think Gwyndolin is perhaps less involved in mortal affairs than you propose.
I don't think Gwynevere and the other denizens of Anor Londo left Lordran because they were disturbed by the actions of Gwyndolin. I think they left out of fear. Gwyn's self-immolation was a desperate attempt to keep power in the hands of the Lords, but seeing the rampant spread of Undeath, the other gods saw Lordran and the kingdoms of men as beyond saving. They got the F out of Dodge!
On Gwyndolin, I see him as a lot more of a back-seat deity. I think it was the rulers of human kingdoms who attempted to exile and quarantine the undead (out of sight, out of mind). Gwyndolin simply took up the mantle of steward. Protecting the throne of a king long dead. Of course he has his Covenant, but beyond that I don't think he concerns himself with humanity.

I love this video. Makes me kind of sad that his boss fight was so lacklustre. Gwyndolin himself should have been so much more powerful. I mean he's the god of the Moon and illusions. His boss fight should have been so much more than just chasing him down a corridor and smacking him over the head a few times. A real shame he wasn't as much of a challenge as his brother was.
And at the end of it all, he gets slowly digested alive by a cannibal blob. From Soft really know how to horrify and sadden you at the same time.
Hope they allow us to get his Moonlight set in the DLC.

I was thinking of putting a lore video link here but I don't want to run around being a scrub advertising everywhere so If you can handle a big paragraph of speculation then here you go.
I've just thought of something that blew my mind and it might be that I'm just an idiot or something and this is a perfectly normal idea that's blowing my mind only. Basically, the lord souls came from the First Flame and after taking them and challenging the dragons the flame started to fade. In Gwyn's soul description it says that he sacrificed MOST of his power to the God's and sacrificed himself but he still has great power in his soul. This was interesting to me because when you kill him, the bonfire in the middle lights up ever so slightly (I think i've seen that I'm not entirely sure(I'll check more)) But I believe that's the rest of Gwyn's power going back to the flame. In the Lordvessels description it says that it is for the chosen undead to fulfil the prophecy with; to take out Gwyn and continue the age of fire. When you put the Lord Souls into the Lordvessel you only unlock the door to the kiln instead of returning the Lord souls to the first flame and returning the world back to how it orignally was which would end the age of the "Gods of Anor Londo" and return power to the now (mostly) dead dragons. The Lord Souls should've been returned to the First Flame not put into the Lordvessel, a tool made by the Gods to fulfil the prophecy. And at the end of this there's a big plot hole which brings me into some more speculation, when the fire begins to die again, who will they get to save them once more? They already have the Lordvessel and the Lord Souls so who will redo the prophecy once more? I came up with this. They waited for someone strong enough (Any descendant with the Dark Soul (which is a Lord Soul so they would be powerful enough) to take on the Lords and get the Lord Souls back to them so they can (get this) power up GWYNDOLIN. Frampt befriended the Gods and Gwyndolin is the only one left and makes an illusion of his Sister to give you the Lordvessel pretending that he is somehow helping you continue your quest. He isn't. He wants to become powerful himself and Frampt is helping him claim the Lord souls so he can become more powerful than all the Gods and rule over as leader. That or they keep repeating the prophecy so all the Dark Soul pieces can slowly be recovered over aeons through all the descendants linking the flame? But yeah that's it. I have more ideas If you want to hear them (if you even see this message that is).

    • @TerraMantis
      @TerraMantis  10 лет назад +14

I read all the messages left in my videos... at least if the person has understandable grammar.
You have some very interesting theories. I do, personally, believe that Framt and Gwyndolin are the "evil" characters of Dark Souls, or at least they are the ones attempting to manipulate the Chosen Undead into doing their will unwittingly. I try not to come right out and take a direct stance in my videos, instead leaving the audience up to the task of making that choice for themselves. That being said, there is no doubt that I tried to paint an evil picture for Gwyndolin's actions in this video, but I try to make people understand why he is the way he is.
Also, there is no plot hole. Dark Souls' narrative repeatedly states that "the flames will eventually fade and only darkness will remain" by many of the NPC and it's even in the prologue cinematic. This is why I always believe that DS2 would be about one of two objectives. One, you're continuing the Link the Flame ending and you're going after the remaining Gods (The real Gwynevere, Flann, Velka, and so on) to use there souls to reinvigorate the flame once again. Or TWO, you're continuing the Dark Lord ending and you're going after those same Gods to put an end to the Age of Fire once and for all by extinguishing the last remaining souls capable of linking the flame once more.
Anyway, for more on Gwyndolin I highly recommend this video:

