    Wikipedia Pluto description (it can be Pluto or Hades, Hades was the original name but changed as greek culture developed, with Hades becoming the name for the underworld):
    Pluto (mythology)
    Pluto (Greek: Πλούτων, Ploutōn) was the ruler of the underworld in classical mythology. The earlier name for the god was Hades, which became more common as the name of the underworld itself. In ancient Greek religion and mythology, Pluto represents a more positive concept of the god who presides over the afterlife.

    Nito was originally supposed to be under where Priscilla is in the game if I remember correctly. Priscilla also holds a scythe and has run away from something. Maybe Gwyn threatened her to leave Nito as it would seem like Gwyn's foes are joining in a sense, and that's why Nito mourns her as she is hidden from him in the Painted world. Just a thought.

      Calle Nilsson Yeah. Though to be fair 1) he can be quite challenging for certain classes, 2) it’s easy to lose control of the fact. It’s a rather easy fight, but where making an error bites you in the butt harder than for many other bosses, especially if you don’t know his attacks.
      It’s a bit like Lorian‘ first phase, or Nameless King, they are quite easy to deal with (well... a bit less so in NK’s case ^^), but fail at dodging their heavy hitting attacks, and they‘ll wreck you, possibly one or two shot you.
      So, although I still think it’s an easy fight, and a bit of a letdown for one of the mighty Lords, now I think he is still quite good and well balanced.
      Honestly I’d say it wouldn’t be far from perfection (for a Nito fight) if the arena was bigger, more « catacomby », and maybe if the mob spawned were a bit more unique.
      How’d you improve it ? (Without totally altering either Nito or his combat style that is ^^)

In light of this, I can't help but notice that all of the "trapped" statues in the Catacombs bear the mask of the Mother (with spikes emanating from what appears to be a crest of the Child) whilst the statues bearing the visage of the Father are benign. You may be interested to know that the character design for Nito likely comes from a Kurosawa film in the late 1950s. Throne of Blood at the end of the first encounter with the Kami (19:40 or so) shows a pile of bones which Nito seems to be an exact copy of. For now, the movie is on Daily Motion, so give it a look some time.

    I´ll still post this despite the years that had passed:
    Illusory Wall uploaded a video in which he goes in depth about the things that can be found out of bounds (unused paths & structures, etc), and in one ocasion he found a third smaller coffin in the top-right wall besides Nito´s coffin. He suggested that the statues in the catacombs are a tribute to Nito´s potential family and that pinwheel could very well be a cultist copycat.

      Two errors:
      One, Nito is unequivocally *not* The Rotten (that honor belongs to Gwynevere, who eventually became The Rotten after leaving Anor Londo.). The Rotten merely possesses Nito’s old soul. This is an extremely common misconception, that the 4 main bosses carrying those old souls are reincarnations. This is easily disproved when you consider that the Old Paledrake soul isn’t even a drop in the same sense as the others-you literally walk over and pick it up off the ground like any other item. These are merely souls that these bosses happen to be holding in their possession, much the same as when an enemy is killed and drops a consumable item and you pick that up. They would have gained possession of these souls at some point after the Lordvessel was brought to Drangleic and destroyed (you find it broken in the mansion basement in Majula). Remember, those 4 specific souls don’t function like any other boss soul. We never consumed or crafted anything from the souls of Gwyn/Seath/Witch of Izalith/Nito in DS1. They were put in the Lordvessel and that’s where they stayed. This is how they still exist in DS2.
      Second, the events of DS2 take place aeons after the original dark souls. Straid talks about ‘countless kingdoms’ rising and falling between the events of DS1 and the current kingdom of Drangleic. Not possible in “a few hundred years”.

    I just thought about the gravelord covenant and how you basically produce and offer "eyes of death" to nito, and eyes of death would literally be Nito´s eyes and so this implies Nito wants to see something? He´s looking for something, or someone. he wants to find his lost love, and thats why he spreads death, to literally gain more space to look around in with his eyes of death.
    before that I simply thought Nito wants to "see" more death, through his eyes of death as well, because he´s the god of death and yeah it basically is his thing and makes his power grow.
    now I believe it is that, but he´s not craving power just for the sake of it, he is looking for his love.
    also these harvest goddess carvings are located in anor londo, where the painting is located, where priscilla, a scythe wielding godess is located, and its always winter there.
    wow my mind is going apeshit on all that stuff, please think about this more and make more videos, so I dont have to think about it myself too much.

