- This is one of my favorite films. I think it is very romantic and I especially love this scene... The interaction between Bill Parrish and Death is very nice. The way Bill speaks of his late wife, remembering how he first met her...
PS, Anyone else hate Drew knocking - I mean I want to hear more about how Bill met his wife for the first time! Like Death said, yes Drew you're interrupting. Go away!

The silence of the lamb sandwiches, Joe.
Nice one well done👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
john hogskins hahahahaha!! No fava beans, and a nice Chianti?!?
What are you gonna do ?
Hahahahahahahhhhhahahahahahahahahahahhaahhahahhahahahahhhha
you deserve an upvote, take my upvote.
Hopkins is absolutely brilliant in this scene. You can watch it entirely out of context and he still invokes in you the intense feeling of heartbreak and loss his character feels.
Shane Majszak absolutely agree he got me the first time I say it
I think this, and Hearts in Atlantis, are underrated performances by Hopkins. Fantastic actor, love his roles.
Shane Majszak what is brilliant is in the whole movie we never see a pic of his wife, so we as audience have no image of this lady so we can’t judge her based on her looks, make assessment of how attractive this couple is, judge her character based on a pic, all we have are her husbands description of their love and we can imagine a beautiful marriage and a beautiful woman. We never need to see her to understand she was a remarkable person.
so true!
Well said, Dear
What an actor, I immediately started tearing up when he was explaining his wife. Only a true artist is able to allow true emotion to flow like the great sir Anthony Hopkins
I'm with you, Alexns. To hear the subtle but heartbreaking crack in his voice as he begins talking about her little blue suit, and then him looking away as he's trying to hold it together. That's an all timer!
At first I belived it was the music, giving it that subtle edge, like so many others. Then after rewatching it 20 times I see his full performance. Thank you Anthony Hopkins.
Absolutely but I don’t think Brad gets enough credit for his acting though. Because of his looks people don’t fully realize how good of an actor he is in probably everything he’s done. Just look at this scene, here Brad truly comes across as someone eating that for the first time, and experiencing this world for the first time. Look at his “piercing eyes”. He looks as if he’s looking right through him and into his soul, or maybe as if he knew his wife and walked her to the other side and knew her soul. Those nuances are so awesome too me.
I totally agree
You have never lied......
0:40 That realisation the entity sitting in front of him took away his wife. The nuance in this film is outstanding.
Yeah death it comes for everyone
It's amazing how he found a body
Well, nature kills, death is the doorman.
Watched this movie many times and that was the first time I caught that.
Literally rewatch this scene and that's exactly what I thought
Every actor in this cast did an outstanding job. It’s an unforgettable movie.
The part when he asks if he is interrupting and Joe answers with the blunt yes, the look that he gets from Anthony Hopkins face is priceless
It's almost a 'Dad' look XD
"Am I interrupting?"
*YES!!!*
Brillant isn’t it
"Am I interrupting"
*deadly glare* ...yes.
Dude never came so close to dying right on the spot.
smh.... when he said "Joan...that's my wife.." and Joe acknowledges with a "..mhhmm"... He pretty much telling him yes I know your wife... I'm the one who took her. Powerful scene
OMG! All this time, I thought it was "Joe [Black], where's my wife...?" and he just anwered "Mhhmm"; like a silly answer to a silly question... need to watch it all again now... hehehe thanks!
But Joe had the decency to lower his head after getting a side eye from Bill.
I hate that Joe never tells him, he is going to see her again... but I guess he is death.
I caught that too, "mmhhmm."
How these gentlemen never won an Oscar for these rolls I'l never know...
And how this movie won nothin... CRIMINAL!!!
@TheRoswellCrash Really? I did not know that. I thought Pitt played the role perfectly.
TheRoswellCrash are you creating that rumor by yourself?
TheRoswellCrash you may have no agenda but the planet is addicted to spreading that type of idiotic negativity, be it real or not. I actually know for a fact that is completely false. They got along great both in here and Legends of The Fall a few years back. The only thing i believe happened was Anthony Hopkins stressing out a lot with the director, Martin Brest, for wanting to do multiple takes.
another proof why the oscar, or more precisely, the academy is a joke
"How these gentlemen never won an Oscar for these rolls I'l never know...
And how this movie won nothin.."
It's the movies that win nothing (but your imagination) that are the best!
Did 'Dark City' win any accolades? No! And the best film ever made.
How Anthony Hopkins or Brad Pitt didn’t win Academy awards for this movie is beyond me , whom ever votes is blind in Hollywood
This movie gets me everytime. Love how he describes his wife and the love he had for her
Hopkins hit this scene home. He talks briefly about his wife just like you would expect a man would that lost the love of his life.
