He also drove down to the south of France with a pair of fold-up bikes on the rear "shelf", dropped them off at his boat, then returned with an outboard motor in the frunk. Aside from some heater woes, it went well, reliable.
Just imagine cruising in a Testarossa in the 80's. How cool and badass that must've been. I can just imagine people's mouths dropping wide open in awe when one of these beauties passed by.
I had the opportunity in 1992 to put about 5-600 miles on an '89 model and it was Wonderful!!!!! I always chuckled about the folks who griped about the steering wheel position and claimed that the Italian men must have arms like orangutans. There's nothing wrong with the steering wheel... you just drive it by holding the bottom half and ignore your high school drivers ed teacher who insisted that you had to be at "10 & 2." They didn't know what they were talking about. This car was soooo much fun to drive! It's definitely a "broad-assed Ferrari" but I managed to back it into our showroom every night thanks to those electric mirrors. The '86 car at the Paris Auto Show would have been terrible with the single mirror mounted up high on the left. I still have a photograph of it sitting in my garage one night because I was certain that would be the ONLY opportunity to get that picture! I took a friend for a ride in it and we weren't out of the parking lot before she started off with, "oh jeez, I'd go straight to jail if I had one of these!!!!" Then she loved it! It looked spectacular, it drove stupendously, and if you didn't have to pay for the maintenance it was an incredible amount of fun to drive. The "$20,000 clutch replacement" could put a bit of a ding in your enthusiasm though!!!
You should check out Harry Metcalfe's channel here on RUclips. It's called Harry's garage. He owns a Testarossa and a Countach. There's videos of him driving them across Europe and giving detailed reviews. Apparently they are both delightful to drive when they get up to speed. The Countach is more of a workout but still very rewarding to drive.
gated shifter my old frend, i've come to shift with you again, Because of gear changes soo crispy Left its seeds while I was driving And that mechanical feel that was planted in my brain Still remains, Within the pleasure , of a gated shifter
The owner is really chill! I like this guy a lot, and I want to be his friend. It's unfortunate that the douchey luxury mark owners really give the crowd a bad name.
Whittle Moore it's An amazing experience, my girlfriends brother has a 430 with straight pipes!, and as much as I love driving the viper and such, something about the Ferrari is just so amazing, different experience
Im sure something on those cars that came out at that time, the TR and the Countach have a specific coke detail on them, maybe the dash has a flat spot for teh lines or somethig? lol just day dreaming
zaron z it makes me wonder what he did wrong to make that happen, it sounded like all the gears were shifting fine in every other point of the vid. Either way if it was me driving I'd be cringing and probably beet red and if I owned the car I'd probably feel the same
They do that sometimes, not his fault. The gearbox was probably not as warm as it would like. Gear oil quality and weight plays a huge role in how well these cars shift.
Avidity 101 I agree. But before he turns the key he he should know the things we do. Never driven a TR, but I do know about getting the trans warm before going hard. I thought he just drove it quite a distance in 3 and 4, definitely at a good clip too. Way enough to be to operating temp. IMO @8:40 it sounded like he downshifted at too high RPM. That's what made her angry. I cringed every time he shifted to fourth after the first crunch. And he definitely shouldnt have reached for fifth, because thats too high a gear for that stretch of road. Again, just my opinion.
That would be the Countach. The Testarossa isn't even the king of 80's Ferraris. Maybe king of 85-87, but the 308 ruled the first half of the decade, and in 87 the F40 made sure no Testarossa would ever grace my wall again.
King of posters that you buy at the mall and hang in your bedroom above your Commodore 64. No one was talking about raw performance. #magicalsoundshower
This was the first Ferrari I ever saw in person as a kid and ever since then it's been my favorite (depending on what day you ask me) Ferrari of all time.
Could you integrate something like a "Motor Minute"? In which no one speaks but the engine/car for about a minute (with corners, down- and upshifting, full rev cycle etc.). Not that I mind you or others talking, on the contrary, I really like your videos. But letting engines (and car) roar and be able to hear it as a viewer (most likely not ever being able to drive such specimens or other great cars on this channel) would be fantastic. Where applicable of course, I imagine that certain cars would not be that interesting audio wise. Thank you for all the great content Matt (and team), I've been watching it with much enjoyment over the years.
