Hufanga being lost wasn’t just a simple “next guy up” matter. Still contending with lots of knock-on issues due to his absence. They obviously aren’t able to deliver four full quarters of quality D. But showing a real ability to make substantive halftime adjustments is more than just impressive. It imbues a mindset of being unkillable.

this is a great analysis man. as a niner fan this breakdown honestly makes me feel better b/c I think a lot of these mistakes are fixable, and while mahomes is scary I can't imagine the creative offensive schemes that broke us apart in the 1st half being done with only pacheco and the chiefs' OL. a pursuit issue is def best case scenario; shows that the raw talent/strength/athleticism as well as the defensive playcalling is there and can be brought out after 2 weeks of film breakdown
Great breakdown. It makes you appreciate Ben Johnson's (OC for Detroit) play designs/calls. The SF defense had no idea how to combat the Lions in the first half. They had better get their S together, because Andy Reid and KC will bring just as much if not more inventive play calling to the table in the SB.
Man, 3rd down defense in the first half was rough to watch. Watching that run play get a 1st down on 3rd and 12 was just completely demoralizing. Glad they were able to reset at half time. Even then, needed some help from the Lions to make the comeback happen.
I've been looking for this level of breakdown of the NIners poor defense in the first half. Yours is the best I've found. Great job, and thanks! I will forward this to the folks I was watching the game with. We were all in 'WTF?!?' mode watching all the easy long 3rd down conversions.
The Niners defense takes awhile to warm up. As the game goes on they start picking up speed. The Packers also started hot, but by the 4th they were completely worn out and spent.
Nick Bosa rarely speaks up at halftime but he did this time and told his teammates “Do your job!” That echoes what this video is saying, that is was more an effort and following your role issue for the Niners than Wilks calling the right scheme.
I always feel better about the Niners growth after I watch a video host dissect them knowing their coaches are doing the same thing. Thanks for a great video!
They need to play man coverage and that’s on Wilks Whenever they’re playing zone offenses march down the field. They need to play man since they’re so aggressive. They wear offense down
So true. Thank you! Also, his ''bend don't break'' is pure baloney. Burrow ( and Jackson) was in seventh heaven with the near non existent pressure, hits sacks and ZONE! Wilkes is my only concern with winning the SB. Homes will kill it if Wilkes does the bend don't break + zone, just like lamar and joe b. Plus, homes gets very rattled under pressure, hits sacks. If he had to put up with what Purdy puts up with, excessive pressure, hits, homes would be 'dead in the water'.
Thanks for the breakdown! Hopefully Wilks is confident in man with the Chiefs. Lions have better speed outside. Niners don’t need to be in zone they will just get eaten alive by Mahomes
Very good analysis. Defense is a very complex aspect of the Game. Sometimes I think that given the talent pool SF has, man on man should be their 'default MO'.
Kyle what I dont understand is these run plays are very similar to the way the Niners run the ball, we look like this is the 1st time we have seen this. Is this just a case of being too aggressive at the player level rather than just doing your job?
The biggest difference between regular season defense and playoff defense is the DL. Unless they can consistently pressure the QB early, the secondary cannot hold the receivers that long. They are not built for speed. If Chase, Nick can break the OL in 2 sec., the secondary can survive.

They suffer a bit under Wilkes, but as the video pointed out it's not all on him. KC lacks that deep threat - speed guy to put (or keep) SF in a deep zone or shell. (But I think we'll see SF play that coverage early to try to keep things in front of the D and to try to keep KC from getting an early lead) If SF D is smart, I think... they should play the run first, then I think they can keep Pacheco moderately contained. If they play a 5-man front on early downs and play more bump-and-run man against the chiefs, they can virtually stop this chiefs' offense. (although PM15 will still make some great plays) T. Kelce and R. Rice are the only two KC ball-catchers that can win against man. SF can (and will) double at least one of them on almost every play (mostly Kelce). Hardman and MVS can threaten the Def deep with speed occasionally, but that's not enough, they're not scaring any Def - consistently. In replay, yea it appears it isn’t on Wilkes. Thing is, our scheme is so vanilla, the offensive coordinator gets to take the initiative in the play call. Not mixing it up more takes off the pressure, allows the offense to stay in rhythm
1:56 I heard a lot of talk about the Niners in games this season getting beat on the edge with the run game. On the main plays where they did the most damage, 9er defenders were over-shooting/overplaying the chance for runs on the edge.
