Literally one of the first things we see Batfleck do is saving and comforting a child in shock after she lost her parents during the black zero event as Bruce Wayne. Calling Batfleck in BVS the Punisher only shows the true lack of understanding of both characters as well as what a 'character arc' is.
Did Batman kill in BVS? Yes just like the first issues of Batman since 1939.
Should the first issues where the character isn't fully established be adapted into a movie. Yes why not when it's part of a character arc that gives the Batman we know today in the end.
If Zack Snyder really wants a Batman who kills, he could have just used Red Hood or Knightfall Batman, aka Azrael

Batman has hundreds of interpretations and it all spanned from a guy who killed criminals when deemed necessary.
There is no "guideline" anymore, just preference. Some Batmen kill, others don't. It's unfair then to say Snyder ruined anything when nearly everything about it has some origin in the diverse comics realm.

Snyder saying people don't want Batman to be put into situations where he has to kill best conveys his fundamental misunderstanding of the character. Some of the best Batman stories involve him being put in scenarios where the logical solution would be to kill, but he finds an alternative because of how much he values human life. That’s the thing, in that story there is no rougues gallery, the only one alive is the joker because it’s Martha in that story. The writers knew if they were going to make Batman kill they had to have a good reason to have the joker alive. Because otherwise they’d all be dead in one night.

Most iterations of Batman don’t kill because it clashes with his moral beliefs and promises, it would tarnish what ‘The Batman’ stands for, he’d keep killing and in his eyes become just as bad as the criminals, or even become a villain that’s worse than any of his rogues. And im not saying all this in a disrespectful manner btw. I was just conveying that Batman’s reasons for not killing are relatively easy to understand, pretty consistent with most versions (regardless if they’re “half truths” or extensively explained) and a big part of his character. so idk why people like Snyder want him to be a mass murderer with no self control.

In other continuities where he stopped - like Gotham Knights, for example - he’s basically just Batman with guns that shoot rubber bullets.

That’s why one of my favorite Batman’s came from the animated series. He actually gave a damn about his Rogue’s gallery. And it wasn’t in some sort of selfish or psychotic way. He genuinely wanted to help them, even when it was proved he wasn’t responsible for what they became. Harley Quinn was a good example. The show version, not the comics.🤔

Exactly. One of the great things about tas is that batman cares. Hence why he tries to save Clayface, his friend harvey, etc. The animated versions captured this quality very well.
I had seen a bunch of game critiques on the arkham games and something they said could be put in most media of batman, "A Batman who kills is boring, shallow. A Batman who's best part of himself is his discipline, good, it puts a complex layer on his character", Snyder has the chance to make a good Batman, he has the actor, the supplies, the knowledge, and he's just making a battle for the cowl Red hood in Batman's body. Im glad Matt Reeves took over, dude had Batman straight up said "no gun" to Gordon. Snyder may nailed the gary stu aspects of Batman ,but he doesnt understand the core of Batman. Reeves literally took everything gadgets, fighting skills, playboi persona..Out of Batman, still managed to make a good Batman film. now imagine the sequel, and Battinson with all the aspects you loved, he will definitely the best for sure.
I’m kind of on this whole situation.
On one hand, I completely agree that Batman shouldn’t be a murderer. He supposed to stand for something better than lethal violence. Bruce has seen repeatably the horrors of death and wouldn’t inflict that on anyone else. What are you agree with his method or not? It’s very respectable and shows that no matter how violent he may appear he has a good heart.
On the other hand, though, I can understand the appeal of wanting to push your character into uncomfortable places. We all know that the main Batman will never kill. So I can see why people would like to question “well what if he did?” What happens to a hero when they cross the line? Are they too far gone and they’re now better than the villains, or can he come back to the light? in a better story, I think this would be a really interesting direction to take Batman, even if I personally would not have him kill someone.
I think the best story to tackle this concept is Arkham City. The game has a big theme of “should you let terrible people die even if it’s for an unjust reason?”
Not only is Batman’s moral code several times by enemies and allies alike throughout the game, but even by the end, Batman questions if he should just let the joker die, but ultimately stands by his convictions. It handles the same in a more respectful manner to the character established in my opinion.