Matt. Thank you. I have critized your pre-show infomercials in the past here in these comments. But today I learned usefull and relevant info about DashLink. ... and briefly... good work. Joe.
You should all buy thoose things! One Port of the ODB2 is directly connected to the 12V+, so this device is online all the Time. Makes it very easy to connect to this thing and deactivate the Alarm/open the doors (y)
Only the Daytona was a replica. The show creators and Ferrari made an agreement to destroy the Daytona in the show to replace it with a real Testarossa instead of being sued for the fake Daytona.
Matt, I worked in a small shop in Northern California in the early '90s that sold, among other nice cars, used Ferraris. We had a 1989 Testarossa for about 6 months before I sold it. Your comments regarding the width still make me chuckle... I backed that thing into our show room to put it away each night through the double glass doors. The 1989 was a late enough model to have electric mirrors on both sides. The 1984 T/R was released at the Paris Auto Show and had only a single mirror mounted high on the left A-pillar. To be kind, that is one broad-assed-Ferrari!!! As much as I loved driving it, with no mirror on the right side, there would have been some REALLY expensive body-work in the near future! Aside from all that... there is nothing like the sound of going through a long tunnel with windows down, taching that thing to the redline and backing off before exiting the tunnel. I hate how this word has been so over-used, but it was AWESOME!!!!! ;^)
These videos are so awesome, that I'm recreating the LA Canyon roads in a Sim Racing Game (Assetto Corsa)... For all the people who are not fortunate enough to own these cars in real life :) and who aren't lucky enough to live in California and experience roads like these! +TheSmokingTire Thanks so much Matt for showing these roads... as well as these magnificent machines :)
+Alan K I'm from the UK, which is why I'm making Californian roads... They're epic! Yeah I'll post a link as a separate comment mate... It's a FREE mod that's on RaceDepartment . com So all you need to have is Assetto... It's WIP as it's a big project :) Also I'm working on a 23km stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway... I hope you have fun with it Alan :)
I just bought an 89 recently. I was always hesitant being scared the driving experience would disappoint. This video cleared up that though! What a machine this is. Fun fact, my car was purchased new in Columbia, that really drives home the stereotype attributed with these!
Sounds like a fun novelty, actually really dangerous in practicality. My last car had a quiet feminine horn, you could not hear it under speed whatsoever. Regardless of how much I honk, I could not get the attention of somebody in an emergency situation.
Oh, wow! I got goosebumps allover! Great reactions and conversation about this legend! Amazing! I keep thinking that, when I feel in love with this car back in the 90', not a lot of people ware so enthusiastic abut it as i was. To put it into perspective and the feels that I had and honestly still have, every time I get to see drive and hear about this car is very hard. It's like a child getting the best present of his live and just spill the beans about everything with the most enthusiastic attitude and a perfectly satisfying stretched smile across his face! Thank you so much Matt! This was a real treat! PS. F**k! The owner was right! It is like seeing your ex on the street! :)))
Been there, neighbour from bragging hell and a douche bag to boot. But then again we’d tease him that his wife bangs the help... by his reaction we guessed that may have struck a cord 😬
Awesome car with the perfect exterior/interior combo, driven by a cool owner, who understands it. That guy is great, kudos to you, Sir, for letting the rest of the world experience it. And may it remain reliable!
Love the Testarossa and video was great!!!! Matt Farah is exceptional at bringing the driving exprience through computer to our homes. Well done Matt. Great choice of cars from Vipers to 300ZX to GTR, 3000GT, etc.
The most fun I have had driving was a 512TR which was a refined version of the orig TR. Better shifts, a load more power. The best thing was the non-power steering and the sound. The sound is music. The worse is the impossible driving position. I am too tall, and have too large feet for it, but what a great ride. Thanks for sharing. Double clutching was not a bad idea for the 512TR. Great video.
Love the fact that if you listen to the podcast, you can hear Matt describing the driving experience and when you see the video, makes it more cohesive. When he was complementing the steering wheel, it took me back to the moment in the podcast when he talks about Kangaroo scrotum that he bought felt the same way lol. Thank you for all the cool stuff you do for free. Also can't wait for the boats and watches.