Niners need to receive the ball first so we can hopefully score and play with the lead. Teams are getting the ball first and scoring and making us play from behind.
I feel like your thesis here is "You can't blame Wilks", but in at least two cases you identified playcalls on third and long that played into Goff's strengths, so I'd argue that at best you can say "You can't blame Wilks for everything"
Dave Lombardi pointed out that Goffs QB rating is only 84 under pressure and he missed most of his passes when pressured in this game. I do not understand why the 9er DC Steve Wilks continues with this losving scheme game after game. Especially after success after the bye against JAX with 5-man line. The zone coverage looks like lawn statutes while receivers and tight ends glide through wide open. 9ers run defense is ranked about 25 this season - terrible. THEY DON'T HAVE TO BE!! Wake up Wilks!!!
Agreed. Homes is not good under pressure/sacks either. He gets rattled easily, while Purdy is cool. It is going to be brutal for Purdy vs KC D because their DC does plenty of blitzes. I said in the preseason and I'll say it again.. we are lined up horribly. there is too much space with our d line. there is almost two gaps uncovered before the snap. even if we play a gap scheme, the lineman by alignment should be able to two gap. simply put, we are lined up so far outside all the line men, the offense doesn't need to create a whole, we did it for them, they just need to maintain the whole. we can't effectively hunt and we are working outside in, and we need to work inside out. we simply start out of position.
I think because the niners normally rush four who are heavily relied on to primarily rush the qb. The two outside dlinemen are far oitside because they dont need to go around the left and rigth tackles which takes longer time to get to the qb and at the same time, contain the qb or rb inside the pocket. Then it's up to linebackers to fill the gaps. As you can see, the linebackers didn't do their job. It's not that they couldn't do it. Lions did a lot of motions that threw them off, something the Niners' offense does with success.
''We can't come out weak against the Chiefs'' agreed with this comments and will add benching Chase Young , 9ers defense should be at their best (ultimate and final game) plus Purdy if he can runs more; 9ers has a lot of chance to win !
I think hufunga being out it big but I think brown has played pretty well. I just wonder how you fix this these run fit issues as a defense in 2 weeks. There's some pass pro issues on offense as well. I don't understand not giving max effort in the nfc title game. Did they just think they're that much better than Detroit? Used to get home with 4 but feels like bosa is up there by himself at times.
Everything tight up once they play man-to-man. It was the zone that is the problem...too much space and cushion giving to the offense. Before the RB get the ball, he already have 5 yard big hole cushion ahead of him, that's unacceptable. That's what happened when you only do 4 man rush every time. There's got to be more man at the front. Sometimes, 49ers are using extra man guarding nobody on the field and also clueless...it's a waste. Also, if you do man-to-man, they wouldn't be able to do those quick side passes. You're giving the receiver a huge cushion...of course they can do those quick passes.
On god I like almost cried cause of how bad we couldn’t stop the run and the pass we literally just sat there and did nothing when it was just a simple fix and wilks needs a check on he’s brain
No one is talking about Bosa not hustling. I saw a lot of plays where if he didn’t get the initial push he gave up. I think Chase started thinking it was ok after watching Bosa do it so often. Bosa actually has been doing this since he came into the nfl but no one has ever said anything because he’s Nick Bosa. If you don’t believe me. Watch tape. Bosa gives up on plays a lot.
If the whole unit comes out flat and timid, it's absolutely on the coach. With that said, Warnwr has to come out and be disruptive, from the start. He can't wait to get mad, and then try and create havoc. He HAS to match Greenlaw's intensity. The db's have to swarm after the first tackle is initiated. Kelce can't have open space to choose where the play ends. Our guys have to make him feel EVERY, single hit!
On your first play, 48 missed the gap not Fred. 48 got fooled that the run was one way but it was the other way and he picked the wrong gap. Immediately after the play, Fred yells at him for missing his assignment.
On that end-around, why is Bosa crashing and pursuing so far down the line of scrimmage to his right? He puts himself out of position. Why not go straight up the field into the backfield and hold that edge? I see this constantly, defensive linemen, especially the edge rushers, pursuing so hard that they are very vulnerable to misdirection or reversals. That's why traps are so effective. I don't know football at this level and have never played at any level, but it just seems like the 49ers gaps are too wide for effective run defense. And, I don't see then running too many games on the pass rush. Why not stress the O line a little bit by forcing them to make decisions on who to block instead of always coming from the same spot and rushing straight up the field? Unless you're the Steel Curtain or the Purple Gang, you aren't going to have consistent pressure by having four linemen rushing the QB in their lanes all the time. You have to cause some confusion or bring extra players from time to time to make the O line think. Am I crazy?