That really gets me. Superb acting.
Really do love this movie. Portrays death as not an indiscriminate life taker. But something that truly understands the role, and seems to hate it. Loved this move
My mum passed away yesterday from her battle with cancer. I have no idea why, but I’ve come here to this video. And I can resonate with this much. I adored my mum so much and I’m so happy I had the chance to sit by her bedside and tell her I loved her. Everything will remind me of her.
That’s very decent. And a credit to the individuals who make these become more than mere movies to us all.
Sorry to hear that.
I'm so sorry for your loss. You will never forget her. Take care.
Stay strong man
The Gospel, which means the Good News is the news that God Almighty, the Creator came in the flesh as Jesus Christ to take away the sin of the world. The one God is a trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Son came and laid down his own life to save ours. His sacrifice on the cross paid the price for our redemption with his own blood. On the third day he rose from dead and offers the gift of salvation and forgiveness to those that repent and trust in him. Although God's creation was created perfect, having no death, sickness and disease, the creation became corrupted through Adam and Eve in them disobeying God. In this rebellion the creation became fallen through the curse of sin and mankind became separated from God. This world is fallen, but God offers reconciliation to him through his provision at the cross. Ultimately God will restore his creation to perfection when he returns but those that who reject his offer of redemption will remain condemned by their sins and go to hell.

Definition of loss and true love. How he describes and feels about his late beloved wife is actually how I feel about my mom and dad. I miss you both and I will see you again.
God's good rest to your mom and dad, Ace.
I lost my wife to cancer three years ago. Hopkins acting can make me cry, I find that true artistry.
I’m sorry
I wish she took you with her Hopkins sucks fat chode here
I haven't lost my wife, but this scene made me tear up because I can imagine how that might feel...
I’m so sorry.😔
Want to talk about "make you cry", I can't even make it through the trailer for the movie "Tuesday". It comes out June 7th, 2024.
Every time I see this, I get tears in my eyes....
Manuel Gerhardt Me too man me too
lost my wife 4 months ago. this is the one movie scene I constantly think about since then. everything reminds me of her, there's not a day that goes by that I don't think of her, those lines specifically. absolute beautiful performances by Hopkins and Pitt. also love when he asks, why didn't you stop me? I don't know.... the look and delivery from Pitt is perfect
Sorry for your lost. Rest assured you will see her again, in the next place. Cheers.
@@ghettoracer thank you my friend
these 2 were awesome together
It's the little things that make up all the difference. Just look at Bill Parrish's face, tone and body language and you know how much he loved and misses his late wife.
Anthony invokes a feeling that every women would only dream that they are remembered the way he feels about her in this scene .A painfull loss , but yet a love so deep so great to be remembered this way .Masterful scene.
Anthony Hopkins what a actor you could really feel the love and pain he had in losing his wife. Shows what love he had for her.
Really beautiful scene aside...I love when characters say "am I interrupting??" And someone says, for once, YES. YOU ARE. Very nice.
Such an important scene. A man with everything he could ever ask for. Ripped back down to threads like a lost child with the way he has his hands in his pockets to want the one thing money couldn’t possibly ever buy. Time.
Such a simple scene yet so alluring. Great scene in a very underrated movie. Hell this movie has a dozen scenes like this one. When Bill is talking about love to his Susan in the chopper, Allison telling Bill he is her favorite, Joe telling Bill a man like himself has nothing to fear, Joe's interaction with the sickly lady in the hospital... I can go on.
Yeah the way Bill Parrish ( _Anthony Hopkins_ ) talks about his late wife is so moving. Anyone who's been in *love* can relate to the nostalgia of someone you miss from this scene. :)
This is the best scene of the movie by far. An exquisite soundtrack and a simply amazing Anthony Hopkins make of this scene a real masterpiece.
It happens to me sometime when I'm watching a movie that I realize how I'm fully absorbed from a particular scene. This was exactly the case. Hopkins was able to catch me so deeply that in less than 2 minutes it wasn't just a movie anymore... then the scene is abruptly interrupted by the knocking on the door...
It's the perfect example of a scene which is so valuable to worth for the entire film.
This, Quince and Joe, and Bill and Allison, best scenes
The soundtrack is awesome
Thomas Newman has that effect on people
brilliant acting. his hands in his pockets. his back to the window. almost in tears. "everything reminds me of her. there isn't a day goes by when I don't think about her. Yes. I have known that kind of love. I am better because of it. It truly is a strike of lightning.
i'm looking forward to being better because it...I can tell you I'm not right now >
As have I. It's both wonderful & frightening and the loss of my beloved Lena has left me feeling beyond empty. I felt Bill's heartbreak at the loss of his wife to the core of my soul.