The shot where he used a sniper was for a grapling hook, and another case was him using a pistol to trigger a bomb, Dark Knight batman hates guns like any other batman and sure as hell still doesn't wanna kill, its why the Joker had to finish the job and kill himself when Batman was forced to break the latter's neck

Arkham Origins did that and Batman found a way around that by temporarily stopping Bane’s heart. Telltale did the same thing to with Riddler!

Snyder’s Batman could’ve worked if we had an established universe Batman before hand. A different interpretation that studies the fact he could be pushed to kill isn’t bad, but we had nothing to really compare it too other than Bale and he breaks his rule three times (Not counting background kills)

Yeah, there is a great video by HiTop films that explained how much better the "Save Martha" scene would have been if Batman didn't kill in the movie, that being the moment where he is finally going to cross that line after wating it for years only to be reminded of why he fights and who he is, not going to kill an alien but a man, something Bats would never do.
There was ONE injustice comic where Batman did kill, but he immediately turned himself in for the crime hereafter. That proves to me that people can write a story of Batman doing something out of his character without flat out destroying it.

It's easy to say that when it's 20 years later when we had no Internet to converse our thoughts, so of course you think no body complained, THEY DID, they just wasn't the news or on TV in general (which was the only way at the time to spread your opinion).

Then you get the amazing ending to the great movie that is Batman Under The Red Hood. Where he's get put ina situation that literally tests everything he stands for and believes in.
He found a way to get out of it without killing either Jason or Joker.
Batman Under The Red Hood is *THE* best Batman movie and I will die on that friggin hill. Solid animation, fantastic pacing, great action, and hell you don't even need to be a Batman fan to enjoy it! The movie does a amazing job of introducing the concept of multiple robins and whatever. God I could gush about that movie for hours.
1:05, Weirdly enough, most live action Batman iterations are put in positions where they directly or indirectly kill someone (Keaton’s killing his Joker and some goons, Kilmer’s tricking his Harvey with those coins to fall to his death, Bale’s abandoning Ra’s Al Ghul, tackling his Harvey of a platform to protect Gordon’s family, and crashing Talia Al Ghul’s truck, and finally Afleck’s openly slaughtering goons with cannons, explosives and even a crate thrown with his grapnel).
The issue is, if we’re talking about putting Batman in positions where he has no choice but to directly or indirectly kill someone, the best live action Batman to do that while still keeping his “no killing” rule relevant is Bale’s, as a major aspect of that iteration is his refusal to become an “executioner”, to not kill people who were defenseless (like he was as a child) or otherwise not a threat to him or anyone else due to his abilities being so advanced compared to most people he encounters. He let Ra’s die because he had no other way to stop him or the League Of Shadows, a literal army of ninjas all sharing his combat and espionage training, an organization that contributed to Gotham’s poverty and indirectly killed his parents. Harvey shooting him limited his ability to protect Gordon’s family from him and all he could do was just tackling Harvey away from them. And Talia was armed with an active nuke counting down to destroy the city, meaning Batman had to get to it as fast as possible, even if it meant potentially endangering Talia in the process.
Otherwise, in most other circumstances, his capabilities and equipment allowed him to subdue most of his enemies without killing them, including Joker, who once incarcerated, realistically had no means of escape or getting any kind of leniency from the courts, not with all he’s done. This adaptation of the “no killing” rule is less rigid than in the comics, but it makes sense considering this version of Batman’s world is meant to be closer to a normal world than most adaptations, having Batman specifically being against executing or assassinating people (again, killing people who are defenseless) but willing to kill to defend others in desperate circumstances where he can’t control every aspect of a situation works for that version of the character and the world and story he inhabits.
Affleck’s Batman does the exact opposite, openly attacking most of his opponents with lethal force, even in situations where doing so actively goes against his goals, such as the Batmobile chase where he first planted a tracker on the vehicle’s he’d be following to the Kryptonite storage, then needlessly and completely unprovoked, he follows this up by nearly flattening the whole convoy with his Batmobile before they even reach their destination and reveal the location to him. It’s there just to have a bombastic action sequence with the Batmobile and has no functional purpose to the plot (such as having Batman overhear something about one of the goons that sends him into a frenzy that briefly sabotages his own mission, showing Batman becoming murderous has made him undisciplined and ineffective).
Afleck’s Batman being this willing to kill, directly or indirectly, (even more so than Keaton’s, the other most lethal Batman) also creates another problem, as it opens the question of why any supercriminals are still alive in Gotham, what would stop Batman from executing and assassinating them (especially Joker and Harley after their killing of Robin supposedly was the catalyst that made him lethal to begin with). The only real logical answer is Batman is only willing to kill when in a fight, but this still doesn’t explain the amount of supercriminals that have survived where several goons have perished. At least Keaton’s was consistent enough to actually kill off some of his villains along with some of the goons that were in his way.
Either way, it’s a mess.
It’s weird cause it feels like Affleck’s Batman is the older version of Pattinson’s Batman and vice versa, but that isn’t the case, what kind of Bizarro World do we live in???
I think the ONLY thing that would even work if Snyder is doing this, is to adapt the flashpoint comic where an alternate world where Tom Wayne is batman and Martha's the Joker

