The thing is that most people don't really care too much about the most cutting edge stuff and don't obsess over fastest and most capable hardware. Some Chinese phones have Dimensity 9300 chip, it's faster than anything out there, some have 1 inch camera sensors, some have 16GB RAM. They sell for roughtly the same price as Samsung or Apple, but it doesn't matter to a lot of consumer, not even to top 5%, top 1% and likely top 0.1%. Because Samsung or Apple top tier phone is just good enough and even if there are significant edge to hardware, most people hate switching brands and don't see a reason for that. I’m 100% sure that the people complaining about the iPhones incremental yearly changes would be first on line criticizing apple should they release a complete new and different iPhone every year “they want us to buy a new phone every year “. No one is forcing you to buy a phone every year. It simple, if you don’t like the upgrades or lack of them, simply don’t buy an iPhone or get a different brand if you must update.
I passed on the iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, I think I will see what the iPhone 17 has to offer. My iPhone 11 Pro Max is still alive and the battery is at 84%. Why upgrade?
I’m really not a fan of an audio isolation microphone sound effects. It sounds very harsh and hollow. Like someone is taking a phone call on Bluetooth earbuds.
I wonder if he cranked up the volume too high. If I was going to use that, I probably would have brought it to maybe 70%. But not 100. If any higher, it would be 90%. Or 80%. Not really sure.
The jump from iPhone 3 series to 4 felt like a massive change, same with the iPhone 5 to iPhone 6 plus and then the X. Now the updates are more incremental, and that's ok.
This phone is just made for people who are on the upgrade cycle this is not a phone people look forward to this is a phone you just happen to get on an upgrade plan or if your phone broke

I’m enjoying the camera control. It makes taking a photo feel a bit more intentional - adjusting the settings with a physical control makes you take a bit more time to think about the composition, exposure etc like a real camera. I’m still using the on screen buttons if I just want to snap a pic really quickly but using the camera button if I want to take a “proper” photo.
I'm keeping my base iPhone 13 for another year...next year sounds like the upgrade worth getting- 12GB RAM, ProMotion 120hz coming to all the 17 models, new Apple designed modem, 1 year for AI to mature etc
I can't help but make the comparison that the Pixel 9 which was released in August 2024 already has both 120 Hz and 12 GB RAM for the entry level 128 GB storage variant. And going back a year, the Pixel 8 which was released in late 2023 also had 120 Hz, and offers 8GB RAM for the entry level 128GB variant. I realize that iPhones are more efficient when it comes to utilizing RAM versus Android. And for the most part, the majority of people who buy the entry level iPhones instead of the Pro or Pro Max models don't care about the higher refresh rates. But when more and more android phones are offering more for less money, Apple finally has to face the reality and catch up on certain specs and features. I also have the iPhone 13, I just bought it last year when I switched carriers. I didn't need to upgrade to a higher end Pro or Pro Max model. I was all Android up until mid 2020 until I bought an iPhone 11, which was a great phone as well. The reality is that since switching to iPhones 4 years ago, their reliability is much better than any LG or Samsung phone I have ever owned. Truth is I am not sure I want to go back to Android and take a chance with reliability or longevity. So I will continue to keep an eye on future iPhone releases as well as Samsung and Pixel.
I understand “more powerful” as an attractive feature for macbooks or ipad pros that people use for work, but we’ve really reached the point of diminishing returns for “more powerful chip” on a smartphone. I wish new releases would focus much more on improving battery efficiency.
Doesn't that kind of depend upon your usage? If you are watching video the more powerful chip is an afterthought. If you are playing high end games then it is essential. I am not suggesting your opinion is irrelevant, it it just more relevant to you than a different user.
@@MrEiniweini I guess I’m out of touch with the mobile gaming scene. It feels strange to me to use your phone to do high end gaming instead of a PC. High end graphics on a tiny screen seems a waste? I only play high end games on PC and casual games on the phone but I guess others are different.
@@MrEiniweini Phone chips have been powerful enough to run any mobile game for almost decade. At this point games are capping framerate to save some battery. More powerful chip means almost nothing nowadays.
I analyzed the location of this new button and actually, it makes sense. Picture this: any dedicated camera (Canon, Nikon, etc.) sold is designed to be held with your two hands and the push button is always on the top right side. I don’t think Apple designed that button to take photos with one hand only. Take your two hands and you will realize that it makes sense. Even without this button, it is very difficult to take a photo other than a selfie with one hand.
It’s like modern video gaming. We have simply reached a point in technology to where nothing impresses us anymore and there’s only so much you can do. We just got there much faster with phones.
I was really impressed with the quality of the filming all around there. It looked and sounded great. I don't think I will regret upgrading my iPhone 8 Plus to the 16 Pro Max.
I have been a yearly upgrader since 2008, this is the first time I skipped the new Iphone, the 16 Pro Max and my current 15 PM are really similar, even though I like Iphone photography the camera control is pointless to me because everything it does we can already do it on screen, the better battery, new chip, 48MP ultra wide sounds fun but won’t change the way we use our current phone
I’ve been using the 16 PM over the weekend and I agree the placement of the Camera Control needs work. It’s awkwardly placed. I did get used to half press to get into the lens control.
I think that's smart. Frankly if it wasn't for lightning I'd be willing to go all the way back to the iPhone 13 Pro Max. That generation seem to have the best battery life and efficiency. But USBC is obviously a pretty big turning point
That's smart! Carrier stores are already selling it for $100 less that the original price! Plus, you can literally take a picture with the volume button. 💀