I've driven the one that used to belong to Eric Clapton after the new owner brought it to Perth. Brought a tear to my eye for 2 reasons. 1) The realisation of a life long dream. 2) The realisation of a missed opportunity of not buying one when prices were right and I could have got one but was too scared. I am still eternally grateful to it's current owner for that brief moment in time. I will never forget it. I now keep telling myself that my tastes have changed and I'll be happy with a 360....which I will. But I'm kidding myself. The Testarossa was and always will be the dream for me.
It's a 180 degree V12, not a flat 12, as the opposing pairs of con rods share crank pins. Testarossa myth #1: The Width. A Lamborghini Countach is substantially wider, as are most modern pickup trucks. Testarossas tend to be a bit cheaper than most older Ferraris because they use cam belts which need frequent replacement (every 3 years or so) which is at least 30 hours of labor and requires the engine to come out. Maintenance costs on Testarossas are crazy which has tended to hurt resale values. They may be relatively cheap by Ferrari standards but you still have to be pretty wealthy to run one.
The width is a myth wrapped in a truth. In my understanding the car isn't especially wide overall, it's the difference in width from front to back that can make it a bit of a handful in tight streets and other places. You also need to consider a bit of context. It's certainly not too wide for US roads but in Europe (where it was conceived and built) you could not drive anything bigger than a F150 comfortably so it is relatively speaking a much wider car here than in the US.
dwarf365 and a diesel and a gas engine are also basically the same so why make a difference between them, as both explode a liquid to make power does that sound stupid to you? because that's how you sound talking about 180° vs boxer/flat
Simon Coles it is most certainly a flat 12, it's just not to be confused with a subaru style flat engine aka "boxer". Flat != boxer but flat == 180 degree "v".
Absolutely love the Testarossa, that sound is glorious... Personally I prefer the 512TR. But both are *far* better than the F512M... That thing looks a mess, talk about ruin a classic!
One of the true icons of the 80s, and an enduring symbol in its own right. Check out Harry Metcalfe's video of his drive across the Atlas mountains in northern Africa in his Testarossa, it almost looks more at home half-covered in sand than parked in front of the club. The car is an amazingly capable machine.
Matt ,I just gotta tell ya I LOVE how early you upload. First thing before i start working is i watch one of your One Takes. Helps start my day. Thanks man!
Guy in town has a red one just like this, see it every once in awhile, still one of the coolest cars to see on the road. This is a beautiful one, I love that it has the phone.
I own a manual 360 spider that I absolutely love. Previously I had a 92 348 for 16 years and I thought it was an awesome car. It ran and sounded beautiful. Maybe I got lucky, I don’t know.
I want it, "heel and toeing" and listening that beautiful soundtrack provided by the 12 cylinders, and then just cruising at night through the city while "Crockett's Theme" is sounding in the radio.
Before asking what is the difference between the two, here is a link in which it's explained: allaboutdieselz.blogspot.ro/2017/01/180-degree-v12-engine.html
Rover Waters The pistons in a boxer engine are going in the opposite direction in the two cylinder banks (like in the picture in the link) while in a V12 (60, 90, 180 or whatever degree) are 2 up, 2 in the middle and 2 down. If you're still not convinced Google it or check Wikipedia, only in that case of course if you're not that kind of person who knows best no matter what :)
Mum and Dad's neighbor had one of these when I was a teenager & he gave me a ride in it when I was maybe 19... my very first ride in a Ferrari... ah, nostalgia.
This car is timeless .
008 008 like everything back then
I feel it's the embodiment of the 80's actually. But i love it!
You want shitty fashion? Visit the 70s. I swear, folks back then wore vomit.
Actually it is TOTALLY 80s, not timeless.
The design on the outside doesn't feel 80's, even if i look at it in 2017, the interiour however is 80's :)
Harry from Harry's Garage made a trip from England to Morocco in a Testarossa. I'd suggest that video to anyone, it's an awesome trip.
Also just any episode of Miami Vice, seasons three or four.
GuinnessandPizza That is the one I mean. Morocco has parts of the Sahara.
u have shown me a great channel thank you!!
He also drove down to the south of France with a pair of fold-up bikes on the rear "shelf", dropped them off at his boat, then returned with an outboard motor in the frunk. Aside from some heater woes, it went well, reliable.
He carried a small outboard boat motor in the front of his Testarossa and a folding bicycle in that video.
