I don’t think it was a compliment. It would be interesting to know how that artist was contracted.
If I was Charles, I would be going, "What the hell", but maybe he likes it. I am sure he saw a preview, I wonder what his sons and other family members think. Too much red for me, but maybe it does symbolize the blood of the global colonies, and lower classes, and centuries of war, not to mention bloodshed within the royals.
It's a great portrait artistically.
The problem is nobody wants to say what they know the portrait is symbolizing or what it portends.
It's scary looking. Blood bath. The face is wonderfully done. If only the background wasn't red, it would be a nice portrait. Was there a sale on red oil paint?

The king should have the artist redo the background.
The king is known worldwide for his love of nature, the background could reflect that.
Instead, he looks like he is standing in fire.
His face looks rough as well.
Did the king know it was going to look like this, or was he just being polite?
Let the king have the dignity of a decent portrait.
I like the King more now because of this portrait. He cannot possibly like it but he probably must pretend that he does and I feel sorry for him. How humiliating.

This potrat is in the realm of modern art. Not the stuffy old portrait style that has been done ad nauseam for the past centuries. It is bold, fresh and the artist has captured his likeness beautifully. I personally would have defined his garment a bit more to soften the look of the painting unifying the floating head/hands appearance. In all, this is a beautifully executed portrait.

Notice that even chuck jumped back when he first saw the red hell portrait. it was a reflex reaction to seeing it. but as far as it goes, chuck deserves the ridicule..he earned it.

He’s breaking away from tradition. I like it. It’s only satanic to religious people. To an atheist if made me think he was breaking away from traditional boring paintings and how he possibly felt about dying of cancer. I like it. Maybe also depicts that he wants people look at him for who he is (face hands) not my title. His uniform fades into the background but face is clear. It tells a story. The butterfly helps.

It is very artistic and a show of might. Charles is at a unique turn in history. He has strength withing weakened flesh. War all over known & unknown. Space in turbulence as we don't know the maybes. Red is a degree of heat too. He is navigating high seas.like the Black prince sort of seas.