You are supposed to use both hands to hold the phone in landscape position when using it as a camera. The button is then exactly where the shutter button would be on a regular camera. It is exactly where I would expect it to be.
Not really, it's closer to the middle of the phone, which makes it awkward in both positions. They should've placed it lower so that it would feel great in landscape and just not work in portrait.
@@VKTR_Tech Absolutely this. And if it were more comfortable to us in landscape then it would push people to use landscape video. I totally agree with you about the camera control button. It’s OK for opening the Camera app and then immediately using it as a shutter button, but trying to actually use the controls with a swipe always makes me feel like I’m about to drop the phone, especially considering I have a 16 Pro Max.
Love the video! I kind of see things like you describe them. A real shame, that there is a tremendous amount of technology in that new phone, and we still are not THAT excited about it.
No matter where they place the button it will be awkward for someone, at the end of the day it’s still a phone. The thing about the placement of the button people seem to miss is that it makes the menu easier in landscape, but like Luke said, you can access those features from the screen where it’s very very easy to access when taking portrait mode photos. If you don’t think about the button being used in portrait mode, it makes better sense.
Going from a 12pm to the 16pm and for the past weekend, I’ve enjoyed the phone. I have bigger hands so I wanted the best battery and screen size. Almost got the 16 plus but chose to just get the Max and go shoot some photos with the 7 plus ways to open the camera . 🤙🏾
Is the microphone feature a software feature that can be used on the 15 promax? That seems to be the only feature I like. I don’t think i’ll like the button nor filming in 4k120. I need to upgrade my phone but i don’t care for any of the new features. I was hoping for an upgraded telephoto which is why i didn’t upgrade a few months ago. I believe if the telephoto gets updated in the 17, i’ll be trading whatever I get now for that. Would it be better to upgrade to a 15 pro max then trade that in for the 17 when it comes out?
Sounds like left and right channels receive the same mono signal from the voice while all the background sounds are filtered out. Also there is a boost at 1k-3k region and that's what gives it that nauseous sound. The worst one seems to be "studio". "Cinematic" has too much upper bass, in the 100-300 hz while also sounding like mono signal sent to both L+R. The "in-frame" seems better in terms of spatial audio as it dives the impression of an actual stereo mix, again background sounds being filtered out, but it has a thin sound and for that reason it has no presence. A boost of around 300 hz area would be beneficial as well as a slight treble boost. Overall I would go with "in-frame" out of the 3 options.
I’d like to see a comparison of microphone quality by distance. I saw a video where a different creator used voice memos and an iPhone as a handheld microphone for a traditional camera. The audio quality seemed much better in that video.
Came from iPhone 11 so really like ALL the incremental upgrades Apple did. Bought an iPhone 16 Pro for everything that you mentionned. Next upgrade for me will be probably with the iPhone 20, unless they wow me with something but as you say, if they keep doing incremental upgrades 20 it will be.
Went from 13pro to 16pro. Overall, great experience jumping that distance, but I have to agree: The camera control button placement is REALLY awkward to use. Holding it vertically, I think if they simply raised the positions of both the lock button and camera control, in addition to placing them just a little closer together towards the top, it would feel MUCH MORE NATURAL to use.
I like to turn the camera to the right instead of the left and use the camera button with my left thumb instead of my right index finger. Works better for me. Maybe I'm all thumbs. I've still yet to find anybody give me a reason why it needs a big redesign. What's wrong with the current design? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Nobody these days is buying a new phone every year. Smartphones are reaching maturity, there's really not a whole lot that can be further improved in a meaningful way in my opinion. Doesn't make the new phones bad. Honestly I think we take how polished phones (and other technology I guess) for granted. That said, I'm keeping my 15 Pro for at least 2-3 years lol
Recently ordered an excellent condition 15 Pro Max 1TB for under a grand to replace my 11 Pro 64gb that I also bought used 3 years ago. I’m now good for over 3+ years. The new camera button on the 16 didn’t impressed me so it made my choice for the 15 even more clear for my needs and uses
Hey you're in Sydney!!... Also you're right about the incremental updates. Same screen specs (0.1" bigger), and the biggest selling point they're marketing it on, Apple Intelligence, isn't going to be ready for a while, even next year. That's crazy to me.
You’re right about the new camera control button being awkward when holding the phone normally and using your thumb. It may feel more natural to do like you would with a point-and-shoot camera… hold it in a landscape orientation and use your right index finger on the button.
No one mentioning the new photo slider that brings shadows in and out. It makes pics look WAY better. I’m sure that could go on the older phones, but right now it’s only on the 16s. Apple loves to brighten shadows and a simple finger gesture brings them all back and adds a much better look
I totally agree and I been not upgraded in the past. My wife and I had iphone 8's and we upgraded when the 14's came out. We will use the 14's until they either loose battery life or we break one :) I also have an X in a box to use if I loose one or need to replace one quickly.