    I always thought Nito didn't care about the world and actually wanted to be defeated by the chosen undead. I mean, he's the easiest of the four lords even though he's supposed to be the Dark Souls equivalent of death himself. But what kind of power does death has in a world where everyone returns as undead? Nito in this world is needless, death has no power anymore and Nito knows this very well. He's discarded, forgotten, sleeping in a long-lost dark tomb-cave while his chamber is occupied by none other but the insignificant heretic Pinwheel.
    I do believe Nito is depressed, but not for a long-lost love, but his long-lost relevance. No one fears Nito, because he can't do anything at all anymore. His existance was a slow suffering which he tried to escape from, and this might be the reason why defeating him feels so easy...

      Maybe both? Maybe he was already bummed because his purpose was lost thanks to his former comrades, but if the one light of his life, his loved one, left or was forced to leave? That might’ve sunk him into eternal despair, as now the only person he found a reason to live for was gone, he was left with nothing. My first guess would have been Gwynevere because of what she represents. In general she's considered MIA. It's mildly assumed Priscilla is a daughter of Gwynevere which could explain why she caries a scythe in that regard. Alternatively it could be the Witch of Izalith whom brings life. Izalith IS overlooked by the Tomb of the Giants. Then in DS3 we a coffin big enough for Nito in Cemetery of Ash being covered over by a very exposed large tree with little explanation. We also see those 2 and Four Kings represented in Farron at the 3 fires.

    Priscilla fits perfectly there in that coffin. My headcanon is that Nito and Priscilla's love is mutual, consensual, and was something Gwyn didn't care much about and actually approved of since neither he, the witch and seathe want her in the picture of their respective rules. Out of sight and out of mind within a coffin along with her love proves to be a mutual benefit for both sides. Then the undead curse came with the fading of the fire. And Nito, being a God of Death, was the first to feel its implications. Either out of worry, or through convincing of what could happen if the fire fades completely (Frampt warning them about the spread of the Abyss and the incoming age of dark), Nito had a "better safe than sorry" solution for the survival of his love and had her sent to the Painted World which served as the "Fallout Shelter" to the incoming apocalypse. This can go so far as I can assume Nito was the one who probably commissioned the Painted World of Ariamis OR pleaded with Gwyn, or whoever was in charge at that time, to have her placed there for her safety. But for the rest of the Gods, minus Nito, it was her prison. He even had an undead dragon to effectively guard where she was or at least be reminded of her beloved God of Death. This was obviously a heartbreaking undertaking for Nito and neither of them wanted this. Maybe there was a breakup or a quarrel, or just the plain fact that neither of them wanted to be separated from one another. The fact that Nito barely puts up a fight in our encounter with him show that the whole thing took its toll on him, leaving him depressed. Add that up with the fear and paranoia of the apocalypse and sending Priscilla to a faraway place. I mean, did the other gods, the ones that don't want her ruining their percieved godhood, hold up their end of the bargain and kept her in the Painted World instead of being experimented on again by Seathe?

    What if Gwyn promised Nito a Gwynevere (godess of fertility as she sais herself) as payment for his services against the dragons. Afraid of giving away his daughter, Gwyn delayed this side of the agreement they had.
    Later, Priscila was born and given to Nito by Gwyn. When she eventually returned, she was locked in the painted world so she would stay with (or rather around) her family. The scythe and jars in the catacombs are provisions she took for herself.

    So in my opinion it has to be Priscilla, right? The prevailing theory is that Gwynevere is her mother, Gwynevere is hailed as a goddess of bounty, same as Demeter. Not to mention Priscilla uses a scythe, commonly seen with grim reaper type characters such as Nito. Not to mention Gwyn's alliance with Nito is mostly based on Gwyn not wanting Nito to bring death to the gods, which means he's very capable of doing so. The Lifehunt Scythe is also feared because of this, so it would make sense that Nito would be the one to bestow it to her. And just for appearances sake, Priscilla is in a more wintery area which is the season which comes about when Persophone is taken. All that and then add to the fact that both Priscilla and Nito's weapons have been conjured by Aldrich in DS3 from his dreaming, I think it's a very fair conclusion to come to.

