I’m always fascinated by homemade sand solid casting it’s incredible the complexity of the artistry and craftsmanship in making random jewellery or rings great 👍 prep
Thank you this is the first i have actually looked into sandcasting after reading a book on the subject and doing some over the last month. ( i went with the The Complete Handbook of Sand Casting which has some good information but is from 1974 and more about green sand casting) you can make a sprue (a funnle shaped object) out of wood or plastic to create the pouring basin for your cast and you can use a bellows to blow out any sand left in it(i have not tried this yet).
The First half of the mold you were pounding sand into, the mold needs to be flipped over. You pound from the back and if your on a smooth flat surface, you flip it back over and then press the ring into it. When you scrape the surface you are pressing into like you did, it loosens up the whole top and makes a bad mold.
Nice video. But I'm confused. When you filled up the first mold, why didn't you turn it over and use that side, to press the ring into. It's usually perfectly smooth, unlike using the side you used. Thanks in advance.
You would be best using oil than water, also if you use the edge of the metal ruler instead of the thick edge it will flatten better. Also do it in sections not in one go and it won’t make ditches in the sand
@@farouqchiznie8740 it depends upon what you are casting, if silver for example, then Delft Clay which is a sticky, oily clay designed for details in rings and jewellery. There is also Foundry Sand which is a clean, uniformly sized, high quality silica sand, used in foundry casting processes.
Hi Lindsay i would like to know if would be okay to cast for example a halo ring that have several spaces between it? Does the sand would be a good casting option for this type of more complex type of pieces?
nice. I have a question, if the silver we melt and pour in the cast is 925, some of that will be extra as left over, so after melting this extra silver again, will it be still remain as 925?
Just wondering, would it be better to leave the wood in the sand until you are just ready to clamp both metal frames together?? Seem like less possibility of sand falling into area where hot metal will be.
My sincerest apologies for not uploading the second video. All the footage got erased by mistake. I'll make a new video very soon. Thanks for watching!
The problem is that gold needs more than 1000 Celsius to melt. This requires a very special gas burner. Most crucibles cool the gold too quickly, causing the gold to harden before it fills the mold. So it's not that easy to get the right equipment and especially that is not cheap.
Never think of sand-casting jewelry. Sand casting is used for large steel parts in the industry. Jewelry needs a shiny surface and that is not achieved through sand-casting. You should only use silicone to cast jewelry.
It depends on how detailed the ring is. Since you will essentially be making a two part mold, there will always be a small dividing line in between the two parts once cast. I find that thick and detailed ring molds work the best for this method of casting.
Well it may produce results but this is far from how a mold maker is trained to make a mold. Plus you run the risk of damaging the metal mold with a hammer. Use a piece of wood instead. I guess the jewelry industry does stuff different
With modern technology I don't know anybody in the jewellery trade that would use such an archaic method of casting. Surely a more simple methods to produce a ring blank would be to form the ring from a metal bar round a triblet and then to file the shape , why faff around with this method. In the time you spent producing a mould i in sand you could have hand produced a ring. As they say time is money.
You brought up some really great points. It is much quicker to hand fabricate a ring. Sand casting has it's place in the jewelry world for a few other reasons which I would like to point out. 1. It's a good method for someone who doesn't have access to lost wax casting tools 2. It's a good way to reuse metals, including a customer's sentimental gold jewelry 3. The jewelry I often make is from wax carvings and the sand leaves an interesting texture behind. The great thing about craft is there are many ways to do one thing, and we should always be open to learning and exploring new and old techniques.

I'm learning thanks for the video,, I enjoyed it
Thank you for the positive feedback!
Videos like this are why my foundry is so busy!

Baby powder works the same way.
Would it not be easier and "better" to rub the sand/clay through a sifter or a fine grater?
A sand riddle
Wow.. high Lindsay.. so enchanting..
thank ya for this missy, ill be getting some sand casting equipment soon and itll be fun to see if its something im into 👍
Thank you for your time and sharing your knowledge.
I've just started tinkering with metal work, I was trying to cast a wax carving I made a while back but it won't even make a dent its like cement
Great video! Would it be easier to break up the sand with a rolling pin?
Great demonstration of manual molding, but thats a big flask for a tiny ring! Is this oil bonded sand?
Great video! Please drop part 2, thanks!!!
Thank you! I'm working on it 😃
Hey Lindsey that was very cool think you should have more subs 😎🤠🤩👍

Good evening my love, I am from Algeria, I like your skill, I want to learn, thank you
Hello very useful video what type of sand or brand?
With like 80%of people being allergic to Nickle why use that in a ring use palladium

And what kind of sand is used kindly?

Could you give us tips on what sand to use or make?
hi, where, when and from whom did you learn casting in sand technique ?
hello, great video, but I dont understand why I have so much white smoke when I do it
Do I need to use a big torch or just a normal hand torch that’s I’ve used in metalsmithing?
Howdy! What kind of sand are you using and do you have a link for the frame you used here? Thanks for the video!
Nice love from México!!!❤🇲🇽❤
Hi I’m just getting in to this as a hobby. How is the best way to store my resin bonded silica sand please ? 🙏🏽
Very good
what happened to the second video ?
You didn’t tap the ring first to loosen it?
Thank you ❤❤ dear friend
Hi it will be my first time casting silver how long do j need to heat the silver before i pour it in the cast

Yes it'll still be 925.
Nice new to me holes for air escape

That's a great idea!
Can you use silicone instead of the sand
What sand do you use it has a great consistency
seems she is buying this sand at an online shop
May I ask is pewter good for rings?
Hello dear, what is this sand called?
Thank you
Hi can someone tell me why my sand flows out when i make the air vents? How can i stick the sand in?
Hi! Thanks for this tutorial, it was super helpful. :) Do you have a place to watch the second part where you poor the gold?

Can you cast any type of ring using this method

thank you so much!!! =)
Hello, what type of sand is this??
I saw you break a little line off. I’m calling El Chapo now and telling him you’re pinching.
You're funny girl🤠 i like you lol
Part 2 is up! ruclips.net/video/8uE4TcZjlxE/видео.html
You gotta pin it so it's easy to find
What kind of sand
Delft Clay
* razor thin, 11:36 as long as the gas can escape
Bel video
New friend here I also cast aswell

Do both accommodate the rounded comfort grip?
Constructive criticism. You are taking something simple and making it complicated.
Bonjour bijouteries comment allez-vous, excuse votre numéro
Almoat 16 minutes 😢 ...
Did you really say “casted”
👎
Thanks for a lovely video! :)
iam not untrastend your languege
I used casting my " Wax "
Well that was disappointing, what happened to seeing the results🥴
