      Can't wait to see AI get trained during a game to use your friends voices and mess with us. Imagine the first time you start the game the player needs to record a couple of lines, and each time you play those lines can be heard from the darkness. That and proximity chat would make everyone shit in their pants.

    From my experience with GTFO, it's less of a typical horror game, and more of an "Oh shit we're totally screwed" type of game. The fear of the game comes from how brutally it punishes you for mistakes, so when you haven't messed up yet you're terrified of making a mistake, and when you have made one you have the dread of knowing what's coming and how horribly screwed you are for the rest of the mission.

      From what I have experienced with GTFO, it definitely does play like an "Oh shit we're totally screwed" horror game. Unlike in most horror titles where once you've messed up you usually cruise to safety, in GTFO even one small error can result in your demise. This combined with the intensity of the procedurally generated levels means that no two playthroughs will be the same, making the fear all the more real for the player. tentacles Awn7mFktpB4

    Even as someone who plays phasmophobia a lot, when you go in vr. You feel like you are back to knowing nothing. Flatscreen Phasmo is not scary in the slightest for me anymore unless it’s a unexpected startle. But in vr I feel like I’m gonna die because it’s vr. In vr you have to hold the radio and close the closet doors physically and hope the ghost doesn’t see you do it. While in flatscreen you hold B and click a mouse. In vr you have to physically hold the lighter and light the incense while running from a ghost that is the same height as you, while in flatscreen you just click your mouse and press the W key.

I don't expect it's a game I'll even enjoy in single player, but as a multiplayer game I find it most enjoyable). I don't think of myself as someone who enjoys the feeling of being afraid, and in theory the detective aspect of the game is more the reason I enjoy it, but yeah, I can only imagine VR is 10 times scarier than flatscreen

    note: remind that in phasmo, the "responds to people who are alone" is about the spirit box. it means that the ghost will only respond to spirit box questions if the person is alone IN THE ROOM, not in the house.also, as scruffy said, the radio in phasmo is also great because during a hunt, it actively hinders you as it alerts the ghost to your prescence and location, which can, and will, lead to your death.

    Lethal Company. Buy it right now.
    THE scariest multiplayer game and also the funniest. It's in early access and is already great. It released a few weeks ago.
    It's scary because the graphics are so degraded with a pixel filter. The creatures are also horrifying. You barely see the monsters because they always kill you in one shot or multiple attacks while you're running away. Using the in game proximity chat makes the game so much more fun. You do have walkie talkies, but they take up an inventory slot, and you only have four. The battery on all your electronic gadgets is limited and must be recharged manually in the ship.

  • @drysocks4412
    @drysocks4412 9 месяцев назад +13

    One of the unique strengths I find that multiplayer horror games have is the ability to separate players from each other. Normally having others with you creates this sense of safety by having a group, a support system, around to help. Suddenly cutting off one player from another inverts this, making a unique feeling of vulnerability.
    Take Labyrinth for example. While navigating its maps and mazes various 'cave-ins' can occur separating players from one another, forcing them to suddenly travel alone. Combine this with the in-game proximity chat and you have a good recipe for horror.

    Damn I have complete opposite feelings about outlast trials. Its scary the first time you get introduced to each trial but that effect goes away after a while for sure, and basically turns into a game of optimizing your runs. The rig system and perks add more depth for "fighting" back against the invincible mobs. Learning how each monster acts differently, and learning map objectives and layouts to be more effective in runs. The modifiers are also fun and I think theres a lot of replayability. Communication is pretty important for strategizing in the game especially if you want to get a good grade. It's more of a co-op scenario game with the outlast/horror theme. Personally I found this gameplay loop pretty fun compared to most other horror co-op games I've played in the past.

    There was this fun game called "We were here", free too. Not the most scary, but I love it's use of communication. See, you're both trapped in a castle on complete opposite ends, and can't see what the other is doing at all. All you have is a walkie talkie, which seems like it would ruin the scariness, but it kinda doesn't. See, only ONE of you can talk at a time, if both of you try to talk, all you get is silence. So in some of the scarier sections, all you can hear is the other person's terrified ramblings and pleas for help (that was mostly me) while all you can do is listen and try your best to help. And you can't turn them off either so you are forced to listen

      i play laby too and honestly don't even enjoy it for any horror-related stuff, i just think doing mazes with friends and proxy chat is fun, and there's more to getting good at the game than what meets the eye too (stuff like baiting rush monsters, keeping a monster "agro stunned" to help a teammate slip by, hiding around corners to reset dying teammates, taking good lines to reach safety, looping for teammates to do puzzles or get a revive, etc.)

