- Should You Add Turbos to Your Super Rare Ferrari Race Car?
A traditional Ferrari enthusiast, who found himself with a 1-of-32 factory built Ferrari 348 Challenge race car would probably leave it stock. But Stacey Slead and Steve Maxwell are not traditional Ferrari enthusiasts. Instead, they built what might just be the perfect Ferrari tuner car. - Авто/Мото
Major props to these guys for having the balls to mess with a Ferrari. That 8900 RPM is just glorious. Awesome video.
Most people would mess with a 348, sadly. Very under-appreciated car in it's stock form. Not saying modding them is bad, however.
telling you David, you needa drive a 9500 limit b18x spec r turbo, AMAZING
Christian Gallardo what is a b18x spec r turbo?
eeeen321 Civic or Integra I'm assuming.
07CVPI Yuck >.
Such a shame that Ferrari will probably never make a proper manual car ever again, gated shifters are glorious.
I know a guy that has a 599 with a gated shifter that he is selling for one of his friends if I recall correctly.
amen brother
Gundemon Nicolas Cage had a manual 599 but he sold it
I have a feeling a special edition manual homologation model will be made in the future.
Yes! Thank you! AMEN!
A real car guy will always be able to appreciate great cars no matter year or model they are
Amen
jutubaeh
no matter the car, if it has a good sound, it will be appreciated
amen to that
+Rhod Wulf yes!
I agree I like almost all cars for what they are. Exept the prius. I think we all hate it lmao
This is what people should do with cars. Not have them sit in a garage till the brakes seize. I understand preserving unique cars, but not every model that ever drives out of Maranello.
They're probably too busy making the money needed to be able to afford and maintain one.
+OneTallOrder Exactly why I find the 348 a tempting one to buy. A Ferrari that's actually usable and maintainable.
***** If that is your dream (and it's a valid one, its like owning a 1:1 scale model of the car you love), then I'd argue it's qute achiavable for almost anyone. Just buy one without an engine/gearbox, and sit it in your garage. Sounds stupid but many collections are made from non-runners as show peices. Even a rusty wreck looks great in the right setting.
sleepybird09 Cars are made to be driven, not sit in a garage being look at...
Honestly this video has made it apparent you can mod and work on a Ferrari you just gotta have the balls to do it, I'd love to see a twin turbo f430 manual that'd be an absolute weapon as well
"ew you have a 348?" "... ya bitch" hahahah
Only in L.A.
Watched this video so many times. One of my favorites on youtube.
Same here, i love that car
I keep coming back to it.. Ear-gasm heaven
At least my third watch, huge inspiration for my own project cars as well.
The launch control scene OMG
Checking in for the 10th time
I really can't stop watching this video. This to me is THE perfect Ferrari from the turbos, the speed, the V8 engine, and a proper metal gated shifter. The Ferrari that should HAVE BEEN !! They really don't make 'em like that no more. Plus anything with a 3 and a 8 in the end was considered a 'reliable' Ferrari. The eargasm factor is HIGH in this video. I am now sure that an older V8 Ferrari is going to be a better purchase for me than a house. To hell with the mileage and price, I need either one of these or a F430 with a 6MT. Get rich fast or die driving a Prius.
Oh no, I just dug my own grave didn't I lol. Not the prius is it :'( ??
"Ew you have a 348" LMAO
+Marcus Mar Very good.
+Marcus Mar "Yeah bitch, I do." :D
+The Mind of Sorin I love Matt.
loved that bit....
I laughed too. Only in L.A.
2:48 Good luck writing that license plate down, officer!
Love the idea, but maybe poor execution attaching that plate to a bright yellow Ferrari. I don’t think the officer is going to need the exact plate number to track down the car 😅
Hands down, the nicest aftermarket work I've ever seen on a Ferrari. Only thing that could be better would be aluminum center console...maybe.
the center console is aluminum. just painted black.
Then....its perfect.
the miss matched seats.....ugh that bothers me.
In a different part of the video it shows matched Ferrari seats. They may have changed them for Matts ride in the car.
i prefer carbon over aluminum but both would look great
Man, that is THE nicest Toyota MR2 I've ever seen!
I don't get it
Steven Slead they look the same
NUFCFTW9 Not even in the slightest?
Steven Slead Just a bit. ;)
I was thinking more nissan 200SX from the rear lol
Some people say adding turbos always ruins the sound. Yeah... right.
H Mack But then you don't get the jet engine noises.
Cockatoo,
Enzo generally detested turbo engines.
288 GTO - that's why in 1984 Enzo only approved the 2 very small turbo's for (my favourite )Ferrari the now ludicrously expensive 288 GTO.
