Hahaha oh yeah when I showed the show (Stardust Crusaders) to my apt mate and mentioned Jotaro was a teenage high school student, I had a laugh when he replied, “You mean that 35 year old man???” Lol
Jonathan should be swole. He could even have like a classic 1800s strongman/rugby build - which I would argue would look even better than the brick wall build he has originally. Young Joseph pretty much looks like how he should, you can even tell as a decrepit man with "memory issues" he was always big, and Jotaro looks completely as he should in Part 4 and 6. Same with Josuke and Jolyene.
i really like araki’s art now a lot more but the older characters should be represented in the ways their power fantasies were meant to be - that’s what people loved about them. i feel like araki needs to come full circle and be able to have a variety of bodies for his characters
I guess that's kind of what makes crossover media like ASB feel cool. You get to see each character as they were represented in their own part and it feels really cool to see smaller build characters like FF and Narancia next to the giant Pillarmen.
While the macho style is very iconic to jojo's, the characters seems to look like normal people as time has progress even the characters with very interesting designs like joshu, FF, or random side characters.
I get that having shoulders the size of your head is not really practical, but having all the guys look like their limbs are about to be ripped from their bodies by the wind isn't either. That's pretty much the vibe I got from part 8 designs. I'd say part 4 was a sweet spot, even though the characters were not huge, their bodies looked realistic. After all, being incredibly buff might not be equivalent with being manly, but having a well developed body is in no way unrealistic. So a teen with amazing genetics and a great motivation to be strong(like the hero who saved his life as a child) could very well have a well developed body, even if not to huge proportions.

Jotaro shouldn't be as big as he was in part 3 but he could still have been muscular, just not absolutely shredded like he's on roids. I think the zestyness of the characters combined with the absolute unit size of the characters is a really good contrast with each other and felt really unique.
I think it's also important to consider how when Araki started drawing JoJo, he was very much influenced by classical art, so the posing and body styles more closely resembled Greek and Roman statues. As he started becoming more interested in modern fashion not only did the bodies start slimming down to more closely match runway models, but the poses also shifted towards a different sort of elegance. I feel like he's really started to hit his stride with the way he's developed his characters towards the end of JoJolion, and the group drawing from the JoJo Magazine issue 2 is one of my favourite--I especially love the modern styling of Jolyne. And while I slightly prefer Joseph's design from part 2, I think the new drawings of Jonathan are really, really cool. I'm just waiting for him to draw Speedwagon again after 30 years!

On average I’d say I prefer the “twink” style of the new characters but when characters from Part 1 and 2 are redrawn to match current artstyle they should not be “twinkified” as it both looks extremely jarring and doesn’t really make sense considering the actual physical stuff they do

If you search him up, you will find portraits that look exactly like part 1 jonathon, down to the identical poses. For the most part, I prefer characters in the original style that they were drawn in. I just can’t look at them any other way. A few examples: Part 8 style Jonathan is something I just can’t visualize DIO looks good in part 6 but his part 1/3 design was much more fitting 4:53 Jolyne looks very jarring here
I like the the modern art style of JoJo for the newer parts, but no matter what I will always hate how Johnathan and young Joseph look. They look completely unrecognizable from their original part and i can't even tell the difference between them in Araki's modern style
There is a lot more variety in characters in their build. (at least in the anime haven’t read manga) I notice that in Arakis art everyone looks basically the same and DIU balanced it out well
curiously the writer tried to portrait that you don't need to be big or use masculine dresses to be masculine, but when he changed the style everyone started to say it was gay
I feel like part 4 was a really good place for the artstyle, still big to an extent with needed characters but were also allowed me to smaller like with Koichi
What's hilarious to me personally is Josuke "Gappy" Higashikata wears a loose fitting Sailors outfit and looks like a toothpick á la Giorno, but is actually cut like a diamond. There is no sleeper about his build and yet he hides it with his fit.
i've been dissappinted with how the comments approached this, while i know it's their opinion but you know araki has found himself. he knew what he actually want to draw, flamboyant actor physique characters. As the video said before, why he started muscular people was obviously because of a trend and what was popular back then. If you really love jojo for its story, comedy, and drama. you would love it despite the art change heck even happy because araki has found what he wants to draw now. But i guess i understand that when people grew up to one thing, they would get attached same goes for the muscular size i guess.
I like the idea that the art style is a lens through which reality is perceived, to the point that it can even make past events and characters look different. I just love that impressionist vibe where reality is just a suggestion of what the brain ultimately receives. Perhaps we know Jonathan and Joseph as we know them simply because the bombasticism of the style in which they are rendered, are part of a kind of embellishment of their greatness that naturally comes from describing one's distant ancestors.