I think I prefer the cinematic audio mix. It feels weird to not hear the ambiance while walking.
And this one cuts out TOO much sound. Cinematic is better quality
Studio removes all background audio so you can edit it in yourself.
Great update from my 12 pro, but you’re right, absolutely no reason to upgrade from the 15 pro, Apple is definitely relying on the cumulative upgrades
For me a larger battery and bigger display are more than enough of an upgrade
As an Android user, to this day I have a lot to say about the headphone jack removal...
I passed on the iPhone 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, I think I will see what the iPhone 17 has to offer. My iPhone 11 Pro Max is still alive and the battery is at 84%. Why upgrade?

The jump from iPhone 3 series to 4 felt like a massive change, same with the iPhone 5 to iPhone 6 plus and then the X. Now the updates are more incremental, and that's ok.
I feel the *exact* same way about the Camera Control on my iPhone 16 Pro. It seems oddly positioned and redundant at best.
A lot of extra features apple brings like background blur whern’t even working on my new device lmfao

Ooh you’re showing off Sydney and the iPhone simultaneously … my two favourite things this month
Nice selections haha
Every year reviewers say “If they do anything I hope they improve battery life.” And finally, they improve the battery and nobody cares.
Overall, great experience jumping that distance, but I have to agree:
The camera control button placement is REALLY awkward to use. Holding it vertically, I think if they simply raised the positions of both the lock button and camera control, in addition to placing them just a little closer together towards the top, it would feel MUCH MORE NATURAL to use.
You can swip on the screen with the camera control options
An for the awkward position, turn the phone around than its perfect for the thumb
Making this a 'shot on iPhone' video with mode captions is a great call - a review and a demo at the same time 👌
They have already ditched the lighting port, the sim card and the headphone jack. What is left to eliminate?
The screen, power, volume buttons, speakers, mics, USB-C port, and cameras.
Nobody these days is buying a new phone every year. Smartphones are reaching maturity, there's really not a whole lot that can be further improved in a meaningful way in my opinion.
Spot on criticisms. Hopefully Apple makes some major changes.
Why does the audio sound like a thin sounding phone call?
The money they blew on the VR headset and AI could have been redirected to making the iPhone better.
I totally agree and I been not upgraded in the past. My wife and I had iphone 8's and we upgraded when the 14's came out. We will use the 14's until they either loose battery life or we break one :) I also have an X in a box to use if I loose one or need to replace one quickly.
