RV CALIFORNIA | SAN FRANCISCO & SANTA CRUZ (EP 58 OF OUR RV LIFE)

  • This week on KYD we visit Santa Cruz, hike Big Basin Redwoods and tour San Francisco. Against our better judgment, we broke our own rule of ALWAYS driving our car into the city. It's amazing how people suggest spending hundreds of dollars on public transportation to avoid $35 parking in the city!

    I was born in SF and grew up just north in Petaluma (not far from San Rafael). Whenever I see folks wearing a SF or Monterey windbreaker or hoodie, I ask, "You were there in the Summer, weren't you?" and the answer is always, "Yes". The saying goes, "The coldest winter I ever spent was Summer in San Francisco". Love your videos and tips. We just got back from being near Santa Barbara and visited The Old Santa Barbara Mission based on your recommendations. It did not disappoint! :)

    I've watched all your videos. It feels very much like I'm reliving my childhood summers. My dad was a high school football coach and we spent our Summer's going to coaches conventions across America. We did the same routes as y'all back in the 70s. Camping- is that old school? RVing new hip word- was so great across our beautiful country. You meet the best people, and instant friends at the pool or park at a campsite. True story- we had a flat tire on our camper ON THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE. Yep. Signs everywhere saying stay in your vehicle. Luckily the cameras found us and tow trucks ( yes 2) rescued us and changed our tire, wouldn't let dad do it.. Not before we stopped and paid the toll. 😄. Just a tip for you. Try to stop at Presidential Libraries. They are very cool, even to us kids. I think we didn't miss a one. Your kids will always remember these trips. Whenever a place comes up on TV- USA, Canada, or Mexico- my kids say " We know Mom, you've been there!" 😂 Safe travels!

    I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how adventurous you are and I LOVE how you push the rules to be able to see those amazing views and historical places. I'm the same way, I can hear my husband screaming at me (in a nice way of course) because those aren't the "rules". I LOVE IT!!
    I also love how kind and respectful you are to the disabled (physically challenged and handicap, whatever is politically correct). Living and being married to a wonderful man with MS who's disabled and has been challenged for 35 years in public places on family vacations, it's important to know the places that are welcoming and ready to make his and others visit less challenging and safe. Thank you for sharing that important information in your videos.
    Ps, watching your videos encouraged me to to dig out and dust off the drone I bought my husband. I took it to my cousin and he is teaching me how to use it. I also called my granddaughter to dust hers off and I'm going to take her to a field in two days to fly our drones together. Your family inspires people in many ways, not just to get out and rv. I really wish we didn't sell our rv when I was sick. Guess it was for the best.

    • @KeepYourDaydream
      @KeepYourDaydream  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks so much. We've been doing a bit better with "rules" now that there are so many eyes on us :) You're quite welcome regarding pointing out areas to visit with handicap access. The benefit of building a community is we know who is watching... so we're able to remember those people when we're recording. It's no longer just a camera we're talking to. Good luck with the drone. If it doesn't have GPS... mind the wind.

    • @acof1867
      @acof1867 6 лет назад

      Keep Your Daydream: Thank you for the drone tip. After flying mine, you make me extremely nervous when you fly over water and non easy accessible to retrieve areas. But, I forgot about the GPS. Mine does not have it, its small, but as soon as I master this one, I have my eye on a couple of others. Maybe Lily (my 10 yr old granddaughter) and I will start our own drone RUclips channel after we become pros 🤣🤣😂😂 They are a ton of fun! Plus, they get you outside enjoying life. ❤️

    Being a retired State Ranger I enjoyed that you and your family liked Big Basin Redwood State Park. When you hike, it would be a good idea to always carry the 10 Essentials. When hiking nature can allure you to stay longer...

    My wife and i have watched a ton of your videos in the last few weeks. We sold our home in Detroit to move back to Phoenix...... then things changed... My wife and I chatted about buying a TT and a truck and go experience the country for 6 months or however long it takes.. now here we are watching and following people doing this and getting ready to but a Grand Design TT with bunkhouse and looking for diesel ram 2500. We enjoy your videos.

      Keep Your Daydream we started planning for 6 months but we want to keep it going as long as possible after 6 months. The homeschooling options and jobs is what we are working on now. To be able to make money on the road is a dream of mine and my wife. What's your top 5 favorite camping spots? Whether it be campground,boonedock,etc?

    You probably have the best travel vlog on youtube. I really look forward to each new video. While I don't have an RV and can't afford one, you inspire me to travel more within my own country. I've been to San Francisco twice in my life, and my fondest memories are the visits we paid to the Ghiradelli Chocolate Factory.