    I’m currently working on a game that’s basically Escape the Backrooms, but better. The plan is that almost every level splits up the players at the start so you have to find each other. There’s proximity chat, but due to this being developed on Roblox (yes I know it has a bad connotation but it’s going really good so far), there’s bubble chat for players who haven’t been verified for proximity chat. The entities consist of a main entity designed solely to disorient and split up the main group, and supporting entities that slowly kill off your crew when you’re separated. It also has survival elements such as hunger and sanity to contrast the horror and make it harder to stay in one place. I think the game will be really fun and also horrifying once it’s done.

    SCP Secret Laboraty is mostly a game to have fun with random people all doing their own thing and usually saying dumb shit (if not spamming "funny" soundboards, the proximity voice chat being great)
    And yet there's still a few time here and there where you get scared for real and man do I both hate and love these moments. You spend 10 minutes having fun (or not) doing stuff peacefully, you think everything all right, then you hear someone talking behind a door so you approach to say hi, open the door and and there's SCP-939 pouncing at your to eat your face as you scream like a baby for the very little time you had to react and now 939 has stolen the last thing you said and he *IS* going to spam you screaming like a baby for the rest of the game and there's nothing you can do about it while you hear other spectator laughing at 939 spamming it and mocking your baby scream.
    SCP Secret Laboratory is the both the funniest (not "fun", funny) and most horrifying game because it has cyber bullying guaranteed

    Now i know most of you wouldn't want to try this; but i think an amazing way to re-live horror games in a completely different way is to roleplay them. Try to actually pretend you're your own character, and if you can; even voice act your character's fears & feelings. Once you get into that role, they feel scary all over again; as if you were on danger. Specially if the games are good, of course. Project Zomboid and Escape the Backrooms sure did work like a charm for me when trying that. And having friends makes it so much more magical. %100 recommend.

    SCP is more spread out panic moments that make your heart beat fast rather than being spooky for being an horror genre game, and thats why i like it more than phasmo, because its so random and unpredicable that one second you can be laughing your ass off on 914 by shooting the scientists and the other you hear larry's muddy footsteps coming from the gate, is extremely enjoyable and its community is absolutely nuts. So i can see why you dont like it very much, but i do recommend you try private servers with your friends, it makes it more intense since less people.

    Ready or Not even though not a horror makes me nervous because whenever you shoot someone and they aren't dead, they will disengage and come at you at a later time. At certain maps, they can pretend to be a helpless civilian or even hide, always making you feel unsafe. If these elements were to be adopted in a horror multiplayer settings, I can imagine it to be very, very scary.

    SCP and Phasmo are two of my most played games and I 100% agree. The potential of Phas is only limited by server issues and poor optimization (not to mention the truly awful item shop, I would pay THEM money to let me design a new UI for that abomination). Phas is so fun though even if you only have 1 other person to play it with. SCP can be scary if you're playing on a private server with friends but even then you need to have a large group of people and the more familiar you get with the mechanics the more it feels like a multiplayer PVP game instead of a horror game. The horror only shows up in the split second instances when the parameters Stellar has laid out are met. Great video man, really hit the nail on the head here.

    I would highly recommend Labyrinthine. My friends and I used to play a lot of phasmaphobia but after a long time we started looking at it too much as a game and its scare factor wore off. Labyrinthine continues to freak my friends and I out fairly consistently. Wandering through mazes, being separated from your friends by either the monsters that hunt you or by shit like vines growing to block your path all while you desperately try to solve a puzzle as you hear some shit approaching you and your friends voices fade away due to the proxy chat is very entertaining. According to what you said here I think it is the kind of multiplayer horror game you would enjoy. Definitely worth a look.

  • @CrimsonPants
    @CrimsonPants 9 месяцев назад +5

    I would love to see you take a peek at the many, MANY games that spawned from Phasmophobia's success. 'Multiplayer Co-op Investigative Horror' became its own sort of sub-genre, with some games just repeating what Phasmophobia did but worse, and others taking the idea to a new locale. Forewarned sits are a particularly special place in my heart because it does everything Phas does but leans a bit more into the gameplay side of things with more mechanics than simply hiding when the monsters are coming to get you. You don't just cower and survive, you have to actively look for an escape whilst the monster closes in, each of them doing something different.
    One monster requires you to sneak around, yeah, but he is blind. He is constantly and loudly stomping around, and there are multiple butt-clenching moments where I have to press myself to a wall and watch as he presses mere inches past me, unable to even vocalize my discomfort for fear he would turn and chew my face off. And the best part is seeing my friends do the exact same thing across from me! It's great!

    Outlast trials does limit the amount of options you have to fight back too much... Except for bottles, bricks, and the OP rigs. I think the point is valid until late game, when using a blind or stun rig can save nearly every run. It flips very quickly from too little defensive options to becoming nearly untouchable in any mode under X Trials. I enjoy Outlast Trials, but it is extremely repetitive and does need some new scares.
