The Little Rogues: Vermin of Kaimere

- Wherever humans settle down, it's a safe bet that local animals will sneak inside to take a little off the top. Although some of these incursions can be violent and devastating, today we focus on what Kiamerans call 'little rogues': smaller varmints that are more annoying than destructive.
Songs of the Inland Sea is the sequel to Tales of Kaimere! It is a nautical anthology, with all six short stories and novellas taking place in aquatic settings. There are heists on a ship, a desperate chase through a marsh, and a survival story from the perspective of a killer whale!

I like the idea that kaimerans, themselves surrounded by vicious megafauna, almost feel a sort of mildly resentful kinship with these little critters.
Rat: (stuffing it's face with corn)
Earthling: "doesn't that make you angry?"
Kaimeran: "i mean he do be thugging it out, he's just like me fr"
Pov : you are a farmer chilling in the cellar alone and suddenly a hog sloth just comes out of the ground unexpectedly in a gluttonous rage
Pure terror and fear 💀
Honestly a terrifying prospect. I wanted to draw a sketch of a person getting something from the cellar and realizing they're not alone, but as always I ran out of time lol

Fun fact:
Rabbits are native to Spain, but the Romans thought they were very tasty and liked the fact that they bred quickly, so exported them around their empire. 2000 years later in the British empire did the same thing bringing them to Australia and America.
It definitely good to know that that world is not free of vermin as well.
The sloth hound size compared to the Hog makes the hound's role make more sense.
I knew that the moment you brought passenger pigeons to kaimere that it'll be a pest to crops like it did back on our world's history. And I can't wait to see the video about the passenger piegon.
Yeah I should have compared the sloth hound to the sloth, but it's still much more practical in proper context than when I had only designed the larger mylodonts.
@@TalesofKaimere true and I bet in your passenger pigeon video that some are humans in the assembly would probably want to bring some of them to Earth and just saying that it was resurrected via cloning?
@@amm019 There is a segment on the Rewilding Initiative which seeks to reintroduce many recently extinct Earth fauna with Kaimeran counterparts. Cloning is a possible explanation they could use. There are a number of issues with the initiative that I'll get into during the episode, not the least of which is the possibility of disease and parasite transmission. It's basically impossible to do while Kaimere is still in secret thanks to how sophisticated conservation awareness and genetic testing is, so the initiative is unfortunately on an indefinite hold.
@@TalesofKaimere all that definitely true and good to know that there is a rewilding segment in the assembly and mention in the future video. One way I could think of that day could be able to get past the diseases and parasites ordeal is assembly clone wanted the passenger pigeons from that world. Or, since calling bird has not been done yet, you could basically have an embryonic of the passenger pigeon merge with a regular pigeon's reproductive system, essentially turning it into a chimera, and have them reproduce the regular way and you will get Pastor pigeons out through a unquestionable method
@@TalesofKaimere hi there! I like your series and was wondering what if this could turn into a video game!
The inclusion of some common small animals that live close to or within settlements instantly adds so much to the world that you're developing. Like I can now imagine walking down the streets of a Kaimeran ring town and in addition to everything else maybe I would see a rat running across an alley, or a small flock of pigeons on a rooftop. Perhaps a dog will start backing from around the corner and it will turn out that a sloth has snuck into the town by digging under the wall. Or I'll go out into a field and witness the takeoff of a massive flock of passenger pigeons. What I'm trying to say that stuff like that brings so much life to the setting because if you lived in Kaimere these are the kind of animals that you'll be seeing most of the time whether they'd be vermin or other urban species.
If I seem too excited about small animals it's because today I had a couple of nice interactions with squirrels in the park, which once again reminded me to appreciate the little animals that live around us.
Love to hear it! Yeah while I love me some megafauna the little critters are indeed what you’d more frequently encounter and I think goes a long way to immerse people
Its incredibly cool that a Multituberculate has managed to be so successful, especially in the face of true rats which are well known species destroyers.
Absolutely! Multis really got a poor reputation of being outcompeted but there was much more to that story and I want Kaimere to reflect that
I always did wonder about the smaller creatures of kaimere, like the loon, did it manage to make a foothold in kaimere?
Common loons are indeed present in Kaimere. Mostly in Qajar and Pakardia, but is found in smaller populations throughout the Southern Islands and Arvelith highlands.