I don't care what anyone says, this film was brilliantly performed. I wish Martin Brest would come back and make films again.
...she had on a navy blue dress...with pink flowers...a jean jacket with cut off sleeves...and the bible in hand...she was the prettiest most radiant thing I had ever seen shining in the sun and I miss her so💔🙏🏾🌻
Anthony Hopkins plays this as perfect as you can play it. Brad Pitt is perfect as his sounding board, and yet his adversary as well since he took his wife away. What gets me is Hopkins plays it so matter of factly, and then when he begins to describe her, you hear a slight choking up as the tears come. Very subtle, but it's there of you listen. You never see the tears, and he never completely breaks down, but his strength holds it together, and then he wipes his eyes quickly as if he thinks, "I have to get back to the real world again."
Such a brilliant movie. Each scene so perfectly played. Hopkins and Pitt are just
A simple wonderful meal. Like a cold lamb sandwich.
"everything reminds me of her, there isnt a day that goes by that I don't think about her"
Mr hopkins here is beyond brilliant the greatest ever
'Cold lamb sandwiches'. His cadence and tone when he says that is one of my favourite things.
Yes! And when he listed the ingredients...
I tear up every time I think of the first moment I met the woman I want to spend my life with. I got my old job back to have spare money to pay for a car. It was at a fast food place, nothing special. I sat at the take out area and waited for some forms to sign. And I saw her in the expo window serving up the next order. She was wearing a purple shirt, and her purple work hat with purple lipstick. It’s her favorite color. Her hair was tied back in a short ponytail and had kakis on as well haha. Someone said something to her and she laughed, the kind of laugh that reaches your eyes. She was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. She never finishes anything she drinks and sunflowers are her favorites. Ill treasure that memory till I die, and after even
Married yet?
Very romantic and special
Cynthia Ahern Thank you. She is my world
@@barnowl763 blessings and happiness to you both!
Ungo Bungo not yet but it’s only a matter of time!
I don't think I would want to listen to anyone else talk about life than Anthony Hopkins either.
The story and the music together. Wow. They knew how to make movies back then.
Hopkins and Pitt together are fantastic...I liked them in legends of the fall
Maaaan Hopkins delivers so well on this scene
Leave it to a brilliant actor like Anthony Hopkins to make sandwiches heart breaking 💔 😢
I'm not a journalist, but one of my favourite questions is always, "How did you meet?" Because it's what defines us, the life that follows after. Boy meets girl is still my best story. And what are we, but stories?
We are so much more. Stories is what defines us is gonna create
Brad Pitt was literally Mr. Take Your Girl in this scene.
That subtle tick at 2:00 that screams a young boy who’s not going to cry in front of another boy but is about to
1:27....an immensely powerful man looks incredibly vulnerable and lonely. My god.
I love with what childlike curiosity Joe discovers his love for food.
Unbelievable scene. Perfect.
I appreciate the moment he realizes he is speaking to Death about his wife. As if the thought never crossed.
This is the best scene in the movie for me - this and when the old lady dies. Bill and the old lady were Death's teachers.
One of my favorite movies of all times
A cold lamb sandwich is a tradition here in Australia
I have to go to there
Though they aren't very popular where I am in the United States, lamb sandwiches are definitely one of my favorite options. I like duck as well, but probably not on a sandwich.
It certainly is. Lamb is a staple in Australia. I’m partial to a little mint jelly on my lamb sandwiches too :)
Pitt does an exceptional job here but Hopkins is another level
That little glance at the very end Brad gives Drew... says, "No! Not kidding at all.."
The DP in this film needs a Nobel Peace prize
I was born that time ... but this movie always amazes me ...
My husband said this part reminded him of me. Now we’re separated. Hurts to know that he may never feel this way about me again. Don’t take love for granted boys & girls because when you lose it, it hits hard.
Awww. Cherish the good bits of your relationship. That you always will have... Much love my stranger friend.
'Such great acting. One of my favorite movies!
This scene...when he describes meeting his wife...tears
Anthony hopkins is incredible in everything I have ever seen
This scene is what makes movies so magical. The expression of true deep love and loss that one had to have experienced to convey genuinely as a creator, a performer, an artist. I marvel at the brilliance in this scene and others. Movies are more than money. They are expanded windows into a million lifetimes that an individual could never experience in one's life.
From feeling great to crying in 10 seconds, only Hopkins could do that to me.
This is a great movie. Loved every part of it. What I’ve noticed upon watching it again is the magnificent artwork in every scene. I think the painting behind Joe is an early cubist painting by Picasso or Braque.