    • @TerraMantis
      @TerraMantis  10 лет назад +1

***** Honestly I'm not that familiar with Demon's Souls. My brother lent me his PS3 a few years ago and I played and finished Demon's Souls in about 4-5 days, so really that's my extent with it. Immediately afterwards I scoured the internet looking to see if From Soft had any plans to bring something like Demon's to to other platforms and that's when I found out about "Project Dark" and I was pretty happy to say the least. I've pretty much stuck to Dark Souls ever since.
That being said, I did just buy a PS3 about 4 weeks ago and I do own Demon's Souls, but I have yet to give it another go. I've been very tempted to jump back in with "Souls Giving" going on right now but I haven't been able to find the time.
So, to make a long post a little longer; yes, I've thought of it but at my current familiarity with the world and game of Demon's Souls I would not be able to give it the justice that it deserves, maybe one day though. But with my nine-part Dark Souls series nearing its finish about a month before Dark Souls 2 hits the streets, it's a long time off at best.

Flann and Gwynevere are husband and wife, the game doesn't state whether the marriage was before or after they left but something was most likely going on between them prior to their departure either way. Also, it wasn't just Flann who left with Gwynevere. One of the item descriptions says that many deities abandoned Anor Londo after Gwyn linked the flame. That's as detailed as it gets though on who the deserters were.

So let's get to it. That specific part is derived from a conversation with Kaathe when he says "Clinging to his Age of Fire, and in dire fear of humans... Lord Gwyn resisted the course of nature... by sacrificing himself to link the fire, and commanding his children to shepherd the humans." Since Gwynevere is gone, he's the only child left

In all seriousness though, simply aligning with the moon was somehow enough to make Gwyn hate him? That really goes to show just how much Gwyn hates the darkness. If even his closest ones align with anything that resembles the darkness, he immediately acts like they're not his kids anymore.

It's definitely interesting to see other peoples take on lore, especially when it's so well scripted.
I always saw it like this: Gwyndolin, knowing his father whom he loves very much, is burning for all eternity and in everlasting agony. With this knowpedge Gwyndolin would manipulate the Chosen Undead as a means to put an end to the Lord of Cinder's pain. I doubt he even cares if the Chosen Undead brings about the age of darkness, because it will still bring an end to Gwyn's eternal torment.

Great video. I have a personal theory/headcanon that the pantheon of Anor Londo is based on Norse mythology, or more specifically, Marvel's "Thor". Gwyn is Odin, his firstborn son is Thor (and following the popular speculation that the firstborn son is Solaire, that fits in with the plot of Thor no longer being worthy and becoming mortal), and Gwyndolin is Loki. After seeing this video, I believe the Gwyndolin-Loki parallels are there and are quite strong (especially the whole "ruling the kingdom with an illusion" thing, as of Thor: The Dark World). Just wanted to share my thoughts.

In Japanese his name translates to something like Yin/shadow/female/moon of the Yang/light/male/sun - Gwyndolin. All those concepts in two words. Its usually direct translated as "shadow of the sun", which is the most basic translation. Which I guess Dark Sun works as a translation and sounds cool, but the Japanese name is way more about the duality inherent in him that "dark sun" completely misses.

You don't remember because Vaati hasn't done a Gwyndolin video, I try to cover topics he has yet to cover. There will eventually be crossover though, there's no way I'm not doing an Artorias video.
Vaati and I did have a brief back n forth and we're likely going to collaborate on something in the future. Lore, skit, 10 Things, I don't know what it will be, but hopefully it comes together well. And you're right, he is a nice guy.

Some people are Gwyndolins in reality, as I'm suffice to this act. I myself feel ashamed to enlighten under a feminine path as a man. To act under anothers voice and call. To heed appearance that seeks future trickery to the eye. I believe Im something I'm not, carry a fathers destiny in my heart, thus father not to exist no more, I am a mere image of dark sun. Dark son...

I believe the snakes are another one of Gywndolin's illusions like Gwynevere, the statue in front of Gwyn's ceremonial tomb and the Sun and enemies of Anor Londo.
I see him as being insecure and self-concise of his appearance as a result of how he was considered weak for being born under the moon, as such he manifests the snakes to make himself appear more intimidating.
Beside, it's like you said, what says "I'm a man" more than a hentia porn monster slithering from your pants? Not much.