Its a huge shame cause amongst the great ideas and cooler directors cut version of his movies that show he does have passion, its that one hangup he has of heroes like Superman and Batman not killing that dooms him to failure as a guy who's job is to adapt them.
And he hides it very poorly, the guy just wants to show death and violence for the cool factor.
The very least he could do is try to work in between like the argument with Man of Steel was it could've been Superman's moment of trauma that he had to execute someone to save innocents and so "never again", or Batman in BVS having the goal to Kill Superman, him being his one planned killing should have had more gravity because its the one time he's tempted to do so after unseen trauma with I assume Jason Todd.
But the guy has absolutely no self awareness when it comes to this its just really sad.

Great video Demi I stand by all the points that you made. Batman is one of the motivational characters ever he sticks to his own morals and gets his talents through hard work and dedication. The Arkham games explore that morality well and so does Under the Red Hood. So to have him destroy that one rule doesnt make him Batman it makes The Red Hood or Grim Knight. Batman doesn’t kill. Period. End of story
Yes he did kill in The Golden Age but that was later retconned and was a different version of the mainstream Batman. Not to mention it was nearly 90 years ago
The whole talk about Batman killing old news. Snyder want it to be relevant because in Batman FIRST conception in the comic books was him killing his villains. Look it up! Brucie Bruce was not taking prisoners. I believe that is where Synder was coming from.
That also comes from a different angle with modern heroes. The no-killing rule wasn't really introduced into comics as a moral imperative, but because it was getting difficult to invent new villains. Now, however, Batman has a complex character that does not permit killing for multiple reasons. It makes much less sense why someone like Harvey Bullock doesn't fall on his sword and "accidentally" three magazines into the back of the clown's head once he's in custody, but once again that's because comics don't want to invent a new villain every week. A hero who kills is fine, and honestly I'd say we need more of them, because killing evil is not an evil act. However, Batman has been built up into a character who cannot kill.

Snyder sounds so wildly out of touch. "I want to see what happens." If Batman were to kill, then he would kill. Congratulations. That's not an interesting scenario. It instantly becomes boring if it's all that Batman does.
Bruce Wayne is interesting *because* he doesn't kill, because he has to figure out alternative ways to win. Remember the finale of Arkham Origins? Where Joker dares Batman to kill Bane otherwise he'll suicide by electric chair? So you know what Bruce does? *He stops Bane's heart temporarily.* That is INFINITELY more interesting than if he were to just slaughter them.

It's wack to make batman kill constantly, because some of batman best moments are when he is about to kill but backs down. Like in batman hush when he's about to beat the joker's brain in but Gordon talks him down.
