- This Dark Souls Lore video covers the aspect of the so-called Dark Lord ending, but it spans beyond the ending alone. This video starts from the conception of the pygmy's dark soul, looks into the mind of the darkwraith and then leaps through time to the extinguishing of Lord Gwyn's Fire Link by the Dark Lord.
If I have learned anything about Dark Souls, it's that nothing is quite as simple or just as it seems. Ambiguity is very much a theme in Dark Souls and with this video I try to put some perspective on what is ideally considered the "bad" ending of the game. The Dark Lord ending is considered the morally unjust ending due mostly to its association with words like "Dark" the "Darkwraiths" themselves and doing away with the "light" which is usually associated with good in straightforward storytelling, but Dark Souls is anything but straightforward. Also, opposed to the Link the Flame ending, the Dark Lord ending is about seizing power instead of self-sacrifice.
That is... at first glance. From a different perspective the Dark Lord ending is actually about halting a way of life, and, in this case, that way of life is the ill-treatment of humanity by the gods of the Age of Fire; the age of human oppression. When the Dark Lord's tale is inspected more closely, the Darkwraiths, the humans, and eventually the Dark Lord are completely justified in their lust for revenge. In the past and continuing to the present for over 1,000 years, humans have been herded like cattle, splayed open and placed on pikes in the painted world (the original prison or asylum) and the bones of human remains and humanity (souls) are used to kindle the flame to maintain the Age of Fire. Many humans were also sacrificed and drown alive during the flooding of the city New Londo to subside the growth of the Abyss. If stopping that human persecution is the "bad ending" then I don't want to be good.

I'm doing a video on Manus (much later) but I believe the spread of the abyss (darkness) and the lethality of what happened in Oolacile to humans to be unrelated. If you look at New Londo, none of the people there had their "humanity go wild" like the denizens of Oolacile. I think that is a direct result of Manus' influence, not darkness.
Other than that, I think "darkness" is opposite of light and in the context of the story it simply represents change. Darkwraiths support change, others don't
The age of the Abyss isn't the one of Humanity, Vendrick says it in DS2, "the Abyss corrupted what was the purest in Humanity", even Manus, who created them, lost is Humanity. The Abyss are to Dark what Chaos is to Light, it's the evil side of it, the good side of Dark is the one you can reach with the alternativ ending. In my opinion, you are missing many points of DS' lore if you succomb to the stereotype: "Light is good, Dark is evil", just look the Crypt of Undeads if you indulge with that idea.
I agree on the key idea: Chaos and the Abyss are perversions of Light and Dark. Respectively. Neither is good nor bad, they just “are”.

Well I like the Age of Dark better because you get to be the Dark Lord... or you can cast yourself in the fire to continue the Age of Fire only delaying the inevitable, also sacrificing yourself. I know I don't want to die for a extremely stupid cause. Now I'm on NG+ and I now know a lot more of what else I can do.
Well, to be fair, life itself is just delaying the inevitable. If we all just said "Eh, I'm going to die anyways" humanity would not be here right now.
Unless another strong, chosen undead would later come and sacrifice himself to continue the age of fire further, which could theoretically keep on happening forever.
Jacob Zimmerman Well, no. The Age of Fire was made by the First Flame and when it started to extinct there was no other way to prevent this then kindle the flame with one of the prime souls, Gwyn knew that. That is why we find him there, nothing more than a hollow of his former glory.
You as the chosen undead, well atleast the one who killed all the Lords since every undead is chosen, are meant to kindle the First Flame with ALL remaining prime souls. If you did that, there are no prime souls left for the next undead to collect and to sacrifice. Well the only remaining soul would be the Dark Soul but i don't think that it would be quite possible to collect ALL humanity, since humanity is nothing but a splinter of the former Dark Soul, in the remaining time.
And even if you would manage to collect all humanity and therefor rebuilt the Dark Soul, there would be no human left, everyone would be undead and yeah, after you sacrificed yourself there would be nothing more to kindle the First Flame further. The Dark Age can't be stopped from happening.
the curse of life is the curse of want, like a flame that burns bright as it consumes itself. Fire came and brought with it desperity; light and dark can't be separated, they were born together were once only the gray existed and so it shall remain. Eventualy the dark lord will be consume by the abyss utter blackness and a new monarch will be born.
Zajin13 Lore states about how the dark soul grew while the others weakened. It still does in the Dark Soul's universe, There will be more people who will grow more powerful the same way you did (the chosen undead). When your soul begins to wither to ashes in the fire, the curse will be brought upon the world again, there will be new powers in charge (Dark Souls 2 for example) and there will be some undead becoming more powerful the same way you did. When they take your place with a now more powerful soul than yours, the flame can continue to burn. It will continue into an infinite cycle, over and over again. And for sake of future argument, in Dark Souls 2, there are many, many mentions about how you are drawn to the gates of Drangleic, without knowing why. The curse transforms men and gods and the like into undead, making everything else unimportant (except for those that kept there memory, A.K.A peaceful NPC's) and you have the instinct to continue to Drangleic, to replace the previous soul in the kiln.
Voicing is something I've come to enjoy over the last few months that I've been doing/attempting it (I do all the voices in my PvP Etiquette video as well). Voice acting is a thought that's enter my head, but that's as far as it's gone. I think it would be fun and I like it but I have no idea where to even start. For now the answer to that is RUclips.

