Mary is headstrong, however, eventually that barrier had to be broken down. Mathew was strong enough to break that wall down and make her feel like she doesn’t need to feel weak by showing how she really feels about him. That’s why she was so comfortable around him.

One wonders if this storyline with Mary and Sybil would have played out if Tom Branson and Matthew Crawley weren't so good looking in the first place.

Though I think Sybil grew to love Tom I never got the feeling that she was in love with him. He was a way for her to escape Downton.
