I would love to talk with you over Discord as I have so many questions regarding Japanese text/official books...also word of advice: Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are not canonically connected to one another. DeS, DS, and Bloodborne have callouts to other games, however they aren't meant to be canonical bindings. The same is true between Bloodborne, and FromSoft's experimental VR game Deracine.
It is unimaginably funny to me that crystal sage's name is just "crystal old person"

We have a kind of similar system of Kanji (words borrowed from Chinese), the name in Vietnamese is “Kết Tinh Cổ Lão” and it sounds very cool. It refers to a person that is very old and (probably) very wise.
I feel like “Ashen Iudex Gundyr” or “Iudex of Ashes Gundyr” would have both been more accurate and helped convey that “Iudex” is a word and not a proper name, something I don’t think most people would immediately pick up on

I think just "Ashen Judge Gundyr" would have worked well and sounds nice. Iudex is interesting and all but not necessary imo
I don't know about anyone else, but as someone who has a weird relationship with latin (was an alter boy so I can recognize a latin word, can't understand it tho) Iudex was damn perfect. I immediately understood it was some sort of title, and it made the otherwise imposing but easy boss have a much greater presence, in my mind, making him my favorite tutorial boss in all the games. Though I agree "Ashen" should've been there somewhere, I love how they didn't just used Judge, as using Iudex made him seem that much more ancient, powerful and important.

6:05 Quick aside, Lorian and Lothric's names may actually be a reference to the location in The Lord of the Rings (similar to Anor Londo and irithyll), called lothlorien. What makes this reference a bit more interesting is that lothlorien is named after a god in Tolkien's universe: Lorian. Lorian has an older brother, who creates new bodies for elves to inhabit after they die, a strange coincidence given Lothric revives Lorien, no?
For the deacons of the deep boss; The reason why “bishop” is changed to “deacon” is for a couple of reasons. Churches usually only have one bishop at a singular church but often have a set number of deacons. Deacons usually aren’t dressed up in the hat or sometimes cane that bishops have. Also, deacons usually serve auxiliary roles in churches. Like handing out the lords supper to the audience. I think this makes more sense within the story that they would be these appointed individuals that serve the churches interests in a technical way. (Aka tending to Aldrich’s grave)
I assume the Bishop refers to the final member of the clergy you rail on to defeat the boss. So, I also think the crowd all consist of Deacons, aside from the one member. It’s definitely hard to make a concise name for that!
personally, i assume "Deacons of the Deep" was chosen for its alliteration. it sounds nicer, though maybe some other phrasing could've been found that would allow "bishop" to be fitted in better

I am a professional in translation and localization and sometimes, as long as the general meaning is preserved, you just have to go with what sounds better.
I actually liked how the English version named the Soul of Cinder. The first phase makes it clear that this creature is an amalgam of player builds, that is to say, successful Chosen Undead. The Gwyn's theme redux, combined with the stance change, does and excellent job of asking and answering the question: what about the first guy to link the First Flame?

