PertSnergleman's Review:
-------------------------------------------
Although Seles lost, the point was made: Graf could be had.
Seles, who's from Novi Sad, Yugoslavia, debuted on Court Central in the third round by waving to the crowd as she entered the stadium and throwing flowers into the stands. When Seles attempted to present a bouquet to her opponent, fourth-seeded Zina Garrison, and Garrison refused it, the spectators booed Garrison. "It's a bunch of hype," said Garrison after being blown away 6-3, 6-2. "She's just another baseliner." And Madonna is just another Pepsi-Cola ad.
Seles, ranked No. 22 worldwide, originally said she didn't think she gave Graf a scare. But she changed her answer moments later saying, 'Well, maybe a little.'
At 5-feet-8 and 108 pounds, Seles has the shots of a double-barreled shotgun. She was the the first player during the two-week event to extend Graf to three sets on the red clay of Roland Garros. She already knows the parts of her game that need to be worked on for another possible encounter with Graf.
'It doesn't matter that I lost.' said the blonde-haired Seles, who was facing Graf for the first time ever while also playing her maiden Grand Slam event.
'I would have been happy to win the match,' said the spirited Yugoslavian phenom, who has been working out in Florida as one of Nick Bollettieri's prized pupils. 'But I'm happy with my play.'
Of course, that was before Seles's physical resiliency, hitting power, competitive zest and tactical precocity took Graf to the brink in their semifinal, a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory for Graf... and at once it was clear that if a player is sufficiently quick and irrepressible enough to keep hanging in and slugging it out with Graf, the champ gets anxious and irritable.
Enjoy this one friends... - Спорт
Because I was roughly her age at the time one thing I constantly overlook/forget is her age. She's 15.5 years old! The slo-mo replay at 1:03:35 underscores this. She looks so little out there. Next year? French Open, 9 titles total, including WTA Finals. At 16.
The first of four exceptional matches at the French open between these two legends.
Fifteen-year-old Monica steps up to the line to serve for the set against the dominant 1 and with nerves of steel hits three backhand winners and a service winner to close the game at love. Legend. Plus, that point construction at 15-0 is nothing short of genius. Nobody will ever have her combination of court sense, timing, and nerves.
Thank you so much for posting this excellent match. I have been a fan of tennis for over 50 years and that rally that knocked Monica out was one of the greatest rallies I have seen. Mary Carillo is an unbelievable analyst and announcer. She and Johnny Mac .....the best !
Que recuerdos ,que jóvenes eramos 😂
Carillo says it in the beginning - Steffi was ill when this match was played. She narrowly won but in the final against Sanchez it all was too much.
The 89 adidas Collection of Steffi was my favourite one, so pretty
❤❤❤
The opening statement by the broadcaster supports my suspicion that the reason tennis players were nice to Monica after the stabbing was not because of the trauma but because she was no longer a threat. The attack was incidental. I've watched enough of Monica's early matches to see how fierce and plain dominant she was. I used to think professional jealousy was too pat an explanation but then you remember that the world of sports and creative arts are ego-driven.
Steffi was more dominant in 1988/89 and still well-liked.
@@carrerau7138 There's a difference when you're a teenager. Nobody likes the young whippersnapper. People don't think you've earned it. She won her first title a couple months after turning pro, reached the semifinal here, made the 4th round for the rest of the year and never looked back (though she only won that one title in 89).
I couldn't give less of a crap that you're a Grafanatic, everyone has their favorites. What's adorable and laughable and sad when I see your comments anywhere is your stubborn ignorance of reality and utter lack of humility in admitting what/who put an end to Steffi's run. If we're being generous and include Monica's debut year--an unfair comparison, as Steffi had been pro for SIX years--their H2H pre-stabbing is 4-6 Graf. Under 50% but basically a coin flip. If we start with Monica's first full year in form, when she won, oh, only 9 titles, their H2H pre-stabbing is 4-3 Seles. Basically a coin flip but over 50%. I get the feeling people like you are largely justifying your arguments with the Wimbledon loss, which is an extreme outlier in their rivalry.