I still firmly believe that the Dark Lord ending is the good ending and Dark Souls 2 only backs that up for me as it appears that there have been many ages of light and dark since the original. Let's face it though, the age of fire(Or at least Gwyn's age of fire) is pretty much hell for humans. Look at all the suffering that came from it. Why prolong it? Also I don't believe that the dark and the abyss are the same thing. I think the abyss and it's residents are a perversion of the dark in very much the same way that the demons were a perversion of fire and as we see in Dark Souls 2, demons have less of a presence as do those of the abyss excluding Nashandra of course. No, I tend to believe the the age of dark would be a rather peaceful age. I see it as a necessary cleansing of the world almost.
This. And on top of that, the Gods that we meet are either manipulative sociopaths and abusive parents (Gwyn) or crazy tyrants with daddy issues (Gwyndolin).

I think a bit misinterpreted... the abyss is NOT the same as the dark.
The abyss is some fucked up really bad thing, while the dark age is just the natural next age meant by nature.
While I agree, there was a comment on the Dark Souls reddit I read once that said both Chaos and the Abyss are the extremes of Light and Dark respectively. The reason for their existences: Chaos, as we know, was made because the Witch decided to play God as a result of The Flame fading. The Abyss, according to the comment, was born as a result of Gwyn's meddling with Nature. It's the Dark Soul lashing out in rebellion to the linking of The Fire. I know that the Age of Dark endings require the player to perform... morally questionable decisions and actions, but I interpret it as the "Ends justifying the Means." The player in game doesn't necessarily WANT to do them, but if it means bringing salvation to humankind, they'll do it.
At least, that's how I see it.
Hey terramanties, I highly doubt you'll read this, but seeing a ballad of the kindler will be pretty cool. Since you done one of the dark lord, why not do both sides?
I mostly let the fire die in my playthroughs , but i dont feel this way. I never killed the Fair lady for her soul. But killing Gwyn and returning from his mistake is the right call for me. He made humans sacrifice their humanity to bonfires , the humans made this sacrifice and Gwyn also sacrificed himself. But he could not see the bigger picture. Gwyn had started his rule at the end of a "dark" age. By preventing the cycle to continue , he fucks up time and everything.
So as the "successor" of Gwyn , in my mind i open Anor Londo to human settlement while keeping the illusion with Gwyndolin. I make sure Solaire and that Pyromancer bloke survive so that some cool guys remain with me to rule the world with. I think Solaire would have made a great archknight...
if only i could sstart the game as a dark wraith...

Solaire can become the true Lord of Light, which keeps the influence of Manus and the abyss away and you become the Dark Lord, ushering an age where humans are no longer shepherded by these so called "gods" allowing for all to choose their own fate.