This was such a great episode! The insight it gave into Kaimere's microfauna and the multituberculates especially was very much appreciated!
The distinction between "little rogues" and predator vermin was really interesting, and i love that other pests were explored in this episode as well.
Cant wait for passenger pigeons next week!
I wonder if Kaimerans encourage certain animals to hang around to keep varmints away. Like how some farmers put up bat houses for bats to eat crop-eating insects.
Rat Peckers, pterosaurs whose name is pretty self explanatory are often encouraged to hang about
Absolutely! As Aaron said, rat peckers are kept for that reason, as are cats and firebirds. As long as they don't bother chickens foxes are sometimes welcome, but it's too tempting to go for the thing trapped in a coop
Makes sense. For my own worldbuilding project, farmers encourage bats to eat insects but they also employ giant omnivorous bats to eat rodents and pests.

LOOK MA I'M IN KAIMERE
Hog sloth?! This man creativity has no limits XD
When it comes to sloths I cannot be stopped
I love seing that the passenger pigeon is doing it well on kaimere, their history on earth is so tragic. I have to question it: is the great auk alive on kaimere? I enjoy pretty much the idea that kaimere is like a second chance for these animals.
Thanks! Their story is a bit of a tenuous one (very few harvested ancestors so very limited genetic diversity, much like their Earth counterparts) but they are thriving at the moment. As for great auks, I believe they are on the roster for the polar seas!
Farmer: exists
Hog Sloth: *visible anger*

Wonderful episod, Great to see Kaimere has its rat problem too😅. Your ground sloths continue to amaze me. I am really a huge fan of them.
Thank you! Yeah rats are a big problem and the reason why cats and firebirds are such popular pets. I love me some sloths! Like their bearlike niche I've given them in the project.
Spectacular episode like always my friend. Well, Kaimeran do have a very tough life it seems... Then again, there is always a price to pay...
Thank you.
Thank you!! It is tough indeed.
Always nice to get more micro fauna
Imagine hog sloth living in Florida. Residents would have to not only defend their homes from black bears and racoons attacking trash cans, coyotes walking into the backyard, various rodents trying to penetrate walls, alligators walking into the swimming pools but also this big, fluffy mass with claws that invades from underground.