While it *IS* less literal, something being the "soul" of something is used in English to denote this thing being the 'amalgamation' or 'purest form' of something. So, the Soul of Cinder doesn't come off as quite as confusing as you might think to native speakers.
People might refer to the 'soul of' a certain era/decade for instance.
If they'd just made it soul of cinders it would have translated a bit better I think. Just making it plural like that, along with the music, would have conveyed the meaning better
Yea i think the english version is better as the soul is the essence of a beings life so the soul of cinder is the essence of cinder adverse to king which is a ruler of a land
In regards to "Deacons of the Deep", I think only the one in the second phase is the bishop.(He wears a bishop's hat and all that.)
And the mob enemies are just deacons, I think deacon is also the word used for none-boss mobs.(What is their OG Japanese though, I think it might be that.)
Good point about the one in the hat! However, the original calls them all 主教 [shukyo:] - bishops. Ordinary enemies are also called that, and the Deacon Set is 主教シリーズ [shukyo: shiri:zu] - bishop set. Interestingly enough, Archdeacon McDonnell is actually Archbishop McDonnell (大主教マクダネル [daishukyo: makudaneru]), although he doesn't wear any hat. It's quite confusing :D
@@shetanislair Thank you for the explanation. As said in another comment Chinese is my native language and my localization is also "主教群"(Bishops), but again I am not that aware of church titles so I don't find anything off back then.(When I watch English streams and stuff that is.)
@@shetanislair It might have to do with what context of what bishop means in Japanese versus in the west where bishops were historically high ranking in nobility often with substantial land attached to their office. That is a bit at odds with the far more subservient role that the deacons in Dark Souls 3 play often being mere guards and caretakers for other higher ranking clergy members which is closer to the traditional role of deacons in the catholic church.
That was my first instinct as well. While I don't speak Japanese, not even as a second language, AFAIK the -tachi suffix is used not only as a pluralizing suffix, but more broadly to represent groups associated with the root word. For example, saying "Robin-tachi" I could be referring to my group of friends and not necessarily a group of people named Robin. Maybe the same thing is happening here, where the original is supposed to mean "Bishop of the Deep and his Deacons", and that was just too long for a boss name, so they went for just "Deacons of the Deep", which sounds good thanks to the alliteration, it conveys the clerical connections of the boss and it emphasizes one of the key aspects of the fight, which is that you are fighting a group. Then again, focusing on the bishop in the name would have probably made it easier to understand the actual mechanics of the fight, but I digress.
While Avatar of Kings is a badass title you have to remember it wasn't only Kings that sacrificed themselves as kindling for the first flame. Soul of Cinder captures that better imo because it's an accumilation of all Souls who offered themselves and were thus made cinders.
It could also be argued that like in DS2 anyone capable of linking the fire is a “True Monarch” so linking the fire makes you worthy of being a king
I think a lot of the slightly strange translations come from something just sounding better - Deacons of the Deep being alliterative as opposed to Bishops of the Deep, Iudex Gundyr leaving out ash and using an old word for Judge sounds smoother/punchier than "Ashen Judge Gundyr" or "Judge of Ash, Gundyr", especially since he's the very first boss you fight in the game. I think it's the same for the demon prince fight - Demon in Pain sounds better alongside Demon from Below than "wounded demon" or something like that, since they're both three-word titles that might otherwise seem strange on their own/without a matching partner to establish a theme.
Irithyll of the Boreal Valley is an extremely beautiful sounding name, and I love the translation from "cold" to "boreal", which keeps the cold aspect, implies a specific direction in relation to other places (the northern valley) which helps with the fairytale/mythical vibe, and the strangeness of the word giving it a bit of mystery and beauty that just "cold" lacks. Though, I'm really interested in where "Irithyll" comes from, since it's such a strange-sounding name.
I think "Consumed King" is a lot more evocative than "Witch/Sorcerer King", especially since those words already have established implications within Dark Souls lore (Witch is used in reference to the Witch of Izalith, as well as Karla, who uses dark sorcery, and Sorcerer being a character class/occupation). It references his obsession with Seath and how it drove him mad (consumed his mind), and it also calls to attention his physical state - a strange, mangled dragon-thing. Oceiros, despite being spelled differently, calls to mind Osiris, the Egyptian god of the underworld (among other things). Maybe that's why they changed it a bit, but it could just be a coincidence. Along those coincidental lines, Ocelotte also sounds like "ocelot", which is an adorable species of wildcat.
Not to mention, I think "Friede" might be based on the German word for "peace", which fits alongside her being a nun, and makes the shortening of "Elfriede" make a little more sense to me.
also, all the properly named dragons being based on english words if you squint is pretty funny to me, and is a very creative way to give them a name that sounds out of place in both english and japanese. Kalameet - Calamity, Sinh - Sin, and Midir - Murder (though to me it's always sounded more like "my dear" since I'm british)

I'm so happy I discovered this channel. When I see below thousand view count I feel scared of missing out. I am curious though why, the dark souls lore mob that lurks in the deep haven't flooded your videos yet. Maybe they've gone hollow waiting for elden ring. Anyways it was a great watch all three dark souls videos you've posted, launched my mind into theory mode. I'm gonna tune in on the others once I actually get started on Bloodborne and sekiro.