However, Enzo was humiliated by t h e Porsche 959. Ferrari engineers beefed up the turbo's on the 288 GTO.
Five 288 GTO Challenge were then built. These currently retail from $US 7 - 10 million.
F40 - strict European emissions on cars and on Formula One saw turbo engines on everything post-1984.
Mighty F 40 -
Enzo then ordered up and oversaw the F 40.
Enzo, after the 959 humiliation wanted the F40 to be THE Ferrari everyone wants !
Unfortunately, Enzo passed away before the F40 was officially launched.
His dream was realised as even hardcore Porsche and Lamborghini fans love the F 40 and it is the first car purchased for people with money when ordering the
big 5 !
@@CockatooDude i like turbo cars
but the engine sound of ferraris is already insane without turbos
this one and the 599GTO
I should have posted this years ago: I can't tell you how much joy I get from watching these videos, which seem to be getting better and better. Matt, Thaddeus, and the rest of the TST team, thanks for choosing to do this for a living. The time, effort and money that (I reckon) you guys put into this and other videos like it, truly brightens my day. I wish you all continued success!
thanks!
Just last night, I was showing my son photos of the quad turbo Testarossa that was built in the late 80's. It was one of the cars I dreamed about at the time, along with the Lamborghini Countach of course. This twin-turbo 348 is very much in the same vein. Great video Matt, that was excellent!
Yeah bitch, Yeah bitch I do...
Lol wow what an insane car, and Matt I'm impressed by your bravery to drive it this hard. Really sweet video, great job!
Matt Maran Motoring SUBARUWRXFAN ILY😍
I just find it amazing that tuners can make turbocharged motors sound fantastic, and keep the sound of the original non-turbo motor while enhancing the original engine noise. While manufacturers can't seem to get it right. :I
+Michael Tarantino thats kind of the whole reason they became tuners...
Well yeah. I mean look at BMW. If somebody goes Turbo with an e46 you can hear the engine and turbo working together. The new f series 3 series just sounds like a vacuum.
When an engine is tuned from the factory it has just the right amount of boost and piston compression at all times and this efficiency provides great performance but lacks a lot of character. That's why aftermarket systems are always less reliable but always more fun.
i think the 348 looks so much better than the 355. Of course the 355 drives better, but 1980s ferraris are the best!! The '84 Testarossa, the '84 288 GTO, the '85 328, the '81 512bbi, the '87 F40 and of course the '89 348. the best and most classic ferraris were al from the glorious 1980s
+GrimeHubTV and the side intakes, accent lines, front... Similar yes... The same? You are officially blind!
I think you wouldn't like driving the heavy clutch and pedal offset way to the right. It wasn't until Ferrari 360 when pedals were more pactical
@Robert Sacamano A Tesla will look better? Out handel? Sound better than a 488? Give you more driving passion as you drive the mountains than a 488? Wow thats amazing 😁
jippalippa I absolutely agree. I really like the lines on the 80’s vs 90’s....
@Robert Saca exactly. Im looking at 348s right now they have that great mechanical driving feel
It must be my age, but this car is so freckn beautiful.
I find it gorgeous as well
nope, im 21 and i think this car is absurdly beautiful.
19 and certainly wouldn't disagree with you.
18 and agree absolutely.
One of my favorite TST's yet. The car was great but Matt's giddy reaction and genuine joy was what made it so great. It made me smile
That engine looks amazing, indeed it looks like Ferrari made it, and I wouldn't have realized until he mentioned the turbos.
0-60mph - 2.8sec. Damn this thing is ludicrous!
As always a beautiful video Matt. The comments you give in this video, but also in your other videos are just great. You know how to transmit a feeling and give an actual impression of a car through a video. Now that's truly a gift my man. You, along with Chris Harris, are my favorite car reviewers.
I always come back to this video. one of my favorite smoking tire videos!
Can't imagine how much money went into to this build. Owner has my full respect.
My mechanic just talked to me about doing a similar twin turbo setup on my 93 Series Speciale. I've been trying to get him to do this for 2 years since I first read an article about this car... Can't wait! Has anyone found any further videos about this 348 factory Challenge?
The badges in the engine bay, that exhaust and turbo note, the colour, everything about this car is fantastic! Love this video.
Absolutely one of my favorite car videos that I have ever seen (and heard).
Matt's description of the ear-gasm driving this is exactly what I was thinking too.
God I love this car. And this channel.
one of the best videos they've ever done
Yep, I just watched a 12y old Matt Farah. Maybe the best video so far. What a car !
Thanks Matt, great video! The sounds from that engine is just incredible
Brilliant plate...