It's funny how older bulkier characters are drawn more slender in the newer chapters, implying that if slender characters appeared back in parts 1-3, they would be equally as jacked as the others there.
I saw Araki say in an interview that parts 1-3 are based of charakters of legend, mythology, gods and demi-gods, superhumans But part 4 onwards he was trying to make them more human, in both appearanse and personality So from heroes to just admire and inspire, to also humans that are relatable
The buff designs are iconic, no doubt about that, from Joseph, DIO, the Pillar Men, Jonathon, etc etc. however, Part 5-8 art style is what makes JOJO’s stand out to me, the slender Physique and detailed face makes it recognisable as JOJO’s. Having said that, I like Part 8 style Jonathon, Joseph, Jotaro and Josuke, it makes sense, having the bulky figures would clash with the style. The only catch is that it makes the Pillar Men and DIO look a bit jarring given how intimidating they where in the original style.
ive always hated the weird shape araki chose to have the characters in part 5 with the dorito shaped torsos, thin arms and legs, and really deep shoulder divots (for some reason)
When i first started watching jojo, i would be so amazed and inspired by the old artstyle and how buff the characters were. When i looked at Jonathan Joestar and his physique for the first time, i was inspired. I wanted to be buff and strong as Jonathan, to this day i'm still working towards that goal. It sounds crazy but jojo has been a crazy motivation for me to be strong and masculine.
I like the strong and buff earlier designs more. Funny enough I was always a huge Arnold Schwarzenegger fan. So to me seeing how buff and strong a Jotaro type can be is the embodiment of masculinity and what it looks like to be a tough guy who can handle the harsh realities of the world.
Not to mention that the designs changed further, as you continue towards part 6, they become more realistic and glamorous than before. I remember reading Jojolion and seeing how so much of the art looks as close to real life humans as it can.
The buff bulky art styles are the ones I like much better Makes them look so cool Plus male characters just being buff and jacked is cool asf Namek SSJ Goku
I like how in the first 3 parts characters manage to look incredibly masculine while walking, acting or dressing in a feminine way, like kakyoin walking with one arm bent upwards like he’s on a catwalk or something, but they just look, act and sound so manly that they look more masculine than basically everyone anyways
Seems to be a bit of a hot take, but I prefer the old buff designs even though I like the new parts much better. Idk, the old style just more unique and bizarre when you look at it today, even though that was the standard in manga back in the day.
This is a really impressive video -- concise, well-researched, and exploring a question with a far greater degree of depth than most anime essays. Subbed.
I love jojos and araki's art is beautiful. But i do think lately he is falling into same face and same body syndrome, so different body types would be a plus imo
I like the take artstyle they did in the games like in Eyes of heaven. Part 1 and 2 characters are ripped while 3 to 4 are the in between and 5 onwards are lean. I really like how Jotaro looks in those games not as buff as Johnathan or Joseph but not as small as Josuke or even part 5 characters.
To me I always assumed it was because in the 80s and early 90s bulky action stars were the norm in movies but, as the middle to late 90s it started shifting to more slender action stars.
2:54 bullshit, Fist of the North Star had tons of dramatic moments that show the characters crying and that was something present in nearly every series inspired by it
Tbh the slim look makes sense for Jotaro in part 3 (like how it was depicted in part 5) since he's only 17, then he should've gotten a lot bigger in 4 and slimmed down again in 6 after his coma.
i think part 4 is a good middle ground, its keeps the general build of older characters without slimming them down too much. Jotaro right at the end is so jarring to look at tbh
For me it has always been simply an illustration of how the battlefield was shifting from the physical plane to more and more abstract and intellectual ones
Love jojos bizarre, personally I like the manly macho styles like, Jonathon, Joseph & Jotaro. This is something that's needed more especially in this day and age where masculinity is constantly under attack. Theres a reason why Jotaro is like the fan favorite with the majority cause the guys masculine & hes built like a muscular hero, hes a man of few words and kicks ass, he has style but doesnt go into twink category like how they did during Giorno Giovanna saga, that was the toughest season to watch for me characters had horrendous looking attires and they werent as likeable as the character's from the previous seasons.