Very curious. It's strange because yes, some original meaning is indeed lost in translation, but based on the differences it's also clear the translators tried to convey similar meaning or general message, but also adhere to english customs and naming conventions, so that the meaning may not be exact, but it sounds more natural to an english speaking audience.
What it shows is that the games aren't translated 'poorly', as some fans seem to think, but that the translators deliberately omit certain meanings to keep the overall name or sentence more fitting with the overall theme of the game, and with english language as a whole. English natives may not encounter this often, but for foreign folks, all movies dubbed from english to any other language also lose some of the fine nuances and little embelishments, or add their own, according to the individual language and its internal rules that don't quite match with english. I did hear the same about japanese to english - an exact translation isn't always possible, and some meaning gets lost here and there, unless the translation provides more information and context, simply because the languages don't always have the necessary words or sentence structure to get the exact same message across.
It's a journey to go and see both versions next to each other, and compare what the original meaning is, next to the translated one - almost like seeing a Dark Souls game from an alternate reality, pretty much the same but ever so slightly different in some subtle bits here and there.
Iudex Gundyr is a tough one, because on one hand I find it to be one of the most phonetically/aesthetically striking names in the series, but on the other "iudex" is such an obscure and antiquated term that I initially thought it was just his first name. Still less confusing then "Flexile" meaning "flexible" though, dear god, I swear that word falls into the linguistic equivalent of the uncanny valley.
This is something I never really thought about too much, I was blessed and cursed with having latin in school so to me the Iudex was obvious. it interesting to note how obscure that knowledge is though I think iudex sounds much better than judge.

Funnily enough probably the best translation for the "yo" part of the Japanese title "yo:o" would be "Eldritch" since historical that term was also used more generally to refer to things associated with Fairies/ The Fae, mysterious supernatural stuff and the like.
I could see why they didn't go with it though since Eldritch now has a more specific connotation of Lovecraftian/Cosmic horror, though I kind of wish they went with Witch-King if only for the Lord of the Rings reference.

Iudex Gundyr's name is not obvious at all to native speakers. I'd say I know a lot of obscure words and even latin. I thought Iudex was a first name like Thomas or something. Ive also seen many people call him Ludex, mistaking the I for and L

For me the biggest loss seems to be in Iudex Gundyr. I really never understood that they were an ashen one before us during the fight, only through reading item descriptions.
Other meh-translations like Soul of Cinder didn't really take away from the meaning for me. I understood the name to mean a soul formed from all the previous lords of cinders based on the design of the boss alongside the name, deacons or bisops don't make a difference to me as someone who knows very little of catholic hierarchy. Oceiros is an interesting case where I think both options give different context into the lore that the other misses. Either way great video!

Ooh, Flying Dragon Agheel in Elden Ring makes sense now. The name seemed a bit redundant to me, but seeing how hiryu literally translates to flying dragon, it makes sense now, as a probable direct translation.

I think they could have been working backwards from Champion's Gundyr and wanted both names to be [title] [name] in structure.

Youre right regarding the deacons, but "Bishops of the deep" doesnt sound as cool as "Deacons of the deep"...and it doesnt really matter lorewise. I'll definitely take a closer look at your channel. "The Curse-rotted Greatwood" might be something like "Det förbannelsemätta vårdträdet" in Swedish. "Förbannelse" is just "curse." "Mätt" means full as in "I'm full" or "the fluid is filled with salt," but not "the glass is full." "Vårdträd" means "ward-tree," i.e. the holy tree of a farmstead.
I'm stealing this for my hobbyist translation of DS3. Edit: Though, I'll be changing förbannelsemätta to förbannelsemättade, since it was fed the curses rather than feeding on them.

I'm currently learning Japanese and I've noticed a few differences between the original Japanese names and the English translations (especially with Sekiro as it is more obvious). However, I didn't quite realize just how much I was glossing over before watching this. Very nice video!
I actually kind of like Soul of Cinder. Even if it's a bit less accurate, it still implies it's connection to the other lords and the main character, just in a more abstract way. Plus it's a reference back to Gwyn, Lord of Cinder from the first game, which I kinda appreciate.

Hi, (non-native) Japanese speaker here with some (pretty minor, albeit useful) formal education and experience in translating/localisation (Japanese to English). It seems like you're mostly using dictionaries and wikis (I'm guessing mostly wikis for the souls games and maybe some linguistic wikis?). Obviously these are great resources, but one technique I was taught that I think you might find useful is to research similar media. I.e. try to find similar instances of words/translations in other video games, whether they are similar or otherwise. Researching both natively Japanese games as well as Japanese translations of other games might also be helpful (e.g. when you translate a news article about a pop band for example, you would look up other examples of these articles in both Engish and Japanese in order to adapt them correctly.) This way you can find occurences of similar words/translations and better understand the context they are used in, and their evocative and maybe even colloquial meanings, rather than just the plain dictionary definition, which is not always 100% accurate and doesn't convey evoked, presupposed or emotive meanings very well, especially for languages like Japanese. Hope this helps even a little.