'Yeah bitch. Yeah bitch I do!' - awesome
You want the boost! You can't handle the boost bitch
Love what you're doing here Matt! Absolutely stunning camera work and nice composition. Plus one of my favourite cars!
Best ST vid in history! Matt stemmed to be just a regular car guy enjoying a badass car. That's what I've been looking for and thanks for coming through. Well filmed, well spoken, well done
Came here to rewatch this after the scirocco video.
I have also taken that path here haha
me too
Haha same!
Thats a cool car.
One of the best made car videos I've seen., The smoking tire mixed with just enough shop talk! Bravo!
Awesome vid. That is what makes this channel amazing. Bringing cars like this to the world!
That sound is just beautiful. Those Lambo guys must have been wetting themselves. I've never actually heard of the 348. But now I know what to be on the lookout for.
They're surprisingly cheap nowadays too, since noone wants to buy them, due to the lack of power Matt mentioned in the video. Definetively a car to be on the lookout for.
Nicolai Riasaka They also have a ridiculous upkeep so "cheap" is a very relative term.
+gr33nspan True, but simply purchasing one is pretty cheap. Every Ferrari has ridicilous upkeep though, that's true. But there's no doubt about, 348 prices have fallen alot.
gr33nspan
depends how drastically you are willing to swap ferrari parts out for parts more available. (a sin to some people, i am aware)
@@ogentor_no Looking at this comment in 2020, they've gone from $40k to $75k for one in decent shape. Goddamn.
I just noticed that when you drive, you use a wider, diferent seat. Not mocking you, just noticed.
It is an unbelievable car, and a fantastic video you guys made.
the stock seat was shockingly small in that car, and they had an extra laying around. swapping it out was a nice gesture. the day was much more pleasant beacuse of it.
TheSmokingTire Hah, i can imagine that was good. Older Ferrari's have so little space it's ridicilous.
TheSmokingTire I'd change the seat in my car for you Matt, don't listen to Bruno. He drives a Jetta.
Max Rudell I drive a Golf, and I love it to death. I am also fat. I was merely curious on whether the owner had a bigger seat, or if Matt carries one with him.
Bruno Oliveira pointless I know. But as an architect, these small things tend to intrigue me. Matt is not morbidly obese, he's just big enough to beat up a small group of people.
Watched this when it came out... and STILL... in my opinion one of your best video Matt. Just loving it!
one of the best matt , nice to see you so excited , great video ...love your channel
Fantastic exhaust note to go with turbos. How does the car handle with the 355 suspension? I can't help but wonder if some nice Ohlins coilovers would have been a better compliment to the amount of power the car has.
handles great. very predictable. Understeers in low-speed hairpins, but that's to be expected from a mid-engined car.
Honda S2000 start button
nice eye.
Very nice eye.
I knew I saw that from somewhere...
I saw that S2000 start button! Obviously had to borrow that from the best car ever made!!
Keep coming back to this video.. 5th time watching since you released it. Wow. Just wow. Still gets me every time.
one of your best vid. Production was great. Keep up the amazing work!
Video being processed... Well... Time to see what Regular Car Reviews is up to.
Love this car, only thing I dont like with it is that they shouldve used Brembo brakes and Sabelt seats/belts. Its what Ferrari uses, wouldve made it look even more factory.
now that's nerdy :)
actually sir im sorry but when the 348 challenge was made they used OMP thats why they are used in this car. and AP racing brakes work a lot better than the Brembo and they wanted it to work no have the correct brakes necessarily.
It's cause Brembos suck xD
Corey Maxwell Didnt know about the OMP but theres nothing wrong with Brembo, Ive used them for years on my Porsches
who gives a fuck lol
One of my favorite TST episodes ever!!! Keep up the great work, fantastic car!!
What a car! what a sound! This brings me back to my childhood, playing with little ferrari cars and making the V8 sound.. Now its improved with turbo's and still got that V8 sound! Thanks alot Matt for the awsome footage!
That licence plate though.
haha! If a cop chasing him was dyslexic he'd have an even harder time reading that.
Might be more effective as an anti-ticket measure if it wasn't on such a distinctive car though!
From the back it looks a little like a s14 Silvia or 240sx
I'm fairly certain that I took care of and drove this very car over a decade ago. Belonged to an uncle of a friend, whom I worked for in his race shop.
It does have some history, as does it's former owner. He had submitted his 355 for Car & Driver to test in the 30k+ Best Handling Car challenge in 1997, then went out and bought the M3 when it won.
