  • Should You Add Turbos to Your Super Rare Ferrari Race Car?
    A traditional Ferrari enthusiast, who found himself with a 1-of-32 factory built Ferrari 348 Challenge race car would probably leave it stock. But Stacey Slead and Steve Maxwell are not traditional Ferrari enthusiasts. Instead, they built what might just be the perfect Ferrari tuner car.

      Most people would mess with a 348, sadly. Very under-appreciated car in it's stock form. Not saying modding them is bad, however.

      ***** If that is your dream (and it's a valid one, its like owning a 1:1 scale model of the car you love), then I'd argue it's qute achiavable for almost anyone. Just buy one without an engine/gearbox, and sit it in your garage. Sounds stupid but many collections are made from non-runners as show peices. Even a rusty wreck looks great in the right setting.

    I really can't stop watching this video. This to me is THE perfect Ferrari from the turbos, the speed, the V8 engine, and a proper metal gated shifter. The Ferrari that should HAVE BEEN !! They really don't make 'em like that no more. Plus anything with a 3 and a 8 in the end was considered a 'reliable' Ferrari. The eargasm factor is HIGH in this video. I am now sure that an older V8 Ferrari is going to be a better purchase for me than a house. To hell with the mileage and price, I need either one of these or a F430 with a 6MT. Get rich fast or die driving a Prius.

      Cockatoo,
      Enzo generally detested turbo engines.
      288 GTO - that's why in 1984 Enzo only approved the 2 very small turbo's for (my favourite )Ferrari the now ludicrously expensive 288 GTO.
      However, Enzo was humiliated by t h e Porsche 959. Ferrari engineers beefed up the turbo's on the 288 GTO.
      Five 288 GTO Challenge were then built. These currently retail from $US 7 - 10 million.
      F40 - strict European emissions on cars and on Formula One saw turbo engines on everything post-1984.
      Mighty F 40 -
      Enzo then ordered up and oversaw the F 40.
      Enzo, after the 959 humiliation wanted the F40 to be THE Ferrari everyone wants !
      Unfortunately, Enzo passed away before the F40 was officially launched.
      His dream was realised as even hardcore Porsche and Lamborghini fans love the F 40 and it is the first car purchased for people with money when ordering the
      big 5 !

      When an engine is tuned from the factory it has just the right amount of boost and piston compression at all times and this efficiency provides great performance but lacks a lot of character. That's why aftermarket systems are always less reliable but always more fun.

    i think the 348 looks so much better than the 355. Of course the 355 drives better, but 1980s ferraris are the best!! The '84 Testarossa, the '84 288 GTO, the '85 328, the '81 512bbi, the '87 F40 and of course the '89 348. the best and most classic ferraris were al from the glorious 1980s

    I'm fairly certain that I took care of and drove this very car over a decade ago. Belonged to an uncle of a friend, whom I worked for in his race shop.
    It does have some history, as does it's former owner. He had submitted his 355 for Car & Driver to test in the 30k+ Best Handling Car challenge in 1997, then went out and bought the M3 when it won.
    I remember drooling over the Challenge car for hours, working next to it, starting it, cleaning it, the sheer joy the couple of times I drove it. The sound of it... with the Tubi trumpet pipes curling out the back right off the manifold.
    Really happy to see that it has received a new lease on life. Great work, and do contact me if you'd like. Would be great to confirm and even see the car again. I also have a bunch of pictures of this Ferrari in it's original build, and the collection that it belonged to.

      Johnny Barrett We had a 599 in the fleet. It was a nightmare. Check engine lights that get cleared only to come back a day later, O2 sensors failing weekly, parts taking forever to get there, and of course the 1000% dealership markup on some basic parts when our power seat stopped working. I would never, ever take another Ferrari to a dealership for anything out of warranty again.

    Launch control in a car with a manual transmission??.. Why?

      @KOXXkomp 10 лет назад +15

      Whats wrong with the launch control?

    • @bliglum
      @bliglum 10 лет назад

      Steven Slead There's nothing wrong with it.. It's just that it was designed for the new flappy paddle automated manual cars.. Y'know, they have no clutch, so there was no way to launch them quickly until launch control came along..

    • @KOXXkomp
      @KOXXkomp 10 лет назад +12

      bliglum Launch control isn't just made for cars with paddles. The new Viper has a launch control system, it's total crap, but it has it. Launch control would work in any manual car.

    • @bliglum
      @bliglum 10 лет назад +1

      Steven Slead Well, you said it.. "it's total crap".. Launch control for a manual transmission car is pointless.

    • @KOXXkomp
      @KOXXkomp 10 лет назад +7

      No, when i say it's total crap, i mean the system they put in it is total crap. Not because the car is manual. Have you ever tried launch control in manual? It's just as good as a car with paddles. Close to no difference.

      ClydeYellow Exactly. The 348 was an ugly duckling in the Ferrari family tree (like the 400i), and these guys took a beater 348 and turned it into a 458 killer. If thats a disservice then fuck the service, they did good here.

      ***** its true, the 348 Chassis was not the best in its day, nor was the 3.4 V8. I do love the look of these older Ferrari's though, and can imagine how a bit more displacement and the 5V head in the F355 add up to probably 650 RWHP given the same settings.

    • @KOXXkomp
      @KOXXkomp 10 лет назад

      ***** At least they didn't just throw a huge turbo on it and call it good like most of the forced inductions you see today

    • @richardharrold9736
      @richardharrold9736 10 лет назад

      David Gonzalez it may not have been the very best, but it was still good. Steven Slead that would be sacrilege on a Ferrari, but equally, it could be quite fun on something designed to be turbocharged. Manageable low power from idle to 4000rpm followed by lots of boost... perhaps have a switch to hold the wastegate open for when you don't want the boost...