"Iudex Gundyr" should be translated as "Gundyr, Judge of Ash".
"Soul of Cinders" -> Avatar of the Cindered Lords (?). As I commented in your DS1 boss name video, "Cinder" can be an archaic verb, meaning "to reduce to cinders". Ashes/Ashen Ones turn themselves into Cinders to be called Lords of Cinders. They burned, so I think adding "cindered" is fitting.
Curse-rotted Greatwood -> Curse-bloated? The word "bloat" commonly refers to the stomach.
Oceiros the Magic King (???) Considering that he uses crystal magic, I would "artistically" translate his name as "Oceiros of Crystal Magic", which may or may not be a throwback to Seath and his crystal magic...
I think souls of cinder/s would work better

in the Italian version Iudex Gundyr is literally Judge Gundyr
Fun fact: Lorian and Aldrich seem to be named after a bloodborne pvp character created by youtuber Moose Torrent called Loreian Aldritch. It looks like the name of Elden RIng's horse - Torrent is also a nod to him.
I guess there may be more connections between content creators and names of FromSoftware's bosses/places etc. These are the ones I just noticed
Given that Wolnir is high lord in english, and the word Hao is also related to supremacy, i wonder if Shahanshah, or King of Kings Wolnir wouldve been a bit more fitting with his lore
Great video. I was under the impression that the Souls loc department Frognation worked hand in hand with From. (The voice work is only done in English, in any case.) I'd offer that all of these are correct in both languages. Though how well they work is always up for debate.
For 呪腹の大樹, you offer that 呪腹（じゅふく） as "curse-rotted" misses any mention of stomach, but I read it as more like "curse-filled" (see 満腹), or better "curse-bloated" (it feels a bit grisly to me). So I love their rendition, gets the grisly across smoothly.
I love how Ashen One sounds in both English and Japanese. So cool.

10:04 unrelated to Dark Souls, but in Dark Sun, there are the Sorcerer-Kings, who are all powerful magic users who are slowly transforming into dragons. As someone who loves both Dark Souls and Dark Sun, this is a fun coincidence for me

Deacons of the Deep could possibly come from the fact that there are actually many of them during the fight. Deacon might refer to the little guys, while the Bishop could be the main focal point guy in the second phase of the fight. That's just my thoughts ofc

It's just a name (actually something of a wordplay on my real name). I found out it has other meanings rather recently so it wasn't the intention at all ╮(￣ω￣)╭
in polish version there is oceiros ZATRACONY król
which translates into oceiros the lost (not lost somwhere but lost mind(his mind over something)) king
also half light in polish version is pół mrok which is translated into half dark
I think ‘soul of cinder’ is a very serviceable name for the boss. At least for me, I understood instantly what the boss was about, and picked up that it is the unified incarnation of all beings who have linked the fire. Though this could just be because of the boss’s excellent visual design and moveset. I think a subtler name, that doesn’t directly tell you exactly what it is, might make the fight itself more effective. As you fight it, you see it change combat styles, and then finally starts using Gwyn’s attacks, as in the first being to link the fire. the impression of a unified amalgamation of various souls is communicated visually. So while the name ‘soul of cinder’ is worse at explaining the boss, i think it does a better job at describing the boss and highlighting its nature. it’s just a soul, it’s not any particular person. Though I could definitely understand being disappointed with the name, as well. This is just my personal view on it

Personally I would say "Soul of Cinder" is adequate, since 'soul' can be used idiomatically to represent a fundamental or quintessent concept - the boss is the very aspect of what it means to be 'cinder' in this case.
"Of Cinder" clearly invokes the Lords of Cinder in this game, and Gwyn, Lord of Cinder from ds1, and the music and content of the boss's moveset does the rest to clear up how 'soul' should be read here. For me, I instantly intuited what this boss was, so I don't think it is a bad translation at all.
Deacon might've been used preferentially due to the alliteration as well as the association with service. Deacons are helpers, and the deacons of the deep were kinda like servants of Aldrich. Those might be the reasons they went with Deacon above bishop.
I think the name Oceiros the Consumed King comes from the fact that his blood was used to inherit Lothric's blood. It had to keep burning as cinder. Prince Lothric actually rejected it.
Also, when it is pronounce "Youou" in Japanese, the first thing that comes to my mind is the young king. I think it is a name that has two meanings, Othellotte (幼王) and Oseiros (妖王) . Both have the same pronunciation. In folklore, Youkai(妖怪) have the aspect that gods, people, and things have transformed for some reason.
Deacons of the Deep: The Japanese word "~tachi (たち) " does not necessarily limit the target to one type, so in this case, it is appropriate as the meaning of the bishop and many other deacons. I think it was probably translated so that the whole group would be treated as a boss.