I remember drooling over the Challenge car for hours, working next to it, starting it, cleaning it, the sheer joy the couple of times I drove it. The sound of it... with the Tubi trumpet pipes curling out the back right off the manifold.
Really happy to see that it has received a new lease on life. Great work, and do contact me if you'd like. Would be great to confirm and even see the car again. I also have a bunch of pictures of this Ferrari in it's original build, and the collection that it belonged to.
This car sounds amazing !! well done video !! ..side note was great to meet you at the HRE open house thanks for picking my raffle ticket for the Accuair !
oooooOOOOOOHHHHhooooohhhhhh!
Why didn't save this video for tuned? I don't know if i will dare to tune up a Ferrari like this
people complain about there not being enough videos. So we make more videos. now they are complaining that we should make the videos but save them and not share them? I will never understand people.
I'm not complining just think its tuned material, its an awsome car no, and a great review no matter what...
Juan Carlos Lang The Smoking Tire has been making films of modified cars since 2009, three years before Tuned even existed.
I know men, was just an opinion btw I've been follow you since g419 days ...don't get mad ...
Juan Carlos Lang sorry, it's just like there's always a reason for things, and we don't always share it. We don't know when Tuned is coming back, so in the interim, to satisfy demand, we went out and filmed some tuner cars for TST, because people were asking for tuner cars.
Awesome writing as always. Thanks for the great vid TST!
Best video yet Matt. Great review I hope you bring out some more of that tuners stuff ASAP.
Call me an idiot, but i dont know what a gated shifter is.
Someone mind to clue me in?
the metal "gate" that the shift lever goes through. as opposed to a leather boot like you see in most cars.
dumbass ponies...
***** ??
***** No thanks. They probobly jack off to animated ponies. what is wrong with this generation...
"bronies" is a term that under-educated auto hipsters use to make themselves feel like they know more than your average auto junkie
Ferrari 458 Italia please... Simply because the beauty... ;)
Hey Matt, love the show! Id love to see more camera work like this in the future though, its a lot more entertaining. I also like the interview breaks
Well done on making this Ferrari monster. Well done on a well made video.
Nice car, what's the retail on one of those?
smoke em...
8:43 :-)
Watching it again after a few years, i think this is my favorite Smoking Tire, god that sound, the 80's Ferarri look and brutal power.... thank you for this
I love your videos man. You look like you have so much fun. It almost makes my day to watch these and one day I hope I can drive/own just a few vehicles even just half as awesome as the ones you get to drive. So much envy but so much love. Keep it up man!
I WANT IT
If it had black rims it would look stellar.
The black rim option has tires on it that aren't as good as the silver rims. look at the plaque at :35.
Steven Slead You sir, have a good eye.
Meh. I just know the car.
Steven Slead
haha ya Mr. Slead you do.
nah I think the wheels looks mint as they are, look way ahead of their time
Great stuff ! The kind of car I sometimes build in my mind. Feels good to see other people actually doing it ;)
i love how simple and clean they left it but also that it still has the major fun factor as well!
why is it so heavy?
It's heavy?
Steven Slead 3100 pounds for any small ferrari is heavy
I guess. Like Matt mentioned, it's lighter than a modern 458 and also weighs nearly the same as an F430. It's not that heavy.
Steven Slead the wheelbase and track are also significantly smaller
Plus, it's built in 1994. What do you think it's gonna be, carbon body? No. C'mon dude, it's not a modern car.
Good video, but I've haven't had any good luck with a Ferrari . I mean they are fast wonderful driving cars, but how can you have a car that looks so good and cost as much as a Ferrari cost and how can they be so unreliable I got so tried of putting money in to that car it's for sale now I never by another Ferrari.
What model was it?
It's a 599. GTB Fiorano.
Johnny Barrett We had a 599 in the fleet. It was a nightmare. Check engine lights that get cleared only to come back a day later, O2 sensors failing weekly, parts taking forever to get there, and of course the 1000% dealership markup on some basic parts when our power seat stopped working. I would never, ever take another Ferrari to a dealership for anything out of warranty again.
Johnny Barrett Can you please send me some basic information on your 599? I might have a potential buyer for you. I just need location, service history, mileage, price, etc. Thanks.
Jason Garrett It's a 2008 Ferrari 599 GTB with the F1 package it has a 6.0L 48V V12 engine with 25,000 miles on it and it's for sale for 100,000 my email is johnnybarrett13@yahoo.com send me yours. if still interested in it.
This is so badass props to the builders of this car these guys took it to a whole nother level
Excellent video Matt. Like others on this channel, I would love to see a length video about the internals of this car and more driving, but bravo
Launch control in a car with a manual transmission??.. Why?
Whats wrong with the launch control?
