Growing up in the mid 70's, was nothing like watching channel 50 WKBD Detroit. This show has never got old. They don't really make shows like this anymore.

I also watched WKBD Channel 50 in Detroit growing up!!! I was 13 yrs old in 1970, n I totally remember also Channel 56, which was PBS, one of my favorites, n Channel 62, which had old movies in black n white that my Mom n I watched together late at night!!! It was the only three channels that were on UHS n you needed a special antenna box to dial it in!! Once in a while, very early in the morning like 1 n 3 am, you could turn the round dial on the UHS antenna to 38 n get something from Chicago, mostly REALLY great old movies as well, n it was the only way to get movies that late at night cuz regular VHS channels were network Channels 2(CBS), 4(NBC) n 7(ABC) n they went off the air after Johnny Carson was over at 12:30 a.m. There also was Channel 9 from Canada which had wrestling n Hockey Night in Canada my Dad used to watch!!! It's unbelievable that I can remember all THAT but can't remember where I put my glasses or phone or keys. It's true about the long term memory being more accessible than the short term memory. Thanks for reminiscing with me!!!!

Anyone who works in broadcasting has worked in stations where there WAS a Herb Tarlek or a Les Nessman. While characatures, these personalities really do exist. It's those relatable characters that made this series so timeless and so enjoyable. Here it is, 40 years or so later, and it still holds up. That's good casting and good writing.

    • @cedarshoals529

The characters were based on real life station personnel, mostly from WQXI in Atlanta. Yes they are characatures to a degree but there were antics aplenty from the likes of Skinny Bobby Harper (Dr Johnny Fever) Gerald Blum (Art Carlson) and others. Im sure you know that the famous turkey drop episode was based on a real life promotion held in the 60s at WQXI, although greatly exaggerated. In fact, the antics at WQXI inspired me to pursue broadcasting in my younger days...great fun!

    WKRP was a Masterpiece.
So simple ,so relative and down to earth.
Yet it captured hearts and minds all over.
Isn't it Great how such a simple sitcom attracts so many viewers ?
The Writters of Sitcoms like WKRP are so smart.
But the Cast was responsible in those like WKRP, for turning them to pure gold.
We need Sitcoms like this today.
Most of those I see aren't that good.
I think back at some of the best and how big of a Fan-base they attracted.
    WKRP,The Jeffersons,All in the family,Gilligan's Island, Hill Street Blues,Emergency, MASH, Mama's House,exc.,.
All with these things in common..
All were written based on the real lives of folks.
All simple down to earth creative writing.
    All with Great Cast Members..
Somewhere down the line, writers forgot how to relate to real lives.
Most just do not capture the hearts and minds of viewers in a way that viewers can relate.
    A Good Wriiter knows..
    If you can do this..
    You will be successful...

My mother had five children, the last of which at the age of 39. And she also lost one between the 2nd and 3rd, so she wasn't afraid of trying again. She's never got tired of being a mom, and really enjoys all her grand, and great-grandchildren. In comparison, Mrs Carlson comes off as the Grim Reaper recommending abortion.

The Mom had 7 of us kids, I'm the youngest she had me at 37. She is now an amazingly strong woman of 94 now. I love everything about her & I'm proud to call her The Mom. She is & I dread the day that I know will come, I just pray for her be in good health without pain til that day.

Worked for a radio station and the boss watched WKRP. (me too) He decided to build a new building that had a hidden door. It opened to an out of sight Kawasaki 125. Sure, he could sneak out, but when he started the bike it was so loud everybody knew.
We didn't care, but he was happy about it.

I heard Shout Factory is releasing WKRP: The Complete Series (hopefully with the original music) in September for whopping $130. The price sounds high, but lets hope they include all the original music, as the First Season (currently the only season on DVD at present) has its music changed.

    • @thomash.schwed3662
      @thomash.schwed3662 4 месяца назад

They were able to get only eighty-five per cent of the original music. However, that’s still much better than some of the other releases over the years and definitely a lot better than the syndication package.

I think they might have changed the song. Venus is holding a Gigi album. I think the song was "Thank Heavens for Little Girls" that's why the Carlson's look at the office speaker so oddly before they dance.

Memory is a strange thing, isn't it?
I wonder why the change. It can't be the copyright issue that plagued later releases because "We've Only Just Begun" is not the generic crap that they substituted later.