Maybe a man eaters of Kaimere would be an interesting topic. Since you’ve broadened to concepts like vermin and domesticated animals
It’s something I might actually have a sponsor for!
I love the idea of two similar species from different lineages being locked in a seemingly neverending struggle for supremacy. Usually in situations like this one species simply outcompetes the other with the loser in this scenario going extinct if it cannot adapt to an open niche or different context. In the case of the pouch rat vs the black rat however, the trade networks of the various port cities mean that any extirpation of one species is short lived and no victory lasts forever. This could allow for the two species to develope dedicated behaviors and, with enough time, morphological changes to populations that are geared specifically to combat their rival. The potential within that scenario to spawn interesting adaptations and behaviors is something I find incredibly interesting and inspiring.
Have you heard the teaser of prehistoric planet season 2 is out
I did indeed! Very excited!
Are locusts a problem in Kaimere? If so, how have they changed from our world's counterparts?
They certainly will be, but I haven’t finalized them yet. Will be doing some over the summer!
Thanks for an amazing video! You always make my day with these❤
Thanks for the kind words and glad you enjoyed!
Once again, amazingly made! Despite all these species being new additions to the Kaimerean roster, you’re still able to make them fit in just as well as everything else! I love the continuity you’ve been able to establish with this - it feels so real!
If you don’t mind me asking, are there any extant (or extinct) Kaimerean Glyptosaurines?
Thanks so much! Microfauna really do tie it all together. Gotta fill out some lizards and birds!
I’m not sure if that clade has any representatives in the known world. Sorry!
Glyptosaurines nodosaurs
I gotta hand it to you for these microfauna, well done! I especially like the Hog Sloth and the expansion on rodents, pigeons and multituberculates, even the inclusion of oviraptorosaur. It is very unfortunate that we on Earth persecute many animals that go after vermin and when we try to tackle the problem ourselves, things go wrong.
I guess the only for me left to say is...
RATS!!!
Thanks!! They were long overdue, especially given their importance, and it was a lot of fun to put together!
I'm actually starting my worldbuilding on the microbial world and the diseases some cause. It's crazy, you know?
Neat, I find it kinda funny that rats have one of the most polarizing reputations of all known animals in the world. Art is neat too.
Thanks! Yeah folks do seem to love em or hate em with little between. Studying for this one definitely gave me a middle ground perspective: fascinating perseverant and cute critters, but they can be extremely damaging to both crops and local ecosystems.
Keenan, thank you for you’re hard work, we all appreciate it. You’re an amazing, wonderful, incredible, and awesome person. ☺️😊😄😃🤩😍 ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks so much!!
Would have come sooner but was watching the new prehistoric planet trailer so I get to watch 2 cool videos at the start of my day
I like the fact that you put a explanation at the end of the video explaning what is and what isn't a Vermin/Nuisible, who is can be consideed as part of this category or cannot !
Because there a lot of terms such this ones who are used abusively by many people yet to animals that aren't part of the groups in which people often said they belong.
I can give a here also pretty short and comprehensive definitions of some terms about animals often used anyhow :
1 - "Vermin/Nuisible" : A vermin/nuisible is any species of animals (neve plants species) that can made or completely causes medium to great damages to cultural lands, croops or any kind of humans structures, or humans properties.
The conditions to include a species as a Vermin don't most of the time include the dangers and attacks towards domestic animals and livestocks, and don't include anykind of damages made to the natural ecosystems.
2 - "Introduced species" : An introduced species is any species of animals and plants who are introduced in a ecosystem from which they aren't natives.
3 - "Invasives species" : An invasive species is any species of animals or plants who are introduced to a ecosystem in which they aren't natives AND on which they made medium to great damages, negatives impacts, to the native wildlifes, fauna and plants.
The conditions to include a species as an Invasive species don't include species that were introduced but have neutral or positive impacts in the ecosystems in which they were introduced, or the ones that arrived by themselves naturally in a new ecosystem in which they weren't previousely present.
I'd love a video exploring the first children
The Verminator’s got his work cut out for him. He can take a hog sloth.
Anyway, great new lore here! Love the giant Oviraptorisaur! Any relation to Oviraptor or Citipati? Are either its ancestor?
Haha true, and thanks! I’m generally reluctant to go public with ancestors beyond the Miocene, but it’s more basal than the two you mentioned.
@@TalesofKaimere Got it. So far that’s two Oviraptorisaurs for Kaimere, the other being whatever the giant Kaishel species is called. Hope that we get to explore them more in the future! They’re neat
From Fluffly Mammals, Noisy Birds, and all kind of Crawling Critters!! Trully Kaimere had boiling life in every corner!! What Will Next!? Parasites, Nameless Things and others Underground Odds?!
The Common Monkey segment brings to mind Victarion Greyjoy's POV from A Dance with Dragons where Victarion got annoyed with the presence of monkeys hitching rides and infesting the ships of his fleet when they made a stop-over on one island; he should be thankful though that it wasn't Common Monkeys that hitched a ride ships haha.

Such little guys! Very good ones at that! I just wanna hold them and keep them in a place where they're happy, tbh
Are there axolotls in Kaimiere? because its regeneration and adaptability properties would be a quality highly desired by magic and the First Children
They are not, but other animals have regeneration that the First Children sure did like to employ!
Kaimere already has tons of abominations and against nature running around
talking about the vermin of the world
Gotta love the lil' rat dudes!
Heck yeah!
Oh so that's why the pigeons are protected!
Yes indeed! Was for very practical reasons, but as sometimes happens, laws and regulations for good purposes have unintended consequences.
Now this is some GOOD RAT

@@TalesofKaimere They truly are! You mentioned at the end of the video that you'll be doing a "project with rodents", right? Will this be Kaimere related or a separate project altogether?