That’s Gen Zs problem, back the day we just liked him cause he was cool shonen action protag, wasn’t that deep. What’s seen as masculine now was just seen as really gay back then
@@Timmy-mi2efI don't entirely agree with that, there's alot of blood and violence in the show, its not a suitable kids show & for most teens also firstly. not much of a personal preference but a fact, Jojo Artstyle for human characters just before the Josuke Redesign were incredibly badass and Im talking about their faces, however on part 6 and later parts the Artstyle used on humans turned badass again, you can see how the eyes and face shapes change... then part 8 facial structure looks unique, the artist truly evolved and made his own artstyle, I dont really mind the changes on body shapes but the faces for me look way better on part 4 before the redesign of all, it was PEAK imo.

Tldr Hokuto No Ken was popular and changed the game for a bit. Early jojo was literally “we have hokuto no ken at home” which is hilarious considering that modern jojo is more popular here then HnK ever was
Ngl when I first read jojo's part 1, the art style was very refreshing for me, as for most manga that was available in english at the time it all kinda looked to similar to me at the time & nothing was sticking for me then as well. Fair to say early jojo's got me into to look for more 80's/older manga & for more manga with similar designs north star, Kinnikuman, baki, kengan etc. But as to my favorite jojo's art style for me it's parts 1-7 with part 8 onwards not saying it's bad it's just I'm really into the more "realistic" style personally.

i've been dissappinted with how the comments approached this, while i know it's their opinion but you know araki has found himself. he knew what he actually want to draw, flamboyant actor physique characters.
0:24 Very cool transition !
I'm glad you think so!
0:45 and fist of the north star was inspired by violence jack, which is a devilman spin-off
I saw Araki say in an interview that parts 1-3 are based of charakters of legend, mythology, gods and demi-gods, superhumans
But part 4 onwards he was trying to make them more human, in both appearanse and personality
So from heroes to just admire and inspire, to also humans that are relatable
Jonathan in older artstyle: built like a freaking tank.
Jonathan in new artstyle: lean boi.
I can appreciate the old artstyle, but I much prefer the "twinkified" look Araki's characters have now
well said 😂
I hate the twinkified art style
Like I can’t see Jotaro the same
Same with Jonathan and Young Joseph
That’s why I love the bulky builds
Why you guys calling it that it's more like normal human body sizes
@@JodaroKujojotaro in the part 8 artstyle is so good imo
@@JodaroKujosame here
Okay but we can all agree that their shoulders changed shape in the anime is the best part of the redesign
Nah I like the tyre shoulders
The buff designs are iconic, no doubt about that, from Joseph, DIO, the Pillar Men, Jonathon, etc etc. however, Part 5-8 art style is what makes JOJO’s stand out to me, the slender Physique and detailed face makes it recognisable as JOJO’s. Having said that, I like Part 8 style Jonathon, Joseph, Jotaro and Josuke, it makes sense, having the bulky figures would clash with the style. The only catch is that it makes the Pillar Men and DIO look a bit jarring given how intimidating they where in the original style.
But does it stand out in a good way?
It’s so funny everyone but koichi shrank from the start and end of part 4
ive always hated the weird shape araki chose to have the characters in part 5 with the dorito shaped torsos, thin arms and legs, and really deep shoulder divots (for some reason)
Not sure if they’re good examples since they’re quite unrealistic. Like you would need to take steroids to have a similar physique as Jonathan.
@@sarasarita8855RAAAAARGHH I WILL HAVE 30 INCH BICEPS AND HAVE A STAND
Well when you’re ready to take those steroids you better get some Cbum advice
@@Archer170 Why do it with roids when you're natty?
@@XxZaFantomuxX If you want a similar look to the og joestar you need steroids.
Ironically Jotaro was more form Clint east wood then Arnold, and Clint was never huge exactly in at least comparatively.
Not to mention that the designs changed further, as you continue towards part 6, they become more realistic and glamorous than before. I remember reading Jojolion and seeing how so much of the art looks as close to real life humans as it can.
The buff bulky art styles are the ones I like much better
Makes them look so cool
Plus male characters just being buff and jacked is cool asf
Namek SSJ Goku
I like how in the first 3 parts characters manage to look incredibly masculine while walking, acting or dressing in a feminine way, like kakyoin walking with one arm bent upwards like he’s on a catwalk or something, but they just look, act and sound so manly that they look more masculine than basically everyone anyways
the transition of art styles was actually pretty smooth, like its drastic… if your a bint which compares part 1 to part 5 directly
Seems to be a bit of a hot take, but I prefer the old buff designs even though I like the new parts much better. Idk, the old style just more unique and bizarre when you look at it today, even though that was the standard in manga back in the day.
give us back the MUSCLE
This is a really impressive video -- concise, well-researched, and exploring a question with a far greater degree of depth than most anime essays. Subbed.
