I think that's the first time I've actually seen cam lift and duration illustrated on a graph like that. I'm plenty familiar with camshafts and how they work, but for someone who isn't, that graph would probably be the best way to show someone. I just thought it was a very neat, and simple tool. Great stuff from Gale Banks, as always.

The problem there is a lot of people don't know how to use one. I didn't until I did my first complete engine rebuild. And they're not hard to use, I just think a lot of people are initially intimidated by it all, until they gain more experience and working knowledge.

My first timing belt was done in my driveway for my wife's friend. I was hungover and it was about 103° that day. The water pump had corroded into the block so bad, I had to bust it up to get it out. It took me a few minutes to come up with that solution, I'm pretty sure my brain was dehydrated. But it got the job done.

Gale... another great overview of the principles of aftermarket camshafts. Will be keenly interested in seeing it run in the L5P. When you finely get done tinkering with this engine with many after market parts replacements - could you stuff the engine into a 2020 GMC or Chevy and let the boys from TFL run the truck with trailer up and down Ike’s Gauntlet in Colorado about 15,000 times blowing away anyFord or Ram in its tracks.
In other words would like to see some real world applicable use of your engine performance gains when ready. Thank you.

Agreed, back in the 60's and 70's we were buying Isky Cams and yes, the overlap at idle was so extreme it was a hindrance more than a gain however, the idle sounded like it was 'powerfull'.
Todays Roller cams are far better in their overlap control as many folks already know, a late model stock Chevrolet Corvette engine can idle so smooth yet the power is in the 400 HP range. No lope at idle yet plenty of well designed power off idle. In fact, almost 100% of the total torque is between 1,500 and 2,000 RPM which is unheard of with flat tappet hydraulic cams.

Seems that GM has slight "miller" timing with the camshaft. Good for MPG, cylinder pressure and emissions. Interesting to see if same hp output is achieved with the 250bar cylinder pressure limit what was "used" in previous dyno video. Banks you could show in next video how the cylinder pressure curve is changed at intake stroke from 60-0 ° bbdc as also exhaust stroke from BDC to TDC with the new camshaft. If you get rid of the exhaust pumping loss should the pressure level not go above the Exhaust pressure(P5) or at least the difference should be smaller.

5160 steel? That’s a high carbon spring steel (I’m a knife/sword guy), that’s good stuff used all over cars. Only downside is that it rusts easily but inside an engine with oil that shouldn’t be much of an issue.

Gale, ANY chance on giving us some in cyl (pressure transducer) output vs crank angle stuff? What makes diesel so RPM limited? Slow burn rate? And high torque, related to higher cyl pressure after TDC, + pressure further into the power stroke because or injector duration + plenty of available oxygen to keep it lit?
I'd LOVE to see an in cyl real time pressure plotted on crank angles during dyno testing through an RPM sweep, comparing similar CI and HP output gas and diesel engines. That would have to include plotted fully instrumented dyno pulls to satisfy my curiosity.
Never had the opportunity to play with modding diesel stuff but thought about it plenty. I know with modern high end in cylinder pressure transducers, it's possible to plot cyl pressure vs crank angle. I've dug up very limited date on gas engines, but single cyl research related stuff. I also at one time had what I considered a fairly accurate "peak number only" PSI of an (unknown) NHRA PS engine at an (unknown) peak HP. Expensive to create engine R&D numbers back when I was interested made them pretty much unobtanium.
An old hot rodder that started in the 1980's. You've rekindled the interest by sharing some, what would have been in the past, unthinkable info to reveal, publicly, and for free! Mind blowing! Thanks for sharing and truly enjoy your stuff even though, now I'll never afford or build a modern diesel PU.
Been following both monster truck diesel and stock duramax stuff. Camshaft swap super interesting to see results! VERY COOL AND KEEP IT COMING! You never fail at putting a smile on my face while watching your videos.
Just an old obsessed hot rodder.

Crap! Ya know...If I do purchase this camshaft It will only lead to many other "required" purchases! Better/stronger valve train items....Possibly a new header/system...Oh ya! The "required" con-rods and pistons...Probably more things I just need!

Wow, the difference between diesel and gas cams are way different. I never knew that. I would imagine compressing the valve springs to the point of almost touching would be detrimental to the life of the springs, no? What are your thoughts on that? Not bashing by any means, just wondering for educational purposes.

If valve springs are properly designed, the coil stress at solid height should be less than about 65% of the yield strength of the material. Most builders set valve spring height so that it is about .060" from coil bind at max lift. At high rpm, coil surge can cause high valve seating velocity, and cause high stresses in the valvetrain. Setting the valve springs up to be close to coil bind can be a way to control coil surge, but very accurate measurements are necessary to make it work.

Now wait a minute. Changing the cam takes you out of the range of being "stock". I thought the rule going in was no internal changes.

Great engine for sure. I have a friend though that has a modified 7.3 in a 97 F350, swamps injectors and tuning I performance lift pump and a wicked wheel in the turbo. My '13 2500 HD Duramax with a wicked wheel cp3 injection pump high flow intake from WCFAB lift pump and tuned destroys that ole clunker.