Steven Slead There's nothing wrong with it.. It's just that it was designed for the new flappy paddle automated manual cars.. Y'know, they have no clutch, so there was no way to launch them quickly until launch control came along..
bliglum Launch control isn't just made for cars with paddles. The new Viper has a launch control system, it's total crap, but it has it. Launch control would work in any manual car.
Steven Slead Well, you said it.. "it's total crap".. Launch control for a manual transmission car is pointless.
No, when i say it's total crap, i mean the system they put in it is total crap. Not because the car is manual. Have you ever tried launch control in manual? It's just as good as a car with paddles. Close to no difference.
best quote haha
"yeah bitch. yeah bitch I do."
TheSmokingTire this is my favorite, and in my opinion, one of the best episodes to date, elegant, raw, and visceral, Thank you for posting!
Awesome car, bur I have to compliment the camera work in this episode. It's getting better and better. Well done guys!
Ferrari? please, my Honda Civic would trash any car on earth or any rocket in space, I just added a nice 80 pound muffler, more stickers and a very large wing, and that thing Cuts air, and when my Vtech kicks in my car says YO!!!! and still give 800 miles per the gallon.
Moto Virus, are you joking?
Had me rolling at...
"Oh my gawd.......If women knew what that was; they'd probably react to it. "
-ruclips.net/video/6KajL7klumA/видео.htmlm14s
#eargasism. #ferrari. #twinturbo. #exoticar.
Mother of god I want to test drive this
That is what id like to refer to as:
Legit As Balls.
I loved this video so much. Great upgrades
Excellent video Matt!
people should be braver about modifying exotic cars such as ferraris and lambos, why not put a personal stamp on a rare car. p.s. im sorry to purists haha
But the point is, I'm a purist and this car pleases me because it keeps the Ferrari pedigree while being utterly ridiculous.
ClydeYellow Exactly. The 348 was an ugly duckling in the Ferrari family tree (like the 400i), and these guys took a beater 348 and turned it into a 458 killer. If thats a disservice then fuck the service, they did good here.
The sound was glorious as well.
Derrrrp-aderrr-derrrr something something something Nissan GTR is faster
Not even at those speeds. Probably begin to pull at like, 100-110
typical GTR fan, you are the worst in the world!
I should clarify that I am sarcastically making fun of GTR fanboys largely because Matt Farah and the TST crew can't stand them :D
I would take this beast of a Ferrari over a GTR any day
you are so right, they're always bragging about their imaginary Alpha GTR with 1000000000000000000hp. :)
***** Also, for every one-off interesting tuner that the TST crew makes a video of, there are a half dozen GTR fanboys posting the question "why would you get this, just buy a GTR"
...and that completely misses the point of the video!
Another great video guys. thanks
Ive always LOVED the 348. Classic styling and a gated manual. Beautiful.
Turbocharging Ferraris should be a felony. RIP spine-tingling wail, hello too much power for chassis.
un-true.
***** far from it... I'm 22 years old, but frustrated at the way forced induction is everywhere now...
***** its true, the 348 Chassis was not the best in its day, nor was the 3.4 V8. I do love the look of these older Ferrari's though, and can imagine how a bit more displacement and the 5V head in the F355 add up to probably 650 RWHP given the same settings.
***** At least they didn't just throw a huge turbo on it and call it good like most of the forced inductions you see today
David Gonzalez it may not have been the very best, but it was still good. Steven Slead that would be sacrilege on a Ferrari, but equally, it could be quite fun on something designed to be turbocharged. Manageable low power from idle to 4000rpm followed by lots of boost... perhaps have a switch to hold the wastegate open for when you don't want the boost...
This is ugliest ferrari ever built ..
You probably think the Veneno is the most beautiful car ever created.
No .. i think mclaren p1 is most beutifull car
Ahhh man I'm sorry
Steven Slead venenos are a dissapointment to lambroghini
Shut up
cheers to this man, beautiful craftsmanship and execution. looks like a helluva car haha right on 👍
That exhaust sound! And awesome camera/sound work btw
this is such a high quality video i love this video you should make more vids like this
I love the factory look!!! Great build ... Awesome video
Beautiful car. Always had a soft spot for the 348 body style. Love how they made this into somewhat of a pro touring machine but, also gave it a factory flavor. Full of win!
One of your best! That sound is incredible
Love the video and I can hear some Regular Car Reviews influence in the narration, haha!
I'm glad that someone will take the time to restore such a wonderful sports car .
One of the best videos you have made to date.
Matt, this is your best video! What a natural presenter you are!!!!
WOW!!!!!Great Build and great episode!!!!!