I was screaming for them to blitz all first half. So simple vs QBs like Goff. He can’t move and throw. Every time he was pressured he threw a bad ball.
Hi Kyle, you seem to think rushing 4 and playing zone behind it is a bad strategy? They have had tons of success over the past 5 years playing this way. Do you see a difference in the zone depth or aggression to trigger to the shorter and medium routes and ball carriers?
Chase Young not paid big buck$ and knows he's not staying with 49ers next year so why playing with heart and hard and get injured let's walk during super bowl it's safer !
I hope Bosa and co. don't think they can contain Mahomes as they did with Hurts and come away with the win. Mahomes will find ways to make the first down if not rushed. They should instead take the risk and blitz. Mahomes been making mistakes and getting picked off when rushed.
IMO Young makes a lot of airheaded mistakes. It seems like he just wants sacks. Just unaware of where blocks may come from. Over pursuit and a lack of lane discipline happens often. His rush lacks creativity. Mostly high and muscle action. Talented but easy to scout a scheme against.
49ers need to stop playing the wide 9 defensive schemes but instead install a 5 man front. Watch the Raiders and Ravens game plan against the Chiefs and they will improve
The game plan for the Chiefs is simple. Run the ball. Make the 49rs prove they can stop the run.....then play action with Mahomes. On defense, the Chiefs need to put eight men in the box, and make Purdy prove that he can beat them over the top. If the 49rs cannot run the ball and control the clock, they have no chance......if there are no turnovers, and its a stalemate at the line of of scrimmage, and it comes down to Purdy vs Mahomes.........then its KC all the way.
The Chiefs start fast most games. They get that lead and then the defense can play man to man on the outside and rush the passer. The 49ers better come out fast on D or the Chiefs will bury them early.
Did u see Chase Young and Givens jogging half ass pathetic effort to tackle Gibbs on that reverse touchdown?! Omg watch the tape! Chase and Givens gotta go after this season!
Ive thought all year long the D has been way overrated. Its a defense in name only. All that "talent" . Want a first down? Run it up the middle. Need a completion? Throw it at #20- Hes absolutelty terrible but we keep putting him on the field. I think a small wind would knock Chase Young over thats how terrible his effort is and we were better without him. Hes a liability. Warner is a beast but his aggressiveness causes him to overplay a lot ! I can keep going but thats enough for now. These are just my opinions of course! LOL
Huf was playing okay before his injury but the run defense had been sus since the beginning of the season with missed tackles. We lost depth pieces off season that were good at run defense. I just didn’t realize the drop off was going to be so steep.
@@minuete82 The Lions looked unstoppable, we could not seal the edges, Bosa and Bryant were feeling the pressure of a drop-off in sacks, and they exploited it. We have always struggled with mobile QB's, (mind, who doesn't), I hope we can learn from this, as Kansas won't let a 17-point lead slip.
@@garylake1676 this is the first time where I don’t trust our defense. This is our identity. And now with the same ref as the last SB, I expect Bosa to get held 90% of the game.
@@minuete82 Agreed, I would feel a lot more confident if DeMeco Ryans was still in charge of the defence, I think that Kansas, and in particular that Mahomes-Kelce outlet option, is going to be too much for Steve Wilks, he just has not got that same handle on his group, and you see that when it takes until half time for the adjustments to be made, they should be being made when the defence is on the sidelines, not in the locker room.
@@garylake1676 at the same time, kudos to him being able to adjust. Wilks was hired to prevent explosive plays which DeMeco and Saleh had issues with (again due to personnel). Instead we get gashed with the runs and playing soft coverage. He will need to get creative on the back end to give the D line a chance to sack.
I would love to see a return of the "Big DE" like when Armstead was there. Not to mention it might help the run defense considering there will be more size and strength to hold the edge better. I'd also like say with a switch to a Big DE would help roster continuity and ease the salary cap with essentially 3 DT's on the field on base downs it will require 3/4 defense personnel playing a wide 9 front.