Great Video Essay really well put together video!
Thanks for watching, I'm glad you liked it!
Hey👋...It would be super cool if you subscribed while you were down here in the comments, just saying 🤷♂
Hello👋
Hey 👋
Buff Josuke is gonna give me nightmares
Thank you for turning what could’ve been a 40 minute video essay to a 5 minute vid
Nobody has time for that lmao
To me I always assumed it was because in the 80s and early 90s bulky action stars were the norm in movies but, as the middle to late 90s it started shifting to more slender action stars.
2:54 bullshit, Fist of the North Star had tons of dramatic moments that show the characters crying and that was something present in nearly every series inspired by it
Part 2 will always be my favourite
PB and BT make sense to have the buffness. Once stands come along, the stands do most of the fighting so being buff isn't necessary.
this is a great vid explaining the artstyle shift keep up the ggod
work
Thanks for watching, there's definitely more on the way!
Tbh the slim look makes sense for Jotaro in part 3 (like how it was depicted in part 5) since he's only 17, then he should've gotten a lot bigger in 4 and slimmed down again in 6 after his coma.
This video should be retitled as
Why Jojo's Character turned from Muscular Chad to Gay
Funny enough, part 2 was both😂. Kars and Esidisi raised Wamuu and Santana together lol
@@TheLostCrsuader21
Kars and Eisidisi are asexual having no interest in such things
@@soultaker823You’re missing the joke.
Turned? This is JoJo my boy. They were always gay
I adore the new one its so quirky and its so special, you can immediately recognize it
i think part 4 is a good middle ground, its keeps the general build of older characters without slimming them down too much.
BASED THANK YOU.
I feel exactly the same way
That’s Gen Zs problem, back the day we just liked him cause he was cool shonen action protag, wasn’t that deep. What’s seen as masculine now was just seen as really gay back then
The skinny style works better with kids/teens imo I take stuff a bit less seriously when they're stockmen still like the style though
@@Timmy-mi2efI don't entirely agree with that, there's alot of blood and violence in the show, its not a suitable kids show & for most teens also firstly. Also when I was a kid/teen I wanted to be big & strong and bulked up one day & not a skinny and fraile looking type, there are a ton of kids / teens who want to aspire to being big and strong and athletic like their favorite anime characters one day & there's nothing wrong with that.
I miss seeing every character as a jacked demigod
this video is really well done, surprised u had less than 1k subs
not much of a personal preference but a fact, Jojo Artstyle for human characters just before the Josuke Redesign were incredibly badass and Im talking about their faces, however on part 6 and later parts the Artstyle used on humans turned badass again, you can see how the eyes and face shapes change... then part 8 facial structure looks unique, the artist truly evolved and made his own artstyle, I dont really mind the changes on body shapes but the faces for me look way better on part 4 before the redesign of all, it was PEAK imo.
I don't disagree with what you wrote but none of what you wrote is a fact. It is all personal opinions

Low key I'm a fan of the ova JoJo build
I like the bulkier builds for their respective parts and vice versa for the later ones
Tldr Hokuto No Ken was popular and changed the game for a bit. Early jojo was literally “we have hokuto no ken at home” which is hilarious considering that modern jojo is more popular here then HnK ever was
in part 5 we saw tiny jotaro and it was weird, but big josuke is more cursed
I would say part 4 had the best art style ever
Why don't they just make the newer character slim while Jotaro keeps his bulky built? That would be better
But as to my favorite jojo's art style for me it's parts 1-7 with part 8 onwards not saying it's bad it's just I'm really into the more "realistic" style personally.
late part 4 is my favorite araki style
Jojo's went from Muscular to Model-esque.
I liked muscular more
What I’m confused by is why is redesigned Jonathan has the clothes of part 2 Joseph? He even has Caesar’s headband
One of the reasons I don’t like it it’s making the buff dudes slim but the characters that were introduced as slim were good
wow i deadass thought Fist of the North Star was the old jojo series, i guess you learn something new everyday.
This was an awesome video!
Jotaro really got nerfed after part 3
They went from Tops to Bottoms.
I loved how big and powerful the older characters looked but I also love the fact that araki is implementing more of what real world high fashion looks like I think that he should've kept characters like jotaro larger just because of the way he used to look just slightly toned down to fit with the new style
Should've mixed it, honestly think he shouldn't have straight abandoned it
What about Funny Valentine's 1 chapter glow-up? 🤔
I think one of the theories was that he switched bodies with a different version😅