Just imagine cruising in a Testarossa in the 80's. How cool and badass that must've been. I can just imagine people's mouths dropping wide open in awe when one of these beauties passed by.
It's cool asf now lmao
They've aged well during the years, I love the look of 'em.
I had the opportunity in 1992 to put about 5-600 miles on an '89 model and it was Wonderful!!!!! Hot cars dont age
It made me watch Miami Vice!
Gary Goodlund
20k for fools..
Mindful Music unfortunately, good maintenance doesn’t have anything to do with a gearbox failure
This and the Countach were the "poster cars" of my child hood. I am still in love with both of them, and wouldn't care if they drove like turds.
yup, I don't care if they're turds, either. want both.
Probably just exaggerations. Doubt they "drove like turds"
I doubt it too, I just saying I don't care if they do.
I had a silver 959 on my wall, all my friends had Countach and Testarossa.
You should check out Harry Metcalfe's channel here on RUclips. It's called Harry's garage. He owns a Testarossa and a Countach. why hello gated shifter, nice to see you.
maxxjett films definitely
gated shifter my old frend,
i've come to shift with you again,

exactly
That's what my gf says when she sees mine. Except I don't have a gf.
Yup!
Haven't watched it yet, already know this is the best car featured on this channel since ever
Countach more epic and legendary!
Leuff Not even close.
Another weirdo commenting first before watching it....
I tend to agree...
excuse me, but the drive by shots on the F355 >>>>> all
The owner is really chill! I like this guy a lot, and I want to be his friend. It's unfortunate that the douchey luxury mark owners really give the crowd a bad name.
lonememe i
Agreed
💯% agree. He’s a cool cat.
Completely agree. This owner is cool. As a Porsche collector, I bought my first Ferrari recently and quickly did I notice how douchey they are.
Matt always seems to smile most in a Ferrari. Same could be said for other car journalists.
Damn I wanna drive a Ferrari.
Whittle Moore it's An amazing experience, my girlfriends brother has a 430 with straight pipes!, and as much as I love driving the viper and such, something about the Ferrari is just so amazing, different experience
375 hp used to sound like so much power 😂
It still is in a light vehicle. What is scary is a f150 single cab ecoboost tuned run's 12's...
JM 74 now there are 300hp motorcycles
375hp is more power than the absolute vast majority of drivers can even cope with. It's plenty.
It's 380 us spec 390 euro spec
@@Christobevii3 1st Gen testarossa are 3660lbs not exactly light.
If I could have 1/10th of Matt's happiness in this video, I think I'd never have a bad day again.
Just finished my morning dump. So today I'll enjoy a fresh One Take with a donut instead
Joe Black
Real car guys dump and eat doughnuts at the same time! Save the manuals!!
This guy now needs a new gearbox after Matt driving it :)
Vax Buster and a new seat after Matt came on it
Imagine doing coke in this car
timeless shit fr
only time id wanna do coke
Im sure something on those cars that came out at that time, the TR and the Countach have a specific coke detail on them, maybe the dash has a flat spot for teh lines or somethig? lol
just day dreaming
elianpz I'm pretty sure it does have a secret compartment you can hide drugs or whatever in
If you did a test on the cars, I'm pretty sure a lot of them would turn out with tons of coke in them :D
"Granny shiftin', not double clutchin' like ya should." Haha! Great video Matt
can't imagine how Matt feels whenever he crunches a gear on a classic car that's super expensive if he breaks it.
zaron z it makes me wonder what he did wrong to make that happen, it sounded like all the gears were shifting fine in every other point of the vid. Either way if it was me driving I'd be cringing and probably beet red and if I owned the car I'd probably feel the same
tyler barker
Im going with a combination of not being familiar with the car, and poorly executed rev matching on 4-3-2 downshifts.
They do that sometimes, not his fault. The gearbox was probably not as warm as it would like. Gear oil quality and weight plays a huge role in how well these cars shift.
Avidity 101
I agree.
That nervous little laugh at 8:40 😄
"King of the 80's"
That would be the Countach. The Testarossa isn't even the king of 80's Ferraris. Maybe king of 85-87, but the 308 ruled the first half of the decade, and in 87 the F40 made sure no Testarossa would ever grace my wall again.
just shutup.