You likened Ocelotte to Shanalotte as children of dragons with "Oce" in reference to Oceiros. What do you think "Shan" has reference to. The closest thing I can thing of is Nashandra. With possible links to this being how King Vendrick refers to Nashandra as "Dear Shandra". This could open up the possibility that nashandra worked with aldia and/or the dragons to create a Child of dragons that would propel the plot to the beginning of ds2.
This is an interesting take! I honestly never thought about where "Shan" might come from, usually children in DS are named after fathers like Gwyn's kids or Ocelotte, and Shanalotte doesn't have a father that we know of. I don't know why Nashandra would work with anyone to create a child but now I'm also wondering where "Shan" comes from, if it does come from somewhere (￣ω￣;)

For Soul of Cinder/Incarnation of Kings I would suggest a middle ground between the names and call it Incarnation of the Ashen.
hiryu is a running theme in Dark Souls, in Ds1 the “Hellkite Dragon” is actually “Flying Dragon Hellkite.” So Hellkite is the dragon’s name, not some kind of species identifier. Elden Ring has a dragon named “Flying Dragon Agheel,” so it appears the translators did not make the same mistake this time

I feel like you missed a very important aspect of the original name of the Coiled Sword.
The way I see it, the の holds a great deal of significance in its name. "螺旋" (spiral) is not just a characteristic of the "剣" (sword), but that it is a "剣" (sword) of the "螺旋" (spiral). Let me explain:
In Dark Souls lore, the Curse of Undeath is an affliction created by Gwyn that puts humanity in an eternal cycle of death and resurrection. Those who are afflicted with the curse cannot truly die and will instead reanimate at bonfires. Every bonfire in the series has a Coiled Sword, and every Coiled Sword is in a bonfire, meaning that bonfires and the Coiled Swords are intrinsically connected to each other-the bonfire cannot exist without the Coiled Sword and the Coiled Sword exists to power the bonfire. The Coiled Swords are not just swords that have a spiral blade; the Coiled Swords give the bonfires their power, and their spiral characteristic is a reflection of that power; a reflection of the cycle that the bonfires have a role in repeating.
Therefore, when reading the original name ("螺旋の剣"), "螺旋" is not just an adjective that describes "剣" (it's not called "螺旋剣"). The "螺旋" is its own thing and "剣" belongs to it, dictated by the "の". So it's not just a spiral-shaped sword, it's a sword powered by the spiral/cycle experienced by those who are cursed.

There are many words which you would never see even you live in Japan for long time. (I’m Japanese and read book in Japanese, but there are many words which I see ONLY in Dark Souls🤔.
There are still many words which people still don’t know (and discuss) how to read out loud correctly. I think you did great job.
Also some words are probably coined words created by Miyazaki. But as you know, we can guess the meaning because Kanji character has its own meaning.
Probably my favorite in DS3 is 火継ぎの大剣 [hitsugi no taiken] “Firelink Greatesowrd” in naming point of view. Sounds cool to me (which doesn’t mean I like to use that though😂

Re: Oceiros - I can understand why they didn't use "Witch-King", even though it makes sense (definitely more than "consumed", which makes it sound like he was eaten alive). The Lord of the Nazgul was called the "Witch-King of Angmar" in _LotR_ .
"Gundyr" doesn't sound like the best representation of the kana. At the same time, if it were written "gundiru" in kana, it probably wouldn't be transliterated as "Gundyr", so I dunno what to make of it.
"Transposing" is not really accurate, as the word refers to changing a sequence or order rather than improving on something. But hey, it sounds good, so ...mmeh?

In the Lord of the Rings, Lothlórian is the name of a place considered to be of extreme beauty. It comes from the Sindarin word loth (a flower, blooming) and the Quenya lor (slumber, dream). Could this have anything to do with the names of Lorian and Lothric?
Theory is that Lothric comes from Loath and ric, which is a common ending in English names that originally meant king. (You see it in Eric and Roderick, but also in Richard since that used to be Ric-hard rather than Rich-ard.)
The point being that Lothric did not want to be king. He loathed his rule. Dunno about Lorian, though.