There seems to be some confusion so to help you guys out, there will always be a cycle. Even if the dark happens a tiny bit of the flam will always exist and can be reignited. This is confirmed in the other Dark souls. Gwyn commited the first sin and made it so the age of fire will always exist just in a cycle. It won't matter what you chooses because the opposite will eventually happen
But doesnt in Darksouls 3 the cinder meant to really fade, and then truly get reignigted and therefore the- proper way/ages meant by nature ,happen?
So here's a question: If you let "The Flame" go out, who is to say that it will be the abyss that comes? Wouldn't the world just revert back to way it was eventually? Since the Light fades out, who is to say that the Dark(soul) won't either? No one knows where the flame came from. It was just an abnormality that appeared in a world of "grey". Couldn't it be that the world is just trying to rid itself of that abnormality?
I've started to like you more than Vaati. The quality of these videos is impressive, and the ones that use the storybook-like graphic (my favorite is Havel) are just plain awesome. You have definitely earned my subscription with these.

I must say that transition in 2:13 was extremely smooth I had to watch it a second time to notice that he suddenly changed into a dark wraith when that body fell past him.

This video is amazing. One of the best, if not the best Dark Souls lore video I have seen to date.
hmm reading various comments its seems there is 3 different ages and one of the 3 was destroyed to give place for the other two. Dragons ages was everlasting and endless until destroyed by the gods now the gods keep there age alive by keeping the fire going. We also know that in this game fire is often refered as a thing of just life which would mean that age of dark is the end of life. So then why would a creature of death like nito help keep the flame alive and that is simple he works with lord gwyn to keep it alive so more humans can die and by doing so allowing him to absorb more and more humanity. I read that one said its been several dark and fire ages and the (dark lord) get succumbed by the abyss. This would mean that the dark lord serves as abit of a reaper it exists to end an age starting an age of dark and the abyss will later take him allowing another age of fire(life) to begin eventually this fire will burn out to and a new dark lord will rise to end it. I think darksouls is about gwynn the witches and other creatures is simple trying to prevent there age of fire from ending to prolong it some creatures like sif the wolf does so by fighting you and others does so by trickery trying to make you rekindle the flame instead. i came to this by thinking of the npc locked away in the church and how he will make it to up to you later and then goes to kill the main flamekeeper obv he knows what your true purpose is but you have forgotten everything about yourself, The undead asylum was probaly created in fear of the next darklord and ofc functions as a prison this is why the demons are guarding it. After all the demons accepted there fate as demons and do not wish to perish either.
that said i belive rekindle is the bad ending as it halts the natural balance while the good ending is the age of dark and remebering what your true purpose really was to end that age and life in it. Since dragons are everlasting its possible they maintain there the third endless age and by doing so are able to vitness various fire and dark ages,
i have yet to to understand or read alot about darksouls 2 lore but something must be there to connect the dots is it a new age of fire about to end or are the coated player in the intro simple the darklord being drawn to this place to claim that odd throne?.
again this is just speculation maybe some lore pro can come around read it and direct the speculation towards a more correct point.
Excellent use of voice and camera work TerraMantis, and you put up a very convincing argument in the Darkwraith's favor, too many people like to associate the Fire ending with good and jump to the conclusion that the Dark is evil without looking at how the Age of Fire works and what it does to maintain itself.
So wouldn't linking the flame in the end make you just like Gwyn, hollow and empty. Only until a new chosen undead comes to kill you and fulfill the cycle?

The Gwyndolin video was indeed better. But this one is better for it's proper roleplay... if you really are the Dark Lord and exist to do as the Dark Lord WOULD do, this is spot on! Very well done!

I find this hilarious because the Abyss doesn't follow with the darkness. The Abyss is Manus' doing, which is possibly the furtive Pygmy. So in killing off Manus, and becoming the Dark Lord, you technically do not wipe out others, but bring out a new, if not, probably better age than the age of fire, ironically. Kudos to the devs.

