Dark Souls Lore: Havel The Rock

- This Dark Souls Lore video primarily covers the Great Demon War with a focus on Bishop Havel the Rock and his relation to the White Dragon Seath the Scaleless. Some of the lore chosen is speculation, some is not. The Legends of Lordran Dark Souls Lore videos series also tend to attempt to enter the psyche of the character the video is focusing on; imagining the Lore of Lordran from their perspective. So if some of the lore seems inaccurate it may be due to the fact that it IS false because the subject of the video (Havel in this case) is misinformed or does not know the whole truth.

I like to think he hated magic so much, so damn much that he created the miracles Magic Barrier and Great Magic Barrier. And the fact that Gwyn allows Seath to continue to live and he sided with him in the war AND granted him dukedom... I think Havel was tired of Gwyns magic bullshit and wanted to end it, he was the only one with the strength to take on the gods themselves. All he needed was the right weapon. That's why we find an Occult club with his armor in Anor Londo. I think he was captured and locked in the tower right before he was going to kill Gwyn and Seath.
but, if he is "locked" in that tower, why he doesn't leave when, YOU(chosen undead) opened the door, if you run from him, and leave the tower, he's just gonna come back to his original spot : /
Diego de Souza It's likely that Havel had gone hollow during his "stay" in the tower... His purpose of killing Gwyn and Seath was taken from him when he was caught and locked away.

shottybeatssword Hollows seem to recall their last duty or will. Hollow guards will still guard, hollow soldiers still remember how to fight, hollows in asylum are just crying, even if they no longer have minds. That would imply that Havel was content with being imprisoned - or that the prisoner in the tower is not the true Havel. Havel's ring suggests that replicas of Havel's gear were given to his soldiers, so maybe the person in the tower was one of bishop's warriors who voulontiered/was commanded to pose as the true Havel and have himself imprisoned in his place, possibly explaining why he is happy to stay inside, and why we find Havel's armor and weapons in Anor Londo, a place where the person in the tower couldn't possibly have put his gear, as he dies while still using it, in the tower.

So you meant to say that the final wish of 'Havel' was to keep up the appearance of being Havel and never leave the Tower. Explains why he/she won't leave it.
When I killed Seath I killed him in Havel's name
When I killed Seath, it was with a Dragon's Tooth and a Boulder. that and some Anti-Magic bug spray.
I killed Seath in Rhea's name; she will always be M'lady.

The Havel in Dark Souls 3 at Archdragon is a Havel Knight, it's not Havel The Rock. He's probably there to oppose Nameless.
I have a really strange image of a giant Seath reading little books. am I missing something?
Seathe can’t read, he’s blind. He uses brail or has his channellers read them to him. He doesn’t read anymore though, because he went insane from the overflow of knowledge. If he wasn’t insane and knew that you were going to link the fire perhaps he would have just given you the lord soul.

Humans aren't hollows because hollows are souless husk while humans possess a soul a sprite of humanity a piece of the dark soul so since they possess a soul they are listed as a different species
Unkindled are humans who failed to become lords of cinder and instead were burned to nothing but ash and will rise like undead when the fire begins to fade and they are undead but they cannot hollow unless they do yoel's quest so the Unkindled are cursed by resurrecting after death but they don't hollow

Undead have a dark soul but eventually lose it over time
Hollows have no soul because they are empty souless husk

According to the intro of ds1 every humanoid species such as the lords, giants, humans, pygmies, etc. Were all once hollow but became new species once they possessed souls
Also beings who possess souls can die and stay dead while undead are linked to the bonfires and resurrect from death and are immortal but in doing so they lose their souls aka their humanity
Unkindled are also linked to the fire but will only rise from the ashes when the fire is in danger of fading but the difference between normal undead and unkindled ash undead is that Unkindled do not hollow because their humanity has been burnt up and become embers so they no longer are beings of dark but are instead now beings of light

Also hollowing only happens to humanoid beings but it happens mostly to humans because gywn placed the dark sign aka the seal of fire on their humanity to make sure they lose it over time in order for them to want to cure the curse and to make them want to link the fire over and over again to prolong the age of gods aka the age of light aka the age of fire

yes, Havel was undead. When you find him he is far hollowed.
But how could he be undead if he fought with gwyn? as far as i know the curse came after the dragons were defeated.
And that is probably not havel.
This whole video is an interpretation of the his legend pieced together by vid-maker. but Havel is definitely undead. Undead came into being when Lord Gwyn linked himself to the flame. He defied the natural order and the Dark Ring was the curse created. Havel was locked in the basement before Gwyn linked and just happened to get cursed while down there. but its interpretation.
You don't just "get" the curse, its not a cold, your born with it.

Dark Souls Lore is awesome, but i wished there were at least some stories which end in a good way. It would make the following once a bit more intriguing. As it is now, you basically know how every single Story ends in Dark Souls 2 aswell - either tragedy, madness or death.
This is a world of darkness...sorry mate, there are no happy endings.