While some Pleistocene ancestors/relatives may have been collected, they are not present in modern Kaimere
Have there been any cryptically in kaimere like the kaimere an hypothetical species like cryptic of loving members of clades that went extinct on kaimwrw
The Qajarith Marmot is a subspecies of the real-life Groundhog (Marmota monax) who live in North America, and who is a true Marmot since it's a member of the genus Marmota, which is the genus of all living true Marmots.
Marmots however also all true squirrels since they are a true kind of squirrels, a type of ground squirrels, the heaviest one of all.
In final, this species is another member of he cast of Last natural Harvest event that managed to established on Kaimere (hence why this species is only found in Qajar).

Wondering if there were enough hog sloths brought to earth how do you think they would fair in say modern day America’s and do you think they would have to worry about predators like wolves and mountain lions in the habitats they would overlap?

Have prairie dogs ever made it there?
surprised you didn't include boar and feral hogs in this video, given all the damage they do here on earth.
I did originally have a segment on them, but a lot of what I said there was covered by the sloth section, and they again aren't really rogues since they like bears, lion, and cockatrices are quite dangerous in the right context.
What’s the smallest species of vermin in Kaimere?
Any number of insects and other arthropods, I suppose
10:30 is that really to scale!? Is that raven really as big as a chicken!?
Yup! It's the maximum size. Most are closer to the size of common ravens of Earth, so a little over 2 feet long and a wingspan of nearly 5 feet.
What’s the largest species of vermin in Kaimere?
Depends on your definition. Considering titans can raid gardens, I’d argue they qualify.
While I feel this episode could have been far more out there in vermin choice, I am satisfied with what we have and the new U'ruek, which was irrelevant until now.
have there ever been magically enhanced giant versions of the small rats?
Yeah I decided to really get into rats rather than be too macro, but it did mean I didn’t have time for my original lizard and invertebrate segments.
U’ruek haven’t gotten their due in the videos, but have been in a couple published stories! Their importance to the Pakardiant definitely deserves an episode of their own.
Probably has happened now and then

Question about the U'Ruek at 11:27
1 - You redesigned the U'Ruek or the "Great Cook" illustration of this species is just an additionnal illustration showing how look a specimen when he's at his oldest age ?
2 - If this new U-Ruek design is indeed the new current/standard design for this species, why did you redesign it ? Was there a problem with the first U'Ruek design ?
3 - the First/Old U'Ruek design can be repurposed for a new species if there any problems ?
4 - Unrellated to the U'Ruek, but would you love to made and have a "Oviratorosaurs of Kaimere" episode ?
1. It's the updated look for the species. I'm not entirely sold on the look, and it might get another change, but the old one is definitely out.
2. I didn't really like the old one. Some anatomical issues largely stemming from having an ancestor that wouldn't work with the current timeline.
3. Eh maybe. Possibly a Kaishelan cousin but I'm still unsure.
4. Would be a good opportunity to study and refine the design.
Can you find Carolina Parakeet in Kaimere???
Not sure! Haven’t settled that niche but it is one a lot of folks ask about.

1. The new project is an RPG. I might do some promotion when it’s done and probably will write some segments for it but it’s mostly going to be a game system.
2. I’ve got basics of my languages and if I don’t have vocabulary to make an animal work I make up a new word to fit the description that sounds similar
What kind of creatures do kaimerians keep as pest control?
Cats and firebirds are popular pets in part because they're so good at catching and dealing with rodents.

There must be numerous others species close or convergently similar of Multituberculates that must look similar or exactly like the Pouch-Rat, and have the same ecological behaviors and niches.
However, this very specific species, if I understand well, was endemic and natives to original island from which the First Children evolved and came.
But since this island end up being destroyed due to a big event, making it unviable, and forcing the First Children to flee, if this species haven't follow them, and brought unvolontary by them, in their journey, they would have become entirely extinct otherwise.
Also, it worth it to note that this species did also like the First Children did when they arived in the Known World, on Pakardia and Qajar, they bullied the local fauna.
Like what, such invaders, such vermin as the images of these latters !
So how are porcupines farting in kaimere?
What is the number 1 most hated creature in kaimere?
Oh that's tough. Probably the leopard or lion purely for being the most successful maneaters, but the common cockatrice is on the list for similar reasons.
Did any mongooses make it to kaimere
Dealing vermin sucks I had to deal with the squirrels in my parents house. Luckily, my cat killed one.
Have any Kaimeran rats or mice been domesticated as pets like they have on Earth?