You know it was never clear whether the dragons actually forced the Lord's and pigmey under. The Lord's as far as we know attacked the dragons for no real reason. The dragons could have well invited to live among them and in fact they could have avoided the cycle that the world of dark souls is in now. Just a thought
So basically in dark souls I'm playing as the "bad guy"? Forming the age of dark?
Not necessarily. It's one of the two paths you can take. The beauty of Dark Souls is that it doesn't outright tell you which path is the 'dark' path. You're left to wonder the true intentions of the person potentially trying to manipulate you. Whichever path you choose, there is no happy ending.
We just have preconceived notions of what the words dark and light infer about somethings nature. Note that it's described as the age of light and fire by those who are fond of Lord Gwyn and the gods. The age of darkness is an age without the individuals that hold the lord souls in place any longer.
I look as the Dark Soul being one of the 4 Lord Souls. While the other 3 (Light, Life & Death) are powerful from the start, and diminish over time, the Dark Soul is weak from the start but grows in power over time, as more humans become corrupted. I interpret the Age of Fire as the period where Gwyn's Soul reigns supreme. The Age of Dark is when the Dark Soul trumps over the Light/Fire Soul (Gwyn's Soul). It's also interesting that the founder of the Dark Soul is called the 'furtive pygmy', implying that he's considered a nobody by the other lords, presumably because he found a weak soul. The Age of Dark is his reward for being patient in the shadow of more powerful souls. Even if the player kindles the Kiln of the First Flame, it only prolongs the Age of Fire. The Dark Soul will eventually win out. So it's like a classic lesson of the one being laughed at getting the last laugh.
Life Soul.... doesn't sound right. It's made clear from the intro that the Witch of Izalith bore chaos so perhaps the Chaos Soul would be more fitting (even though life and death. I also do not believe that the Light Soul is an appropriate name given the grim connotations of every other soul (Darkness, death and chaos) and the fact that Gwyn is only named the Lord of Sunlight because that's what he was labelled as,it feels out of place. Perhaps the four souls weren't salvation, but instead a reckoning.
With the Death soul came the undead, birthing monstrosities of the underworld. With the Chaos soul came the demons, birthing monstrosities of chaos. With the Dark soul came the abyss, birthing dangerous hunters, mutated familiars and tramsforming it's victims into monsters. The Light soul... was the catalyst. Through the Light Soul came the dying fire, the reason for fearing the undead, bore from the Death Soul and the giving a wanting to re-create the Kiln to the Witch of Izalith. And the four souls together claimed the mass existance of the Ancients (dragons, giants, assumedly others).
There is no way of truly preventing the age of dark. The flames will fade one day and no amount of undead sacrifices will change that, even Gwyn one of the most powerful beings in the world could not keep the fire lit. And all that is required is for Kaathe to trick the next powerful undead into letting the flames fade. And then the end truly begins. Now that I think about it it all has a very Four Horsemen feel to it. Four kingdoms, the kingdom of the dead (the undead). the kindom of war and slaughter (the demons), the kingdom of disease (the abyss) and the kingdom of famine (the fading humans, non-hollowed undead and lords). Or possibly, taking alternative representations:
Gwyn, the White Horseman, a being consumed with the desire of conquest, he led the assaukt on the dragons and was victorious,He has one crown and is labelled as a prophet despite abandoning his people and sacrficing himself in vain in a desperate attempt of conquering darkness.
Nito, the Pale Horseman, a being that acted as the harbinger of the undead. Following Nito came undead soldiers, knights, hollows and monsters. Nito used a miasma of death and disease to overcome the dragons and most interestingly, following the victory, Nito, and his undead minion were granted a large amount of Lordran to rule over (the Firelink graveyard, the catacombs and the Tomb of the Giants), as granted to Death and Hades.
The Witch of Izalith, the Red Horeman, a being who brought with her mass slaughter and war. A war between her people and the demons the Bed of Chaos birthed. The slaughter of her family, her city and, come present, a large amount of her entire race.
The Furtive Pigmy, the Black Horseman, the vanguard of distinguishing of fire and the stealing of the humanity used to feed the flame. With him came the creatures of dark and the abyss, and following this came the hunger of the fire for souls, for humanity, for life.
Each "horseman" was granted or took a kingdom (Izalith/Blighttown, Catacombs/Tomb of the Giants, Anor Londo and New Londo/Oolacile respectively). And once the flames fade the war will begin. An apocalypse from which Lordran is destroyed. And to prevent this end from infecting other worlds the Archstone, the only way in or out of the world of Lordran was shattered.
Whether the name sounds out of place or not isn't the point. The point is that light, dark, life and death were the four elements which sprouted out upon the appearance of the first flame. That's the theme of the game, and the very first thing we learn in the opening cinematic. Naturally, a great soul representing each of these elements also appeared.
Do you really think Gwyn was called the Lord of Sunlight by coincidence? And that he had an affinity for the sun, to the point that when Gwyndoline was born with an affinity for the moon, he was raised as a girl out of embarrassment to his father?
The Witch of Izalith's soul may have never been called the 'Life Soul', but think about it. When she attempted to recreate the first flame, and her soul spiraled out of control, what resulted from it? The creation of demons; creation = life. None of the other Lord's souls were said to have created any life, but merely bequeathed to people. Gwyn granted portions of his soul to the 4 kings, his knights and Seath. But they were existing lifeforms which were made more powerful with a fragment of Gwyn's soul. Gywn couldn't create life. Only the Chaos Soul could.
Regardless of what the Lord Souls were officially called in the game, what matters is their representation - the 4 elemental disparities