One of the many marvelous scenes in the movie that point out that death is human (perfect metaphor of a perfect movie). Death isn't bad or ruthless or vengeful or brutal or anything mainstream culture wants you to believe, because post-religious/Western societies always confuse the concepts "death" and "devil." As this movie shows us, Joe a.k.a. death has a duty to fulfil. And while he realizes how much potential he has to be a friend, a lover, a consultant, a family member ..., that job needs to be done and can not be escaped.
Quite possibly two of the greatest actors of our time.
At first I belived it was the music, giving it that subtle edge, like so many others. Then after rewatching it 20 times I see it, and it does not start before 1:50. Thank you Anthony Hopkins.
Top 5 of all time... what a piece
I know brad pitt is handsome, but never understood why women got crazy over him back in 90s. Maybe i was just a kid. I was in senior high school back then actually....well maybe he's not my type. But looking this movie again, and seeing him again.....God he's so handsome. I mean an absolute handsome. I must be blind in 90s era.
You were young and stupid... and blind as a bat!! I'm glad you've opened your eyes. Ha ha. :)
I had a huge crush Sir Anthony Hopkins. The huge age difference didn’t matter to me. There was something about him on screen that I liked. So much so that I decided to find myself a Welshman just like him. I found him-my Wild Welshman-he was the love of my life! He passed away in 2021. It’s a pain that will never truly go away and an emptiness that will never be truly filled. You just have to get on with it knowing he is my guardian angel looking after me. One day when my time comes we will see each other again.
Luck you found one! Nice story thanks for sharing.
YO BABISH WHERE YOU AT, WE NEED THIS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Death uses silverware like a Japanese person who has only used chopsticks.
good observation. :)
I know it’s a movie…and it’s a fiction representation of love, but man… I hope one day I can find someone who loves me that much. He finds mundane quirks (like enjoying lamb sandwiches) and loves me more for it… who remembers the details of an outfit because he was just that taken with me… stuff like that. It’s a beautifully written and acted scene.
I still remember the 1st day I me my ex-girl friend in 1995... I instantly knew I would fell in love with her. Without reason...
@@ghettoracer so it’s possible then :)
It takes a man with balls to accept a cold lamb sandwich from Anthony Hopkins
A very underrated movie!!!!!
Absolutely love the music
One word : superb.
Damn what a great actor, Anthony Hopkins of course !
Remembering the first time. The truest test of truest love. I will never forget the first time I met my truest and only love. I fell in love in that exact moment. I know the heart of this scene in that way. I get the feeling Mr. Hopkins does as well.
One of the best movies of all time
Bratt Pitt in that movie was so good looking that it felt eerie. There is an unnatural, almost supernatural quality in his perfect beauty. You do get a sense that something feels off about him, that he is indeed an agent of another world or domain.
Anthony Hopkins ⭐✨ That's a movie talent.
Hopkins is simply great
Memories fade. But moments don’t. Bill can talk about 1st meeting his wife bc he’s still there. He’ll always be there.
I have the scene on my favorite list. Such a great scene. I don't think they were even acting. Only reminiscing. We all have that one true love. Even of it didn't work out. We've all experienced it. ❤
One of the best movies ever made, this American Psycho, V for Vendetta, silence of the lambs
outstanding choices. :) they are all excellent.
Everything reminds me of her, 21 years later….
Joe has seen death every day since the beginning of time, and he has seen the sorrow that it brings, but he hasn't seen the beginning of it, or the beginning of love. This is something he has problably longed for since the beginning. He doesn't want to see just the end and death. He wants to see life
John 11:25-26 KJV

Didn’t see much mentions about Brad or Bill, but I do see a lot of Joe and Anthony Hopkins.
both were fantastic.
This scene makes me think of life. His personal discription is truly a believable loves passion, cause that's how I would be if it was me. And then his general angelic interests get sparked, makes me what to fall in Love. Maybe someday.
This is an amazing movie
Hahhhhhhhh.
We always look up when we feel the tears coming.
As if tilting our head and pretending to observe the distance will drain them back into the well they bubbled up from.
Drew the prick asks, "Am I interrupting?"
Joe Black answers with; "Yes."
It's very funny following such a deep moment.
God he's so beautiful!
“She knew stuff like that”. Yes, you’re crying.
Love the subtle ways Joe seems out of place. He's eating a sandwich pre-cut in half with a knife and fork.
When Joe “becomes” a little more human, he blinks more
"...that one Perfect Day, on Gordon Street"
what do you mean? is this part of the script or something?
Meeting Joe Black is one of my favorite movie as well. This respectful well mannered & romantic man that is portrait by Brad Pitt in this scene is someone I always aimed to be. I always liked being romantic. Without being a forceful creep like most pick up artist claims women like of course. Sadly, this gentlemen behavior is something people nowadays call cheesy & disregard as being cringe.
