King Charles’ Artist Admits Not Everyone Will Like the New Portrait

  • The King has unveiled the first completed official portrait of himself since the coronation.
The portrait, by British artist Jonathan Yeo, was commissioned in 2020 to celebrate the then Prince of Wales’s 50 years as a member of The Drapers’ Company in 2022.
Discussing the controversial bold colours used across the canvas, Yeo conceded that “there will always be people who disagree with you, people that don’t agree with how you’ve done it.”
    Report by Matthew Covell.

I've looked at other works by Mr. Yeo, and his other portraits seem much more balanced.
He has done beautiful portraits of Prince Philip and the former Duchess of Cornwall, Her Majesty Queen Camilla.
He also used this same style for other figures he has painted, including his own father, but those portraits use different tones and have better definition and contrast.
I think the red in this portrait is totally overwhelming and detracts from the subject.
It makes a statement, but generally not a positive one.
And although the red has a slightly pink tone to it, it still illicits too much of a connection to imagery of fire and blood. Those are not kind symbols to be associated with a King, especially King Charles.
It has prompted unjustified vile remarks against the King.
Surely the artist wasn't oblivious to how this would be received, which really makes you question his intent, no matter how he tries to justify it.

You paint the King properly or step aside and let a truly artistic artist take the role. He needs a Regal Royal Portrait. You can always paint how you do with your other work at a nother time. If your intentions weren't meant for the work you were tasked to do, then you shouldn't be painting at all.

Years ago my Mother in law threw an annual Halloween party. They were fun. Every year she would have a different special event or game. One year she hired an "aura reader" He took like a Polaroid pic of each of us and on most you could see a faint delicate color around the person. Like a rainbow or pale blue etc. Mine had this massive red cloud around me. It looked like a fat bright blood red feather boa around me. My heart and stomach just dropped and I froze when I saw it. I didn't like or enjoy that at all. It really distressed me a lot.

Sounds like the artist got in his own head. Different to be different. There are ways to have made it modern versus traditional portraits without trying so blatantly hard to be different. Then again, it does speak to the King for the fact that he has been desperate to show how he is different. Truth of the matter, its getting lots of views and comments which is a plus. However, once that settles and its just another portrait in 100 years its just going to be an eyesore.

Jonathan Yeo has used quite a bit of Artistic licence in his interpretation of King Charles III....as I feel he has knocked at least a decade off his age. However...As a painter myself, I am a fan of the dominant cerise/fuchsia... In my opinion, the finished work conveys a modern dignity and quiet presence of a 21st Century King.
