If it'd been a deep navy or even green the technique used by the artist would have looked interesting. This evokes violence rather than "royalty" and looks uncanny.

The first thing that comes to mind is Princess Diana’s death. That his reign will always be overshadowed by his infidelity to her and the people’s loss of her. He appears older in the portrait than in real life. Note the butterfly. The Kings hand on his sword. Blood and passion red. Not subtle.

When I was in School back in the 90's there were those "extra/super deluxe" colour crayon sets that had additional colours compared to the standard set. It was the thing the rich kids had and the rest of the kids used to beg their parents, cry or throw tantrums for.
The colour of this portrait reminded me of the colour of one of those extra crayons, specifically the "flourescent rose/pink," one that came with the set.

Wow the artist blended his torso in the background, testament of the of evolved nature of the crown. With the monarchy becoming more family uniting and ceremonial and not harshly lording over subjects, but instead blending inside it becoming one with it. Yet still visible as its head. As its face. Family, the face, the head of society. With his head quite shouting to the eye yet the body not standing out. The texture of the colour revealing age, imperfection, the troubles of life. The texture of the body being one with the background. A testament to embodying life challenges and imperfection into ones body and incorporating them to work for you, not against you. One cannot fully express the philosophy in the art. As jordan peterson said, the artist reaches there before the philosopher.
