    There was literally a company out there (apparently went under in the past year... they also made de-icing equipment) whose entire sales pitch was "give us a ton of money and we'll replace your lancair wings. The plane will be 15-20 kts slower but the stall characteristics won't be utterly unrecoverable".

    I dunno... I'm just a humble country engineer, and view error-handling and risk analysis and mitigation as a compulsory part of the design job. A design for human users which inflicts severe penalties on missteps is a not-so-great design in my view. Guess I'll have to stay over here, cowering next to slower, more training wheel-y models. :-)

    • @georgeo162
      @georgeo162 Год назад +5

      These stats are scary but I see those severe penalties as a trade off in the design process. While it can do amazing things, an 18yo driver shouldn’t be handed a Carrera GT. If someone isn’t willing to see and manage the risk, they should buy a 172.

    As mentioned, these are unforgiving airplanes; not only as it relates to pilot performance, but to component performance as well. A minor mechanical issue in a Cherokee or even an RV-8 may be less problematic than in a Lancair. This is important as even outstanding pilots are at greater risk in a Lancair than in an RV, and I know of at least one truly good pilot that was seriously injured when a mechanical issue caused a forced landing and he did everything right.

    104 fatal accidents per 100,000 hours??? Less than every 1000 hours of flight you have the risk of a fatality? That's a bit much. considering the average is 1 out of every 100,000 hours. Great video though!

    • @TheOwenMajor
      @TheOwenMajor Год назад

      That's not how statistics work. As described in the video, to a diligent pilot who trains and makes good decisions, the plane is very safe. This is just to say that the aircraft is more dangerous to the "average" pilot.

    • @Datsunz-fr2nw
      @Datsunz-fr2nw Год назад

      @@TheOwenMajor Albeit yes that is correct, but it still is 104 times more dangerous than a regular plane. Even if the odds are low and an experienced pilot can beat those odds.

    • @TheOwenMajor
      @TheOwenMajor Год назад

      @@Datsunz-fr2nw I don't mean to harp, but you're confusing odds vs. probability, but they aren't the same.
      What you are describing is odds, like the chance of rolling a certain number on a die.
      Plane crashes are measured in probability, and probability is modified by a wide range of things.
      It is not as simple as saying this plane is "104 times more dangerous than a regular plane". This aircraft is more difficult to fly, yes, but more difficult != more dangerous.
      Put a GA pilot in a jetliner and the crash rate will be horrendous. The reason commercial aviation is safer isn't because the aircraft are inherently less dangerous, it's because the pilots are rigorously trained and regulated.
