when they teased Joker, everyone instantly bought the first dlc pass and it did not matter what came afterwards. When they announced this, everybody be like: "Who the fck cares about Arms, idc about Arms so i wont buy it i guess". For what / who is this dlc. Promotion? In which way? Bringing Arms players to play Smash? Why would they if they have their own fighting-game? It just makes no sense whatsoever.

To be fair, they are old costumes. I don't think it makes much sense for new costumes to also be fighters but old costumes are fair game. I do however think the spirits argument holds up though for a pretty simple reason. Whenever a new DLC is created, the create a new Spirit board where you only fight the DLC spirits, so it's seemingly always somebody not represented by Spirits. Notice how on release, there were no Persona, Banjo, Dragon Quest, Three Houses, or King of Fighter spirits in World of Light until they got released. This means characters like say... Captain Toad might not make it in, but Master Chief and Dante are fair game. If Arms 2 does come out and the spirits we fight are new characters, this will all but confirm that theory.

@@lionkingmerlin Nah, unlike the Koopalings, the ARMS characters actually have their own unique skillsets. No way that one could be a costume for another, other than Springtron for Springman.
@@vision4860 Yeah each character has there own ability, for example, Ribbon Girl can jump up to 4 or 5 times, Master Mommy heals HP when guarding/blocking, Twintelle can slow down time, etc 👀 They'd all be echo fighters with slight differences. No way it would just be Ribbon Girl or Spring Man after they showed the entire roster like that. Well, actually lol it is Nintendo though... 🙄

Exactly. When the roster for SSBU was decided, Arms itself was probably still in a very early development stage. Just like Rex from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 didn't make it due to that same reason.

I *kind of* agree with him, I just think he might've said it in not quite the right way. (Or he meant what he said idk.)
I think ARMS is fun. It just... gets old *REALLY* fast. The matches are a lot of the same. Punch, curve, jump, punch, curve, block a bit, grab a bit, "oh boy let's flail at high speeds to do a super that looks the same no matter who we play!"
And there isn't much else to do. Fight computers, fight online, fight offline. They tried with like... volleyball? But it's meh. Game has a solid concept, but not enough depth or variety.

Well in some cases it lacks. For me the controls were really inaccurate and unresponsive which led to me having a quite high losing streak. Also, like alpharad said, the replayability just isn't there. Although the characters are nice.

Yeah its strange that so many people underestimate the depth in it. Its so fun and has a ton of replayability with a huge amount of match ups due to glove combos. Plus everyone moves differently. Its actually an underrated masterpiece and just as fun as smash
My money is on Max Brass just cause he has some “plot” significance in the ARMS “story” and has been featured on title screen art as of late.

Sakurai said that Fighters Pass 2 was completely decided when they filmed the Byleth video. That was NOVEMBER! Well before the pandemic! I'm pretty sure COVID-19 is not limiting the 3rd party characters. Because, again, all the negotiations would have already happened. Asking for permission and approving general movesets doesn't sound like something you do after you've officially stated in a video that all 6 characters were already decided.
Glad I'm not the only one who remembered this.
You are forgetting development though. Granted, i don't know what the dev studio looks like inside (and I'm assuming you don't either), but if its too small or there are too many people, you can bet that they will be delayed. I'm talking about the whole pass in general btw.
You also have to keep in mind that these third party companies supervise the characters. Nintendo was collaborating with Rare on Banjo's design. This could postpone characters entirely.

I imagine there are some, if not most of the important elements of their visual design, stage, music selection, moveset, and spirits that have to be approved up-front, before they get the full OK on the character. And once they do, all they would have to do is prove they're following those criteria. Although supervision mid-development might be somewhat affected by coronavirus, it's not like it would be impossible to do over email or skype

Regardless, the development of Fighter 6 would probably have already been on the timeline before Byleth dropped in January. And since the coronavirus pandemic was so early at that time, I can't really see any reason they wouldn't have started with a 3rd party if that was in the plans. But it apparently wasn't.
I'm just against the notion that Arms was their emergency backup character because of the virus, and that's why Fighter 6 isn't Dante or Crash.
Personally if I could pick 3 to be in, I would want Spring Man, Twintelle, and Min Min. Plus Twintelle vs Bayonetta would be very interesting. If you know then you know

I honestly think that they will announce that "surprise" we are adding in all the characters. Something like there is one character that is just called "Arms" and has the skins of all the fighters and they might even add in a new feature where different skins have like 1 or 2 moves different. Thats my opinion cause Smash has been adding in lots of new things that set these DLC characters apart from the rest mainly with things like arsene and hero's spells.

I believe Fire Emblem Fates was out in Japan before Corrin was announced for Smash. Don't quote me on that, though.
Hero's default skin was also from the new DragonQuest which hadn't released at the time Hero was announced.

Here’s what I think will happen: If springman gets in, they might replace the assist trophy with springtron. If ribbon girl gets in, I don’t really see any problem. The character I personally want is Min Min, but I’m still not sure if it will happen. If they include an arms dlc character, it would definitely be max brass. They may even pull a bowser junior on us and let us play as 8 different characters. I guess only time will tell.