Is the guy that says "You are a Darwraith" and sounds like yoda an NPC or is that just added to make the video better?
It seems most people believe that Oolacile is proof that the spread of the dark is a negative, but I interpreted it like you did! I'm glad someone else does. I don't think Oolacile represents what would happen during the Age of Dark.
i say is why delay the inevitable? especially if you do extend the Age of Fire, you'll end up sacrificing yourself in the end.

The Dark cannot corrupt man because the dark is man ITSELF, humans are the dark soul itself broken into many pieces, the incident at Oolacile was caused by Manus' magic himself, it wasn't caused by darkness by itself but by Manus using it. The four kings as well used darkness for evil needs. Darkness by itself is humanity, darkness does not mean evil, darkness by itself just means human, not destruction or ruin or evil.
One thing I don't understand is how linking the fire helps the "gods". You had to kill them just to do it! And, if it helps them, why are they trying to stop you?

That's the enigma about the whole ordeal as well, what does the dark pose to men? If we think of the abyss as a creation of Manus, then we must expect a world without the celestial flames to be a world without undeath, considering the shepherding, but also void of the warmth they brought. Since the dark soul spits up to make the human essence and continues to split and split, et cetera, what would a world overcome by it and not the lord souls be. Like before the flame? only with the dark soul?
I remember reading an item description stating that the darkwraiths may be more human than the player. I find it interesting, because if that is true, than does that mean the darkwraiths are only trying to stop the torturing of humans, and let humankind be in the leading role for once? In the "link the fire" ending, all we are doing is holding up mankinds freedom and allowing the gods to cling to their false hope. Or is kaathe just a lying prick who only wants to use the chosen undead to bring about a horrible age of destruction.

The two end will lead to the same thing. If you kindle the first flamme the age of fire will stay a bit longer... but the flamme will finish by fading and will die.... If you let the flamme die, someone will, even if it take 1000 years, kindle the flamme and a new age of fire will appear.. after that, the age of dark will come and fire and dark and fire.... until something big changes thing... It's a cycle and only everlasting dragon can survive this.

I don't think so. There's a theory my friend and I thought of that in truth, the Abyss is to the Dark like what the Chaos Flame is to the Light.
If the Chaos Flame is the result of the Witch of Izalith trying to replicate the First Flame and that result went out of control, then I believe that the Abyss is a mutated duplicate of the Dark that went out of control.
