Shout out to those who lived through this time and remember what a force the one and only phone company was...the high cost of phone service and the hoops you had to jump through just to get a line set up in your name. You don't mess with Ma Bell.
The phone cops, the New Year's alcohol tests with Fever and Venus (Johnny's reflexes got faster, the more he drank) and the turkey drop. My top three. Hilarious!!!!!
This was a great episode. They all were. So much so, I bought the DVD set because this will never be in syndication until about 2050. All that good music and so many copyrights it'll take 75 years.
People don't even remember what an oppressive force AT&T was, so they don't get how Johnny's worries were just on the border of reasonable. This cut doesn't show it, but when the people at the station think Johnny and Venus are dead, you really feel them processing it. Even Jennifer can't maintain her composure when she sees Johnny's coffee mug. So when Johnny comes racing in, the emotional whiplash is something you almost never get from TV.
It was truly awful. Up until the last few years of the Ma Bell dynasty you couldn’t even go out and buy your own phone, you had to lease it from the phone company.
Next to the infamous "turkey drop" episode, this one is probably my favorite. Venus was depicted as Andy's best friend, but the chemistry between him and Johnny was pretty amazing, too. And of course, you gotta love Les Nessman!
Loved Barney Miller and Hill Street Blues Hey, my brother worked at prudhoe bay alaska He always said if something went wrong up there we’d probably see it on the news.
Yunz know, I'm more Apt to believe today, that there can be " Phone police ", then back then. So, in A Way, Johnny Fever is right to be worried. Hmmmmmmm ? How's about that Les nessman ?! And watch out for those Flying Turkeys too. LoL 😂🤣😁
I saw this on Quora: 'I worked at a 50Kw AM radio station a long time ago. The chief engineer and I were about 12 feet from the antenna. He told me not to get any closer to the antenna I pointed at it saying “that ANTENNA???” ' Google says the broadcast antenna focuses the signal/radiation out to the horizon so maybe you wouldn’t be exposed to much standing under it. Don’t know how much, it only says that the 50,000 watts is the maximum produced. My town had the radio station out in a field with two tower antenna on either side. Then they moved the station offices downtown and put the transmitter/antenna up high on a hill for better coverage.
A funny episode, but would have been better if instead of the horse race stuff, Johnny and Venus spent the day at the transmitter getting high as a kite on some super premium Mary Jane. That way, Johnny's paranoia would have been much funnier. hahahahaha
@@DaveNarn I doubt that the TV censors would have allowed pot smoking to be shown. Tho they could have shown a smoke-filled room, perhaps. A Cheech and Chong film is about the only place where pot smoking made it to the big screen, but never on television.
Now people are smoking it while walking down the street and in cars. Nobody cares anymore. My neighbor uses a spare bedroom to grow the stuff using programmed LED lights.

Ma Bell's got the Ill Communication.
Howard played the Fever part so well! Hysterical!
I love Johnny and the "phone cops" almost as much as the Turkey Drop. It was stuff like that made the series great.
I forgot how funny this show is. I loved it. Especially when the Doctor became King of the disco
"Slow pay, gives good egg roll".
A classic line!!
Venus was awesome as the voice of reason. The one bright light in the darkness.

75 years AFTER the eternally-on-life-support corporation that owns the rights "dies". So right now it looks like never.
Loved this episode. They played up the stress of having the bomb at the transmitter pretty well.
In 2023, the phone cops are known as Google, Facebook, and Twitter!
And TikTok
@@dianekerr8311 Especially TikTok!
They're all IN ON IT, man!
He had me at phone cops😅

@@untexan Exactly - and Johnny just busted one of those phones.
@@untexan stop complaining. Now you have predatory cell phone companies.

I agree, this one is one of my favorite episodes too!
Yes, more music and Les Nessman! lol
This and turkey drop are my favorite episodes, but 😊this was one of the greatest shows on tv.
"The Consultant" has to be included as one of the best. And Hirsch is a hidden gem.
YA Nothing like sitting back with your friend ZIG ZAG & Columbian🥴And a cold Black Label 🍺
What blows my mind is that we have that same model toolbox from 1978! 😱
Chicago Tool and Die company model from the early 20th century....AKA Craftsman from Sears.
😂😂😂 this episode is timeless. Thanks for sharing 👍
Everyone remembers the turkey episode, but this one is my favorite. The phone cops! The phone cops!
This show and the turkey drop were always my favorites.👍😅
One of the best episodes on television
I guess that I'll include that in the update
I still miss the original Johnny Fever.
I miss all of them , they worked so well together, with scripts!!!
WKRP>>>Just gold.
I was in the business from 1978 to 1987 and this show was dead on authentic.
I would love to hear the stories....
It's the phone cops!!!!
I am so mad that I never got to watch this originally on air. Working on an oil rig in the middle of nowhere. Missed this AND Barney Miller😢🤯😡 .!!!
Loved Barney Miller and Hill Street Blues

Best episode
There are real phone cops, do do do do do

It was the phone KGB agents man!
Love the WKRP fan edits.
Stupid question some stations move away from their transmitter, how much radiation does the transmitter put out

Good point, makes me wonder if that other stuff was in the script but just never got filmed.