Ehhh I was there too, Testarossa was definitely king, there is more than one king in the world.
king of what? a C4 corvette would destroy this thing on a track, and has the same 0-60 5.5sec
King of posters that you buy at the mall and hang in your bedroom above your Commodore 64. No one was talking about raw performance. #magicalsoundshower
I could listen to that engine all day long. It really is musical.
Matt sets out to keep quiet for sixty seconds, but he's lucky he lasted twenty-five.
This was the first Ferrari I ever saw in person as a kid and ever since then it's been my favorite (depending on what day you ask me) Ferrari of all time.
Holy shit, you advertised something that I actually think is really cool. I'm going to have to pick one of those up!
Could you integrate something like a "Motor Minute"? In which no one speaks but the engine/car for about a minute (with corners, down- and upshifting, full rev cycle etc.). That flat 12 sounds absolutely SUBLIME. I never knew. Thanks Matt.
150$ for that or 30$ that I spent a year ago on a OBD2 bluetooth adapter and the complete Torque Pro app...
MyNameIsPhil from what I saw in the video the GUI looked exactly like Dash Command which I use.
Art Vandelay it's just the Dash Command app.
Yep 50 bucks 3 years ago and whole Torque app worked a treat here.
i even saw them going for 7$ on ebay
You should all buy thoose things!

Matt That pre-drive ad was probably the coolest product you have featured yet. Pretty sure I'll be getting one!
Even though this is technically a better car, I still prefer the sexy 80s stylings of the Ferrari 308 (Magnum PI car) to the Testarossa
stock sizes in the 1985-91 cars: P225/50R16 Front, P255/50R16 Rears or the Michelin TRX sizes: 240/45VR415 Front, 280/45VR415 Rear
Miami Vice, 2017 !!!
Fun fact: early Miami Vice Ferrari's were replicas (Ferrari declined their request for authentic ones) and Ferrari sued the show for it.
Esa Edvik made from corvettes! still had the chevy logo in the headrests
Only the Daytona was a replica. The show creators and Ferrari made an agreement to destroy the Daytona in the show to replace it with a real Testarossa instead of being sued for the fake Daytona.
Esa Edvik Ferrari gave them a Free Testarossa when they found out the Daytona was a fake.

why would you ever want a horn that ineffective and quiet
I love Matt's enthusiasm when he truly enjoys a car. He's like a kid in a candy store.

First Mr Regulars MR2 now this!
Just woke up on my day off and I see this Testarossa One Take. It's going to be a good day.
Hey look something that Matt says in the beginning that I actually want😂
Awesome car with the perfect exterior/interior combo, driven by a cool owner, who understands it. That guy is great, kudos to you, Sir, for letting the rest of the world experience it. And may it remain reliable!

what a cool car! I love how excessively wide the rear end is. Classic 80's
"You're here with your *1991* Ferrari Testatrossa, These cars were king of the *EIGHTIES*"
I'm pumped. I knew this one would be great before I clicked on it. Thanks Matt
180 degrees on a Protractor is a straight line. So tell me Mr smarty pants, why is it called a V? It's a Flat twelve, end of story.
dwarf365 and a diesel and a gas engine are also basically the same so why make a difference between them, as both explode a liquid to make power
does that sound stupid to you? because that's how you sound talking about 180° vs boxer/flat
Simon Coles it is most certainly a flat 12, it's just not to be confused with a subaru style flat engine aka "boxer". Flat != boxer but flat == 180 degree "v".
themangiant simon is correct, you and farrah are not. either way beautiful car and engine, thats whats important
One of my favorite ferraris. The lines are beautiful and the rear end is perfect.
I woul rather have a countach but these are pretty iconic too.
saw one of these today. I can't believe how beautiful they are
Matt, was it better than the manual F355 or manual F430?
No but they're different beasts
Absolutely love my Testarossa. Sold my 550 in the spring for her and haven’t regretted that decision one bit.
Absolutely love the Testarossa, that sound is glorious... Personally I prefer the 512TR.
But both are *far* better than the F512M... That thing looks a mess, talk about ruin a classic!
I always enjoy watching Matt enjoy driving a great car.