Or should have got Suh or Jordan Willis on base downs and put armstead on the outside at times .. someone made great point instead of going big for Hargrave should have got depth

At least for some plays. And maybe have Young or Gregory play third linebacker spot for base defense
Nice analysis 💯
Why does Warner jump to the left on that second play? Makes no sense. Nothing looked as if it was going that way.
I called it ‘the ole defense’. Like the bullfighter with the cape just letting the bull go by .
Good breakdown..
Am I crazy?
Instead of going big with Hargrave they probably should've added quality depth throughout the defense. This is on Lynch
Yep!
Umm. Ok armchair gm
@@michaeltamares7974😂😂😂😂 general couch 🛋️ managers 😂😂😂😂
That Williams play is our own LOL. That’s the Deebo sweep
We have to get rid of the WIDE 9 defensive it’s so easily blocked.
And people are angry about Steve Wilks getting fired....really?!
Where can I see this tape? I have DAZN but it only allows me to see the broadcast:(
I was worried if Warner didn’t show up to play this game 1st half he looked bad
Chase Young not paid big buck$ and knows he's not staying with 49ers next year so why playing with heart and hard and get injured let's walk during super bowl it's safer !
I’m seeing good players being. Uncoordinated. Then who do you think is getting beat?
Both the Lions and Packers were playing at a higher energy level. Teams with nothing to lose.
I hope Bosa and co. don't think they can contain Mahomes as they did with Hurts and come away with the win. Mahomes will find ways to make the first down if not rushed. They should instead take the risk and blitz. Mahomes been making mistakes and getting picked off when rushed.
Now I know why Doug is on Fox/MSM. He’s got nothing to say…….Throwing shade at Brock, still.
Damn the Lions were good in the first half man. Imagine if they had stayed with that same game plan... the niners would have lost for sure.
Great post game analysis. KC gonna eat them alive with Pacheco and Mahomes.
No matter what the defensive scheme is, if gap integrity is continually compromised, it'll be a long day.
At 4:20 if Ambry runs towards the pylon, the RB cuts back inside and beats him one an one anyways
The first moves off the snaps can be misdirections. And they were in the first half. And the defense was baited.
The first half was just the niners messing with the lions so they can study the lions defense.. per source close to steve wilks..
Goff really is a statue back there.
Maybe Kyle will take a few of the lions plays into the SB that TD on the reverse was on fire, im sure KC will .
Its the same thing the packers did to the DEs with the WR cracking down 🤦🏽 they need to shrink the wide nine down
IMO
Young makes a lot of airheaded mistakes. It seems like he just wants sacks. Just unaware of where blocks may come from. Over pursuit and a lack of lane discipline happens often. His rush lacks creativity. Mostly high and muscle action. Talented but easy to scout a scheme against.
Kinlaw and J. Brown are balling. Brown should not be our leading tackler
Yes, that first-half defense was atrocious.
49ers need to stop playing the wide 9 defensive schemes but instead install a 5 man front. Watch the Raiders and Ravens game plan against the Chiefs and they will improve
Do the second half
That secondary suspect af.
Whoops Joe Smith I'm talking to
Reid must be licking his chops watching this bad tape. Hope we get our shit together. KC's defense is not one you make miraculous comebacks on.
Andy Reid & Mahomes gonna eat..Ouch
Chiefs havent blown out anyone except Dolphins...itll be a close game.
The Chiefs start fast most games. They get that lead and then the defense can play man to man on the outside and rush the passer. The 49ers better come out fast on D or the Chiefs will bury them early.
Hargrave was a waste of money. Didn’t realize how small he was
Aaron donald is smaller
You got to remember the lions had one of the best o lines and a phenomenal oc. Chief’s o line isn’t as good.
Did u see Chase Young and Givens jogging half ass pathetic effort to tackle Gibbs on that reverse touchdown?! Omg watch the tape! Chase and Givens gotta go after this season!
D was first last year….before hargrave, chase gregory etc.. of course wilkes is a big part of the problem!!!
Burks is a clear liability on D. The Niners miss Azeez
LOL
We are missing Huff, Fred Warner is much better when he has faith is his backstop.
Bro armsted is still there he played in both playoff games ,maybe you meant when Buckner was there,
Or should have got Suh or Jordan Willis on base downs and put armstead on the outside at times .. someone made great point instead of going big for Hargrave should have got depth