    I was an insurance photographer for 3 years in San Francisco, without GPS you could spend days trying to find your way out! If you go back to San Francisco, you need to go look at Fort point, it is under the Golden gate and you also must go to the Cliff House, it is on the coast, on the west side of the city, Spectacular views! And happy 18th! may you have each other for many many more! Love your whole family!

    Fun & Trendy? I was fun and trendy when I was 17.
    It’s been downhill ever since.
    We flew into SF from over the Pacific Ocean in Asia a few years ago.
    The pilot came up to the Golden Gate Bridge, turned to starboard, descended, and those of us on the port side got a spectacular view of the Bridge, the Bay, and the city.
    Your hike, and the view of the Bridge was even better.
    Way To Go

    Keep Your Daydream, first of all, what's going on boys in the back? Either Carson or Caleb, I can't tell which one, the one with the blanket on. Wow, that is a skinny high way. I hate those kind of road with drop offs on the side. Oh my gosh!!! Haha! The boys reaction to the fast wifi, lol! My family and I went on a cruise in February of 2016 and our hotel we stayed at had high speed free wifi and it took my iPad an hour to connect to because it had so many people on it. Isn't that crazy? Happy Anniversary you two! Happy 18 years you two love birds! Here's to 18 more! My parents have been married for 19 years, 20 years May of next year! Oh my gosh!!! That dog sitting on the bed trying to sleep! Haha lol! Carson does his hair just like mine. That's crazy! Another great video!

    You visited my city!!! Not that I live there now but I spent 30 years of my life there and do consider myself an ambassador of this town. Looks like you guys visited the most iconic spots. I wish that you had actually walked the bridge. It's magnificent and there is something amazing about traveling from one side to the other and looking down to see the boats travelling underneath. But, it does take a chunk of time to do that! Hopefully you guys were able to visit these really important spots: Ocean Beach/Cliff House/Sutro Baths, Golden Gate Park, Twin Peaks (amazing view of the city), and my sentimental 2nd favorite (GGB is my favorite!), Mt. Davidson with the cross at the top. From that location you can see the whole city and the incredible cross with its history too...it's not a beautiful cross but awesome nonetheless.
    I bet you were pretty stunned by the traffic...it has become a monstrous place to drive, and the people are very aggressive. We've had more than one incident of a person leaping out of their car to actually try to get in a fight with my husband! Amazing! Also, parking is a miserable concept in SF. I hope you guys did ok!! :)
    I saw in one of your videos that you were mere miles from me when you pit-stopped in Grants Pass. I wish I'd known you were in the area...I would have recommended that you visit Kaleidoscope Pizza and made sure not to miss hiking the Lower Table Rock, and making sure to walk to the far side for a jaw-dropping view of the whole valley. I look forward to seeing the video of your trip through the area...it's quite beautiful here and yes, the Rogue River is sensational!

      Hey there Janet. It's been a while since we've heard from you. I didn't know you were in Grants Pass. We loved it there. Toured the Dutch Bro's HQ and stayed at the Riverpark RV Park. It was a great time. We ended up staying a couple extra days to get some work done. We loved OR. Our fav state thus far. Keep in touch!

      Hey there! TY for the reply! :) Yeah, Steve and I live just north of Medford. I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay. There is so much beauty in this state, and we haven't even seen that much of it, to be honest. Well, we've toured via our motorcycle but not nearly as much hiking or biking as we plan in the future. I haven't done the Dutch Bro's tour myself, but we'd like to! And we've seen the Riverpark RV Park too, nice to know you enjoyed the area at least for a couple of days. Hopefully sometime you'll be back in the area! Or who knows what will happen down the road!! We may have to track you guys down when we go on the road if we are lucky enough to cross paths! :) Take care and enjoy yourselves! :)

    Lived in SF and Santa Cruz. After my mom had her stroke, I would take her to Big Basin. It is so accessible.
    And yes, you're crazy. I'm nervous driving Hwy 9 in my Prius! More power to you.
    And the Painted Ladies are indeed gorgeous. The house I lived in was in the Haight and a 1906 survivor, so it too had Victorian Charm, but not as fancy as those houses.

    Going back through your seasons over the long weekend has been a lot of fun. This episode is bittersweet because what was once an amazing city has been turned into a cesspool for the most part. I used to be down in SF at least once a month for client visits. I now take clients outside of the city to meet and do lunches and dinners because of what the city has become.
    That Said, I really enjoy seeing the city before all of this has come to pass. Great trip guys!

