  • Husband and wife team Martin Chard and Jenny David entered the den looking for £50,000 investment for a 30% equity stake in their specialised device that every builder/ handyman needs in their inventory. Martin Chard, who has Asperger's and Dyslexia, has been working for many years as a building maintenance engineer. The couple were looking for an investor that would take the existing product and run with it, this set off alarm bells for Nick Jenkins and the other Dragons.
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

She specializes in the building industry and home diy. She already owns tool companies and has connections in both the building and hardware retail industries so it would make sense that she could see the potential as it’s most advantageous to the person who already has the manufacturing base and experience in bringing new tools to the marketplace. Luck is being prepared when opportunity comes along. Deborah happens to be the lucky one in the room because she already has everything in place to quickly bring down the cost of manufacturing the product and has the pipeline setup to see that is gets distributed en masse to the public via Europe’s biggest hardware stores. I use these daily. I'm in the trade of carpentry for 15 years and this has been missing all my working life.
All the other tradesmen that have seen me use it have also started using them.
For non trade people I'm going to simplify the use of it- when i fit a gate post which is 100mm deep 4" a pencil can't physically get in the hole to mark for the bolt so we used to measure the holes which is often off a few milemetre. This tool/marker one handedly squirts the paint 100mm deep to the wall which is 100% accurate to where I hold it. I drill the marked hole and job done!
Simple but very very very effective and saves me time !

This thing is great and I can see why people would want to use it. Fitting boiler brackets to walls sometimes poses a similar problem. Even some designs of pipe clips would make sense for this tool.

Peter is right. You could spend 10 minutes battling with a tape measure and a sharpie to mark holes that are usually a few millimetres out due to unavoidable human error, but nonetheless has worked for electricians, builders, carpenters, DIYers and plumbers for years.
Or you could also make an investment into one of these, skip all the hassle, do it with pinpoint accuracy and not have to carry multiple sharpies around in case a nib inevitably breaks or one dries up.
I feel Peter acts purposefully obtuse to scare out other dragons from investing, so that he can swoop in and make an egregious offer as the entrepreneurs last chance at securing a deal. In this case, it didn't work, and so he tried to undercut the competition. THAT would be an intelligent thing to do, and explain him being so bleeding dense.
Either way, glad they chose Deborah. As an occasional DIYer that puts up fixtures, these things are brilliant. Rest a spirit level on whatever you're fixing to a wall, make sure it's level, use one of these and you're good to go in a mere minute or two.

@Tiger Tamer Most of these Dragons are not called Dragons for no reasons, they are shrewd business people and this is what business people do, outwit each other. Peter played his hand but unfortunately loses out, it happens all the time in business world. Deborah was the first one to offer because genuinely I think she only portrays herself as some grumpy Dragon but deep down if the participants are humble people and if they pitch something great, Deborah usually likes them and will be more willing to invest in them. Look at some of other participants who comes in as some arrogant smartass... Deb will tear into them seconds into their pitch.

I love when Peter is absolutely not impressed by their sales, but Martin (the inventor) is super happy with it for a really logical reason, something that other entrepeneurs won't even think. People aren't going shopping to buy something that is not being advertized, if you're getting sales anyway, you're going great, although you still need that extra push, and that's precisely what they're asking. Brilliant.

@@ragemutt5372 Its his strategy to make other Dragons think less of this product then he can swoop in at the end for the kill, but unfortunately Deborah who happens to own some DIY/tools business made an offer first. This piques other Dragons interest as they believe Deborah might have found a gem, so they all swoop in as well, leaving Peter aghast. Thats why he undercut all other Dragons with 25% equity instead.

  • @vysearcadia522

I love how Peter goes about how well a product will work. He will attack the product straight, find out their responses, and all the while, he will try to get other Dragons to get uninterested. And if they are interested, he'll undercut. This time, it didn't work as his rival Deborah took the gold! XD

Well done. I feel so happy for the couple. Brought a tear to my eye to see them getting offers without being talked down to after the initial sparing from Peter. Very proud of you both for trying so hard on your product. Well done for the dragons for giving this product and couple a go when they clearly are entitled to their choices of investments.
Reading the recent report update on the product brings joy to me to see it has expanded significantly from the initial stages.