Ribbon Girl would be great because she's a Spirit. Now Shantae, Geno, Resident Evil, Daemon X Machina, Xenoblade 2, Xenoblade X, Astral Chain, any single spirit is now back in the game.

The character wasnt in the base game because of the same reason as Rex. The game was too far in development
If they could put Rex and Pyra in the game alongside the announcement of their new IP or Xenoblade X2 that would be great

3:29 They announced during the Nintendo direct January 16, 2020 that all fighters in fighter pass 2 was already decided. So the reasoning of the pandemic affecting the fighter choice is false.
That being said, I'm open to the idea of using the pass to either promote new Nintendo games, or continued support for third party. Right now most of the series in Smash are well represented and I feel this could help bring life back to some forgotten games or help boost games that might go over looked.

Alpharad, you gotta remember that they wanted to put an ARMS character into the game right at the start, but they couldn't due to the same reason as why Rex from xenoblade isn't in, that being that the games were released to far into ultimates development to include them. They also decided on all the vol. 1 fighter pass characters at the same time as when they released the game.
However, the 2nd fighter pass wasn't planned at the start, and thus, the most likely reason an arms character is in fighter pass 2 is simply because they couldn't put one in the base game or fighter pass 1
while it's very likely the 2nd fighter pass wasn't planned at the start, I don't know if it was confirmed.

Aww, I actually really enjoyed arms... when it was one of only three games on the switch. Haven't touched it since, but it was fun!
An ARMS character wasn't in the base roster because ARMS was revealed too late, the same reason why Rex and Pyra aren't in the base roster. Sakurai began working on Smash Ultimate right after Bayonetta was released for Smash 4, and couldn't just add in Rex and an ARMS character, which is why they were only added as Assist Trophies and Mii costumes.

Well, to be fair, i do think characters with tether recoveries shoudn't be put into free fall after using up-b. Like with Byleth, any special will not put you into free fall. Apply that to chars that need up-b to side-b recoveries like the Star Fox chars, Ike, etc or to tether chars like Belmons, Links, Samus, etc.
Imagine not having a good range and tether.

"Adding first party characters just makes sense now" but aren't all the DLC fighters already established? They don't need to get rights to anything anymore and even if adding third party characters to the game becomes an issues, it's too late to turn back, the fighters have been chosen.

@James Mercier I mean he has the highest chance of getting it in if sakurai didn’t lie about spirits not being fighters... also he has a lot of the plot and story going for him and is probably the most well known out of the dlcs in arms. Yea I’m almost 90% sure it’s him because in my opinion helix just isn’t it and kid cobra mechanica the other dlcs (except maybe dr.coyle) and (hopefully) master mummy DEFINITELY arent it.(pls don’t add a character with a healing shield)
People need to stop contemplating the "why" with DLC picks. Fans have come up with so many "rules" and "guidelines" to try and understand picks but there is nothing universal. Sakauri said in the Terry direct that what's important to him is that a character is fun to play, not necessarily hugely recognizable.

Yes, the fans just need to understand it's all up to what Sakurai feels. He doesn't even follow his own restrictions from previous games.

I've reasoned logically that the most likely characters are Ribbon Girl, Min Min, and Helix. Based on Moveset potential, fun factor in playing and fighting, interest, and popularity.

All the larger characters probably wouldn't happen cuz it would mess with the hurt boxes
The hitbox differences, and the loss of character gimmicks ensures that this wouldn't happen. Smash's character designs are super detailed to the character, so having Ribbon Girl without quad jump, Mechanica's hover, Master Mummy's super armor, or especially Barq would be really a huge fail to those characters.

I mean, we just had a character take all the staple weapons of the 3 main characters in their game and fight with them in equal parts AND also ignore their own gimmick that would have been a logical counter/ witch time move.
The thing about an ARMs rep is that one way or another it's gonna have to be a thing they had to think outside of the box on so taking a handful of characters that are around the same size and fusing their gimmicks into something that could work for smash seems like just as good of an idea as any.

yeah I'm pretty much split between helix and min-min just because min min kind of already has a little more moveset potential for air attacks with her flip kicks, but helix just kind of allows for a lot of creativity in general and that may prove to be more valuable.
but ultimately I just don't know if a non-main-character can get into smash before a main character. often I think they sacrifice potential for great creative characters because they feel they need to put the main character in first to represent a new series that isn't already represented by a character.

The way i see it, the DLC characters generate so much hype for smash that Nintendo is using one of those precious DLC slots on a character nobody gives a shit about. It'd be like them adding byleth to the game, if Fire emblem three houses sucked and nobody liked it. At least that's how I view it.

Arms is one of those games that you have to understand the deeper mechanics of to have a lot of fun with, such as cancels, parries, combos, etc. The Arms Study Lab channel has some good videos about them.
About 3rd party being more difficult to develop because of what's going on, Sakurai said back in the Byleth presentation that all the characters had been decided already, and that was recorded last year
I'd guess that's why Arms got a character since Nintendo thought it was doing well back then. Poor guys
I don't think they just get to do the character free willy nilly though, they probably have meetings about the character every so often or after a certain point in development with the company that owns the rights, which maybe they can't do currently.
