- In this video Allen Newberry J.S. will be showing how to cast silver by recycling silver scraps and silver coins to make a silver ring using delft clay casting. Which is basically sand casting with a finer media. It can be used to make jewelry much faster than lost wax casting. This is a fun technique that doesn't require a large investment to get started with. It will allow you to take broken or unwanted jewelry and recycle it into new jewelry or other metal objects. It can be done with gold, silver, brass, bronze, copper, platinum, etc. It could be used to make knife hardware such as guards or butt plates. This is one of the most fun tools for upcycling jewelry and scrap precious metals.

I've tinkered with sand casting, but never heard of this delft clay. Very interesting, sounds like you can get a lot better detail with this stuff.
That is what I have heard. It is more expensive than the other media. But, if spending a bit more gives me a better product I am all for it.

Just wondering, would it be better to leave the wood/ring in the sand until you are just ready to clamp both metal frames together?? Seems like less possibility of sand falling into area where hot metal will be.

It was a great tutorial on casting ! what grit sand paper do you use for your sander? i am new to this and would like to try my hand at it this winter. Also wondering what kind of torch head would be best to use for the melting process.
I use several different grits 36, 60, 120, 220, (320 or 400).

Hi i have a question i struggle to sand cast my ring the ring is 1.2mm think, the silver do not want to go all around and all sprouts and channels is clear, do you thing the casting powder can cause a problem
Hello Allen, have you attempted to create a hollow form type ring shape (not hollow though, same shape but solid) with this method instead of plain Jane wedding band? I’m currently attempting as I speak...I will let you know how it comes out, I did to have make some extra adjustments in addition to the standard method, I’m getting ready to pour in the mold now... would be great to know your thoughts about this...thx

I sometime have mess up too. Things to look into are adequate ent holes for the air and trying to be sure that your temperatures are correct.

I've duplicated a number of keys in bronze this way. Some key blanks are not to be found at the hardware store.

I'm curious if they are big enough for pommels. I could easily see a knife pommel, but not sure about much bigger.
I have not tried it. But, I got this size so that it would be possible to make knife parts.

I don’t know. But, you may be able to just make the copy using the felt clay. Depending on the ring’s shape.
I found a product on Amazon (UK) and noticed that they've nabbed a screenshot from your video to use in their advert...

Can you use bulkier, more intricate items? I have a really bulky gold ring I'd like to replicate as a lot of people comment on it and would like one and I have a lot of scrap gold
This method will reproduce patterns on the top and bottom of an object but not on the sides. An intricate pattern there would tear out when you separate the mold.
If I’m using this wax and put some details on it eg a design on the front does the clay pick it up or not
It doesn’t do undercuts
Like Chester said. It will not do undercuts. But, it can pick up details if they are on the top or bottom of a piece.
Does this come out high detail for bigger 3D objects
It is more detailed than regular sand casting. But, not as detailed as lost wax casting.
Great video but I have a question that how long can we keep on using that burner or torch?I mean can we keep on igniting it for hours or do we need to give it a rest?it is dangerous to keep it on ignition for hours because it could get too hot or can we use it for as long as we want?
I don’t think that they are really designed for constant use. But, I don’t really know.

Can you craft a ring from beeswax and then cast it using this method, or does it need to be a special type of wax?
Yes. Since you take the object out before casting you could make it out of just about anything. I have even used my wedding ring.

When I go to slide off the top half of the mould, the frame slides away without the sand, the same keeps it’s shape it just comes away as a solid piece separately. But if I put too much pressure on it, the sand sticks to the layer below and the same thing happens, the frame comes off on its own.
Are you using talc in between the top and bottom and bottom molds?

If your dish is already glazed up with borax ,when melting metals do you still need to sparkle borax on it ?
Yes you want some to serve as flux.
@David Chatterton interesting. Here in Scandinavia none of the goldsmiths I know will recycle gold from an heirloom piece and use that exact gold to make a new piece, as they all agree the gold tends to loose it’s quality and karat and becomes contaminated with air. Instead all the ld gold you leave is recycled by companies that do only this insuring the refined quality and karat grade, reselling the finiahed gold to the jewelsmiths for a discounted price. Ie all gold from tooth fillings to junk jewelry is done at these places and recycled, meaning your finished product isn’t actually made of the exact same gold you gave the goldsmith. Nobody I talked to says it’s worth doing casting like thos with 18k gold, and if I understand correctly it also has to do with the overall durability and workability (if not simply casting) of the gold with microscopic air inclusions. I didn’t know silver has a greater tendency to be contaminated as it’s always recycled one way or another by silversmiths themselves, made me surprized. I guess it’s the value of the gold that has people refuse to use the method of recycling it themselves…
As much as I understand gold is recycled all the time bc of it’s value at these specialty services it’s sortof a pity using an heirloom to make another isn’t done for sentimental reasons. Even if you get compensated for the gold you turn in when having something made, jewelry is mostly sentimental in value anyway, or mainly no matter the actual cost. I’d like to try casting in gold from old broken rings and chain I have but feel a bit hesitant due to this feedback I’ve gotten. You seem to have experience, I’d appreciate your take on this, and anyone else who works with gold!

just use biulding sand but sieve it over the object 1st b4 using the rest of the sand as normal 4get the hammer get a wooden mallet

The delft clay is reusable. You just throw out the burned part right around the piece that you make. I think it has some sort of oily substance already in it. You do not add water.

Riogrande is amazing for actual goldsmithing/silversmithing equipment, but not so much for casting. They don't sell this flask mold. The dough scraper (ruler thing) is actually a kitchen utensil but perfect for the job. Check Amazon for both of these items

You’re doing it wrong...
Your first half of frame should be flipped the other way when you pack the sand, that way the baking sheet makes a perfectly flat edge.
After you fill it flip it over and do the steps
u can tell he knows nothing about moulding
If you're ambitious you can make your own casting sand and save some money.
The delft clay is finer than what I would be able to make. But, I have seen folks making their own for sand casting.