  • @dweebpatrol
    @dweebpatrol 2 года назад +1

    It's more accurate to say Hades instead of Pluto, Pluto means "Wealthy" or essentially "The Wealthy One" in the context of the god, it wasn't the actual name changing over time it was just a title attributed to Hades being used over his real one because the culture of Ancient Greece started to fear the cathonic (underworld related) gods and generally tried to avoid using their proper names. Basically Pluto is a shortening of something like Pluto Hades, meaning Hades The Wealthy, not a name by itself.

    More support for Priscilla as Nito's love:
    After Gwyn's lighting peeled the scales of immortality from the dragons, it was Nito's plagues that killed them. The undead dragons you see in the game are often seen as a byproduct of Nito's handy work. What do we find in the painted world with Priscilla?
    An undead dragon.
    Priscilla refers to the inhabitants of the painted world as "kind, gentle creatures"(something like that). Who would think of an undead-poison spewing dragon as a "kind, gentle creature"? Maybe someone in love with a zombie god?

    • @saunajaakko699
      @saunajaakko699 7 лет назад

      Why would anyone hang around with lover of the person who killed your kind?
      It makes as much sense as gassed jew hanging around with Eva Braun.
      In Hawksaws video talking about translations from japanese Dark Souls, Nito brought death but not diseases. So it casts doubt on idea that undead dragons are Nito's doings. There is also no reason to believe that Nito controlled them.

    • @Ichorslick99
      @Ichorslick99 7 лет назад +1

    There is an undead dragon in the painted world. It begs the question why? Why is an undead dragon of all things defend Priscilla, daughter of the gods in an ethernal winter. She has the ability of Lifehunt, wich means she naturally has the power to take lifes away. I belive this is a seperate power from Nitos, yet similar in a sense.
    Then she wields a scythe. To me the only explanation of an undead dragon that had to raised by someone powerful, who spreads miasama the trademark of Nito Guards the easy way to reach priscilla. The harder way down there is guided by, you guessed it, SKELETONS. BONEWHEEL SKELETONS. Both are undead enemy who has no reason to exsist outside the catacombs/tomb of the giants, yet, it does, in the painted world.
    I fully belive Priscilla is Nitos Mistress and Since he cannot be with her anymore, he does the next best thing. He protects her with the biggest army of undead he can manage to keep alive that far away. Like think for a second, do you seriously think an undead dragon just flies in to anor londo and enters the painting? Or they enter as a form of pact when priscilla gets imprisoned.

    Yeah the story of persephone in Greek mythology always seemed off. It explains the seasons, so persephone was in the underworld for 6 months, and nobody goes searching for her or is upset that she was "taken". My theory is that persephone did love hades, but he was the "bad boy" type and her mother didn't approve. So to keep her mother happy, she returns for spring, and leaves for the underworld, and her husband in fall.

    great video, only thing i do wonder about the whole jars containing corpses thing. when you look at the broken jars you can see that there isn't just one, but many bodies inside them. almost as if they just crammed as many in as they could. seems kind of disrespectfull to call them a "coffin". i don't have any theories now, but it does not seem to be a very honourable way to be buried there. then again, perhaps the alcoves in the walls are for the rich only, and the poor can only afford being placed in the catacombs by being shoved in a jar...

      "Pluto was originally not the god of the underworld. Pluto is cognate with the Greek word "Ploutos" (wealth, cf. plutocracy), and, under the original name Plutus, was considered by the Romans as the giver of gold, silver, and other subterranean substances. Because these "gifts" were mined, Pluto became recognized as the god of the physical underworld, which in turn helped him become recognized as the god of the spiritual underworld and thus death."

    I actually never knew about about the scream animation after Nito cast's the Grave lord miracle, it's cool to speculate but I don't think their is any real reason in the "in game" lore given to the player to suggest any meaning for it.

      Yasir Malik Hawkshaw literally mentioned that Miyazaki himself has said that not everything in the Dark Souls world has an obvious explanation behind it, or even has information in game. I don't believe there is any reason within the lore presented to us as players and viewers of the game, but I find it hard to believe there is no explanation behind it within Miyazaki's mind or vision of the world he created.