Nice Fiero.
matt should follow up with a testaiero. those kits were funny
One of the true icons of the 80s, and an enduring symbol in its own right. Check out Harry Metcalfe's video of his drive across the Atlas mountains in northern Africa in his Testarossa, it almost looks more at home half-covered in sand than parked in front of the club. The car is an amazingly capable machine.
my 1990 Daihatsu Charade CX 1.3L 5 speed doesn't have a diagnostic port..
markw993 lmfao
Im pretty sure my 1997 Daihatsu Charade R-Limited 1.3i does if not, I will get a custom one
So glad to see this "One Take" didn't start out in the dirt on the side of the road! lol, such a beautiful car thanks for the review Matt
psht, this aint got nothin on the clutchless "manual" mr2.
BranPSU13 it doesn't even have 3 working breaks
BranPSU13 oh no he di ent
BranPSU13 actually it has a clutch
I'm actually crying
My favorite Ferrari. what a treat! if I ever get this kind of crazy money status this is the one I'd get. Awesome video Matt!
Man, those Fifteen52 Tarmac wheels look sick on the Testarossa! ;)
lolwut?
i see what u did there
I do love that Matt doesn't baby it like most people probably would driving someone else's car(with them in it).
I bet this car still has some cocaine from the 80's in it somewhere!
Matt ,I just gotta tell ya I LOVE how early you upload. First thing before i start working is i watch one of your One Takes. Helps start my day. Thanks man!
Rad!
Love the enthusiasm Matt!!! Great drive.
Not a Saab
Someone bring him a 99.
magna vox Quickly!
Disgusting! The car isn't turbocharged. It's not even Swedish. Plus it has foolish RWD
Looks kinda like a Sonnet III that grew up and took steroids. I guess I can see the mistake. lol
lol
Guy in town has a red one just like this, see it every once in awhile, still one of the coolest cars to see on the road. This is a beautiful one, I love that it has the phone.
Sega Outrun.
I own a manual 360 spider that I absolutely love. Previously I had a 92 348 for 16 years and I thought it was an awesome car. It ran and sounded beautiful. Maybe I got lucky, I don’t know.
180°V is not the same as a Flat 12, there's a small but important difference in the crankshaft/rod layout and firing order.
This is the Matt we know and love... Epic car! Legendary 👌
Is that Shivam?
Haven't even got thru the first 30 seconds and I am sold on the Dashlink! That is awesome..
Not gonna lie, if I suddenly became the owner of a Testarossa I'd do coke off the dashboard even though I've never done coke.
I want it, "heel and toeing" and listening that beautiful soundtrack provided by the 12 cylinders, and then just cruising at night through the city while "Crockett's Theme" is sounding in the radio.
That is a 180 degree V12 not a flat engine. The two are not the same
Before asking what is the difference between the two, here is a link in which it's explained: allaboutdieselz.blogspot.ro/2017/01/180-degree-v12-engine.html
what a stupid and wrong explanation!
here's a better one:
512BB (berlinetta boxer)
"boxer" = "flat engine"
I only know what Giuseppe tells me! Capisci?
Rover Waters en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrari_flat-12_engine
Mum and Dad's neighbor had one of these when I was a teenager & he gave me a ride in it when I was maybe 19... my very first ride in a Ferrari... ah, nostalgia.
Those stupid fkn lines are giving me anxiety I feel like my phone is dirty and I find my self wiping it clean every 3 mins
Mike Arredondo pretty sure that's the antenna, I haven't seen those in years, I forgot they even were a thing.
billy mccabe kinda annoying I thought they where dirt lines left from the wipers
That 60 sec of silent driving was perfect... Thing sounds amazing
Matt...the smile on your face says it all.
I applaud AutoMeter for having the first acceptable commercial on this channel (except for the dealers who give Matt a car for a day /week)
I was getting ready to take a dump then saw this - now I'm painfully holding it while watching this. I couldn't wait, best car ever. Thanks Matt!
first whole one take i have watched in a while, "truly a treat:
Steering wheel leather so important. Great to feel the joy watching this. Cheers from down under guys
I've loved this car since I first saw it in the 80's. Thanks.
Seeing this vintage of Ferrari makes me think of just about every car/racing video game i played in video arcades growing up lol
Cool car. Owner seems like a good dude. Always been more of a F40 guy as far as classic Ferrari's go, but this one is a gem.