Well, not really. If you save Solaire, he finds his Sun in lighting the bonfire. It is a small sea of fire, warming and protecting all those, who look at it, whilst praising. The Kiln IS a sun in its own.
We also thought a little about it with a friend and there are a couple of people you can actually save by exploiting your knowledge. That is ofc, if Solair lits the bonfire and you go back to do all the stuff there was no time for.
First off - The firekeeper at the firelink Shrine. I actually think its Astraea from Demon's Souls - the says that she is inpure by a degree, that required her tongue to be cut out. Remember her in Demon's Souls? She had followers. Hollows who were harmless, praying to her and a knight by her side. New followers are there - they are right below the shrine, praying to her from below. And she - lost her Knight - wish not to speak to anyone, for any reason. She may overcome the grief and become happy again, if someone would drag her out of her misery.
The maiden, who goes into the catacombs - kill Petrus, dont buy all her wonders. She will wait unharmed for you.
Quelaan - we dont know how much humanity she needs, but dear Gwyn, i will facestomp Darkwraith covenants until she had enough. Also - the Goddess' Blessing cures everything, as the description says, so it should be able to heal both Firekeepers - the one in Anor Londo and the Fair Lady.
Priscilla wakes over her kingdom, yet she maybe wouldnt need to, once Seath is gone and all of the old ones. New rulers are required to keep the balance and who would be suited better for it than a kind, yet strong mistress?

I know Souls lore like the back of my hand but, nearly 2 years after first seeing this video I still come back to watch it every now and then.
I still get shivers up my spine listening to this and it reminds of when I first played Dark Souls. Even though some of this is just speculation, it is presented in such an amazing way.

You have a talent for telling stories. It's impressive how you take the few pieces of in-game evidence to create a compelling, convincing story about the character of your tale. I also like how you chose a first-person perspective for Havel's tale. The narrative sounded personal, and I feel that I understand the personality and inner struggles of this heroic bishop.
Enjoyable, I love the transition in his name. From Bishop, to just Havel, and finally Havel the Rock. There were some odd repetitions in the spoken word that cut the flow of speech that threw me off, but conceptually I it was much better than I expected.
Also what seemed to be the words "occult" rebellion in reference to how the Occult Club got there with Havel that I have to point out for viewers who may have not caught it.
this is more like Havel's personal backstory, you should look a little into the videos about Velka and other lore videos about Havel, from what I've seen/read the rebellion did happen, or maybe it didn't but there's much more to Havel ('s followers) than meets they eye

gwyns silverknights turned black when Gwyn kindled the first flame while they were in the kiln, as far as I know. that's why they are rather charred

This was absolutely amazing, this is the best presented, most detailed lore video ive ever watched the story makes so much sense and is so deep. The only thing that I think could have made it better would be sections of havel fighting through the areas in between entries in the journal just thirty seconds or so. But that would just be a nice extra the video is excellebt as it is, I'm going to watch it again now :-)

In all honesty, I think that the Dragon in Ash Lake might be him due to the Humanoid face (if I'm looking correctly).
Reason why the "Havel" we see in the tower is not him is due to the ring description which states that "Havel's men wore this ring to express faith in their leader and to carry a heavier load" thus leading that the havel that is found in the tower might be one of his men.
Now, the reason why I think that the Ash Lake dragon is in fact the real Havel is because of A) how the final entries in this video say how he picked up one of the scale and felt the power of the dragon within himself. B) How he believed that the only method in which to defeat a god was to be a dragon. C) If you look at the Ash Lakes dragons physical body and compare it to the human dragon form or (Baby Dragon in size) They're completely identical EXCEPT, the Ash lake dragon has wings and a tail. D) Both Dragon covenant provided items (Dragon head stone, Dragon torso stone) make it quite seem that due to havel's belief in dragons being the only stronger than gods that maybe he had found a way to become one himself during the time he was in ash lake.

Even though you don't get those items off the "not real Havel" when you kill him in the watch tower, you still find those items in the palace of Anor Londo. Just saying... either way, it would appear that there's more than one set I guess.
I was figured it was cause of a balancing stand point not a lore that you don't get his stuff.So it makes sense he doesn't drop it.

It did, I try to do a new video every 7-14 days but this one is probably one of the most difficult videos I've ever made from a technical standpoint. It was about 17 days ago that my most recent video (Manus) was released. A little off schedule but I do my best.

Yes, I write everything on my channel. There are 8 other lore episodes. Artorias and Gwyn seem to be regarded as my best work according to comments in those videos. I'd wish to see this extended up to the part where it is explained why does Havel own an Occult weapon (The only weapons capable of opposing the gods). It would be awesome!

Havel actually was utilizing the Occult element, which is known to kill the gods. It is thought that he was in league with an "actual" god, Velka, and that his treachery is the reason why the Black Ember was sealed away in the Painted World. This is why there's an Occult Club next to his armor set.

I was ecstatic when I saw elements from majora's is tied for my favorite game and the milk bar and its theme is one of the best things in it so when I saw the milk bar in the new one I was so happy because I was going to hear an updated rendition of the them and bar but no it wasn't even similar felt surprised and sad

Also it missed the fact that the followers of the occult tried to steal the power of gravelord Nito and the Lord soul of death. This is where occult weapons and the dark ember come from.
These where latter sealed in the painted world by the gods.

Nice yarn. Is there any lore that Havel went to the Duke's archives? I know you find his barrier in Ash Lake and EpicNameBro thinks he was a traitor and did join the occult rebellion because an occult axe was found with his things in Gwyn's old keep. I am by no means an expert and at the Duke's archives right now so would love to find the items for myself

Very very very interesting perspective on this. I think it plays well into the tongue in cheek presentation of whatever item it is whose description refers to Havel being locked up "for his own good of course." The only question I have then is this: if Havel partook in the power of the Dragons, why doesn't he use this power when you happen upon him in the bottom of the tower?
Because that is not Havel anymore he was powerful but not enough to last so long in solitude at the bottom of the tower he died and became hollow and thats what remains at the bottom of the tower, a shell of a man.