    Thank you for a wonderful trip thru my childhood! I grew up in Boulder Creek and had friends that I road horses with in Big Basin. Back then there wasn't much traffic! One thing that I remember about SF is that when I was about 6 years old I was excited because we were going to see the Golden Gate Brigde for the first time and when we got there I was really upset- it was ORANGE- not GOLD! How rude! HA My husbands aunt lived in one of the houses you showed across from the park. Glad you guys had a good time- there is tooooo much to see in SF.

    BRAVO, KYD!! Another excellent video! Congratulations on 18 years, too!! FYI: The pastel-colored houses on Steiner Street across from Alamo Square Park are a tourist destination in themselves and they're called The Painted Ladies. And now, for an über--obscure bit of triva: A few blocks north, at 2640 Steiner; the corner of Steiner & Broadway, is the "Mrs. Doubtfire" house!!

    My family and I visit the Bay Area all the time. Once there are more than two people and sometimes even if there are two people it typically makes sense to just drive into the City and pay the parking as the cost and restrictions of public transportation are not worth it. Just be very, very, VERY, careful parking on the streets as the parking authority will ticket you in a second for your infraction. Beware the street sweeper days!

      Thanks for your comment. The video is not as good as I would have liked... we missed a lot and know the the city fairly well. The ferry really messed up our plans... and wasted a lot of time. Had we drove in, we would have arrived by 9am and started in the Wharf. The graffiti wall Tori wanted to see, but that was in a sketchy part of town and the public transportation wasted another 2 hours! Wish I could re-do. Oh well.

    Highly recommend the BackCountry Navigator app. We originally put it on our phone but then moved it to the 8" tablet to be able to see the maps a little better. Worth the money for any amount of hiking. No internet required when you're out in the wilderness, you just have to download your area before you head out (for you guys you may as well just download all of North America and be done with it!). The maps have ALL the trails. You can track your progress, leave gps way points, and it will even tell you your average and max speed (especially fun for mountain biking). Really great for peace of mind. We live in Colorado and there are just tons of game trails and unofficial trails that can get you lost and some in the family don't have the greatest sense of direction. We even used it for driving the roads in Yellowstone because we had ZERO cell service or wifi while we were there. Love your videos, can't wait to see places in the Pacific Northwest where I grew up! play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.crittermap.backcountrynavigator.license&hl=en
    There is a free trial version too: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.crittermap.backcountrynavigator&hl=en

      Wendy Banzhof I can't find this app. Is it iPhone?

    • @wbanzhof
      @wbanzhof 6 лет назад

      I didn't even think about that. We are all android so it must not be available for Apple. Such a bummer it really is a fantastic app. If I were an Apple person it would honestly be worth buying a cheap tablet just to have it on!

      That's a good point. I'll see if I can get it on my kindle.

    We got the same looks from tourists when we did Lombard streer in our truck! 2500 diesel.....no problem. My husband is nuts. He made me get out to take a picture 🤣😂 Just discovered you guys, love watching your Cali stuff, it's all our family vacations.

    I haven’t seen a video in the Redwood National Forest yet. Going down Hwy 101 Ferndale to Crescent City. It’s beautiful driving along the ocean. These are places we go to get away from the heat of 100 or more.

    So sad, Big Basin burned. The visitor center and so many trees are gone now. It will regrow, but it will be awhile. Made me cry to see it. I live on Big Basin Way.

    I missed you! I can't believe you didn't show anything in Santa Cruz - you were in Felton and Boulder Creek which are great as far as redwood forests go, but that is not really Santa Cruz, surfing, ocean beaches, Big Dipper at the Beach Boardwalk, and hoppin' downtown. You'll just have to come back. Oh, loved the video of course and I hope you know I'm just teasing.

      Yeah, that internet at the RV Park was so good... we ended up working a bunch! Stayed there a week and only left once. Shameful I know, but every once in a while we need to pound out some work and catch-up!

      Keep Your Daydream Actually, that was smart. The forest is a good place to rejuvenate and get some peace. If I had known you were there I could have brought in some supplies. I skipped ahead from my binge watching the last few days, trying to catch up. Loving it.

    Omgosh this makes me miss California so much!!! Did you all see Sutro Baths? That's a cool place too! Gotta get to the bridge early for parking for sure. You had such a clear day!
    Best thing about California is you can see desert, and prairie, and forest, and beach and all in one location basically.
    Awesome footage!! Thanks for sharing.
