How to Change oil in a 21 22 23 Mustang Mach 1 - Why you should expect a mess

  • How to change the oil in 2021, 2022, 2023 Mustang Mach 1. The design of the oil filter housing and its location almost ensures there will be spillage. I did my best to avoid this and you can follow my lead or perhaps you know a better way to get this done. If so I would like to know about it as it wasn’t fun.

Okay so I found the easiest way to take a oil filter off Without the mess I do it all the time on my shelby gt 500 Loosen the oil filter with a wrench take a gallon hefty freezer bag slip it up on the Oil filter and loosen. You have to straighten a bag every so often. But the oil will run down the oil filter into the bag. No mess!!!!!

I laughed and laughed. Thanks Tony. I've done 2 oil changes on my Mach 1 and it hasn't gotten any better. Last time I thought I did a pretty decent job catching the oil from the filter. The next day there was a puddle under the car so I didn't do as good as I thought. What a pain. Worst car I have ever done oil changes on. Maybe next time I will try taking the front under valance off. You didn't talk about the catch can. I usually get about 2 ounces out between oil changes. I use the K&N HP-2011 filter that has the welded on nut. Makes it real easy to get the filter on and off. First oil change I left the filter dry and the second time I forgot and lubed it. Neither time have I had any issues. Thanks for the video. It made my day!

When you're pulling the oil filter....put a ziploc back under it and put the filter IN the bag before you start loosening the filter. Have all of the excess of the bat above the top of the filter where it meats the engine....then loosen the filter and most of the oil should pour into the filter. May not catch it all...but the majority of it.

1st. off, put a small notch in the defuser pan so oil does not run back and make a mess. No need for your nifty drain extender. 2nd. you can purchase a shapeable funnel made with mailable lead and rubber coated that you can use over and over to help with the filter mess. Next check with ford performance and get better oil filters designed for use with full synthetic oil. Thanks for your informative videos 12:30 . Hope this helps

Thanks for watching Dennis. I have had several people recommend hitting the filter with an ice pick to punch a hole in it and that might be the route I go with next time. I will look into your funnel suggestion and see if that might work as well. My 50 cent drain extender worked really well and I've already cut it so that one staying :). I've yet to hear of a different filter for synthetic oil. Ford has "Performance filters" but they have been selling those ever since I can remember. Like the 80's. I haven't heard of a different filter for Synthetic oil.

I would take that whole shield off to provide full access. Then use a punch to make a hole at the low point on the filter and let it drain for a bit. After that, twist filter 1 full turn to break the seal and I use my finger to tilt filter up and the remaining oil will run down the side of the filter with minimum mess. It takes about 10 minutes for the oil to get to a point you can remove filter without any overflow. My ‘15 GT the standard drain plug so, I bought a Valvomax drain system. It works great.

I got oil all over my face when I took the filter off... definitely had to do some cleanup on the harness. The other issue I had was that when draining the oil, it drained faster than my tray (the autozone can with a tray on top) could handle and some spilled over the side of it... Well, you can do depending on the type of driving you do. I prefer to change my oil every 5000 miles as it does get contaminated over time and looses viscosity. Not surprisingly a place that sells oil will tell you to change it every 3,000 miles. I look at this way. Engines are expensive and oil isn't nearly as bad. Every filter is larger than the factory filter. I was at 10 quarts and on the full line so i would think you should be fine as well. Best of luck and thanks for watching!

Did you fill up the new filter with oil before installing it?

Not required or recommended by Airaid so no. It's not an oil bath filter like a K&N

How’d did you pick Pennzoil, Tony? I’ve been reading some literature about oil additives and watched some of the Project Farm videos to understand the “best” oil. Schaeffers is really interesting to me, but hard to find. Pennzoil is also well ranked.

Thanks for watching James. I've used Pennzoil for years and have always had good luck with it. It meets the standards for all the European manufacturers. They are not an easy group to please. I don't want to spend more than needed to get a quality oil.

How your oil filter no leaks ?

    • @TonysFordsandMustangs

The filter is fine and it doesn't leak. IF you are getting oil from that area it's residual from the change or there's a bigger issue.

@@TonysFordsandMustangs what happens if I lubricate and prep filter with oil little bit ?

    • @TonysFordsandMustangs
      @TonysFordsandMustangs  9 месяцев назад +1

@@ARTEM-ui4wx Most likely nothing. As long as the filter is tight enough. Ford put out TSB for the GT350's to not lubricate the filter gasket. That 5.2 engine the VooDoo had vibration issues so it's safe to assume that some of the oil filters backed off on their own causing massive oil spills if not engine failure. I haven't heard of this issue on a 5.0 but Ford most likely figures better safe than sorry.

Good grief, Ford engineers really bungled up the whole filter change process. Bad access, all blocked in and so forth.