90: 9 titles, 9 finals
91: 10 titles, 16 finals
92: 10 titles, 14 finals
93: 2 titles, 3 finals (in two months)
Feel free to reply, but I've seen your comments on Monica video and have heard your apologia already, so it would be a waste of time.
@@carrerau7138says who? She was arrogant in victory and graceless in defeat.
@@benwyld9149 Steffi is generally considered to have been the classiest player of all time. Here are a few comment from the time of her retirement:
"Throughout her tennis career, Steffi exhibited extended excellence through many a crisis, showing class and dignity ..."
"And more than anyone this side of Chris Evert, Graf did her spanking with a dignity and class that Venus Williams, Martina Hingis, Monica Seles and Martina Navratilova would beg to have. ..."
"'She had an unbelievable career, and she did it with a lot of class,' said Pete Sampras."
"And with all the class and professionalism of a veteran champion, Miss Steffi Graf won her sixth and final French Open title, out-poising her younger, brasher, and more fragile opponent for the Grand Slam championship. ..."
"Steffi Graf exuded class, character, charisma, consistency and convincing craft to reach the pinnacle."
"One-on-one, Graf has surpassed all the greats. The debate for anyone else is almost impossible to argue now after Graf rallied to beat Hingis when the tempestuous, self-absorbed Swiss teenager had a chance to serve out the match. It was a triumph of class over crass. Poise over petulance. Grace over gross. Mind over mine. ..."
"And later that week, in keeping with the class act that she always is, Steffi would place a half-page ad in the French newspaper, thanking the fans for their many years of support. The newspaper, so touched by her gesture, gave her the space for free - a fitting tribute to such a great lady, and a champion's champion. ... "
You are a sad and hateful clown, Yankee boy….
We all know what happened and why. We all knew Graf’s reign was over and even a psycho knew it and that’s why he stabbed Monica. It worked unfortunately.
0:07 Just give us a year the players said haha a year later she was the champion the year after that she was world number 1 the year after that she was world number 1 again it took a fan to figure it out for the WTA players!
No one could foresee the dramatic decline of Steffi due to the blackmail scandal.
@@carrerau7138 Nobody got time for excuses dramatic decline man go on some where with that crap. Yeah so dramatic she was number 2 in the world in 91 and 92 and was going to be again in 93 till Monica got stabbed.
@@DRA25dra
Steffi made 13 slam finals in a row from 1987 to mid-1990.
But missed 6 of the next 10.
Only idyots would deny that this was a massive decline. You are apparently one. And I don’t have to ask - a nationalistic American as well.
@@carrerau7138 It's spelled idiots but lets talk about intellect dummy and then Monica got stabbed and Graf won the next 4 go be stupid elsewhere I actually have things to do only dumb fanboys insult facts Yeah 4 runner ups 3 Semifinals 2 Quarterfinals and 3 GS titles from 90 till 93 pre stabbing but yeah massive decline always dealing with morons.
@@DRA25dra Your review reflects that there is no god , what is the guarantee that Monica Seles will continue to win grandslams? Why do you never realize how cruelly the German media punished Steffi Graf.
Steffi Graf❤ Monica Seles❤
Parece cómo Sabalenka con esos chillidos molestos. Son dos genias eso sí , Steffi y Mónica 😍🎾
In my opinion 1989 was one of the best years in womens tennis ever. Great first match between 2 big champions!
You mean Graf and Sanchez-Vicario?
@@cush6827 Graf and Seles
This is what you get when you eat pizza in France... the only real pizza is in Italy Steffi! 😁
Due to bad pizza, Steffi did no get the 2nd grand slam.
And her period, talk about bad timing!
@@franciscolaprida2133lol
World class athletes aren’t eating PIZZA during a tournament… they meant surely she had a little bug; she’s not bothered at all here except by Monica; as she was throughout the next years
She left the court to throw up in the final. She did have food poisoning from the round before .
what a bs excuse. serena was sick like a dog in both grand slams australian open 2015 and french open 2015, and she won them both