  • @t0lar

I came to this conclusion from several things in the game.
    1. the existence of the tomb of the great lord, and why it was forbidden to enter it.
    2. how the gods presented themselves, the statue in the main hall in anor londo keep, gwyns statue stands taller than Gwynevere, which makes sense since being the chief diety, he would be depicted as bigger.
but, Gwynevere was presented in the "flesh" as a giant, with all of her furnishing equally big, despite the fact that the door was tiny

  • @TerraMantis
    @TerraMantis  11 лет назад

A lot of what you've said is interesting.
I somewhat cover a small part of what you're talking about in the video, but it's very subtle. When it shows Gwyndolin, Flann and Gwynevere in the hallway, I made them all the same (normalish) size and I didn't make Gwynevere a giant like how her illusion is manifested by Gwyndolin. I thought of it more like Gwyndolin was romanticizing his memory of his "big" sister and making her seem even more Godly than she really was.
    I like your interpretation too

The Ring of the Sun's Firstborn's description says this:
"...his [Firstborn] foolishness led to a loss of the annals, and rescinding of his deific status."
The definition of annals is: a record of events year by year.
I didn't say he was expelled because of it though, he may very well still be in Lordran. But, he did lose his status as a god and his name and identity was removed from history as a result.
    Thanks for watching =)

The second son ,or is it sun .yes it is the moon .
Snakes for legs ,the imperfect dragon .Immortal and imperfect ,this is what he stands on and what he stands for.
For he knows what gwen did to the flame ,pollute it, link it to humanity .place dark into light and only the light will be seen the world will be a bright place ,but the dark will consume the light from the inside .and when the light fades ,dark will be around the world once more.
light with dark the endless struggle.
yung and yang / hollow and human

    • @MrTta54
      @MrTta54 8 лет назад

gwen put the dark into the flame like a prison .when the light is only visible we the creatures of dark ,have skin and no dark sign .when the flame fades(lets dark though ,back into the world) the circle the dark sign appears .
imagine Gwen is a preist at an alter with candles (torches /light sources emitting lights) ,humans are shadows ,lordran is the a church .how do you get light eery where when you are only one sorce of light ?
well look at what Gwen did .
spit up the light source and place loads of them down (bonfires),this weakens the light original source .
give light to other monks(other game bosses) this weakens the light sorce at the alter( thus gwens own power)
build walls around the room to make it smaller and trap the shadows away (asylums and prisons sewers )
well he lost much or the land doing that.
in ever act the room becomes brighter at the cost of the alter the first sorce becoming weaker eventualy giving the alter a shadow of it's own .
the moon reflects the light showing the sun that even it marvelous self has a shadow.
(spoiler of mood warning ) poor Gwen ,so like peter pan ,chasing shadows ,giving yourself one and tying it to yourself and living on forever in neverland

Gwyndolin has snakes for feet. The covetous serpent ring(s) states "The serpent is an imperfect dragon and symbol of the Undead. Its habit of devouring prey even larger than itself has led to an association of gluttony."
Solaire lost the annals who else would be dumb enough. Gwyndolin got kicked out for being a abomination who uses sorcery, and now Gwyndolin sits on Gwyns throne, he is not protecting the tomb. JUST MY SPECULATION, GREAT VIDEO.

This video make me think there's a lots of similarities between Ornstein and Gwyndolin even though one is a proud knight and the other is a sinister manipulator. In the end they are both hollowed existence clinging to the last illusion of their normalcy in Anor Londo.
Ornstein, leader of the dragon slayers, and captain of four knights who lost all three of his fellow knights, reduced to a glorified security guard of an illusion. Waiting to be slain by a worthy undead who might (and might not) link the first flame in the end. And Gwyndolin... this video explained it way better than I ever could.
A crazy idea, at the start Ornstein stand guard out of his respect for Gwyn. But maybe over the long millennium he starts to gradually understand and sympathize Gwyndolin. And the proud lion ends up become the only one who truly understand the sinister snake even if he'll never admit it (it's not like Gwyndolin will accept his sympathy even if he express it).

Yeah, it was supposed to be Andre, he was originally going to be a very important character to the story but it got cut. That's also why he is the only NPC in the game that has lip syncing while speaking. From Software wouldn't have spent the time and resources to do lip sync if he wasn't supposed to originally be a pivotal character, Andre would've had a motionless mouth just like everyone else otherwise.
But, in the end, it was cut... so the firstborn could still be anyone.

Disturbed1002 is right. He's "Flame God Flann."
I think Flann has a Lord's soul because in the prologue cinematic it says with the first flame came "Heat, Cold, Life, Death, and of course Light and Dark." Seeing as how each other element is represented by the deity who captured it --Gwyn/Light, Pygmy/Dark, Nito/Death, and Witch/Life --I believe Flann is the "Heat" part of that ordeal and there's still another previously unseen "Cold" Lord's Souls as well.
    But that's complete speculation.

gwyn him self was big, but not Gwynevere big, all of this suggested that each of the gods must of only used illusions of themselves when dealing with humans, this would also be evident in the size of the coffin compared to gwyns actual size
and anor londo was built specifically as a giant temple complex, for the sole purpose of worship, but this mean that the "gods" may be more mortal than they lead on.
