What memories this bright back to me. I have not rammed up a mold in the foundry since I was in middle school metal shop in 1969. Lots of fun to see how things turn out. Great video!
I think back to my high school shop from time to time. Hard to believe this is not a part of everyone's education. Thankfully RUclips allows exposure for an education in making to those who are inclined. Thanks for your comment!
Brian, great from start to finish. My only advice as an experienced bronze caster: casting with no further protection as leather gloves and helmet is really risky. Just a little gas explosion in the melt, a cracked crucible during transport from furnace to mould and u have a serious incident. Wear leather jacket, leather pants and strong shoes. It is just a short moment to wear these uncomfortable caster clothes, but u will really protect yourself. Keep up the good work. cheers Herri
just have watched all your videos and was really concerned how u started to cast. U take care for all the details, which is really amazing to see. I have cast a lot bronze, bell bronze, zine copper alloys in my live as artist in Germany. I have learned casting in Italy and saw also during 20 years some serious accidents. Especially casting in the open and not in a shop. Many part time caster oversee the danger of gas explosions and heat radiation. ( think of rain drops that fall into your melt. Jesus.... or especially lost wax casting when the wax wasn't completely burned out. That's a bomb. Luckily u are right now only sand casting, so this problem doesn't occur. Better be double safe. Please!!! U are casting alone, then u need to be fully concentrated, always... I live now since a long time in China and do other stuff like CNC and prototyping / designing. Any help or advice, just drop me a note :-). All the best... Herri
Bronze is hotter and therefore safer to a small extent anyway. Bronze will tend to bounce off you ( after burning the crap out of you ) while Aluminum is far more dangerous. This is because it has a cooler pour temperature, strangely enough. It tends to stick to you when it hits giving you a far more catastrophic burn. After sticking it continues to transfer a huge amount of heat into you. I'm not saying bronze can't stick, but aluminum is far worse. Good job and take care my friend, from a fellow foundry guy.
I bought his foundry plans from his website, unfortunately I’m a truck driver and between places since I’m never home anyway so I haven’t been able to build it yet, do have 2 kegs though ready to go and ceramic fire cloth. But the plans are well detailed and I would recommend
I've been researching aluminium melting for two weeks now and I never realised you could degas using sodium carbonate! I read up on the method that industrial foundries use to degass, using helium argon or nitrogen, and I figured that was something I wouldn't be able to do because I'd have to buy welding tanks of nitrogen and a special degassing wand that wouldn't be available in a small size for these sorts of forges anyway. So glad to have stumbled on this video and found that there's a far easier way to do it!
Very clever building the flask with the rebate register, and having one corner unlock-able, to allow it to be removed from around the block of casting sand.
The aluminum project you made is the best thing I have every seen in youtube. Compare to others, yours are most professional looking and incredibly awesome. SUBSCRIBED! Keep working more project and I will like them every time.
Wow! I just loved the process. Wonderful work of art. A reflection of how life is. We have to go through various, at times unpleasant situations that (chiseling, burning, cooling, adding, sometimes subtracting). These finally refine and mould us to attain perfection!
What a wonderfully finished and refined aluminum casting! This is very refreshing amongst the simple pour and wire wheel videos. I’ll be happy to try this at 100 subscribers 😂
Reminds me of Metals Shop in 1971. My "buddy" dropped a shotgun primer into the sand mold the teacher had built as a demo for casting. Good thing the teacher was wearing a full hood, face shield, gloves and apron. When the aluminum poured into the mold, the primer went off and shot a spray of liquid aluminum right toward his face. That was the last year Metals Shop was available.
A few days ago saw the same process by a Indian worker, no fancy equipment just his bare hands and brass from old vessels, and cast the most intricate idols, that's workmanship
Spoony Like you said he should've given a clear sealer coat , much like after painting on pottery they glaze it a to protect the paint etc so are spot on spoony because that's exactly what I do when spraying metals a coat of lacquer to finish it 👍
I found a rusty brown bike horn at a flea market and a brought it home I was just thinking I would clean it up and paint it. I cleaned it up on the wire wheel and the metal shined right back up. I put a thick coat of clear over it and to this day it's on my bike and it still shiny I put it on an old bike that has a lot of old blue accessories on it.
Longer runner and to be a bit more diligent about removing sand particles. Also could plan to remove more face on the piece until the voids are gone. I could have also braised them full and sanded flat.
No have the finish on the bottom of the mould and the back of the plate as the top then inclusions willl be on the back of the plate as they will float cleaner finish on the face this way
Right now. Most CNC that cost more than a car now can do straight to the aluminum carving and no need to cast it..But his technique is far way human touch, than a machine touch and the overall finish product will and shall always be good to look at knowing how many precious hours and process of making it, that when someone saw it and ask "how'd you do that, was it by traditional way?" and then answered "YES" I guess the asking person would not believe it. great work there!!! Envy here, been longing to have such things, tools, and everything to make one...unfortunately, I was born with nothing. Plain and simple human being. :(
A few thoughts. The finish side of the mold cavity should face down when possible. The reason is any debris or dross will tend to float. If the finish side is down the debris will end up in the back of the plaque. It's not a big deal but, it helps keep the plaque face cleaner. Cut your sprue and riser holes before you pull the pattern. Use a sharpened welding rod to vent the sand in the cope before pulling the pattern. The deeper your flask is, increases the need for a slightly tapered rammer. All small things that will help. Other than that, good job.
dbaecht He had the face of the plaque at the bottom. The overflow riser was on the back of the plaque. The fill riser was on the side. Just as you suggested. See 9:00
+Brian Oltrogge Wonderful work. I'm about to build your Grunblau machine I think. Been thinking about it for a while - got your plans from you :) Wondering if I can modify that machine (make it wider)
You can make it wider, it won't be as efficient from a sheet yield standpoint. You won't be able to do full 4x8 without a seam though. I found out that the reverse was true for me after looking at my spoil board. I opted for a slightly bigger than quarter sheet for the Platform. Anything smaller is useless, anything bigger is a waste of space for me.
What a superb video! Glad to see that I'm subscriber 81,400 - can't wait to go through your other videos after finding this one! Thanks for the upload! :)
Turned out very nice but your can control when you spray painted was making me cringe. Start and stop the flow of paint off the project, that way you won't get the heavy blotches. I noticed some of them when you did the final close up. Personally, I would have done it in satin but that is just me.
Fascinating, I didn't realise I could hold my breath for so long. I have to subscribe now as your the first to get my full attention in any clip. Thank you.

Beautiful work!! Great job!!! Polish it bright as possible and Spray the final high polished aluminum with polyurethane clear coat and it will last forever. Then sand and polish the paint and it will get brighter!! Sodium carbonate bubbles WILL NOT remove hydrogen. Bubble argon gas in small bubbles 2mm thru the aluminum to remove hydrogen gas.

Very good, You even took out the Hydrogen, even Holley (the carb people) don't do that and it shows if you section one of their carb bases. Most people don't know that aluminum can absorb large amounts of hydrogen gas and it forms little voids in the casting.
